katya would like you all to know that his chosen f1 meow meow is george russell, 90% because he can say “by george!” and be referring to george russell, 7% because he says crikey and blimey unironically and 3% because he actually likes him

For the Barbie Role Models line (an extension of what was previously called the Sheroes line), every year Mattel releases a number of dolls in the likeness of various women who they consider deserving of praise and recognition, and to be held up as inspirational to young girls.
Most of these dolls are released as one of a kind releases that are given as gifts to the women they represent, though some have been released as more widespread collectors items as well.
For 2023, Mattel specifically honoured women in STEM, creating Barbies in the likeness of seven prominent women in STEM fields.
Tumblr media
Three of these women were the Wojcicki sisters - Susan, the longterm CEO of YouTube, Anne, the co-founder and CEO of 23andMe, and Janet, Professor of Paediatrics and Epidemiology at University of California San Francisco.
Rounding out the list were Mexican science show host and electrical engineer, Katya Echazarreta, UK space scientist and space educator, Dr. Maggie Aderin-Pocock, German marine researcher and microbiologist Dr. Antje Boetius, and Chinese cofounder of ETU Education, Yinuo Li.

i love that subtle part in goncharov (1973) when goncharov asks katya for the time and she says she doesn’t know because, she says, her watch has stopped working. and then there’s a close up on her watch later on and it’s still ticking. like not only does it tell u everything you need to know about their relationship but it’s also great foreshadowing for how she fakes her death later on.

I have the uncomfortable urge to make a tumblr blog pretending to be someone that doesn't understand that Goncharov (1973) is fake.
Not to trick other people into believing it's real, but because I myself don't understand the joke. I would make up fake stories about watching the movie, trying to insert myself in discourse all while seeming to be someone who clings onto a piece of media for the clout, while not understanding that said piece of media doesn't exist at all.
And then, I would have a breakdown and make a huge post explaining that I couldn't find the movie anywhere, that all my stories are a lie, that I just went along with it because it was trendy but ended up falling in love with the concept and that I feel like a conman who tricked my followers into believing something that wasn't true.
Then, I would stop posting, leaving everyone who witnessed the decline of my mental state haunted with the knowledge that a tumblr meme drove someone to insanity. My blog would be an abandoned shrine to the cruel irony of lying, in a metaphor so layered that it would take me a whole other post to explain.

sometimes I get doubtful of my anarchistic faith in humanity's ability to organize and live fully liberated from hierarchy and authority.... but then thousands of fucking weirdos will get together to spontaneously manifest a goddamn mafia film with consistent themes of alienation and yearning and powerlessness, complete with art and discourse and analysis that creates the film itself through the act of dissecting and meditating on it.
like Katya said in that scene on the balcony as she and Sofia share a single lonely cigarette together, "I don't know if I feel more hopeful but I suppose I'm at least feeling something."

hot take, I've seen a lot of Goncharov™ discourse but no one is really taking about how it's so metaphor dense that *of course* people are going to have such different experiences with it. you can have dozens of different ideas about what happened in it and they'd all be right

Little known fact about Goncharov, its actually based on a book!
However, the book, like most russian lit, is Victor Hugo-long. Its incredibly dry and drawn out, except for the verbal fights between Katya and Goncharov where she is spitting Straight ACID at him. (I about clutched my pearls, and yelled 'GET HIS ASS!' while reading it myself!)
Anyway, its TRULY inspiring the way Scorsese took this ho-hum fgorgettable novel and turned it into this absolute scorcher of an atmospheric thriller! Not to say anything of the performances!
Watching Katya's lines come to electrified LIFE was absolutely stunning. It should have gotten her actress an Oscar, but yknow, its all rigged. And making anything Russian look good/supporting it was pretty against the zietgiest of the time (cuz of the Cold War, yanno?). Anyway, glad to see this movie finally getting its due!✨ Scorsese and his crew deserve the world!
