a misaeng valentine's day au , if you will .
"Section Chief Cheon, Deputy Kim."
The two yell out affirmatives, then wince at their volume and huddle closer into the circle they've formed in front of Deputy Manager Oh's desk. The man in question shoots them a glare but otherwise doesn't comment on it. Thankfully, the office is empty.
"Are the preparations for tomorrow done?"
"Yes sir," Cheon nods, his mouth set in a grim line. "I've already notified the receptionist to make sure that Geurae's deliveries are to be thrown away immediately. I also made sure to ask them to not allow any delivery workers up to our floor."
"Good work, Cheon. Kim, what about you?"
"I've switched all of Geurae's things with mine, so he'll be able to work at my desk with no issues. I've also prepared 2 spray bottles full of water if any of those... things try to come in."
"Excellent. I've also pulled some strings so that I can attend some of the meetings Jang Geurae has tomorrow." Oh Sangshik lets out a severe sigh and claps both of his subordinates on the shoulder. "Tomorrow is going to be a warzone, but we've done the best we could to prepare for it. Get some rest tonight, so we can fight tomorrow, alright?"
The following chorus of "Yes, sir!" rings out loud and clear throughout the empty office.
The next day, Geurae rounds the corner to find a shocking sight. Quickly jogging to the Sales Team 3 office, he bows in greeting with a flustered expression.
"Good morning everyone! I didn't expect all of you to be here so early."
"You're as energetic as ever, Jang Geurae." Cheon replies. "We have a busy day today, so make sure you're prepared."
"Yes, sir! I'll work hard today as well!"
"Jang Geurae, you're gonna pierce my eardrums." Kim deadpans as Geurae shrugs off his jacket and carefully places his bag on his desk. "Did something good happen- What is that?"
"Hmm?" Geurae asks distractedly, until he realises that Kim is staring straight at the pouch he's holding. "Oh, this was a Valentine's Day gift!"
The temperature drops imperceptibly, as the three members of Sales Team 3 slowly raise their heads to stare at Geurae with unreadable expressions.
He's none the wiser.
"Han Seokyool gave it to me in the lift." Geurae continues, not noticing the way Kim mutters something under his breath and Cheon rolls his eyes. "I didn't even realise it was Valentine's Day today because I was too busy preparing for today's meetings, but he made the pouch himself. It was really nice of him!"
The office falls into a deafening silence for a few moments before Oh gets up and throws his pen to the ground. "Han Seokyool that sneaky little bastard-" He yells, veins popping in his neck before he cuts himself off, visibly trying to calm himself down. "Forget that. So. He didn't do anything else right?"
Geurae looks down at the pouch he's cradling oh so carefully. At the memory of him giving the man a kiss as a token of gratitude, no matter how innocent it was, he can't help the blush that tinges the tips of his ears.
"I'm going to kill that bastard."
"Huh?" Geurae asks with widened eyes, blinking rapidly as he tries to figure out why Oh is holding the letter opener he uses for mail with a white-knuckled grip. "He didn't do anything to me, I'm just a bit embarrassed…"
That stops Oh in his tracks, already poised to march out of the office to the 16th floor.
"Tell us."
Geurae squirms, pinned under the deadly stares of his superiors, though he eventually sighs and gives in.
"I gave him a light peck on the cheek." he mumbles, his ears turning so red they might as well be bleeding.
This time, Oh's calendar takes the fall.
"I'm going to visit the 16th floor." Oh says calmly.
"Oh! I can help you if you need me to-"
"YOU." Oh bellows, jamming his index finger in Geurae's direction with wild eyes, his gaze murderous. He storms past them, letter opener in hand. "Stay here. Work. Don't even dream of leaving this office unless it's for your meetings today."
"But what about lunch?"
"WE'RE GETTING TAKEAWAY!"
Then he's gone.
Still confused from the entire ordeal, Geurae turns to the remaining members of Sales Team 3 for answers.
He doesn't get any answers.
"Cheon," Kim starts, staring intently at one of the spray bottles on his desk, "do you think I can get away with it if I replace this with toilet water?"
The man hums thoughtfully before shaking his head. "What about gochujang?"
"You're a genius, Cheon. Should I go down and borrow some from the cafeteria auntie?"
