let's strap in real quick while i try to sum up all of my issues with these:

this is, in big part, due to a great distaste i have for this current of everything needing to have an 'aesthetic' (which is just hyper consumerism) and it operates like fast fashion. it's all performative and this idea that you need to have only one 'aesthetic' and stick to it is absurd and beyond stupid. this article by maria popova, which references a famous susan sontag article, sums it up well.

i'll go in order. so, dark academia.

the whole ethos and pull of the 'aesthetic' is this fantasy of studying literature in an "old" university, where you talk about art, beauty, literature and it's taken very seriously. the typical visual of the aesthetic is that you're studying at some ivy league school, oxford or cambridge, ect ect. this really blew up during the beginning of the pandemic where we were all attending classes over Zoom and asynchronously, i noticed. there's also this idea that there's something wrong or rotten going on under the surface, something deadly but very very serious and beautiful: at least that's how it's marketed in publishing.

the whole thing is founded on extreme elitism, classicism, intensely Eurocentric and sniffs of white supremacy. it's wish fulfillment based on something pretty terrible at the core and honestly: you really don't need to attend some ivy league school or older university to study literature. you can do that anywhere. a good article that goes into greater detail.

if you want to look at the evils that happen in any university setting, you can do that easily by looking at the sexual assault rates, the racism and violent misogyny and sexual violence of Greek Life on campuses, and racism. not hard, honestly. happens at elite and private schools, happens at public universities.

now cottagecore.

i think this is partially born out of a desire to escape corporate america and the exploitative labor force (which i sympathize with) and wanting to grow your own food and plants, which a lot of us started doing during the beginning of the pandemic. however: people do not realize that to work a farm or cottage is work. to grow your own food, mind your animals, and take care of your own home away from greater society is work and the way that wlw and lesbians have been 'designated' to this "aesthetic" reeks of traditional gender roles being forced on us. the images that may come up when you think of cottagecore also uh

ekes of a colonialist wet dream. it also rubs elbows with the wishes of the alt-right and where they want to force women back into.

both of these popularized aesthetics reek of elitism, misogyny, and white supremacy but fake progressive.

i can see the appeal in these two, but there's so much brushing off and ignoring of the ugly roots of these two (along with so many other "aesthetics")

my other beef with these two is how they've played a part in how now publishing is marketing literature based on tropes and aesthetics and it pisses me off because trying to tell me, "oh it's dark academia," "enemies to lovers" "very cottagecore" not only doesn't tell me jack shit about the book, it's shallow as hell. just because something is 'dark academia' doesn't mean i'm going to like it or enjoy it. same thing if you tell me, "it has lesbians."

great! is there literally anything else you can tell me about this piece of media. that's not enough for me to go on to spark my interest.

the performance of online aesthetics on places like tiktok, instagram, and twitter reeks not only of 2014 tumblr, it reeks of fast fashion. it's all consumerism and consumption.

I just watched Secret of Kells for the first time in the past few weeks and was delighted to see the Pangur Ban poem reference :D

The Monk and his Cat is a song by Samuel Barber as a part of a 10 song cycle of music translated from anonymous poems by Irish monks in the middle ages. [Wikipedia informs me theyre from the 8th-13th centuries.]

I think by far my favorite thing about Secret of Kells in particular is how much fun they have retelling history. The animations of the illustrated book at the end are from the actual Book of Kells, and you get little moments like The Monk and his Cat that they decided to add in just to make the world feel a little more real. Adore that studio <3

11 - first thing when you think about when you think about them: "'vosijk', he almost said. 'my name is holland vosijk.' but it didn't matter now.". there is so much emotion packed into that line and i have it written on a post-it note stuck to my laptop, so that i can suffer emotionally every time i open it. i cannot think about him without the agonies striking

23 - future headcanon: if he had survived a conjuring of light, he would have worked on improving relations between arnes and makt in order to try and undo some of the damage caused by osaron's disappearance. dying is not the only sacrifice a person can make, and the most selfless thing holland could have done at that point was keep living and keep fighting, and in doing so the magic would gradually be able to return. he makes a better diplomat than ruler, seeing as he never wanted the crown, though he would have reclaimed it until he found someone he trusted enough to take over.

