Shingyoku goofy aah yin yang koi fish dragon
1st official drawing for 2024!!!!! 🐉☯️
Tumblr media
Sillies as a warmup. I have a lot planned to make. Technically where not yet in dragon year but. Warm up again :) Shingyoku year.... ill be making 10000000 drawings of them :)
The Reimu design on bottom left is that one never used again design you see a bit in HRtP. I like it! I plan on drawing it non chibi style. I also use it in my take of a story for HRtP.
Other than that Shingyoku!!! Headcanon much. I like to think theyre some sort of dragon god. My themes for them are (ofc) the yin yang and kuzuryu/nine headed dragon + a bit of koi fish. Its too long and I already mentionned its too long in previous posts whoops. They have 3 in game forms but I give them 6 more. Heres a bit of a dragon form, and their headcanon "true" form. This is not a fusion/combined form but their real self. Its a shapeshifter so theyre all the same person including comically big yin yang orb one :)
Tumblr media
For those randomly coming across this post, heres the one showcasing non chibi style design of this "true" form:
Ok byyyyye I lov e shingyoku the touhou project highly responsive to prayers :)

tell me about kanako pls
WHY BUT OF COURSE (sorry this took so long ^^;)
kanako is one of my absolute favourites in the cast because shes the character that to me brought what i like in the franchise into focus in full form. while there were hints of political satire in touhou starting around the tail end of the ninth game and its following spinoff literature, it wasnt until i reached the tenth mainline title that i really fell in love with touhou, and the driving force of that change was yasaka kanako.
Tumblr media
kanako is such a fun character to me because her very concept is so compelling, and its delivered in an extremely satisfying way. she is a god who treats religion like running a business, and is pragmatic to every end. this is both one of her greatest strengths and a source of literally all of her issues. everything about kanako is a vignette that illustrates how her capitalistic drive for innovation creates the troubles she faces in advancing further toward her goals, and her misunderstanding of spirituality as an economic problem to be solved for efficiency creates roadblocks for her lifestyle that she is entirely, confidently blind to.
once again i have to stress, this does seem to work for her in some aspects! when she took over leadership of the suwa shrine, she did so by being calculating and planning ahead against anything suwako had up her arsenal, then sweetened the deal for both of them by offering a compromise (sharing residence as the local kami, with suwako acting as the native god and kanako being the face of the shrine who gets the worship). she made a judgment call by choosing to move the shrine from the outside world to gensoukyou when she realized that it was no longer feasible for her and her company to rely on worship from outside world humans. all of these things are demonstrably good business decisions made in the name of keeping her livelihood as a shinrei stable. however, after she moves into gensoukyou with her wife and daughter, she begins to get, well, greedy isnt the right word, but...
capitalism is a force that has to inherently grow, as that is what its entire existence encourages. so what happens when you introduce an individual whose skill is in her capitalistic business prowess into a society that has no knowledge of it? you get kanakos assumption that she needs to introduce it into their culture. she could always have more people worship her. so she tries outperforming her competing... shrines. what would make me a better god? what would prove im more fit to lead gensoukyous humans? these things start running through kanakos head very very quickly. and it isnt out of self-importance either (unlike certain other religious leaders in gensoukyou cough cough miko), she just sees it as the natural extension of running her shrine.
but of course, when you introduce capitalism into a culture, you Introduce Capitalism Into A Culture. in kanakos pursuit of refining her worshipers into customers, she makes it clear to others in her field that there is even a race for power at all. her insistence to assert her presence in gensoukyou through gaining human worshipers via the hakurei shrine alerts reimu to her as someone who is influencing the status quo in the first place. her arms race for nuclear fusion (of which she is the only participant) is directly responsible for the introduction of the myouren temple to gensoukyou, which in turn leads to the introduction of miko and her band of taoists. not to mention her many, many unnecessary entrepreneurial ideas she comes up with in the print works (although they seem much more respectable when shown side-by-side with the anarcho-capitalist schemes of the kappa). these things never would have threatened her position had she not attempted to expand her reach.
in one sense, this is a huge character flaw for her. however, the other side of this coin means that no matter the conflicts kanako brings about for herself, she always views it as inevitable; something that is bound to happen over time regardless, and just another stepping stone on her business ventures. this aspect of her is what i find most interesting—her complete inability to see the big picture in her endless strive for religious success is somehow her most reliable asset. its what makes kanako wonderful to me, and endlessly engaging even after almost two decades since her introduction.