"While you're at it, add some vinegar. I'll go check on Oh if he needs any help. Lord knows we don't need another meeting with HR again."
"Then what about-"
"Just sit here and work!"
If he wasn't getting yelled at, Geurae would marvel at how well they sync with each other. Instead, he hurriedly takes his seat at his desk, that for some reason has been switched to Kim's original spot, and pulls out some files to skim through.
He has a lot of work to do today, after all.
watching misaeng , the only thing i could think about was " damn , valentine's day must be rough when you have someone like jang geurae in the team " then it was like i was slapped with a lightbulb
like , imagine jang geurae's schedule on valentine's day so jam packed with meetings because every single client is trying to woo him , yet he's totally unaware of the chaos . even the office isn't safe , and he only has 3 middle-aged men who are close to comitting murder to those who try to chat him up .
i do have the scene between jang geurae and han seokyool written out , but it didn't quite seem to fit so i just wrote this one !
but i honestly love misaeng so much it's honestly in my top 5 kdramas !!!

What are your other 2 close options for "pick a depression drama" pool? (And obviously, why?) (And hiii~)
ehh hiiiii friend <3333
My other two options are Misaeng and Call It Love.
Misaeng - this show came through when I got through nearly a yr into proper full time work life. it was way too relatable, about fitting in a dept that's outside of your expertise. I took on an office job dealing with manufacturing too which has very similar experiences/challenges with the plot of the show. I cried a lot watching it and I cried more rewatching it second and third time. It resonates with me but also kept me feeling validated that I've done my best, grown and kept my passion just like jang geurae and his colleagues.
Call It Love: This drama was my temporary "replacement" for My Liberation Notes. It has a different plot, but the slice of life part has the same vibe. My heart really goes out to every single character but I have to give it to kim young kwang acting as han dong jin. tho i dont entirely vibe with him as an actor lol but he captured every single sadness, pain, softness, melancholy of his character with just his body language and minute facial expressions. I was blown away and sympathised/empathised with him with all my heart, i will protect dongjin!
What's your favourite depression drama(s)?

Jalan Pulang
Ari pun bergegas memasuki masjid begitu iqomat dilantunkan.
“Jang, Ujang, geura hudang!
Rasa kecewa sedikit menyesakan hatinya. Ia jadi teringat selalu pulang menaiki sepeda melalui jalan ini. Sambil mengayuh sepeda, angin berhembus sepoi-sepoi menerpa dirina dan lonceng pengusir hama di sawah.
Ari memasuki gang menuju rumahnya. Mereka sedang asyik memandangi gadgetnya masing-masing. “’Anak zaman now ya mainnya online dong, Om’ gitu masa kata keponakan urang, Si Adi. Apa asyiknya coba?”
“Sekali-kali kamu teh cuti atuh kalau lagi libur kejepit. Pulang lah sebulan sekali. Temenin ibu kamu. Apalagi sejak Teh Ria nikah, urang sering liat ibu kamu ngelamun di teras,” kali ini Deden meluncurkan nasihatnya lewat surat. Ari pun tanpa sadar malah terdiam menatap ibunya yang sedang melamun. Garis-garis wajahnya semakin terlihat jelas melipat. Tubuhnya semakin kurus. Tangannya yang sedang memegang Al-Quran tanpa sadar bergetar lalu wajahnya terangkat mendapati Ari yang termenung. Ibu seketika itu pula langsung berdiri memanggil Ari.
Tersadar dari lamunannya, Ari berlari pelan memasuki halaman rumah. Ibu memeluk Ari erat. “Anaking teh ayeuna tos jangkung, ageung, sareng tiasa dipercanten nya[6],” begitu selalu bisik Ibu. Ari mencium tangan ibu lalu tersenyum lebar.
Anak zaman now, Si Adi, sesekali urang ajak main gobak sodor meski tetep susah lepas dari gadget.
[2] Saudaraku, gimana kabarnya? Kayaknya udah lama banget kita gak ketemu
[3] Kata ganti Aku dalam Bahasa Sunda
[4] Awas ya, jangan ngetawain!
[5] Jang, Ujang, cepat bangun! Udah kesiangan!
