Insane Shit I was Taught as a Mormon (in no particular order)

That all indigenous people in North America were actually Jews who sailed from somewhere in the Middle East all the way to somewhere in either South, Central, or North America in 600 BC.

That somehow these Jews started out white (which...is like Jesus being white, but sure Jan) and then as they became more "sinful" they became darker skinned.

Oh, and by 300 AD all the Nephites (the "white and delightsome" and "holy" people) were killed in a battle with the Lamanites (the sinful and darkskinned people) with only one Nephite left named Moroni who buried an abridged history carved on gold plates, a special translation stone called the Urim and Thumim in a hill in New York State for Joseph Smith, Jr. to find in 1823

That Joseph Smith, Jr. translated the Book of Mormon by "wearing" the Urim and Thumim, which were supposedly a breastplate with lenses set into the shoulders like some weird goggles that you could adjust. (This was official Church History until the last like...twenty years or so, when they finally started admitting how he really "translated" the gold plates. I'll go into that later)

That Adam (as in Adam and Eve) was actually the Archangel Michael given a human body because he was a Super Special Boi who helped God and Jesus create the world.

Lies I Learned the Truth of Once I Put in Minimal Effort:

That the Urim and Thumim weren't real. The way Joseph Smith actually "translated" the Book of Mormon was by putting a "seer stone" in a hat, putting his face in the hat to seal out all the light, and "seeing" the words printed on the stone. This was also a scam he used several years before he started "translating" to find hidden treasure. He was arrested for fraud for doing this in Philadelphia, which was why his future father-in-law didn't want Emma Hale (later Emma Smith) to marry Joseph in the first place.

That Joseph Smith didn't just have three "bonus wives" who were poor women with no man to financially support them, but actually closer to 35. At least eleven of these wives were teenagers when he coerced them into marrying him. At least two were polyandrous, where Joseph coerced both the woman and her legal husband into letting him marry the woman in question. The youngest and most scandalous of these girls was Helen Mar Kimball, who was fourteen. Several of these women then went on to marry Brigham Young, who had a total of fifty-six wives.

Joseph claimed that he was "encouraged" to practice polygamy by an angel with a "drawn sword" and used this to coerce the young women and girls into accepting his proposal.

That Joseph wasn't killed for being The One True Prophet, but for the rumors of him being a polygamist who married children. He was arrested for destroying a federally owned printing press where a former Mormon was printing pamphlets about the girls Joseph Smith was forcing to marry him. The mob that came to Carthage Jail were there because they heard the rumors and wanted to get rid of a pervert, basically.

The Mormon Church lies about a lot of their history. And even when they do finally admit the truth about it, they hide it so you have to really go hunting for the proof in their "approved" sites.

I *understand* the "drabble" militants, since I'm a proponent of words meaning things, but also: language evolves in its use. All the livejournal drabble groups I joined in the 00s were NOT strict about 100 words; it was an "about 100" with a grace of 25-50 words. I've never really been held to 100 and I think the posts about it on tumblr are the first time I've ever seen the discourse despite being fandom old.

I do, of course, understand the skill involved in saying what you want in exactly 100 words, but... 135 words is not a ficlet to me, and microfiction sounds really fucking silly and pretentious about < 300 words lbr. It's still just a paragraph or two. What do you call 75 words? Or 50? "Half drabble"?? Why does this need to be so precise for a word that sounds like it should mean "this is fic-ish?" Drabble as a word SOUNDS right for these. Labeling 150 as "drabble and a half" is so extra when the point I'm trying to convey with the label is: this is it. this is the fic.

And while I do get why using the tag how I choose on ao3 would annoy some people, ummmm FILTER FOR 100 WORDS THEN.

Because there are so many fics of few words that are NOT drabbles, and are often bad or disappointing, but if it's labeled drabble it's like, "I know what I'm about. This is not a short bait "chapter" to get ideas or interaction. This is the fic."

I could piss and moan for a long time and I've wanted to but for now let me just say that in terms of my own personal engagement with this game, I am so fed up and frustrated with it. Completely unrelated but it's so annoying how everyone just assumes you use other sites, or I guess people mostly think of the internet as endless apps now. That's weird to me, it used to just be websites but now every goddamn site has an app and that's what people primarily use. But yeah, people will just link to shit on other sites for everything and that's useless to me. I can't see it or engage with it because I don't and won't (I outright refuse) to get accounts there. I get why they do it, the vast majority of people have no problem signing up and using these places so I'm the odd one out. It's literally what everyone uses, even pretty much all the official sources for anything and everything ever so I miss out on a lot.

Oh, a few days ago now when I opened up two separate tabs, tumblr's layout briefly (and I mean briefly) went back the original design it used to have. News of the day

I hardly do anything at all on Mastodon because not enough people I know are on there (or I can't find them). I do, however, follow the World News Bot and it has been really interesting to get my news from a variety of non-US sources. I also learn stuff that isn't necessarily covered here. Examples for the day:

Al Jazeera has an article about "movement" being detected at a South American mine, raising a possibility of survivors. Given that mine collapses are generally popular sensationalist news stories, I was surprised I hadn't heard about it. So I read the article and found out why I hadn't know.

It turns out, for starters, that the miners went "missing" back in May after a methane explosion. The miners were also there illegally, hoping to snatch whatever gold they could find, and as such their status was never reported. No recovery efforts have been attempted yet because the methane levels are still dangerously high. Personally I think this is "banging sounds were heard" scenario where the "movement detected" is likely a natural settling of the rocks/earth. LBR, the chances of surviving for over a month in a collapsed mine full of methane after an explosion are astronomically against you. At least 31 men gone, just like that.

The BBC tells me that over $1M in research samples on photosynthesis (with a look to improving solar panels) was destroyed because a cleaner unplugged a fridge. This happened in Rennselaer Polytech in NY during the Covid lockdown. The fridge was emitting an alarm beep over a temp fluctuation that the lead scientist decided was within safe parameters, but it was going to take a week before anyone could get in to fix the issue so they hung a sign explaining the problem, saying cleaning wasn't necessary in that area, and also said how you could mute the alarm for 5-10 seconds if you really needed to.

The cleaner, apparently, found the sound annoying and flipped the breaker to silence it. My wild guess is that the cleaner might not have been able to read the sign. I admit, though, that it's equally likely they read the sign and didn't care because they were annoyed. Tsk.

The newsbot is also where I read about the Kenyan death cult that cost over 300 people their lives; the rebel-led massacre of almost 40 students at a school in Uganda; the girl in Guyana who set fire to her dorm (full of indigenous girls) and killed 19 children; and about the cops in NSW (Australia) who tasered a 95 year old woman with dementia, leading to her eventual death.

It's also a good place to get "outside" perspectives on what's happening in the US. The sources may not always be "unbiased," but they at least have different biases, which can also tell you a lot.
