Dear Kenneth,
I know na there is always a reason. You know I love understanding you, natutuwa ako kapag nag oopen ka saken. Which is funny sa side ko kasi I should be used to it kasi lagi ko namang nadidinig yon kina Mama, siguro iba lang yung levels nv impact sayo at kina Mama. Sayo kasi I never taught na ganon ka kasaket mag salita, pero naiintindihan ko naman. I'm always scared of losing you. Feel ko kasi ikaw nalang yung kakampi ko. Kahit alam ko na nasasaktan mo ako, you can still make me happy. Pero yon, right after sabihin yon saken ni Papa, I find strength at ikaw yon. Sobrang mahal kita. Ni minsan diko naisep na magiging tayo. Na ikaw ang first ko. Kahit anong pagtataboy mo saken never ako susuko. Mahal na mahal kita and I always want you to be happy even when I'm gone and I know you can, naiinget lang ako kasi kaya mo ko bitawan agad HAHAHAHA.
Thank you, sa lahat. Mahal na mahal kita, at kung di kana masaya saken I will do what is needed. Tell them how much I wanted them to be proud of me.
I know na magiging okay ka din once I'm gone. Please, wag mo na ako isipin if someone could make you happy aside from me. I'm after your happiness and your happiness is important to me.
Iloveyou dong.
I will always be your jollibee.
(Sana someday may enough courage na ako to send this to you)
Mahal na mahal kita. Delete mo nalang convo naten ah. Tuktok talaga. HAHAHAHA
Iloveyou, my captain.
I am already proud of you but I know you can make me/us proud even more.
BAAAAABEEEEEEEEEEE. Could you listen to this song and remember where we started. Thank you for loving me and my family.
Please don't blame nor hate yourself. It's not your fault babe.
Iloveyou.
Love, siwel.

New painting: "Aberdeen II" - Acrylic on Masonite (7" x 7") This tiny painting is for the "Melted City 4" show curated by Jordin Isip. The original show was in the Philippines, but Jordin is bringing it to RISD. My first painting sold, so I created another one for this iteration of the show.

Nicole Rifkin, artist
Tumblr media
Artist Nicole Rifkin shares with LFF about how she came to creative work, her current project exploring religious imagery in satire of millennials, the start of the arts right now, feminism and much more...
Where are you from? How did you get into creative work and what is your impetus for creating? I'm a Canadian American so I'm from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada and also Gainesville, Florida. Which, if you're wondering, was and is a really weird combination of places to grow up in. I got into creative work after quitting sports in high school (I am 6'4). I genuinely sucked until I went to Pratt and got my degree in Communications Design. After I graduated I really lucked out and did my first job for the New Yorker and I've been freelancing ever since. I'm currently getting my MFA in illustration so I suppose my impetus to create works stems from school deadlines; however I work independently because I get really anxious when I'm not actively producing things, for my thesis or otherwise. That made me sound really boring but I just really like making things! Tell me about your current/upcoming show/exhibit/book/project and why it’s important to you. What do you hope people get out of your work? I'm currently working on my thesis which is exploring religious imagery in satire of millennials. Apathy is a constant with some people, and I wanted to make a body of work that discusses the kind faith of people who do nothing but wholly believe in themselves (the lack of voter turn out and the results of the election really impacted the content of my thesis). But I'm focusing on getting weirder and understanding the design of the illustrations. I'm also continuing my comic series Alive & Well, which is a story about a young woman who is hallucinating an ex and seeking closure. It's heavily influenced by the lyrics of the Ergs. Also I'm still freelancing, this past week I completed four jobs so I'm looking forward to all future naps.
I hope, like with everything I do, that my work makes someone feel something. Unfortunately it's usually 'bummed,' but that's something! But I think that independent work should pursue that at the very least, and hopefully let an audience experience a different perspective on life.
Tumblr media
Does collaboration play a role in your work—whether with your community, artists or others? How so and how does this impact your work? That's a tricky question. I'm really invested in the ideal of a creative community and I love collaborating with people specifically on zines. But I really enjoy working with people who have a completely different process or perspective on a topic. I just don't have a lot of time right now so I get very optimistic about what I can commit to a project. I think what influences me a lot is the music community in New York/ New Jersey. There is so much talent and so many great bands but the best part is no one asks me what I'm working on because it's not a band! Considering the political climate, how do you think the temperature is for the arts right now, what/how do you hope it may change or make a difference? How I feel about the climate right now is that the rumbling of dissatisfaction is getting louder. Over the past few years there has been a rise of discussions about representation in the arts (of gender, identity, race, etc) more so than ever before. It's amazing and a necessary thing that has to be considered seriously and really has to change. The society of Illustrators has done a phenomenal job of having panel discussions and podcasts about different aspects of this. Also websites like Women Who Draw are popping up and are incredibly important.
