Sometimes it's not burying your gays if there are lots of other gay characters and sometimes even when the whole cast is queer it's still burying your gays huh
he deserved a chance to thrive, he deserved to recognize the love around him and accept it, he deserved the opportunity to choose to live.
Feeling incredibly disappointed. Death was the easy, expected narrative choice, not the brave one--and for a show that built itself on making brave narrative choices, this feels incredibly unsatisfying. I think if we'd gotten a full 10 episode season it might have landed, but... not like this. Anyway fuck HBO for not giving this show the funding, the airtime, and the support it deserved.

Alright, I've collected my thoughts on Izzy's death a bit.
So, in my opinion, there are two main reasons why it was so jarring:
The first one is that it being crammed between Stede and Ed's reunion and the innkeepers stuff does make it look like the authors just wanted him out of the way. Which is further enhanced by the whole "they are a love triangle" talk from David. The problem is, Izzy is not the evil bad yaoi manga style homewrecker who is only there to be an obstacle for the main characters to overcome/jealousy bait. Not after all the development he went through in this season.
The second one is that they somehow made the guy's whole death scene about Ed. Sure, for the season one Izzy that would be expected, he was in fact absolutely obsessed by his role as Blackbeard's guard dog/enabler, but here we are talking abou Izzy who sung a song for the crew to cheer them up after being tortured, Izzy who threw a whole piracy crash course for Stede Fucking Bonnet and cheered him up when he was doing a good job, Izzy who was willing to share advice on overcoming trauma with Lucius (and gave him a lovely whittled toy shark), Izzy who a couple of scenes back confronted the nose guy because he felt almost parental responsibility for the safety of the crew. But then suddenly, in one of the most important moments of his life, all we're talking about is how the crew is Ed's family who love him (do they really?), and Izzy is just his dying pet. After the whole season of development into being his own person and building meaningful connections with others.
I don't think he should have been immortal just for the fact that he's a queer character, but the way they handled his death was pretty fucking tasteless. It was kinda shit. Yeah. It fucking sucked. Hard.

Izzy would say, "I love you" through gritted teeth whilst being unable to make eye contact. Then, once the words are out in the open and unable to be taken back, he would wait for your inevitable laugh or sound of disgust. Why wouldn't you? Who could love someone so completely wretched as him? But against all of the poisoned things he believes to be true, you would do the exact opposite. There would be no laugh. No venomous sneer. Instead, he'd be met with you encircling him in your arms. Though he tenses initially, still expecting some kind of negative reaction, your hug would continue to be...well, just a hug. And with that, the pirate would melt into your hold and perhaps, melt even further when you whispered back those three little words.
(I'm considering writing a multi-chapter Izzy fic...)

I wish I could say I found this, but someone else posted it, and before I could reblog it, tumblr washed it away.
all props to the OP!

every few days i think about izzy's character arc, and every time i just wanna scream long and hard in frustration
his death was so unsatisfying and so painful and i will remain feral, unhinged and petty about it

Cannot decide which stizzy team-up option that is ricocheting around in my brain is better:
-stede finds a pitiful & sopping wet (emotionally and/or physically) Izzy at Jackie's where he gives the whole 'boohoo Ed doesn't want me & I'm no longer a useful first mate' speech. Stede is annoyed but takes him in anyway bc he's the best asset they've got for finding Ed. They slowly warm up to each other thru training montage and talking it through
-the classic 'I think I broke edward and it's YOUR job to fix it' where Izzy goes off voluntarily to find Stede (if there's a message in a bottle in the first act 👀👀) and they team up that way. Less sopping wetness but more reason to not despise each other 🤔

OFMD fandom, say it with me please:
Removing a body part from someone as ‘punishment’ is Not A Good Thing To Do. It is ableist to insist otherwise. Disability, and yes, a missing appendage is a disability, is not a punishment and it is not something people ‘deserve’ for ‘bad behavior’.
Forced autocannibalism is also Not A Good Thing To Do. Genuinely cannot believe this has to be said.
Someone you trust coming into your room while you sleep, cutting off one of your body parts, and forcing you to eat said body part is, in fact, a traumatic event. I promise you the narrative is not on your side if you think otherwise.

I can't figure out if I'm more confused that Izzy's arc culminated in his apology to Ed (and death) or that Ed's arc culminated in Izzy's burial because like, we established earlier in the season that sorry doesn't rebuild an abdominal wall. And death doesn't fix the harm either. And the other choice is making soup.
So then, why did Izzy have to do sorry and death to fix things with Ed, why was that portrayed as healing? (this is why I would argue it is not.)
And then Ed did a death in 2x03, then a few sorries but again, that doesn't rebuild an abdominal wall (or a leg and some toes), and he didn't even get to make soup?? did he even talk to anyone but Stede at the party or during the fuckery? was Ed's "soup" the little breakfast? is Stede the only person Ed has now, is that his whole community? but that was before everything went to pieces?

listen. do i know that a gunslinging pirate would realistically be very impractical because most pistols of the era took at least 20 seconds to reload??? yes. am i still obsessed with the idea of a gunslinging pirate and determined to incorporate one into my ofmd prequel??? absolutely. physics be damned, they can just carry A Lot of Guns

Since Izzy is paralleled to Mary in "Uncomfortable in a Married State", he deserves to get his own Doug.

OFMD S2 FINALE SPOILERS
.
.
.
Can I just say, it was cruel of the ofmd writers to make finding yourself and learning to love yourself central themes in this season, only to not let Izzy do either and be the only character to die in the finale. I mean seriously, what the hell?