Hey! I´m back and I made a little sketch of my interpretation of Shingyoku´s female form from Touhou HRTP, I was inspired by @aragonlediagon when making this sketch of them, I like the idea that Shingyoku´s female form is more chinese just like their male form as I like the headcanon that Shingyoku is a chinese immigrant that came to Japan hundreds of years ago during Ming/Sengoku period during which they had a child before becoming the Hakurei kami and being the spirit that lives in the Hakurei shrine!
I gave them a Ming-dynasty style ruqun with a mamianqun skirt and a shirt jacket, they also have chinese-style shoes as well. They have their hair in a bun with small short pronged-horns on the side of their head with small cute earrings.
I can imagine grandma Shingyoku being the typical chinese grandmother to Reimu, affectionate and kind with a dash of overfeeding her descendant.

Sagume Kishin:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sagume Kishin is based on Ame-no-sagume, the goddess thought to be the mother of all amanojaku. Though, she's also a high-ranking figure among the Lunarians, being another of the Lunar Sages as Eirin was.
Oh, and she's a goddess specifically. Touhou Project usually uses the word "kami", which is gender-neutral, but the English word "goddess" is used for her.
She has the superpower to "reverse a situation with her words". It might be best explained this way: have you ever watched or read a work of fiction where someone says "what's the worst that could happen?" only for the absolute worst possible thing to happen? That's her ability. Her saying that something is the case will cause it to not be the case. It might be the natural extent of how amanojaku lie so much: she literally can't tell the truth because anything she says will soon become a lie. This ability is an incredibly powerful one, with no apparent weaknesses. She could hypothetically bend all of reality to her whim if she said the right things.
Sagume Kishin is the true mastermind behind the events of Touhou 14.5: Urban Legend in Limbo. She caused the Urban Legend incident and manipulated Sumireko into spreading it. She successfully "poisoned the tree at the roots", permanently altering Gensokyo into a land where anything can happen if people believe it will. She did this to allow the Lunarians to break into Gensokyo and take the place over.
This was not an act of greed, but instead one of desperation: the Lunarians had been forced out of their Lunar Capital by an invading army straight out of Hell itself, led by a long-time enemy of the Lunarians.
In the meantime, Sagume asked Doremy to create a copy of the Lunar Capital in the Dream World for everyone to hide in, while she stayed behind in the real Lunar Capital to keep watch. Indeed, Sagume was so reluctant to follow through on this invasion plan, that when the protagonist faced her, she announced that the Lunarian invasion was inevitable and any resistance against it was powerless, activating her ability and solving the crisis shortly after.
She was fought as Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom's 4th boss, where she tested the strength of the protagonist to see if they could defeat the Hell army. She explained the Lunarians' predicament, and pointed them towards the game's true main villain. While most bosses in the series at least have their clothes torn a tiny bit and a few bruises after their defeat, Sagume emerged completely unscathed by the boss fight. Apparently this was because the dialogue before the fight is very short, while the dialogue afterwards is very long, so you wouldn't be able to get a good look at her.
After the incident was resolved, Sagume made repeated visits to Gensokyo in secret, where she visited Eintei to talk with Eirin about stuff.
She made another major appearance at the end of The Grimoire of Usami. As it turns out, Yukari Yakumo set up a failsafe for Shinmyoumaru's little violent party. While Yukari did approve of it, as "you can't really have fun without the smell of death around", she also realized Reimu and her incident resolving friends couldn't keep the youkai at bay forever. So, she pulled a favor in from Eirin to contact Sagume and invite her over to the festival. Sagume didn't show up until the very end, after almost everyone had gone.
Sagume knew immediately why she was sent there, and announced to the audience and all participants that they could go wild as long as they liked! Sure enough, Shinmyoumaru entered the stage as the "final boss" immediately afterwards, at which point Reimu confronted her and showed her the error of her ways. Oh, and Seija Kijin was so excited by her great-great-great-grandma showing up that she promised that she would be in it for the long haul with Shinmyoumaru, since clearly the Inchling knew how to have a good time.
Still, who exactly was Sagume was unknown to the audience, who would probably snap if they knew a Lunarian could so easily enter Gensokyo, or that she was responsible for the near annihilation of Gensokyo. Sumireko in particular thought Sagume was another Chunnibyou teenager like herself, based on her outfit and mannerisms.
Speaking of, you'd think Yukari Yakumo would be mad at Sagume for almost laying waste to all of Gensokyo, since she founded it and all, but it seems Yukari is actually more impressed than anything. She thinks Sagume's superpower is an awfully convenient one, and thanks her for allowing Gensokyo to evolve in such a way.
Sagume's personality appears to be cold and aloof. Due to her abilities, she's usually borderline mute, being incredibly careful when and how she speaks. While it seems she was against the Lunarian invasion of Gensokyo enough to plan a backdoor out of it, she also appears to have the typical Lunarian feeling of superiority over the "impure Earthlings". Reisen Udongein Inaba still respects her enough to follow her orders without question, despite claiming to be an Earth rabbit now. Eirin and Kaguya also appear to be on good terms with Sagume, enough to scare people into thinking they plan on betraying Gensokyo to the Lunarians.
Either way, we've never actually seen a "normal" Lunarian up to this point, unlike, for example, how pretty much every kappa is a Nitori clone. They'll probably continue to be faceless bureaucrats well into the future.
In combat, Sagume doesn't do much on her own. She mostly summons these Yin-Yang orb enemies to shoot danmaku for her. Apparently they're Impurity Detection Drones. She only attacks directly in her last spellcard: "One-Winged White Heron" where she creates lots of yellow beams of light from her single wing.
Speaking of, the one wing on her back is meant to reveal she's actually only half-Lunarian. She's half heavenly god, half earthly god.