There is an issue in the arts of who does work, why, and for whom. And now, how do we communicate what is happening without sacrificing our own morals. For instance, I could not imaging drawing a lovely portrait of Mike Pence being chill at a broadway show. And in the past my only real veto for work has been explicit violence. And now I have to consider work more than I did before. Now, with the election having passed, there is anger and depression. I'm not going to say the usual thing which is: 'the arts are going to be great because we have a sentient tangerine peel in office.' I will say that I hope that people will make work that addresses how they feel about what is happening. Not in spite of fear but in response to that fear to stand up for what they believe in. Artist Wanda Ewing, who curated and titled the original LFF exhibit, examined the perspective of femininity and race in her work, and spoke positively of feminism, saying “yes, it is still relevant” to have exhibits and forums for women in art; does feminism play a role in your work? As a feminist I'd definitely like to think that my world view impacts my work. As an illustrator, I take the work that is given to me and I try to interpret it with a feminist school of thought. However, I cannot project my own opinions on the words of others, my job is to interpret and communicate ideas for an audience. There have been cases where I have refused a vein of art direction because it conflicted with my opinions on gender identity and sexuality in an adverse way and I believe that there is a visual solution to every problem that can circumvent stereotype and anti-feminist sentiments. There are so many people: women, gender non conforming, lgbtq+, people of colour, people of different belief systems who do not get adequate representation in illustrations (not even talking about the artists who are making work), so I thoroughly believe that there needs to be a reflection of the world within a piece of art and a sense of equality within the environment that one may create while doing a job or making a body of work. When given the opportunity, I try to do that (to the minute degree that my work might actually get seen). Ewing’s advice to aspiring artists was “you’ve got to develop the skill of when to listen and when not to;” and “Leave. Gain perspective.”  What is your favorite advice you have received or given? My favourite advice I have ever been given was from Jordin Isip when I was studying at Pratt: "Don't make work that you think people want you to make, make the work that you want to make and you will be fine"
~ Les Femmes Folles is a volunteer organization founded in 2011 with the mission to support and promote women in all forms, styles and levels of art from around the world with the online journal, print annuals, exhibitions and events; originally inspired by artist Wanda Ewing and her curated exhibit by the name Les Femmes Folles (Wild Women). LFF was created and is curated by Sally Deskins.  LFF Books is a micro-feminist press that publishes 1-2 books per year by the creators of Les Femmes Folles including the award-winning Intimates & Fools (Laura Madeline Wiseman, 2014) and The Hunger of the Cheeky Sisters: Ten Tales (Laura Madeline Wiseman/Lauren Rinaldi, 2015). Other titles include Les Femmes Folles: The Women 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 available on blurb.com, including art, poetry and interview excerpts from women artists. Songs That I Love
So I made a list ng mga favorites ko simula pa dati, at wala talagang coherence 'to pagdating sa genre tsaka era. As in sabog na playlist 'to. Haha
1. Here's To Never Growing Up - Avril Lavigne (it just popped up in my mind while writing this)
2. Empire State of Mind - Alicia Keys (new yoooork, someday)
3. If - Bread (i'm an old soul, i know)
4. Maybe This Time - Sarah Geronimo (popster, charot)
5. Invisible - Hunter Hayes (the lyrics and the tune!!! goodness)
6. Sound of Silence - Disturbed (this version's super bass, learned it from The Voice Teens)
7. How Far I'll Go - Auli'l Cravalho (who doesn't love it)
8. Surprise Surprise - Celine Dion (I already said in a previous blog that it's my most fave song)
9. No Air - Jordin Sparks ft. (the melody is bomb)
10. I Still Believe (Miss Saigon) - Lea Salonga (most adorbs broadway song together w/ Defying Gravity)
11. The A Team - Ed Sheeran (idk this song has so much impact to me)
12. Decode - Paramore
13. Still Into You - Paramore
14. The Only Exception - Paramore (tried choosing only 1 from the band, cannot)
15. Making Love Out Of Nothing At All (i know the lyrics, try me)
16. If I Ain't Got You - Alicia Keys (whenever I was asked what my fave song is, this is what I tell them. It's a sort of a Christian song for me)
17. Immortality - Celine Dion fr. Bee Gees (the collab is too great i just can't take it off my list)
18. Everything Has Changed - Taylor Swift ft. Ed Sheeran (adorable ugh)
19. My Immortal - Evanescence (sarap kantahin kahit nakakadrain ng boses)
20. Made In The USA - Demi Lovato (wala lang ganda lang)
21. Liability - Lorde
22. Royals - Lorde
23. Can't Take That Away - Mariah Carey
