Top 3 Star Trek Deep Space Nine characters
By Ames
Tumblr media
A Star to Steer Her By is continuing our trend of spotlighting minor and one-off characters from all the series. We did it with The Original Series. We did it with The Next Generation. And after having a lot of nostalgic vibes from this week’s podcast episode, we’re ready to give some glory to our favorite characters from Deep Space Nine!
There are just a TON of great characters throughout a series known for its amazing character work, and we did a pretty good job limiting ourselves to those who we didn’t see that much of since so many folks become familiar faces over the course of the show. So spin the wheel with us as you see all our picks below and listen to our very difficult decisions over on the podcast (discussion starts at 1:03:03). These characters will have you yelling “Dabo!”

Tumblr media
Jake – Honorable fights
Aamin Marritza
Tekeny Ghemor
Grilka
Walk a mile in the shoes of any of Jake’s picks and you’ll be exhausted by the hardships you have to endure just to do the right thing. From a pair of Cardassian men whom we’ve discussed in our Cardassians blogpost, one who is trying to atone for the wrongs committed by an entire people and one who is secretly leading a dissident movement on Cardassia, we move on to one of our favorite Klingon lasses who just wants to bring honor to her house in defiance of some of the more sexist laws on Q’onos. Qapla’!
Tumblr media
Ames – Voices of a generation
Tosk
Pel
Lisa Cusak
I am Tosk! The three one-off characters that I’m highlighting all make us not only look differently at how we treat people, but also in how we tell our stories. Let’s start with the first species we meet from the Gamma Quadrant who relates the complicated history of his hunted people with simplicity and humility. Next is the first female Ferengi in Star Trek, who starts us on a journey of change on Ferenginar that becomes a theme throughout the series. And finally, here’s a character who is downright fascinating despite the fact we never even see her on screen, but the sound of her voice is all we really need.
Tumblr media
Caitlin – Found family
Lwaxana Troi
Liam Bilby and Chester
Tekeny Ghemor
Caitlin’s choices for DS9 characters are all complicated parental figures in their own ways, but like good mothers and fathers, they care for their flock and lead by example. We see a repeat from one of Caitlin’s faves from TNG, who has returned to show Odo a new side of herself. We also have a new sorta father figure for O’Brien when he temporarily infiltrates the Orion Syndicate just to have his heart broken a bit, and also Kira’s Cardassian sorta dad who treats her as he would his own daughter… who happens to have her face.
Tumblr media
Chris – One day more to revolution
Michael Eddington
Aamin Marritza
Leck the Eliminator
“Do you hear the people sing? Singing the song of angry men?” Okay, that’s enough Les Misérables quoting for this post. Chris’s picks are all ready to fight for their beliefs, whether they be as leaders within the Maquis, resisting that Federation-Cardassian treaty that boned so many people; as a martyr making a statement about how his people need to be brought to justice for their cruel occupation of Bajor; or just as a normal guy who really loves killing for whatever reason you throw at him!
— We’re going to keep chilling here on the promenade, having a jumja stick, maybe dangling our legs over the second floor landing. There’s more in store for our Deep Space Nine friends next week when we’ll try to thwart our favorite villains of the series. So definitely keep your eyes here for that, keep up with all of our coverage over on SoundCloud or wherever you listen to podcasts, and hop in a roundabout to join us on Facebook and Twitter. There will be no running on the promenade!

@muse-inn sent: "Here are the crystals you wanted. That was more of a walk in the park than a real challenge, though. You have the nine-gauge plasma pistol I asked for?" [Eliminator Leck for A-991 Rick]
Tumblr media
Deals with Ferengis aren't something Rick makes a habit of doing. He honestly can't be assed to learn and follow all their stupid Rules of Acquisition or whatever that shit is called. He knows enough not to be easily scammed if he ever ends up having to do business with them, but it's still too much of a risk.
Leck is an exception to that rule, mostly because he doesn't like following the traditions of his species. No weird contrats, no idiotic demands, no insane laws. If something, the other is as direct in business transactions as he is when it comes to execute someone.
The fact that he is very good at what he does is a great added bonus. These days, finding people who can do their job properly is harder than one would think.
Tumblr media
"H-Hey, I promised you real fuckin' cool weapons, n-not a good time," the black market dealer points out, taking the case he's being handed. "I-If you want that too, a-at least buy me a drink first."
He snorts at his own joke, ignoring Leck's impatience and taking his time to examine one of the crystals. The Eliminator might be different from most Ferengi, but that doesn't mean that Rick trusts him. There's only one person in the entire multiverse who has earned his trust and he definitely isn't one of his business partners.
"Y-Yeah, seems like you got me the right shit," he nods in approval, finally offering the bag he is carrying. "I-I took the liberty of making some adjustments to the original design. N-No recoil, cleaner shots, l-less fuckin' sci-fi noises when you shoot, more precise gunsight...I-I had some time to spare an-and I was bored."
He shrugs, as if augmenting that kind of technology is no big deal. And it isn't...if you're the smartest guy in the universe.