Near limitless power? Isn't it just a ball? I mean, at best it could be a trophy. Is that why you want it?! As a symbol for defeating Reimu or something.
Tumblr media
"..."just a ball"?" Uh oh.
Tumblr media
"JUST A BALL!?" Mima shrieks, half-laughing, "THE HAKUREI SHRINE'S GO-SHINTAI, JUST A BALL?!" She takes a deep breath through her nose, holding it for a few seconds, before letting it out rather sharply.
Tumblr media
"Listen carefully, and listen well. Collectively, the Hakurei Yin-Yang Orbs are a set of very powerful onmyoudou tools that can take in their wielder's energy, positive or negative, build it up, and then release it all at once. All of the smaller orbs are controlled by the master orb, the main one that is currently housed in the shrine's hondan. The master orb is a go-shintai-- and thus the smaller ones as well, technically-- which is basically the vessel that houses a kami or a portion of a kami at a shrine."
Tumblr media
"In other words, you pretty much called the Hakurei Shrine's primary god "just a ball". It's an insult along the lines of going up to Moriya Suwako and calling her "just some land", which is something you absolutely shouldn't do if you don't want her to curse you horribly. So, as one of this shrine's other deities (Shinto shrines tend to have a few), in this case, its tatarigami or curse god, I should curse you for your remarks... but it's likely you simply made them out of ignorance. So I'll let you leave, curse-free, just this once."

