so.

we've been expecting a dan video for a while now, i've been very scared and curious as to what he was going to make it about after being away for so long. he did confirm he was going to upload in june so every night i was going to bed with anticipation because, because of timezones he'll usually upload early in the morning for me (3-6am).

so it's Friday morning. there's this weird alarm sound, like an octopus, and because i'm asleep, i'm really confused and thought it was my sister (found out later it was the army base that i live on lockdown alarm or something) so i woke up, then it stopped so hey I check my phone to see how long i have to sleep for.

the first thing I see is THE FUXKING TITLE 'basically i'm gay'. i do not comprehend it. then i check the time (6:10) i look at the notification again. daniel howell. my heart beats faster. my fingers are literally shaking. I'm delirious. 'what the fuck' i whisper over and over again to myself. scared to click, i go onto tumblr, it's oddly quiet. everyone must be watching it, because it hasn't been that long since he uploaded. still shaking, i click on the video and watch his face, he takes a deep breath, "hello internet".

then i watch it. I am shocked, still shaken, i cry when he explains how lonely he was, how that kid pushed him against a locker by the neck and slapped him. I cry when he tells us how he couldn't take it anymore and attempted suicide. then i sobbed when he said 'I'm glad I failed' i laughed when he did that argument thing 'its not adam and steve' and 'why can't we have straight pride' (🙄). then it finishes and before I have time to think and digest all that, taylor swift is doing a livestream on instagram and she's announcing the name of her album (lover) when it's coming out (August 23) her new single (you need to calm down) and music video (comes out tonight at 10 15pm). at this point i'm fucking bewildered and sososoososo happy and shit i need to go to school, then to a sleepover...

so i wont have time to think properly until Saturday afternoom, which is shit. I get to school. im venting to people. it hits me again that DAN ACTUALLY DID THAT WTF then i just. start crying. in school. omg. so i try to sit down on my suitcase (bear in mind that i lugged a suitcase, sleeping bag and pillow to school that day, that was hard work) then i fell off it. that was fun. I spend literally 5 seconds sobbing hysterically until i compose myself, wipe away my tears and stand up. I'mokayi.okayoimokayimokayimokayimokay (I WASN'T OKAY).

so i do school, remembering it all, needing to watch it again, feeling sososso proud and happy of dan. then taylor swift releases her song. and lo and behold its about fucking all the homophobic people and haters and trolls ("there is sunshine at the parade, but you would rather be in the dark age") and when i realized (at this point i'm waiting for the bus at the bus stop) i throw my phone down, walk around a pole, collapse to the ground and SOB. I love taylor so much i love dan so much wtf. I LITERALLY haven't felt so much emotions for a WHILE (at least, idk, months, even more)

anyways,no time to sit in a dark room and relax, time for a party. I end up getting literally 0 sleep, i didnt sleep once. it was SO bad. I was so tired i zoned out for a bit when it got to like 5am, it felt like I was dreaming and nothing was actually real. so, i've just had the most emotional day of my life plus no sleep. not. good. I text my mum to pick me up bc at this point i've had enough. then they said they were making waffles for breakfast and i was like to my mum 'dont worry about it its fine' so i endured. for the waffles (they were great btw).

finally i was home alone. I needed to get my life in order. I had a shower. I learnt the lyrics to taylor's song. I rewatched dan's video. i rewatched as many dan and phil videos as i could with this new perspective. I cried without judgement.

and now all is okay. i didn't even cover everything, i just had to get it out. thank you for listening. I needed to vent, if anyone read all this i'm surprised and also sorry.

Since March 18, 2021, 96,900 accounts have uploaded 525,000 videos to YouTube with the hashtag #shorts.

In the three weeks ending April 8, 2021, they collectively received 17.4 billion (with a "b") views. So, how popular are YouTube Shorts? Without a doubt.

Can YouTube Shorts Be Profited From?

This could explain why the lengthier version is used in nearly three-quarters of the films published with the #Shorts hashtag since March 18, 2021. Is this to imply that making a shorter version of Shorts is a "faith-based initiative"?

Let's take a look at Sherman's post once more.

Near the end, he discusses how YouTube has aided a generation of creators in turning their passion into a business, paying out more than $30 billion to them in the last three years. Okay, that's OK. But what about Shorts' shorter version?

