zach is truly the type of struggling person to say "alright I'm going to bed" and then as soon as he shuts the door you hear the world is ugly by mcr blasting

Ruben's arc
I'll shut up soon, but I keep thinking about how Ruben is the quiet tragedy in If This Gets Out. There are so many comments about his life that are dropped in and left there.
Like, he was raised by an emotionally abusive narcissist and a father who never stood up for him against her. He went to music camp to please his mom, and makes friends with a guy (Jon) on her orders. Because of this, he ends up in the band formed by Jon's famous father, where he is forced to hide his sexuality when he doesn't want to, and limit his own talent in case he outshines the other band members. He dates a bunch of guys that abuse him the same way his mother did, treating him as something they can use for their own gains, and is (alluded to) SAd or close to it when he's forced to do things for them in order to keep them and their "love".
Then he finally finds something real with the guy he has feelings for (Zach) and Zach immediately freaks out and pulls away, leaving Ruben terrified he's going to lose his whole found family. He's incredibly anxious and afraid because he's spent his whole life being told he's not lovable if he isn't perfect and doing things for other people. Zach (accidentally) calls Ruben ugly in front of the world, while ignoring him (imagine kissing your crush, only to have him pull away, promise to talk then continually cancel your attempts to work through it, and then telling the world they can't see why people would find you attractive!) My heart broke at that part.
Then they finally work things out and he finally gets a moment of happiness, for probably the first time in his life, and abusive people in power (the story of his life) start interfering and separating him and Zach. To add to it, he's been begging to come out so he doesn't have to sneak around and lie and be afraid (which is another layer of trauma) every time he loves someone, and he finally discovers they're never going to let him come out, and he has to sacrifice his own happiness and wellbeing for the band. Then when the band rally around him and try to help him come out anyway, he's literally and figuratively silenced by his abusers, who then take him to court for 'defamation' when all he's doing is finally speaking out about the years of abuse he's endured.
I also found it very smart how the authors juxtapose Zach and Ruben, because most characters view Zach as the people-pleaser, but Ruben has that in common with Zach. The whole book, Ruben allows himself to be silenced and shoved into a corner for the band, allows his literal identity to be denied for the band, gives Zach plenty of grace to work through his bisexuality even when it crosses over into cruelty sometimes, allows his Mom to emotionally abuse him while still buying her property etc... Ruben's toxic trait of people pleasing is called out less than Zach's but it's as much at the heart of his arc as it is Zach's. In a way, two people-pleasers found each other and were so horrified at each other's insistence on neglecting themselves, they managed to convince each other to stand up for themselves. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

and I have finished it, my first book of 2024.
Starting 'If this gets out' I didn't think that I would enjoy it quite as much as I did. But, there's some solid stuff in there that makes me love it all the more.
First; the whole storyline with their management and how it ruined the boys in different ways. The sense of false security because they were being managed by Jon's dad and the resolution with the mom squad. Really great set-up and resolution if you ask me. Then, the romance between Zach and Ruben; I liked them more than I was expecting. Helping each other with the things they struggle with the most (Zach being able to actually voice his opinions and Ruben setting boundaries with his mom) was really sweet to read. Their relationship is believable and well-built. And I will always be a sucker for friends to lovers.
But what do liked the most? It was the friendship between all 4 boys, the support they have for each other and how clear it is that they aren't just a band. I love that we get to see the relationship between the 4 of them grow. They trust each other, love each other and honestly I would want to be friends with them just because of their dynamic together. Jon became my favorite character, and honestly I only had him for 400 pages but if more bad things happen to him I'm gonna riot.
So anyways; solid book! Would definitely read it again

If This Gets Out - Chapter 9
Fuck Ruben's mother. What the fuck is that woman's problem? Treating your child like that is disgusting.

Ok, so, so far, I'm at the part where they're eating out and discussing the fake news article. I love how Zach is struggling to figure out his sexuality and how Ruben is super overthinking! Like, I can't wait to keep updating on how it goes!!

I finished reading If This Gets Out this morning (because who needs sleep before work!? Lol) and it only left me wanting to read more of the 4 friends' journey. So I'm sorry, but I have to talk about it at least for a bit.
This was the first book I finished in literal YEARS, so I really didn't expect to get sucked in so easily. I mean, I expected the theme would appeal to me otherwise I wouldn't have bought the book in the first place. But I really didn't think it would leave me wanting to do nothing more but continue reading all day..
First, the writing is so good! The story just flows nicely from the very beginning. I do love my boybands and knowing all the challenges mentioned in the book were realistic made the read all the more interesting and made me even more invested in the Saturday story every step of the way.
I really liked that from the start it was obvious that the boys were true friends and really cared for one another, too (which, as far as I know, actually isn't as common in boyband culture). Also, all of them are genuinely good people which makes you wanna root for them all the more to succeed.
Another bonus point for the quality writing - you know from the storytelling most of what's about to unfold.. yet somehow it makes wanna get to that particular plot even faster.
I have to admit, I initially had my doubts about where Jon's loyalty lied when it came to his father and his friends.. But by the time Ruben actually accused him of trying to resolve The Tension just for the band's sake, I was like "How can you say that!?", lol. Sorry I ever doubted you, honey!
I think my absolute favorite moment from the book was the hug Mrs. Phan gave Jon. Just a tiny little scene, yet it made me tear up.
Of course, I might be biased because Angel's my favorite character. I mean, come on!
Tumblr media
What can I say!? I have a type - hilarious And cocky. I made my peace with that. Obviously, that's not the only reason why he's my favorite. But I really did love all of the boys and the order of favorites on the other positions kept changing constantly.
I felt the romance between Ruben and Zach was developing at a nice pace as well. Although I can't even count the times I slammed the book against my forehead during The Tension.. 😅
Okay, I would go into more detail but the post is already much longer than I anticipated and I have to get back to work anyway, lol.
Finally.. Was the book perfect? No. Was there any moment I thought was bad? Also no. So I can only recommend it.
One last thing, though. I will forever be bitter that Ruben unintentionally basically confirming ANJON in Rome was never mentioned again.. Not even a single tweet!? Really!? J/K

“Everyone wants the world to see them as they are. The truth isn’t the problem. The problem is that the world doesn’t always make the truth safe for us to share.” - Ruben Montez, If This Gets Out

Okay, having If This Gets Out thoughts again.
Like, Jon would have so many trust issues with their new management, he would have a hard time trusting any of their new managers even if he rationally knows that they aren't all like his dad. He would make a point of making sure that the others aren't hurt again, fuck his own well-being his friends are more important than that.
And one day, Angel just has to sit the guy down and give him the 'stop only thinking about our well-beings for once' talk.