[7] Maaf, Saudaraku
[8] Gak mau banget!

Just rewatched ep 2 of misaeng..... I cried
- when geurae felt so helpless and upset because hes been alone all his life but now he's supposed to work as a team while hes literally an outcast in the office 😭 and the way he asks manager Oh to teach him how to, instead of treating him as an useless person 😭😭😭😭😭
- when manager Oh defends geurae and calls him "OUR boy/kid" 😭😭 and the way it was so emotional and touching for geurae. He feels like he belongs somewhere for the first time in his life

Old School X is a project interviewing X-Files fanfic authors who were posting fic during the original run of the show. New interviews are posted every Tuesday.
Interview with Jintian
Jintian has 21 X-Files stories at AO3 all posted during the original run of the show and all fics you should read if you like beautiful words and lovely character insights (and you do!). I've recced some of my favorites here before, including Argus, Diving, God's Breath, and Seven Days. Big thanks to Jintian for doing this interview.
Does it surprise you that people are still interested in reading your X-Files fanfics and others that were posted during the original run of the show (1993-2002)?
Many authors from the original run still loom large in my mind, so I'm glad to hear it. The show had great production values and cinematography and iconic characters, and I think that level of quality was reflected in fanworks. Good writing is good writing no matter how old. For myself, I'm happy if anything I made still resonates with people. What do you think of when you think about your X-Files fandom experience? What did you take away from it?
Just doing the math, I first discovered XF over half my lifetime ago. I was a sheltered introverted young'un. Online fandom introduced me to a diversity of people and perspectives I couldn't have found in my "real" life at the time. I'm especially grateful for the wisdom of women who, over the years, advised or supported me or simply led by example – not only with writing, but with everything from relationships to job interviews to finances. And I love that in so many places I've lived or traveled, I've been able to meet someone local who already feels like a friend.
Social media didn't really exist during the show's original run. How were you most involved with the X-Files online (atxc, message board, email mailing list, etc.)? The Scullyfic mailing list, ATXC, and archives were my main venues. Scullyfic was such a well-run group, with structured discussion topics, post-episode commentary, and writing challenges.
Also, an image comes to mind: for some reason my dad put our computer in the garage, where we had a fan but no air conditioning, and we lived in the US southeast which feels like the armpit of hell in the summertime. I'd sit in that sweltering muggy heat for hours getting my fandom fix. And the only way to connect to the internet was via landline, which I couldn't tie up during the day, so that meant a lot of late nights as well. My fandom equivalent of trudging miles uphill in the snow?
What did you take away from your experience with X-Files fic or with the fandom in general? With regard to fanfic, I learned how to receive and give constructive criticism, before and after posting. Even if it was "just" fanfic, most everyone wanted to improve their writing. I think that was a good mindset for me to cultivate, personally and professionally.
With regard to fandom, I learned how to be an active and analytical consumer, and that there can be many (many!) interpretations of a text. What was it that got you hooked on the X-Files as a show? The fanfic, actually. Somehow in my internet wanderings, I stumbled across Gossamer. Dawson Rambo's casefiles were also early finds. Curiosity about the characters drove me to check out the show.
What got you involved with X-Files fanfic?
As far as writing my own, I had an image in my head which I jotted down, and over several months I kept adding to it – mostly navel-gazing, not much plot. The resulting story was a hodgepodge of different POVs and different tenses. *facepalm* But I received some lovely feedback, and I felt very welcomed. For me the XF community, with everyone's creativity and dedication, was just as inspiring and motivating for fanfic as the show.
What is your relationship like now to X-Files fandom?
I think of it like school. I learned a lot, I graduated, and now it's primarily occupied by a new generation. Were you involved with any fandoms after the X-Files? If so, what was it like compared to X-Files?
If XF was like university, then afterward was like graduate school. Sophiahelix and I started a multi-fandom mailing list called Glass Onion and met lots of folks. Livejournal/Dreamwidth became big public platforms which enabled tons of cross-fandom links, recs, and discussions – and sometimes clashes. Although it wasn't as intensely formative for me as XF, I realized that fandom in general has had an undeniable impact on my life. [Lilydale note: That’s a link to a wonderful little essay Jintian wrote about fandom.]