Sherman continued,

“Because Shorts is a new way to watch and produce on YouTube, we're rethinking how to commercialize Shorts and reward creators for their work.”

They're still figuring out how to monetize this format in the future, so stay tuned for more information. Alternatively, the solution may already be hiding in plain sight, as I suspect.

YouTube unveiled BrandConnect on June 16, 2020, promising to make it easier for creators and marketers to be more real and effective. Henry Scott-Green, the Product Manager of YouTube BrandConnect, said in a post on the Official YouTube Blog unveiling insights-based matchmaking tools to provide eligible creators additional access to sponsored content:

“Our proactive matchmaking delivers highly engaging and relevant sponsored content because of the connection that creators have with their followers. And it's working: the average deal size across the complete service package has increased by more than 260 percent in the last two years.”

He went on to say that new measurement tools like Brand Interest Lift, Influencer Lift, and organic view-through dialogues would provide more accountability and real-time marketing results. He explained that this allows marketers to assess the impact and return on investment of influencer marketing on YouTube.

BrandConnect's first launch was hampered by a number of problems, including the COVID-19 epidemic and early eligibility limits. (Only creators with 25,000+ subscribers in the United States were eligible.) So, if YouTube is looking at future revenue options, my utterly unscientific wild guess is that one of them will likely be reducing the constraints for BrandConnect participation.

5/4 Daily Update

So I suck at managing my time. I keep starting projects and not finishing them. I’m three weeks behind on SASS and haven’t updated Twisted Destiny in months. I’m trying to be better, and the best way to do that is to be open about my workflow so strangers online can be mean to me when I fuck up.

Currently, my ongoing projects are:

A book (Double Elimination: The Machine) which is coming out in the fall and should have had its rough draft done by now yet is waffling in the later chapters.

A weekly podcast (Silver Age/Silver Screen) which I stopped uploading weekly even though I still record it weekly.

A twice weekly blog analyzing Fire Emblem Fates (Fates Deep Dive).

An absurdly long JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure fanfic (Twisted Destiny) which I haven’t updated since New Years.

Seven different short stories (His War, Elves, Your Inheritance, Sixth, and a trilogy of short stories based off Double Elimination) plus another half dozen I need to send to magazines.

A video essay on FATWS which will be a sequel to the last video essay I made.

A pokemon challenge run video.

A tabletop role-playing game.

A video game adaptation of the board game I made last year.

An interactive story (The Tavern)

To say nothing of all the other projects I want to start (D&D stories, video game reviews, a ton of book and short story ideas).

This is not sustainable. I can’t work on all of this at the same time and I can’t keep starting new projects.

So, I’m making a schedule and doing daily updates make sure I get work done. SASS is going to update on Wednesdays and Saturdays until I get back on track, after that it’ll just be Wednesdays. Fates Deep Dive will continue updating on Mondays and Fridays. I’m going to try and do entire TD arcs at once instead of split over a month and releasing them in the middle of the month. Most importantly, I’m going to try and do a single big project at a time, and get them out early in the month. The Pokemon thing is the easiest, so I’ll do it first. So, let’s try a daily update. Also three AM is still the day before don’t @ me.

Currently the Sun is in 0 degrees Cancer, marking the Summer solstice, a time when according to myth the veils between worlds are thinner and there are rituals one must perform to keep the evil spirits from taking the opportunity to invade our minds and our lives. Hah! Has no one noticed lately, Earth seems be full up on its evil spirits quota!

With many planets in Cancer, I am always quite physically informed in the movements of the Moon and ingresses of other heavenly bodies in signs that make contact with my Cancer planets: Crabs are extremely sensitive to the “undercurrents” that affect their home environment and sense of safety. I don’t even have to look at the ephemeris to know when the Moon has moved signs or perfected a New or Full phase.

This solstice, in the midst of feeling rather anxious and breathless — I feel as if big shifts are coming our way like massive tidal waves that look like they could be made by Cthulhu — perhaps in anticipation of the upcoming eclipses in July and retrogression of Mars and Venus etc., I had a sort of epiphany about retrograde planets in transit and in one’s natal chart.

