[ QUEST: FIRST FIGHTING LESSON ]
azura is older than most when she first learns to fight. she is 19, working at an inn in xakar, chatting away with the guests that have gathered. it is then that one of the guests, a tall, muscular man, questions her on her preferred fighting style. azura has to admit she doesn’t know; has barely even touched a weapon. all she has are her knives, taken with her on her journey from kesthe to xakar in an attempt at protecting herself.
the man laughs, initially thinking azura was merely making a joke, before his face turns more serious. “what, you don’t know how to fight?” azura shakes her head no. “well, that simply won’t do! especially not while living in the great nation of podakko! how else are you meant to settle your squabbles with others?” azura thinks that she would just try to talk to them, but nods in response nonetheless. when he offers to start teaching her swordfighting the following day, she accepts.
swordfighting turns out to be harder than she expected. her breath comes out in rapid bursts, with sweat dripping down her forehead as she sits down following her first lesson. the sword is heavy, and azura isn’t particularly strong. but, the man insists that she should stick with it, and promises to keep training her. she has potential, he says, with how small and fast she is. if only she can get used to the weight of her sword, and learn how to swing it most effectively, as well as train her own strength, she will make a fine swordfighter, he’s sure of it. and so, she decides to trust him and sticks with it.
it takes several months, filled with sweat, the occasional cuts and bruises, until her mentor deems her performance “satisfactory”. not good, not great, not even fine, just satisfactory. but, satisfactory is good enough for now. satisfactory is maybe good enough to give her a fighting chance in a dire situation. satisfactory can only get better.

at first glance, emperor yumi would appear to be sleeping soundly in her bed. at first glance, she looks comfortable and at peace.
her personal priest takes a seat at her side and tearfully checks for a pulse once more, now accompanied by misu and minister dani. she looks up at them and shakes her head, then closes her eyes and weeps. “i’m sorry, there’s nothing i can do,” she manages.
“it’s okay, gayeon,” misu assures her, though her words sound hollow. she approaches, and with a closer look...yumi is pale, becoming more and more like the image of death by the second.
misu takes her mother’s already-cold hand. “mother...” she breathes, and she observes; watches the way the esteemed emperor’s skin grows taught around her bones in mere minutes, her appearance far more skeletal now than when misu first took her hand.
“goddess...” dani mutters in disbelief. misu simply frowns, and somehow, doesn’t look surprised.
“princess...ah, emperor?” gayeon says, her cheeks still wet from tears, but eyes full of questions.
“it’s gleerium,” misu repeats, voice unwavering, full of confidence.
“with all due respect, emperor, how do you know that?” dani asks.
“it’s the same way in which they murdered drewitt. etlia didn’t even hold a proper funeral for him because he was nothing but bones within a few days. alfan and the others didn’t want to disturb anyone that saw his body.”
“how did you know it was gleerium then?” dani questions once more.
“they found the assassin and plenty of information to confirm his affiliation to gleerium,” misu practically snaps, patience clearly wearing thin, but she soon sighs and releases some of her tension.
“what is it...a form of dark magic?” gayeon asks next.
“yes...magic that both poisons and drains life force simultaneously. we don’t know much about it. perhaps the archsage or one of his students may be able to help us.”
“if you would allow me, emperor, i would like to be the one to try to find our answers,” gayeon requests, and misu is quiet, considering. “i have experience with magic, as well as a personal stake in the matter. if i failed to prevent this magic from taking yumi’s life, i would like to redeem myself by learning about it as the source of her death.”
“very well,” misu agrees with a nod, and gayeon bows in gratitude.
“it isn’t your fault, gayeon,” dani attempts to reassure her, and gayeon bows to her as well.
“i appreciate it, minister dani.”
silence falls upon the women and the disintegrating former emperor, before dani finally speaks up: “emperor misu, what is our next move?”
“i’m not certain,” she admits, then thinks in silence for several moments more. “i believe we must follow alfan’s example and not hold a funeral; at least not a more public one. perhaps those closest to her...” more silence, and then: “dani, what is the state of our army?”
“certainly been better. much of it is spread throughout ganggyn to deal with the monster threat.”
“well, i would like an organized army. please find some way to accomplish it.”
“emperor...?”
misu does not acknowledge dani’s concern, and instead says, “may i have a moment with my mother, please?”
both dani and gayeon linger for a moment, before dani nods and leads the way out of the emperor’s bedroom.
it’s only now that misu cries openly. “mother, what happened...?” she whispers, and then she drapes herself over her mother’s body and weeps.