🍻 gimmie leck for badou <3 Meme / @sayonaradumbass
[ 🗡️ ]  Leck has visited planet Earth before two or three times. And a couple more times on holo decks. But this is the first time for him visiting an actual alternate Earth to kill some guy from a different timeline. The job sounded like fun at first for sure.
But it was a quick, easy kill. Absolutely anti-climatic and no challenge at all. A complete bummer.
It is late and the eliminator decides to check out one of the local bars before using the device on his wrist to head back into his own timeline. He wants to have at least some fun while enjoying some alternate dimension shenanigans.
He didn't expect to run into a familiar face here, out of all places. The Ferengi casually takes a seat at the bar, right next to the ginger.

Too bad the Star Trek issue 35 (jan. 98) doesn’t clarify, which of the two Vorta is supposed to be Weyoun.
But - since they also used a picture of Keevan in their interview with Jeff Combs a couple pages later, I guess they were talking about the guy on the right.
Tumblr media
In the Star Trek issue 43 (sep. 89) they get the Vorta right, just to confuse Brunt with eliminator Leck:
Tumblr media
No wonder there is so much confusion about the number of characters Jeff played..

Extra: At this point, I think there’s a 50-50 chance that Leck and Nagamasa could be on good terms or bad terms, mostly because of how gullible Nagamasa can be. XD You mentioned in Leck’s bio that he’s cunning and knows when to behave politely, so if he decides to act polite around Nagamasa, it wouldn’t be too difficult for Leck to start gaining Nagamasa’s trust. Despite the fact that Nagamasa and Leck are so different, what they do have in common is that they dislike being cheated or being lied to. Also, even if Nagamasa somehow found out later that Leck is an Eliminator, that wouldn’t necessarily make him want to cut all ties with Leck / end a potential friendship or alliance with Leck. Assassination, espionage, and surprise attacks are pretty common where Nagamasa comes from (although they’re usually carried out by ninjas rather than samurai like Nagamasa), and although Nagamasa isn’t a fan of such tactics since they go against his ideals of being honest and just, he very grudgingly acknowledges that they have a place in society. Because of his ideals, I think it’d be very unlikely that Nagamasa would hire Leck as an eliminator, because Nagamasa would have an attitude of, “if I want someone dead, I’ll kill them myself!” By the way, even without knowing Leck, Nagamasa would totally rescue him if he felt he needed to. He’s a self-proclaimed hero of justice, so he’ll rescue any stranger without asking too many questions, if they’re in big trouble. XD
Nagamasa would also want to learn more about outer space, the Ferengi, and Leck’s stories, if he’s willing to share. Nagamasa’s never met anyone who isn’t from Earth, and since he’s from late 1500′s / early 1600′s Japan, he hardly has any concept of what an extraterrestrial is. He doesn’t really know about other planets, let alone other solar systems / galaxies / etc., and the only extraterrestrials he can think of are both Japanese legends (the rabbit pounding mochi on the moon, and Princess Kaguya, also from the moon). I’m not sure how much of an interest Leck has in human history, especially what I imagine would be very old human history by his standards, but Nagamasa would happily share tales of his upbringing as a samurai and the battles he’s fought in, in return for Leck’s stories about space.
On the other hand, if Nagamasa learned about Leck’s true nature, he’d immediately label him “evil” and want to kill him. That having been said, Nagamasa is a (mostly) normal human without any weapons, and I imagine Leck is stronger than him and a lot more experienced with fighting, so even with the five small explosions a day that Nagamasa’s been given, I think he’d die pretty easily if he tried to fight Leck right now. He wouldn’t be a fun challenge for Leck at all. XD In addition, since Nagamasa’s whole deal is about seeking out evil and eliminating it, no matter who he angers or what kind of trouble it lands him in, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone hires Leck to eliminate Nagamasa someday.