From my still-incomplete knowledge of astrology: The Western school views retrogrades as a time to ‘re-view, re-visit, re-do’, while practitioners of the Vedic form view retrograde planets in a natal chart as a symbol of their amplified energy. Mulling over my own experiences of retrograde planets, in personal life and astrological practice, I came to the realisation just now that perhaps the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

When a planet goes ‘retrograde’, that is just the apparent motion of the heavenly body from Earth’s point of view, but what is actually happening is that Earth is outpacing the planet which could symbolically be seen as “getting away with it.”

In astrology as in most other esoteric spiritual practices the Earth is viewed as the realm of physical manifestation, ideally, of the Divine will or direction (I have recently been studying the Kabbalist Tree of Life, Sephirot, and the Rosicrucian Rose Cross, which illustrate this idea so intriguingly beautifully). I say ideally because like every Tarot card has a different meaning in reverse; like every planet and sign in astrology has a higher and lower expression, so every human has shades of ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ which determine what an individual might do with their free will — will they materialise that Divine inspiration for ‘good’? Or ‘bad’?

When I synthesise all the ideas above, I visualise (I only truly understand anything through immersive visualisation) the retrograde effect as: A human on earth, rat-racing forward, getting ahead of themselves in the pursuit or expression of an urge, suddenly stopping, realising something is missing, looking back to see their goal is falling away from them, it’s being taken away! Then retracing their steps to get back to Start, discovering on the way something they’d dropped, to place themselves once again in tandem with the project schedule (planet agenda). Or differently, A person leaving their house to go somewhere, getting to the car only to realise they’ve left their keys back home so they turn back to fetch them, realising in the process they’d left their heating on!

In transit terms this seems to fit the Western view of review times during retrograde.

Also, from Earth’s perspective, when a planet is retrograde you are spotting it in a portion of sky you’ve already looked at before, so symbolically too, you are called to attend to something from the past rather than initiate new projects. Since planetary retrogrades are less frequent than their direct motion, they symbolise periodic flips in perspective which might return to normal once the planet resumes normal movement, so anything initiated at this time, you’ll most likely have different feelings about once the tide changes, hence the prediction of doom associated with retrograde-born initiatives.

In natal terms I can appreciate how the Vedic view of amplified power comes through because those who are born with a ‘constant’ feeling like their goal/objective is falling away from them will, in the planet’s positive expression, try doubly harder to get to it. Since achieving the retrograde planet’s forward expression does not come easy, and requires quite a bit of trial and error to refine their methods, people with natal retrogrades are perhaps even better at what they ultimately achieve — a hard-won victory! I know a few people with retrograde Venus in their natal chart who are really good at amassing money in spite of, or perhaps because of, their poverty mindset.

Individuals with retrograde Saturn are likely to desire approval from a father or authority figure so much that they self-regulate themselves to the point of toil, achieving high ranks and authority positions (Saturn) for themselves in the bargain! Of course, on the negative side, this same desire for approval can cause fears or blocks in their creative expression or intuitive intelligence.

Being on the greyer side of 30, I have lived through many retrograde transits myself but in 2018 I have become acutely aware of three whose impact was too stark to ignore.

Saturn retrograde in my First House of Will: In line with Saturn’s message of toil I have enrolled for an educational course that I hope will launch me into a completely different, yet perfectly resonant with me, career. As I got to grips with studies at this age and stage, I put off getting my balcony door fixed, which was threatening to fall off any day. But it so happened, one thing led to another, and I was forced to postpone taking my exams for this course to the next semester because, upon closer inspection, along with the door, the roof was crumbling, as were the walls and various other parts of the house! I had to pause my ambitions for an overlooked task which would only have created a bigger block at a much more crucial time further up ahead in my course.

Jupiter retrograde in my 11th house of wishes and networks: My pursuit of finding “my tribe” (also linked to my course above) also got stalled with the home renovation and interestingly, this period and a little before it, has witnessed a natural ‘trimming away’ of friendships and associations perhaps to make space for the new? Or as we might find out when Jupiter turns direct, to return in my life better aligned with my new goals.

Neptune retrograde in my 3rd house of communication, mental and manual abilities, and kinship: The standstill of Neptune just a few days back couldn’t have been more obvious had it dropped a piano on my head! Here I was merrily exchanging messages, communicating with people when suddenly, I realised there was a different meaning to what was being communicated to me and I had been perceiving it as quite the opposite! Certain facts came to light too that gave me a BIG pause for review.