I've been considering getting into touhou cuz I mean I love the music I've been listening to it since I got on the internet so I'd love to check it out....how do I start? :O
OMG OKAY so like. i honestly.
the way i got into touhou was somehow, i ended up on the wiki , and then stayed on there until i went to bed in a trance @_@ LOL!!! (though, i like to bitch about the wiki...!!! its a good source for official material and translations, but as far as the way they describe characters and stuff...!! annoys me!)
touhou is 90% made by one guy, and the same guy, ZUN! other side games and manga are collaborated with other artists or people, but everything else is all him pretty much.
the thing about touhou is, theres a lot of official material, but theres also a lot of fan content so it may be easy to get confused. basically..
the main touhou games are the bullet hell games. vertical, shoot em up dodging craziness!! each game has the same base mechanics, but there are differences in gimmicks for each one (that are elaborated on within the games instructions, of course...)
the side touhou games sometimes are bullet games, but also can include fighting games too! i do not pay attention to these ones quite honestly. they can introduce new characters sometimes, but overall i just read the translation of the story if i want to learn more. these games i would say are not really important
finally, theres official manga too! like the side games, these also can introduce new characters. id say that these are pretty good if someone prefers to read manga. i know some of the manga are more plot heavy (i havent read all of them) but others could definitely be standalone, as things are more or less explained in the writing.
"okay but, what about the games?"
in the games, theres usually at least 2 playable characters to choose from. they have differing shots depending on who you pick, so play around and see who is best for you!
THE GAMES HAVE EASY MODE!!!! if you feel like normal mode is too hard, just play on easy!! it counts as beating the game all the same!!
Z is to shoot, arrow keys are to move, and X is to use your special! pressing shift goes into focus mode! you can see your hitbox and have a more focused and powerful shot, and you move slower!
also, once you lose all your lives you dont have to give up!! you can use "continues," which let you respawn again with the default number of lives so you can keep going. the amount of continues depends on the game, theres no shame in using them AT ALL especially when you are starting!!
zun's own advice is, "just play the most recent one" and i would say this isnt bad advice at all! however the 3 most recent touhou games (16, 17, and 18) all have gimmicks that may be a little crazy to start with for the first time! otherwise i REALLY love touhou 18 and touhou 17 right now!
this is generally why people seem to recommend touhou 7, Perfect Cherry Blossom, for new players, and that's what i started with too! its an old game, so there are some slight layout differences, but other than that its a pretty basic game! you can increase your amount of lives from the options menu, the gimmick of the game is almost unnoticible unless you know what it is beforehand, and isnt all that bad to play!
it does have difficulty spikes, but its more of a practice makes perfect thing. some games are harder than others. do your best!!!!
"but what is the plot?"
the plot changes on the game! however the basic premise is that there is Something going down, and Reimu (our main character) and her friends go out to solve this incident! the characters you fight along the way range from minimally involved to the masterminds of the whole plot! there are so many characters in touhou, theres one for everybody! and yes, it is 97% girlies #feminism
most of the characters are youkai, and several are kami (translated as gods), and anything in between. theres a lot of themes of spiritualism that inherently comes with such characters.
i should probably mention: there is NO official english translation for touhou games! with the sole exception of 17.5, everything is fan translated! the touhou translations are done with "thcrap" which then, when the program is run, will allow you to select which translation and which games to run!
"but now, how about playing the games!"
you can buy the games on steam, officially.
as for myself i have the games in..not this way. teehee.
and......YEAH THE MUSIC IS FUCKING AWESOME HERE ARE SOME OF MY FAVORITE THEMES
AS FOR EVERYTHING ELSE HONESTLY JUST AAAAAAASK IM SILLY IM GOING TO LIVE FOREVER!!!!!!!!

Probably best that Satoti doesn’t seem able to read the minds of kami that aren’t, like, walking around. Otherwise meeting Reimu for the first time probably would have given her an immediate migraine.
And it’s anyone’s guess what Yatagarasu is thinking.

I’m gonna share the weird 2hu dream I had
You know how I pictured the idea of Ran taking care of lil Reimu? Somehow my brain meshed those hc’s with the tale of Kuzunoha.
You know that tale right? Supposedly the origin of Abe no Senmei. Young Senmei caught a quick glimpse of a fox tail when looking at his mother, turned out that his mom was a kitsune all along, a kami of a shrine to be precise he was able to see through his mother’s illusions thanks to the supernatural powers he inherited for her. She had no choice but to leave the household but not without giving her son one last gift.
Just change senmei’s name to Reimu and there you have it asdhfaksfhj

Shingyoku sillies dump post (second round)
A post of aimlessly drawn Shingyoku sillies, each is too silly to deserve their own post and ive drawn so many lately would take too long to make standalone posts. Enjoy :)
⚠️Warning: this contains Shingyoku x Konngara content (sfw obv). Konn is also depicted as a man, so if that sounds wrong to you I kindly invite you to ignore and leave, thank you :)
Tumblr media
Onmyoji mitosis Futo and Shingyoku spiritual daughter and father bounding time theyre both very polite fossils :)

My take of a story for HRtP summarized in one pic. Shingyoku wheelchair crumpled grandpa the Hakurei shrine is a retirement home Reimu is so done

