Setting: Joanna's room
Isolde found, in the days and weeks following her talk with Evelyn, even while she was tending to Javi, that her wish to spend time with her two sisters did not diminish. In fact, with each passing day, her awareness of time slipping by only increased; each moment they were not together marked another step towards the moment when she would pass from her sisters' lives, never to hold them again. Before that happened, she vowed, she would have a day of the three of them, happy and free, as they had once been. It was with this intent that she knocked on Joanna's door, a smile on her face.
"Jo, I know that you and Reuben are probably busy and enjoying your time together alone, and I do not wish to intrude, but I was wondering ...well, really Evelyn and I were wondering...I'd actually rather tell you face to face so please let me come in." There was almost a lightness in her manner; how was she to know that the dam had been burst already, that the darkness that she'd tried so hard to hide had crept out to touch others?

"I can't believe they let her in here," Joanna's eyes were locked in on her eldest sister's, not giving the eldest of the Schellenberg's the satisfaction of knowing she was talking about her. But who better to vindicate her of these frustrated feelings than the kindest oldest sister to ever walk the earth? At least in Jo's eyes, that was true. "This is charity event and they let someone who just got out of prison for financial fraud in? How ironic... and so close to my wedding? It's like they only did it for the drama so people will tune in." Her eyes finally gave in and took a quick turn about the room until she'd found yet another eye sore in the sea of people. Oh god not Javier, she thought as her hand reached to her sister's shoulder, "I think we both might need a drink..."

LOL I love rec requests phrased like this. They delight me. It's like "good afternoon, *tips hat*, do you have recs were they fuck super nasty?"
I hope you're having a good Sunday too! Celebrating my ancestral heritage (on my mom's side at least, which is The Good Side) this St. Patrick's Day.
And yes, love a dirty talker:
--Salt in the Wound which leads into Salt Kiss by Sierra Simone. Sierra writes great dirty talkers in general, across the board. But Mark is probably my faaavorite especially because of the scene in SitW when he takes Isolde's virginity and tells her all about how she's going to be his good little wife, etc.
--Heartbreaker by Sarah MacLean. One of my favorite MacLean heroes! The good girlification of it all, the wry observations. I love it.
--The Duke Gets Even by Joanna Shupe. Joanna heroes in general are good dirty talkers. But I think that this book takes it over the top because there's an entire scene where she's like "I bet you don't even swear" and he's like "O. RLLY." and proceeds to talk her into a storm.
--Every single Mila Finelli hero (Mila is Joanna's mafia romance pen name) has FILTHY dirty talk.
--Eyes On Me by Sara Cate. Kinda necessitated by the fact that the hero begins his relationship with the heroine after discovering that she's a cam girl--she can hear him but can't see him. Also. She is his stepsister. WHOOPS.
--Throne of the Fallen by Kerri Maniscalco. Some FANTASY ROMANCE DIRTY TALK. Ugh, the massage scene in this book. Envy dirty talks to Camilla about all the things he's going to do to her and how she's basically gonna die for it while massaging her and fingering her. It's great.
--Kresley Cole heroes are also "generally good dirty talkers" but books like Lothaire, Pleasure of a Dark Prince, and The Master really hit it outta the park for me with the dirty talk
--The Friend Zone by Kristen Callihan has a delightful accidental phone sex scene in which the hero and heroine, ~platonic best friends~ unintentionally get each other off over the phone. It's GREAT.
--Grace Callaway writes uniformly strong dirty talking heroes. Would especially recommend Pippa and The Prince of Secrets and Charlotte and The Seductive Spymaster on this level.
--Act Your Age by Eve Dangerfield is real good on the "stepfather role play" dirty talk front. REAL REAL GOOD.
--Lady Isabella's Scandalous Marriage by Jennifer Ashley OOOOOH Mac Mackenzie is super dirty. But also so funny? He's always like "TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NAUGHTY SCHOOLGIRL DAYS" fully knowing that she didn't do anything naughty as a schoolgirl lol
--Sweetest Scoundrel by Elizabeth Hoyt has the MAGNIFICENT Asa Makepeace who just talks her through it the entire book. I also love the deranged dirty talk in Duke of Midnight--"TAKE MY COME FOR IT'S ALL I CAN GIVE YOU'.
--A Holly Jolly Ever After by Sierra Simone and Julie Murphy is a great Christmas romcom that happens to have a Big Boy hero who's an amazing dirty talker.
--The Duke Gets Desperate by Diana Quincy has a WHIMSICALLY ZANY dirty talker duke of the "paint me a vivid picture with your dirty talk" variety.