The corona virus pandemic has pushed professionals to adapt to a remote working style.
The corona virus pandemic has pushed professionals to adapt to a remote working style. Many people have occasionally worked from home, but the transition to a completely distant working life is surprising. About 32% of professionals said they had never worked from home before COVID-19 situation, according to a Procurify survey. Telecommuting is an adjustment, but 69% of those surveyed said their business offered no additional perks to ease the transition from working from home. One of the biggest problems is having all the necessary equipment, and only 53% of those polled said their equipment covered the cost of supplies, according to the survey.
With the economy in free fall, professionals are rightfully worried about finances. Working from home means having solid connectivity, a suitable hardware system, and a space to do your work.
However, not all employees automatically have this service, and 41% of respondents said they don’t think they will be reimbursed immediately for their expenses when working from home.
When asked which supplies would be most useful in their home office, respondents cited the following:
A desk to sit / stand 18%
An ergonomic chair 16%
A new computer screen 15%
A headphone 12%
A printer 10%
Laptop stand 9%
A wireless keyboard and mouse 7%
Director of Motley Daniele Lecke, said: “After the transition to quick remote work, employers may be surprised to see that they can use their personal property such as mobile devices and internet connections at home. Whether you like it or not.” Compensating people with the necessary tools or providing those tools is more critical than ever as people particularly need this support during the corona virus crisis, said Jessica Lim, human resources partner at MyPerfectResume.
For companies discussing equipment provision, Lackey outlined a few groups that, in her opinion, were definitely worth reimbursing. She recommended reimbursing team members who earn at or near minimum wage. Additionally, team members who live in California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Iowa, Montana, or Washington, DC must be compensated as those states require reimbursement for business expenses of employees regardless of salary.
“Providing a work from home is especially important after the recent tax reform of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which eliminated the deduction for un-reimbursed labor expenses,” Lackey said.
Lim offered “professional advice” to the companies, suggesting that they select a specific store and a particular make and model of office supplies so that the process would be consistent and fair to all workers.
The organizations suggested by Lim bear the cost of a laptop, an ergonomic office chair (limited budget), a mouse, a laptop stand, an external monitor, an external keyboard and a printer.

Who’s got the lobes for business: The best Ferengi in Star Trek
By Ames
Tumblr media
Rule of Acquisition number 74: “Knowledge equals profit.” At A Star to Steer Her By, we’re seeking knowledge: specifically the answer to who are our favorite Ferengi characters in Star Trek. The froglike race grew from a satirical take on capitalism in TNG, to a whole planet undergoing a gender revolution in DS9, to the occasional clever gag on Voyager and Lower Decks, and we were fully strapped in for the ride the whole time!
There are a number of good choices for favorite characters in the Quark family alone, so you’re going to see a lot more overlap from the four of us in our final picks. Spin the Dabo Wheel and see who came up as you read on below or listen to our coverage on this week’s podcast episode (discussion starts at 42:45). Pull up a stool!
Tumblr media
Caitlin – Fortune 500 Ferengi
Pel
Quark
Moogie
Caitlin’s favorite Ferengi are all expert entrepreneurs in their own right, even if they have to go about it in their own ways. We demanded more of Pel for proving her worth in a male-dominated world; we’re all unfettered fans of Quark for just how much depth his character got to explore over the years, and of course we delighted in Moogie for literally wearing the pants in her relationship especially when females were supposed to be naked!
Tumblr media
Ames – All that glisters is not latinum
Quark
Pel
Reyga
The Ferengi that Ames wanted to spotlight are those that break the mold on traditional Ferengi social constructs. Again, we see Quark who consistently pushed against the limits of what we were told was Ferengi culture, Pel who defied the gender barrier and got away with it, and a rare throwback from Next Gen in Dr. Reyga, the Ferengi scientist studying in a field we’d never expected to see someone of his race involved in without profit attached!
Tumblr media
Jake  – The beat of a different lobe
Nog
Pel
Leck
Jake wanted to give shout outs to Ferengi to march to the beat of a different drum… just not so loudly as to hurt their ears. Let’s have a standing ovation for Nog for finding his own path in the universe that took him places Ferengi had never been, yet another round of applause for Pel for pretty much everything we’ve already covered, and a little extra aplomb for Leck the Eliminator, a Ferengi so unusual he’d assassinate someone just for the XP.
Tumblr media
Chris – Long-term character investments
Rom
Moogie
Nog
Buy stock in Chris’s picks early on and you’ll reap the rewards by the end of Deep Space Nine. These characters are in for the long haul and develop hugely over the series. Follow along as lowly, disrespected Rom gains confidence over the seasons until he’s actually the Grand Nagus, as Moogie’s influence grows to incite a female revolution on Ferenginar, and as Nog develops from juvenile delinquent to respected Starfleet officer.
We hope you found profit in our choices and didn’t get written up by the FCA. Next week we’ll have the spotlight on another alien race, so make sure you’re keeping up with us here. You can also continue on our voyage through Voyager on SoundCloud, hail us on Facebook and Twitter, and be sure to tip your Dabo girl!