Shingyoku's true form and egg lore
This one would take me so long to explain. Very basically: I headcanon Shingyoku as a kami with shapeshifting as one of their main abilities. On top of their 3 in game forms, I imagined 6 other forms for them. They formerly lived in Hell and could assume more forms there including this "true" form. I wrote all of the backstory explaining their species on a whole pdf I thought of posting here first, but as it is 13 pages long it would be insane long on a post here. The "egg lore" is basically me making them a dragon, so joking they are one of the egg laying 2hus, but the story behind it is actually pretty dark, which is one more reason why I hesitate posting their whole story here, the TW tags list would be ridiculous. I guess people can DM me if theyre interested in getting the pdf :^)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Konngara and Shingyoku sillies
Its literally one of my rare Touhou ships, and it might be extremely random, but ive wrote a lot about them to make it feels much more than a simple crackship, as mentionned a bit above Shingyoku living formerly in Hell explaining how they would be able to interact :^) once again its in my big Shingyoku manifesto pdf and it would take me so long to explain :')
Tumblr media
Shingyoku but its a tiny wawa. Smol. One of their headcanon additional form I imagined. Its their weakest form they assume to recover strength basically. Theyre often exhausted from their powers. (A tiny. Still speaks like your grandfather).
Tumblr media
Shingyoku watermelon explosion using rubber bands, Suika death live (I love Suika shes top 10 so dont think of it as a hate post ty). Ive drawn the first ver of it a while ago, jusy redrew it :)

Thats it for now ty baiiii
I loev Shingyoku :)

“Well this Halloween season certainly got interesting.”
Aura and Holly look over their floating web of evidence. Their gut feeling was right; something IS going on. Reports of jiangshi bites have exploded across Gensokyo, and it seems like nobody-human, youkai, fairy, and perhaps even kami-was safe.
Tumblr media
“This is really starting to look like the beginnings of a zombie army.”
Tumblr media
“And with your talk with Tojiko revealing even Seiga to be a victim, we’re without a suspect.”
The older magician wanders over to the window, gazing out of it.
“The case has only started, but it’s gone as cold as a corpse.”
Tumblr media
“Maybe save the noir detective act for something a little less serious?”
Tumblr media
“Hey, sometimes you need a little levity.”
Tumblr media
“But of course, the most concerning part...”
He returns to the web and retrieves a set of documents. It’s witness reports of Reimu looking less than well.
“Is that our usual protector may not be able to resolve this one...”

Hey everyone! I was inspired by @aragonlediagon when making this Shingy drawing, this is my personal interpretation of Shingyoku as I like to imagine them as a japanised chinese kami as in my headcanon they were a chinese immigrant who came to Japan during the Ming-dynasty thus explaining Shingyoku´s very chinese fashion, I also love the idea that Shingyoku in my world is also the Hakurei kami as they would be Reimu´s ancestor hundreds of years ago.
I tried to give their male form a Ming-dynasty official robe and a futou hat as well with some cute shoes as well, they also have a long hime-cut and dark-colored nails as I like them to have some cool features like that considering how their definition of masculinity is probably different from modern human sensibilities.
Reimu loves her chinese ancestor even though she might need those mandarin translation books :)
(Also don´t roast my drawing skills too bad, this is my first drawing on a tablet)

The Aki Sisters, Minoriko Aki and Shizuha Aki:
Tumblr media
As you already know, Shinto is a polytheistic religion. In fact, it's REALLY polytheist. There are countless gods, or "kami", of various shapes and sizes. 8 million gods is often used as a shorthand for how many there are. For that matter, the threshold for "godhood" is actually rather lower than most religions. There are gods of incredibly specific concepts.
In this case, the Aki sisters. Minoriko Aki is the one with the hat and apron and Shizuha Aki is the one without. Minoriko Aki is the younger one. They're gods of Autumn. Very specific parts of Autumn. Minoriko Aki is the more powerful of the two, being a god of agriculture and harvest. Shizuha, meanwhile... is the god of dead leaves. She turns leaves orange, red, and brown when fall comes around, and that's it. Truly someone capable of smiting you.
They both appear in Stage 1 of Touhou 10: Mountain of Faith. Shizuha Aki is the miniboss, and Minoriko Aki is the boss. They're fought at a rice field somewhere near the base of Youkai Mountain, that Minoriko manages.
Minoriko Aki is of course the more popular one. She's nice enough, but easily frustrated into fighting. She wears homemade yam-scented perfume, which Reimu thinks makes her smell delicious. Of course, Minoriko interprets this as a death threat somehow and attacks.
Fun Fact: While the mob cap is a notorious aspect of Touhou character design, Minoriko Aki is so far the last new character to wear one. She debuted in 2007, so it's been a long time since the "diaper hats" were as ubiquitous as they're assumed to be.