24 - what do you think is a secret they have never told anyone: hm. the danes and osaron would have gotten anything they wanted out of him, and he would have told vortalis a lot of things, but i dont think he would have willingly shared the story of how vor died, both because of the vulnerability it entailed and the fact that he never stopped blaming himself. the wound is too raw even seven years later for him to be able to talk about it, and the one person he could discuss it with was dead

30 - funniest scene: giving another one of his scenes that makes me smile. when he is imprisoned beneath the soner rast, a group of guards come in to attack him on behalf of lila, and he just sits there as kell comes in and threatens to attack them all because he 'thought they wanted bloodsport'. only after they leave does holland say anything, and the bastard simply says 'my hero' and attempts to move on. i believe this was also when kell said (paraphrasing) 'you seem awfully good at making enemies. have you ever tried making friends?'. everybody knows this man is a cunt and he does nothing to dispel the rumours.

kell maresh:

18 - how do you think they were as a kid: this largely aligns with canon, but he was simultaneously quiet and cocky. he would never go out of his way to interact with people outside of the palace + tieren, but he was well aware of his intelligence and skill, and willing to flaunt it to get his way or piss people off (see: fletcher). simultaneously a sweet kid and the most infuriating type of child to try and interact with.

19 - most random ship you've seen: the two most popular kell ships are kellila and kellholland, both of which i am fond of, and the adsom fandom is not big enough for rarepairs to be common, so i have not really seen any random ships with him. that being said. i do not like kell/rhy or kell/rhy/alucard, for obvious reasons, though i have stumbled upon it on ao3 before

25 - when do you think they acted most ooc: this is a hard one, probably when he inadvertently convinced king george iii that he could fly. it is the sort of trick kell would pull on someone from grey london that he disliked, but he was fond of george, and putting someone unstable in a dangerous position, especially when he cared about them, is unlike kell. because that man does not care easily, but he cares very deeply.

28 - most unnecessary thing they ever did: discounting the whole 'kay' thing in threads, because i have only read it once and do not have access to the book right now to elaborate accurately, throwing holland's body into black london. logically, i understand it. emotionally, it was uncalled for, and if he hadn't done that, osaron never would have been set free, and he wouldn't have suffered the issues with his magic post-acol. he said the man had suffered enough and then sent his mutilated body to faux-hell. holland did not deserve that.

They weren't exactly friends, even if they had interacted more over the past half a year. Repeated interaction bred a form of familiarity, after all. And, well, knowing about a secret baby gave them some kind of understanding.

Kell had known what White London was like. He had known how the throne passed from one ruler to the next. But he had also known Holland was confident and powerful and devoted to his king. He had stood by Vortalis as a peer and must have been assured in his strength to serve as knight while still being pregnant.

He didn't expect to walk in one day and find two new rulers in the throne room. He didn't expect to see Holland in the corner, silent and muted in a way he hadn't been at even his most reserved.

They had accepted the letter and promised a reply within the week without too much hassle. That was the only positive thing Kell could say about the Dane twins. He'd seen how Astrid especially had looked at him. If Holland hadn't stepped between them...

Throat tight and legs unsteady, he followed the other Antari out of the castle. Holland slowed his pace, allowing Kell to catch up, as they made their way through what might have once been a garden but was now only full of unsettling statues.

Kell glanced at the older man, wishing he could tell what he was thinking. Holland was still a closed book. Kell had too many questions buzzing in his head, too many he was afraid to get answers to.

"What happened?" The question burst out of him. A half question, too lacking to encompass all the unkowns.

What happend to Vortalis? Why haven't you killed the Danes or just left? What happened to the baby? The possibilities were sickening.