THE ZORATORI ALLIANCE
hawk king daak’s castle is not nearly as impressive as any other castle in deyuis, but that much makes sense: he is not really a king at all. maybe it can compete with faeryn’s relatively humble home, but it certainly cannot touch the rest of the zoratori council’s magnificent forts. still, as is the case for most structures in kesthe.
daak doesn’t exactly have a throne room either. instead, it is more of a very large and impressive office, ceilings remarkably high, plenty of room for any bird to stretch their wings.
now, however, he sits at a desk, perhaps surprisingly, scattered in parchment, making him look far busier than he actually is. maybe it’s intentional.
of course, the young and troubled hawk cannot visit the hawk king’s “throne room” without guards, so they lead him there. it’s only when daak takes one look at the young hawk that he nods to the guards to let him go and leave them be for a few minutes.
“i heard we have a problem,” daak addresses the other hawk, and already sighs.
“yes sir,” the young hawk replies, nodding several times. he recounts the same tale he told the guards outside the hawk’s makeshift palace, and daak listens closely. he sighs once again in the end.
“we had an agreement,” and he sounds both disappointed and exasperated, as if he both expected this result, yet still hoped for better. he turns his attention to the other hawk, looking him right in his eyes. “thank you for telling me,” and then he looks back down at his desk. “it looks like i’ll be paying our dear friend skrarrenniek a visit.”
“i didn’t mean to cause any problems, sir––”
“oh young one, we always have problems.”

an awaited reunion with @odetteuf
azura carefully pulls her hood back over her head as she exits her old house. the only person who can see her at the moment should technically only be her dad’s old friend, but she can never be too careful around kesthe. she’s definitely had that problem before, many many years ago, where she would still have a few residents recognize her.
she sighs as she starts climbing down the ladder going up to the house. it never really stopped annoying her how this city was built. sure, like 99% of its residents were, y’know... birds, but still. it had made it extremely annoying for her to live there, and it’s an annoyance she has to relive every time she comes back to visit.
the last few steps are skipped, and azura drops down on the ground with a soft thud. as she continues walking, she strokes her palms together, an attempt to get rid of the dirt lingering from the ladder. it’s quiet, the only audible sounds being the singing of birds from somewhere far away. there’s never much life in this part of town, it being mostly on the outskirts. but she fears she won’t have as much luck where she’s going next. part of her just wants to go home, already slightly exhausted at the thought of entering the heart of the bird laguz’ residence, but... she’s been getting into the habits of only doing quick visits lately, which means she hadn’t seen odette in a while. and while azura distrusts most laguz, she adores odette. the girl is almost like a little sister to her, and she does feel slightly bad that it’s been a while since she’d stopped by.
azura keeps her head down as she walks through the more populated areas of kesthe, careful to mind her own business, while not seeming suspicious in any way. which is surprisingly a thin line to walk, but she manages to get through the streets and the people that filled them, and arrives safely at her destination: the heron azazel’s residence.
a quick tap on the door, and she is let inside, the servant who opened the door letting her know where odette could be found. while azura has been here plenty of times, enough to not get lost in the hallways, she can never quite seem to get used to just how big this place is. well, big is relative, she supposes. there certainly are nobles and royalty who have much larger residences than this, but it’s far bigger than anything azura has ever lived in, and that includes the one noble family she served years ago.
still, she easily finds the young heron, a grin breaking out on her face as she spots her. “odette!” she calls out, approaching the younger for a hug. “i’m sorry i haven’t been around in a while. buuut! i’m here the rest of the day, so you can have me all to yourself. how does that sound?”