This year we have more ahead, Mars (our drive, ‘warrior’ spirit, energy, lust) turns retrograde on 26th June, Uranus (our unfettered, ‘eccentric’ drive and will) on 3rd August, Venus (our sense of romance, harmony, pleasure, abundance) on 5th October, and of course Mercury (our cognitive abilities, communication skills, logic) on 26th July and again on 16th November.

I have only written here the personal expressions of each planet but of course these planets also manifest their lessons as external events through the agents associated with each but I’ve other work to do and I’m beat, perhaps I’ll update this already rather long post another time to list them all!

Tapping private sector's best tech solutions to serve citizens, Tech News & Top Stories

People today expect digital services to be immediate and customised, and the Government must be ready to incorporate the best solutions from the private sector to meet these expectations, Minister-in-charge of the Smart Nation Initiative Vivian Balakrishnan said yesterday.

This, in turn, allows the Government to become a “reference customer” for private companies selling services to the public sector, opening up more opportunities for them, Dr Balakrishnan said at the Stack 2020 Developer Conference organised by the Government Technology Agency.

He pointed to two recent initiatives as examples of how the Government intends to foster public-private collaboration in “both action and words”, including efforts to tap commercial cloud services.

“We are working with three leading providers – Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform – to bring the cutting edge of cloud technology to bear in the digital services we provide our citizens,” he said.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had announced in 2018 that the Government would begin to move some of its IT systems to a commercial cloud service.

More than 150 systems have been moved to the cloud service as of June this year, including those involving tax administration and electronic examinations.

Dr Balakrishnan, who is also Foreign Minister, drew attention to the Singapore Government Developer Portal, soft-launched earlier this year, which gives software developers key information on government tech solutions and the ability to build on and integrate them into their own applications.

“What we really hope is that you will use these tools to build, test and improve your digital products, and also to pitch them to us,” he told the developers.

“Because if it works, we want to incorporate that into our suite of services as well.”

During a dialogue at the conference, Dr Balakrishnan said both he and PM Lee took a keen interest in the developments on the portal, and “will always be there to ask the awkward questions”.

Government chief digital technology officer Chan Cheow Hoe, who was also part of the dialogue, said a supportive leadership has been “very important” in helping Singapore to move quickly and effectively in the tech space, adding that the government tech ecosystem has come a long way since he joined the agency in 2014.

“When I first joined, the biggest challenge was that we didn’t have the platforms. So my poor engineers had to code on their computers, put in a thumb drive, take a bus to the data centre and then plug the thumb drive in (in order to upload the code),” he said.

“So the democratisation of technology in terms of (solutions like) the cloud has made us a lot more effective and able to deliver (results) in weeks, which was impossible before.”

This year’s Stack conference, taking place over two days starting yesterday, is held in a virtual format. It is the second edition after the inaugural one in 2018.

The conference brings together developers from the public and private sectors to share knowledge on a wide variety of topics, such as cloud technology, app development and a new segment on Covid-19 tech.

TikTok and 53 other iOS apps still snoop your sensitive clipboard data

In March, researchers uncovered a troubling privacy grab by more than four dozen iOS apps including TikTok, the Chinese-owned social media and video-sharing phenomenon that has taken the Internet by storm. Despite TikTok vowing to curb the practice, it continues to access some of Apple users’ most sensitive data, which can include passwords, cryptocurrency wallet addresses, account-reset links, and personal messages. Another 53 apps identified in March haven’t stopped either.

The privacy invasion is the result of the apps repeatedly reading any text that happens to reside in clipboards, which computers and other devices use to store data that has been cut or copied from things like password managers and email programs. With no clear reason for doing so, researchers Talal Haj Bakry and Tommy Mysk found, the apps deliberately called an iOS programming interface that retrieves text from users’ clipboards.

Universal snooping

In many cases, the covert reading isn’t limited to data stored on the local device. In the event the iPhone or iPad uses the same Apple ID as other Apple devices and are within roughly 10 feet of each other, all of them share a universal clipboard, meaning contents can be copied from the app of one device and pasted into an app running on a separate device.