Holland gave him an irritated glance but it rang false, barely hiding what he really felt. "Don't play the fool, you know better than that. "

Still Holland, not like the guards with empty gazes, but a lesser version of the way he had been. Too tired to perfectly pretend.

Kell could guess what happened, could guess the pain he was in. He didn't know how or why or what he could do to fix it.

"I'm sorry." It sounded small and pathetic, an apology that changed nothing and gave only empty comfort.

"It's not your fault," Holland dismissed. "This is how the game pieces fell, nothing to be done to change what happened. Most rulers don't last more than two years."

Most White London rulers didn't have an Antari at their beck and call. Vortalis had seemed cold by Arnesian standards but certainly not monstrous; Kell had only needed a couple minutes to see that Astrid and Athos Dane were a different level of dangerous entirely.

"Is there anything I can do to help?"

Holland stiffened, turning on his heel, hand flashing out to tightly grip his arm. "You will not interfere. If you want to help, then play the messenger boy and nothing more. Don't fool yourself into thinking you can affect my cage when you are unable to leave even your own."

"I'm not..." Kell faltered. But he was caged, wasn't he? A gilded one certainly, but still a cage. A prince in name only, always a servant of the crown. But minor compared to whatever trap Holland had been dragged into. "I just can't stand here and do nothing!"

"Don't be foolish." Voice still harsh but his grip softened. "I don't wish to have your blood on my hands as well."

Kell's hands twitched at his side, wanting to reach out, to offer something. But Holland was already turning away, leaving him to stand in the stone garden alone and utterly useless.

Professor Layton speedruns are so funny because there's not really anything impressive skill-wise like a Hollow Knight speedrun or glitch-wise like a Mario 64 speedrun. Answer my puzzles and mash through dialogue fast boy

#like theres a level of planning like which puzzles are the fastest and easiest to input and #which puzzles are the fastest to reach for puzzle solve count #as well as memorization of which answers and doing things like setting the language to something that's faster like japanese #but it doesnt have a huge speedrunning community so i have no idea how optimized runs are #i should get into speedrunning professor layton #unfortunately speedrunning it kinda ruins replayability #bc the games are pretty replayable after some time because you dont remember all the puzzle answers #but speedrunning it forces you to know #book of kells

at this point kell thought that she might as well just move in. she’d been there every night that week and three nights the week prior. her van - where she technically lived - was parked just outside. she didn’t want to come out and say that, however. things were going in a good direction with casey and she liked that. although, they admitted long ago that they’d were much more than friends, she didn’t didn’t know how he’d feel about the thought of living together. kell didn’t want to risk losing him. she couldn’t stand the thought. casey was the first thing in her whole life that had ever felt right. “oh you.” she teased. “what am i going to do with you?” she flopped back down on the bed beside him instead of proceeding to put her shoes on so she could walk back out to the van. it was cold, rainy and gross outside and she’d have to use gas to keep the motor running so she could stay warm out there. staying right there - safe and in his arms - sounded like the better idea to her. “you know i’ve got to return at some point. my plant will die.” it was laughable because it was a cactus. kell had once told casey that she couldn’t keep a single plant alive and he’d presented her with a potted cactus - the worlds easiest plant in the world - and it was still thriving out there on her dashboard. it might as well be self-sustaining. “i think khaki.” the name was meant to be funny but in all reality it probably wasn’t to anyone aside from them. “misses me.” moving closer she snuggled into the comfort of his arms knowing that the cactus was just fine.

do you have beef with the terms mlm and wlw? just curious bc i've seen that take around really briefly in areas but the reasoning was always like 'it sounds like the uwu-ification of queer identities' and im not sure if that's generally what it comes down to or not

oh!! no no no, mlm and wlw are not the terms i have a beef with. i myself am a wlw! it's "dark academia" and "cottagecore" that i have beef with as terms and words. i could go on a spiel about why i dislike them so heavily, but that's for another day.

i'm so sorry for the misunderstanding! the only issue that might crop up with mlm is that it gets mistaken for the Other mlm: multi-level marketing lol.