" Once, in her much younger years, he'd had worries for the future of their crown. For Evelyn came out screaming with a might, a fierceness in tiny fists that he knew would move mountains, and Joanna was sassing her nurses before able to walk. Isolde had been, at her core, always a gentler kind; maybe akin more to their mother, than he at all, an opposite to his velocity, a rounded edge to a family of jagged ones. " You do not realize how my heart swells so with pride when I think of the day that she will be yours, and you, Scotland's. " How could Graeme have known the extra care && attention Isolde have been giving things came from a place of farewell && goodbye, than of rising to one's duty? A need to ensure things were in place, for a passing... how could he have known?

Closed starter: Isolde Stuart and Joanna Stuart (@hcrexcellency)
Location: The Stuart quarters during the attack
Evelyn was taken. The news hit Isolde like a ton of bricks, knocking whatever air had been in her out, leaving her gasping. No.No. Not Evelyn. She looked up into her sister's eyes and she could see it there, the fiery determination. "Jo, you can't..." she began but Joanna was already grabbing all around her room, yanking on her quiver quickly, a knife flashing in her hand. "Joanna, you cannot go and face all those guards alone...Jo!" Her cries seemed to fall on deaf ears as her sister moved like a tornado through the room. "Joanna Stuart!" Isolde finally shouted in desperation, causing Joanna to look at her finally as she staggered back towards the bed. "I can't have you dashing into danger too. If something were to happen...you cannot know how it would destroy me. I'm begging you Jo...we need to sit for a moment and think this out."

Love was a plague. In the earlier days of her youth, Joanna would curse the stars for whatever punishment it wished to bestow on her for being so unlucky in love. Only now, they laughed back at her for giving her heart into the hands of a liar, not a bit of everything that happened between them standing in any form of truth so he could, instead, get her money... or was it that he lying to someone else...? The mental game of catch between both possibilities made her dizzy, but she trusted him. Why would he betray her unless he lied to his most beloved sister? Even if that were true, would it make up for the humiliating feeling of looking like a love sick fool who had fallen right into the trap of a trickster? Have patience was Reuben's plea to her, two words she would not forget as they were not the three she'd hoped to hear. But she tried, nonetheless, to have patience, taking but a few days to be alone with her thoughts and stop herself from jumping to any conclusions based on whatever Isolde, Blair, or Valentina might say to her. Instead, she let the woods talk to her, astride her horse as the shades of green faded together the faster she went, creating a void only she could live in. What would she even say to him? Would she resort back to the cordial, elegant princess who was polite and rigid so that he would no longer have to play this game of pretend beside her? A petty and bitter choice to make. Or would she run right into his embrace in tears as though it had never occurred? Perhaps the easiest way out, but what of her dignity then?
If she were not bolting so fast upon her horse, she would have seen the upcoming sharp turn, but alas, as the horse came to such a screeching halt, the momentum gradually pulled Joanna off the horse and onto the ground with a thud. No broken bones, thankfully, but as she bathed in her chambers, her ladies maids regarded a rather large bruise on her left shoulder blade. The bruise would be easily concealed as she dressed in her nightgown and robe. Though, as she sat in front of her mirror, she pulled the gown down to get a better look at it herself, a searing pain that would surely melt away soon enough. The door to her chambers open and she remained still, her back to the door. Through the mirror she'd expected to see her sister, but instead she'd seen the look of her betrothed. Immediately wrathful gaze fell upon her ladies maids, whom apparently could not keep their mouths shut. This was not a conversation she was prepared for just yet, but perhaps the spontaneity of it may cause her to stop thinking for a while, which was what got her in trouble in the first place. "Do not fret," she said quietly, refusing to turn around, unsure if she says it to bring down the pretend persona that Dorit claimed he wore so well, or to quell the worry of the man who truly adored her, "I am fine... I simply fell off my horse. It hurts a bit, but it should mend itself in no time..."