Who are some of your favorite fictional characters? Why? I love the sneak attackers, the ones who seem unassuming or perhaps disadvantaged, but they're actually out here killing the game. Dana Scully was a small-statured person who had to move the driver's seat to reach the pedals – like me – but she was an FBI agent, medical doctor, and forensic pathologist – unlike me, but goals. Other similar faves are Toph Beifong (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Mat Cauthon (Wheel of Time), and Jang Geurae (Misaeng). Do you ever still watch The X-Files or think about Mulder and Scully? Several years ago I had the notion to introduce my husband to the show, and it was totally enjoyable and could stand up with shows airing today. (Husband queried: "What is the deal with Mulder? He should have been fired 19 times already." We were in Season 2.)
Do you ever still read X-Files fic? Fic in another fandom?
No XF lately, but I'll check AO3 whenever I encounter a shiny new ship. Reading fic is my only fannish activity these days, so I stay happy and conflict-free.
Do you have any favorite X-Files fanfic stories or authors? It's been ages, but today I'm thinking of torch, Jane St Clair, Jordan, RivkaT, MustangSally, Khyber, nevdull, Justin Glasser, Vehemently, Nascent... On any other day it could be a whole different list. The fandom was so rich and deep in writers. What is your favorite of your own fics, X-Files and/or otherwise?
My XF stuff was kind of all over the place. I experimented a lot, with mixed results. I guess I'm glad about some of the subject matter I tackled, like Scully's trauma and post-abduction state of mind (and body) in Loss of Yesterday, and the thematically similar Longer Gone, which explored Samantha.
What's the story behind your pen name? Jintian means "today" in Mandarin Chinese. I was feeling existential. 🤷‍♀️
Do your friends and family know about your fic and, if so, what have been their reactions? I've only ever told an ex and my husband. They were allowed to read one story – which I chose. They thought it was cool, I guess. I can't remember clearly because I had my fingers stuck in my ears going "lalalala!"
However, I can always count on my husband to say something savagely funny about fandom mess, so I just try to curate his exposure. For instance, he could recap the Msscribe saga but couldn't tell you any of my usernames. He's also met a number of my fannish friends so he knows how we get, hah.
Is there a place online (tumblr, twitter, AO3, etc.) where people can find you and/or your stories now?
AO3 Is there anything else you'd like to share with fans of X-Files fic?
As I'm writing this, the world is grappling with COVID-19. I'm wishing everyone safety and health, both physical and mental. If fandom provides a positive escape, embrace and enjoy it!

Dramas for days when you’re sick of cheesy romance
(Suggested list by @dramasthetic)
Disclaimer: If any of these had romance in it then sorry I probably forgot it and it didn’t stand out much (some had a bit but nothing important to the plot).
Avengers Social Club (Ra Miran, Lee Yowon, Myung Sebin)
Tumblr media
I love this show so much it’s so brilliant and the main cast had such a unique friendship. I could watch another season of this, although it would have to have the same main cast because they brought the script to life and I couldn’t imagine it any other way. There was this carpenter guy but he was kinda irrelevant so I’ll just say this had zero romance. Anyways, this is a solid drama and if you breathe air then you should watch this.
Juhan Shuttai! (Kuroki Haru, Odagiri Joe, Sakaguchi Kentaro)
Tumblr media
Although I only watched this recently it shot straight into my top 10 jdramas. At first I thought they were going to put Kurosawa -the cutest lead ever- and Iokibe together and have Koizumi as the second lead (which would have been terrible let's be clear) but I was pleasantly surprised that they ditched the romance altogether which made it a hilarious yet heartwarming story to watch. It has a similar feel to Jimi ni Sugoi except without the romance and 90% more comedy. This is such a rare find since it’s not dark (for the most part) nor is it a thriller so those who don’t like thrillers this one is for you.
Solomon's Perjury (Kim Hyunsoo, Jang Dongyoon, Seo Jihoon)
Tumblr media
It’s safe to say that this is one of my favourite school dramas. Thinking about it now there probably was some romance in it since kdrama writers love shoving romance into just about everything, but that’s the least important part of the story honestly. Whilst there are a lot of dramas about bullying in schools, the trial part was particularly interesting. I don’t want to spoil anything but it gets pretty dark and there’s a lot of talk about the school system and suicide (it gets pretty heartbreaking so think it through before you watch it).