Festetics Palace
Festetics Palace is located in the town of Keszthely in Zala, Hungary. Kristof Festetics began construction on the Baroque castle in 1745. The Festetics family is one of the most significant ducal families in Hungary. In 1759, Kristof had a hospital established in the town. Kristof’s son Paul III became Court Chancellery, the Queen’s Confidential Advisor, and Vice-President to the Hungarian Chamber. He also founded the first primary and second schools of Keszthely. Paul’s son, George I, also made significant contributions to the area by establishing the first agricultural college in Europe, commissioning the vessel Phoenix Galley, and more. The U-shaped palace has 100 rooms, but it has been rebuilt, reconstructed, and enlarged throughout its history. George added an opulent library wing to the palace. The library consists of more than 86,000 items and is open to the public Monday-Friday, where books can be read onsite for a fee. George’s great-grandson, Tassilo II, was considered the “greatest Hungarian aristocrat.” He was Royal Court Chamberlain, Privy Councilor, and Lord Steward. He married English Princess Mary Hamilton and received the title of Prince by Emperor Franz Joseph. Between 1883-1887 Tassilo II had the northern wing of the castle demolished and a new one built with a turreted central section, almost doubling the size of the palace. He had the mansard roof added, along with central heating and plumbing. The Festetics family left the palace in 1944, likely due to Jewish deportations in their town. The Festetics were responsible for building the first synagogue in Keszthely in 1780. Although the history appears to be avoided, Jews with Hungarian surnames lived in Keszthely since 1735 under the local aristocrat protection like the Festetics family. In the summer of 1946, the palace served as a public agricultural school. The property belonged to the Festetics family until nationalized by the Communists in 1949. Festetics Palace is surrounded by a nature preserve that includes a pond, fountains, statues, and flowerbeds. The palace is Hungary’s third-largest in size and the most touristed. The property has the 1880 Palm House, which serves as a type of orangery, and many exhibitions, including the former coach house exhibition, a hunting exhibition, and the historical model railway exhibition near the back gate of the park. Here comes just, a delightful slew of things
My Slime Merchant, Simon, doesn't know his own name. He refers to himself in the 3rd person as Simon, but if you ask him what his name is, he'll respond with anything but Simon
Same Simon only knows one name. It is his pet slug, Sammy
P'omidori Tamati's name translates especially to "Tomato Tomato"
Waux (pronounced like Faux), a small golem made from candle wax, shaped like a grackle. They like to collect shiny trinkets to keep in a bag, charmed to be weightless.
A lot of my OCs tend to get unexpected development the more i plot with them and their existence. Kesth is a character of mine who takes especially heavy inspiration from Blue Jays. One trait i didn't realize he shared with Blue Jays was being very protective of loved ones. So of course, i considered "what would Kesth do to protect his loved ones?"
Kesth is now the embodiment of a Blue Jay and an Orca. If you know orcas, you can understand how this may be a terrifying mistake, but it's a part of him i can't change even if i wanted to now
Bevine Plaguefeather was an OC of mine that started, if i remember right, as a deviantart group OC for demon HighSchool. She has since been revamped into a disasterous TrueNeutral lesbian witch with a rampant thirst for learning and is comprised of 90% rambling chatter
Natobi is a DnD character i made with a few mutuals (ayyyy). His entire character concept is essentially a mashup of "Capcom Monster Hunter" and "Zelda Zora"
On the concept of Zelda, Hakavi is an OC i made with two little versions of himself. The actual character version, used for Breath of the Wild scenarios as an archaeologist, and the NPC version, who is also an archaeologist, but for Majora's Mask scenarios.
Friorn Guanin is one of my favorite fandom OCs. He's a brownblood chef for the Mirthful Church in ancient Alternia. His lusus is a giant frilled chameleon, and he's probably my favorite fantroll out of maybe five ive created (yeah... it's homestuck stuff)
Devante Espada. I created him with one thought in mind. "I want a himbo OC." He has inherited an old warehouse, which he uses to house strange animals he comes across, attempting to rehabilitate them for release. The catch? He's too fucking stupid to realize the animals he's picking up are actually mythological creatures who could, in theory, kill him on the spot. He's also gone through three boyfriends in his lifetime. A unicorn (cursed to a human form), a vampire, and currently a kitsune.
Yes, he's too stupid to realize they're not human. But he loves them still.
Ornus "Ash" Maresi is a wizard i created with a penchant for lighting things on fire, which burns into ashes. He's turned many things into ashes. He's also named after the "Fraxinus Ornus", an ash tree native to southern Europe. His name is a pun.
A few, rare OCs of mine were actually self inserts from fanfiction when i was about 11 or 12 years old. My first self insert OC was actually for Dragon Quest 8.
Despite an uncomfortable fear of spiders, i have a fair few OCs with spider traits or qualities. Correnin, Lyander, Cera, and Mirefla. The last one is just an entire spider. Specifically a mirror spider, who works in tandem with a blind elf.

mw jobs?
that's a hard call considering we're just starting out and don't know what jobs characters are going to have just yet, but mercenaries will probably be popular, and you can go either way on that if you want your character to have mercenary friends or want to fill out a less popular job. maybe an innkeeper would be fun, especially stationed in noyillai where they'll run into people from all over the continent. the usual blacksmith is always welcome, and i think it would be fun to see one of the dragon merchants that sells trinkets in krarzath. maybe an architect as well, especially if they had a hand in building the seemingly floating structures in kesthe, because i'm sure the rest of deyuis would have a lot of questions about how they accomplished it!
truthfully, i'm not creative enough to come up with too many jobs right now, but hopefully that gives you a place to start, and know that we'd be happy to welcome your character no matter what job you chose for them.