There are promises he made Isolde - to love her forever, to make her smile in her darkest days. Hell, he'd sworn off the heavy drink for her. But this is one promise he never made to her. Even if it was implied in their exchanges, and Isolde's willfulness to allow her family peace in these last few years. She is the love of his life, and she deserved to live the remainder of her days with the totality of her sibling's love. If Javier knew then what he knew now... He'd wish to know earlier, and make the most of this time.
No love lost between them, but Javier decides to start with Joanna. The Stuart girls are famously tight-knit, yet somehow he knows that Joanna is willful enough to see past the heartbreak of his news. A hope that, at the end of it, she can find it in her to bring light to Isolde's days. He awaits by the apartments of her in-laws-to-obe, preferring this to the outskirts of the Stuart's apartments. "Joanna." Javier calls for her, his voice gravelly and uncertain. It is serious, and the smiling King with the debonair attitude is reduced to a man with a broken heart. "We need to talk. It's about Isolde."

Reading stuff
So, I am reading Maggie Stiefvater’s The Raven Boys and
a. absolutely nothing happens. Honestly, if you want plot, any plot, this is not the book for you
and
b. This is amazing and I love it even though it’s basically a sharply-worded, hilarious and tender character study and that’s all.
Small delicious example:
Maura had decided sometime before Blue’s birth that it was barbaric to order children about, and so Blue had grown up surrounded by imperative question marks.
It makes for the disappointment of Kaitlyn Davis’ The Raven and the Dove, which had an interesting concept (even if borrowed from Tristan and Isolde) but absolutely shoddy execution, with cardboard characters all of whom bore me, except two whom I officially hate.
Oh, and out of all the YA binge books I read recently, Joanna Hathaway’s Glass Alliance series (basically a YA fantasy take on WWI) is still by far the best. It is so freaking amazing, I must make its own post.

It was a banner year for female filmmakers at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, as each of the four Grand Jury Prizes given to competition films — the festival’s highest honors, as voted on by individual juries — was directed or co-directed by a female filmmaker. But “Clemency” filmmaker Chinonye Chukwu broke down a new barrier: she’s the first black woman to win the the festival’s biggest prize, the Grand Jury Prize for her U.S. Dramatic entry. Chukwu both wrote and directed the death row drama, which stars Alfre Woodard as a prison guard struggling with the emotional demands of her job.
In IndieWire’s review, Eric Kohn wrote of the film, “Alfre Woodard embodies the extraordinary challenges of a woman tasked with sending men to their death, while bottling up her emotions so tight she looks as if she might blow. Writer-director Chinonye Chukwu’s second feature maintains the quiet, steady rhythms of a woman so consumed by her routine that by the end of the opening credits, it appears to have consumed her humanity as well.”
Chukwu joins Desiree Akhavan, Ryan Coogler, Debra Granik, Damien Chazelle, and many more big names as winning the Grand Jury Prize for their U.S. Dramatic entries. Chukwu previously directed the 2012 drama “alaskaLand,” and has been directing short films since 2009.
In 2012, director Ava DuVernay became the first black woman to win a directing award at the annual festival, for her second narrative offering, “Middle of Nowhere.”
This year’s other Grand Jury Prize winners include Nanfu Wang’s “One Child Nation” (U.S. Documentary), Joanna Hogg’s “The Souvenir” (World Dramatic), and Tamara Kotevska and Ljubomir Stefanov’s “Honeyland” (World Documentary). Of note, last year’s winners boasted four female directors taking home the individual directing awards, including Sara Colangelo, Alexandria Bombach, Sandi Tan, and Isold Uggadottir.
“Clemency” is still seeking U.S. distribution.

Pride scuffed, rejection-sensitive as the Prince was, Reuben had decided to try && keep his distance for now from the rest of the Scottish royal family. Probably for the best, anyhow - secrets seemed to balance one another precariously lately, and he had some fear of all of his misdeeds finally toppling over onto him. A worry for another day, Reuben decided, as she slunk around a corner to attempt to dash, unseen, across the open halls of the Stuart chambers && around the corner from Joanna's room, their usual place to first meet. Unfortunately, Reuben forgot the most important rule, and didn't look twice. Twirling around the corner, he barely had the chance to take a step before bumping directly into... of course. Joanna's sister. Another one. Reuben instantly stopped is his tracks, the apologies spilling from his lips as he reached to steady the Princess. What a first impression. Now he had to explain his reason for being by there in the first place, and for creeping around corners. " Princess Isolde! I- My apologies, I- I was not watching where I was going. Are you... alright? I really am sorry. I was just- I, ah- I was looking for... Nevermind. I should heed caution. "