Missing Noir M (Kim Kangwoo, Jo Boah, Park Heesoon)
Tumblr media
If you follow this blog then you’re probably sick of me mentioning this drama but please it’s so damn good just watch it ok. The plot is quite unique in comparison to most crime thrillers since it focuses on missing people, but it’s also about violent crimes. If the synopsis or KKW’s beautiful face isn’t enough, Kang Haneul makes a short yet impactful appearance and Jo Boah is a cool hacker and isn’t paired off with some creepy guy *slowly turns to the camera with a grin*.
Children of Nobody (Kim Sunah, Lee Yikyung, Cha Hakyeon)
Tumblr media
I can summarise this one quickly: THIS IS SO DARK AND TRAGIC THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO SPACE FOR ANY LOVEY DOVEY BUSINESS.
Misaeng (Im Siwan, Lee Sungmin, Kang Sora)
Tumblr media
This was my first Siwan drama and I was surprised by how amazing he was in this role. There’s this really mellow feel to this one, but at times I felt like it ripped my heart out seeing Geurae and Youngyi being belittled. A downside would be that there was only like 3 female characters, I wasn’t going to mention it but this cast is INCREDIBLE (Haneul, Byun Yohan, Kim Daemyung, Tae Inho, Oh Minsuk AND Kim Heewon? Absolutely legendary). There is no other office drama that could beat this one. (I know I was talking about Siwan but Sukyool is my boy)
Black Dog (Seo Hyunjin, Ra Miran, Hajoon)
Tumblr media
Currently watching this gem and the finale is next week so if they decide to shoehorn in a romance then I will choke someone, but I highly doubt it since it would be really random and there is A LOT to clear up in 2 episodes. This isn’t too dark nor is it cheesy which is why it fills my heart with such joy. Ji Haewon please come back it’s lonely out here without you.

i love that it looks like Seok-Yul is losing his mind and Jang Geu-Rae, Baek-gi and Ahn Young-yi are just watching normally but in all reality, those three are going insane on the inside in much more intense and real™ ways

misaeng (2014) / ★★★✩✩
i didn’t realize this drama was out in 2014 if it weren’t for the phones.
so, yes, one of my favorite categories: slice of life. it was all... good. except one thing: i get sleepy a lot watching this. god maybe i am Just tired??? this happened too during the other drama i was watching. well, to add some other reason, there are too many business terms that i don’t understand. so, my business/trading major friends, this could suit your palate.
the storyline, just like how most slice of life dramas, are... warm. and complicated in a simplified way. (like, you know, it is complicated, but it’s nothing compared to yours and my problems)
i decided to watch because of kim dae myung actually, but got kind of hooked on kang sora and im si wan. the man pulled his character so well in this drama. jang geurae is this, annoyingly (i could think of a korean adj but i don’t know what the equivalent in eng: 답답하게 ) quiet kid that you just want to shake so he could wake up and get some senses knocked.
and kang haneul, God, have i ever told you how he has this looks of a crush you know you always have but it’s so subtle that you will never, not even in another lifetime, confess to him? he still has that look in this drama. in addition to being a closed asshole, his character was fine.
byun yo han, oof, he was one of my favorites in mr. sunshine (i literally like everyone in mr. sunshine, who are we kidding?). i get the sense why he was casted in mr. sunshine, it was probably because of his role here. he’s witty, bright, smart, knows how to speak, knows how to position himself. his character could be ridiculously annoying at times but it’s still funny that i just can’t hate him.
kang sora, though. i Love that this drama blatantly shows how women are treated in a workplace dominated by men. God. there’s this scene where the superior says, and i quote (not word-to-word), “this is why women shouldn’t be given this job”. do you know how often that word got out of ugly men mouths???? way too often. why do men say women are incapable because we are women???? i mean i’ve never really thought men are stupid because they are men??????? you’re not stupid because you’re a man, you’re stupid because maybe you knocked your head while you were getting born (i just angry-typed this paragraph).
all in all, though i don’t enjoy this as much as i had expected, i still think this is a better slice of life business topic drama than start up.
