When image macros are spread widely around the internet, they are referred to simply as memes. Internet memes are the same as regular memes, but specifically (and obviously) situated on the internet. They provide a vivid example of the ways in which fanfiction and memes overlap, ultimately creating memes which are more fit and adaptive. 

On her personal blog KC Kahler dedicated multiple posts to displaying image macros which combined screenshots from Jane Austen film adaptations with headlines from popular satirical news outlet, The Onion. 

Kahler’s image macro shown above does not expand far beyond Jane Austen’s pre-existing narrative world of Emma. It does, however, almost perfectly represent the two major conflicting themes present in Austen as a meme (which I discussed in my last post), the theme of marriage plot and the undeniable presence of sarcasm. This image macro actually helps me better understand how marriage plot and sarcasm co-exist so well. Of course Emma married Mr. Knightley in the end. Of course marriage is really about financial security. 

An example of one of Kahler’s image macros which is especially fanfiction-esque, shows an image of Northanger Abbey’s Catherine Morland and Henry Tilney embracing, with The Onion headline “Reverend Blessed with 9-inch Penis”. Obviously, this is far more sexual than any content Jane Austen actually wrote about in Northanger Abbey (or any of her novels). This image macro thus functions as fanfiction by producing, or at least suggesting, a hidden plot line within the original narrative world: one in which Henry Tilney’s appeal was a generous (physical) endowment.  

Image macros such as these, and internet memes in general, aid the survival of Austen as a meme more generally. People who were not pre-existing fans of Jane Austen are likely to stumble across some of these memes. They are not difficult to consume, and thus, Austen as meme is able to spread incredibly quickly. It is possible, also, that these memes will lead new people back to original works by Austen.

Sellout crowd of women’s soccer fans watch US top Japan at Children’s Mercy Park

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The US Women’s National Team beat Japan 4-2 Thursday in front of a sellout crowd of 18,467 at Children’s Mercy Park.

Alex Morgan scored her fourth career hat trick, and Megan Rapinoe added the team’s final goal. The game was the nightcap of the first round of action in the 2018 Tournament of Nations.

“Kansas City is really the hub of soccer now,” Kim Brummett said.

This round of the tournament also features national teams from Brazil and Australia, but the crowd of red, white and blue was there to support the U.S. women.

“Every time they take the field is magical, so I’m in heaven right here. The next eight days are like New Year’s Eve, Mardi Gras and New Year’s Eve all rolled into one,” one fan who asked to only be identified as “Joe” said.

“This is my first time, so I’m excited. I’ve seen Sporting KC play, but I’ve never seen the U.S. play before,” Alex Kahler said before getting her face painted for the game.

Though it was Kahler’s first game, it was Joe’s 41st trip to see Team USA in just the past 3 years. He’s traveled the country, only missing five games, but says Kansas City’s American Outlaws supporter squad is like no other.

“It is two hours (of) thunderous, continual, never-ending chants and songs. They bring it. When you think they may be tailing off a bit, they bring it more,” he said.

The tournament heads to Hartford, Connecticut, where the U.S. National Women’s Team will take on Australia on Sunday. Australia defeated Brazil 3-1 in the opener Thursday at Children’s Mercy Park.

OMG. I got mentioned in @theatlantic The Atlantic, y’all.

But I’m partial to this series from the writer and blogger KC Kahler: a mash-up of Onion headlines and Austen-adaptation scenes that perfectly captures Austen’s seamless blend of large-scale and small-scale social satire. Juxtaposing crass or clinical text with gauzy romantic imagery, she addresses broader issues like class and gender dynamics by noting how they play out in everyday awkward moments.

Yup, that’s totally what I was doing.

do you perhaps have any suggestions for novels with a "jane austen feel"?

tbh the only novels i read with a feel jane austen feel are pride and prejudice fanfiction. some of my favorite authors on amazon are: lory lilian, nicole clarkston, amy d'orazio, julie cooper, cristina morland, caitlin williams, kc kahler, jan ashton, heather moll, ll diamond and jessie lewis. i like other authors as well, but these are the ones i reread the most.

people say jula quinn books have a jane auten vibe, but i haven't read any of her stuff yet.