That leaves open the possibility that an app on an iPhone will read sensitive data on the clipboards of other connected devices. This could include bitcoin addresses, passwords, or email messages that are temporarily stored on the clipboard of a nearby Mac or iPad. Despite running on a separate device, the iOS apps can easily read the sensitive data stored on the other machines.

“It’s very, very dangerous,” Mysk said in an interview on Friday, referring to the apps’ indiscriminate reading of clipboard data. “These apps are reading clipboards, and there’s no reason to do this. An app that doest have a text field to enter text has no reason to read clipboard text.”

Back in the news

While Haj Bakry and Mysk published their research in March, the invasive apps made headlines again this week with the developer beta release of iOS 14. A novel feature Apple added provides a banner warning every time an app reads clipboard contents. As large numbers of people began testing the beta release, they quickly came to appreciate just how many apps engage in the practice and just how often they do it.

TikTok in the spotlight

Recent headlines have focused particular attention on TikTok, in large part because of its massive base of active users (reported to be 800 million, with an estimated 104 million iOS installs in the first half of 2018 alone, making it the most downloaded app for that period).

TikTok’s continued snooping has gotten extra scrutiny for other reasons. When called out in March, the video-sharing provider told UK publication The Telegraph it would end the practice in the coming weeks. Mysk said that the app never stopped the monitoring. What’s more, a Wednesday Twitter thread revealed that the clipboard reading occurred each time a user entered a punctuation mark or tapped the space bar while composing a comment. That means the clipboard reading can happen every second or so, a much more aggressive pace than documented in the March research, which found monitoring happened when the app was opened or reopened.

In a statement, TikTok representatives wrote:

Following the beta release of iOS14 on June 22, users saw notifications while using a number of popular apps. For TikTok, this was triggered by a feature designed to identify repetitive, spammy behavior. We have already submitted an updated version of the app to the App Store removing the anti-spam feature to eliminate any potential confusion.

TikTok is committed to protecting users’ privacy and being transparent about how our app works. We look forward to welcoming outside experts to our Transparency Center later this year.

On background, a spokesperson said that TikTok for Android never implemented the anti-spam feature.

I sent follow-up questions asking (1) if the TikTok version for Android monitored clipboards for any other reason, (2) if any clipboard text was uploaded from the device, and (3) why TikTok didn’t remove the monitoring as promised in March. The spokesperson has yet to respond. This post will be updated if a reply comes later.

Shortly after the report was published, 10% Happier: Meditation and Hotel Tonight promised to stop the behavior and quickly followed through. TikTik also promised to stop but has never done so, Mysk said. None of the other apps has stopped either, he said.

Clipboard reading done right

In some cases, clipboard reading can make apps much more useful. The UPS iPhone app, for instance, pulls text from the clipboard and in the event the text matches the characteristics of a tracking number, the app prompts the user to track the corresponding package. Google Chrome also pulls text and, in the event it’s a URL, will prompt the user to browse to it. The Pixelmator photo editor reads data only if it’s an image. If it is, Pixelmator will prompt the user to open it for editing. In all three cases, the data reading has a clear use case and is transparent.

TikTok and the other offending apps, by contrast, access the clipboard for no clear reason and with no indication they are doing so. For many apps, it’s hard to see any legitimate performance or usability reason for the access. Mysk said that Apple plans to credit his and Haj Bakry’s research as a catalyst for the new clipboard notification put into iOS 14.

The clipboard reading Haj Bakry and Mysk reported raises concerns that likely extend to those using Android and possibly other operating systems. Mysk said that clipboard reading in Android apps is “even worse” than iOS because the OS APIs are so much more lenient. Until version 10, for instance, Android allowed apps running in the background to read the clipboard. iOS apps, by contrast, can read or query clipboards only when active (that is, running in the foreground).

Mysk said that Apple’s notification feature is a good start but, ultimately, Apple and Google should do more. One possibility is to make clipboard access a standard permission, just as access to a mic or camera is now. Another possibility is to require app developers to disclose precisely what clipboard data is accessed and what the app does with it.

For now, users should remain aware that any data stored in the clipboard—despite it being inconspicuous to the naked eye—can be regularly accessed by apps that in many cases aren’t even installed locally on the device. When in doubt, flush the clipboard data by copying a character, word, or other piece of innocuous data.