Three Countries to Participate in Singapore Airshow 2020 Flying Displays
Tumblr media
There will be five flying display performances from three countries at the Singapore Airshow 2020, next week. A key highlight of the biennial Singapore Airshow, the flying displays will be witnessed by close to 50,000 trade attendees and 60,000 public day visitors when the aerospace and defence exhibition opens from 11 – 16 February 2020, at the Singapore Changi Exhibition Centre. Flying for the first time in Singapore will be China’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force aerobatics team Ba Yi, the United States Marine Corps’ F-35B Joint Strike Fighter, and the United States Pacific Air Forces’ F-22 Raptor.
Tumblr media
Returning to Singapore Airshow 2020 is the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s integrated aerial display team of an F-15SG fighter jet and two AH-64D attack helicopters. The United States Air Force’s B-52 Stratofortress will also be performing a flyover on 15 February. Mr Leck Chet Lam, Managing Director, Experia Events, organiser of the Singapore Airshow, said, “The flying display at the Singapore Airshow is always a highlight for all visitors. This year’s line-up of both familiar favourites and new teams and aircraft flying for the first time in the aerial segment of Singapore Airshow 2020 is set to heighten anticipation and excitement for another impressive showcase!” The flying display will take place once a day between 12:30 – 13:50 on 11 February, 11:30 to 12:20 on 12 February, 11:30 – 12:05 on 13 February, and twice a day between 11:30 - 12:10 and 14:30 to 15:10 on 15 - 16 February. Star Trek DS9 Rewatch Log, Stardate 1909.08: Missions Reviewed, “You Are Cordially Invited,” “Resurrection,” “Statistical Probabilities,” and “The Magnificent Ferengi.”
First of all, Happy Star Trek Day, and may the Great Bird of the Galaxy Smile on your planet.
In “You Are Cordially Invited,” Worf and Dax decide to move up their wedding so Alexander can attend before going on to a new assignment. As a traditional Klingon wedding, Worf must take his closest friends and spend four nights fasting and suffering, and Jadzia must submit to the attentions of the Lady of the House of Martok, Sirella. Sirella is none too keen on having a non-Klingon enter her house and sets exacting standards for Dax, which she begins to think is a bit much. Also thinking things are a bit much are Alexander, Sisko, Bashir, and O’Brien who have joined Martok in Worf’s ritual. While they are suffering over an open fire, Jadzia decides to have a bachelorette party which Sirella interrupts.

The two come to blows after Sirella calls her a slut, and Dax declares the wedding is off. Worf asks her to apologize, but she will not. Sisko then talks to her about what she knew she was getting into and as someone basically joining the society, she has to pay her due- she is no longer Curzon, respected ambassador to the Empire; she is Jadzia, and needs to do her due diligence. She agrees and the wedding transpires as it should.

A fun episode which is pretty necessary after the arc that started the season. The only real mistake this episode makes is the b-plot involves Odo and Kira avoiding each other as they have not really talked about what happened during the Dominion Occupation with the Female Changeling. They decide to talk while at Dax’s party, and disappear, only to be found still talking the next morning. Their entire resolution occurs off camera. A rare character development misstep for a show so invested in character.  The rest is a nice look at the Klingons though, demonstrating that though the men may rule in council, it is the women who run the houses.  It will be interesting to see if future Trek ever cleans up Ron D. Moore’s TNG discrepancy with the lack of Klingon women in charge as both ST VI: The Undiscovered Country and now Star Trek: Discovery have had women chancellors. Maybe Azetbur made someone very angry in the late 23rdCentury.
There is an apparent “Resurrection” when an intruder beams on it is the Mirror Universe version of Vedek Bareil, who in the MU is really just a thief who never wants to go back.  In spite of herself, Kira feels an affinity for this man, though he is obviously not her Bareil as he has no spirituality whatsoever, much less being an actual priest.
Tumblr media
She begins to introduce him to the Bajoran religion, and a romance sparks between them. It turns out though that he knows more about the religion than she thinks as he is here at the request of her MU counterpart, The Intendant.  They are going to steal an Orb form this universe and take it back making Bareil their Emissary, and uniting Bajor in revolution against the Klingon/Cardassian Alliance. Kira finds out about their plot, and when confronted, Bariel can’t go through with it, stunning the Intendant and taking her back to their universe.
Tumblr media
Though each MU episode gets a little worse, this one actually holds up pretty well.  The moustache twirling counterparts are kept to a minimum, and though operating with ulterior motives, MU Bareil is actually much more likable than Prime Universe Bareil. I find myself kind of wishing we’d seen this one again. As always, Nana Visitor really makes you believe the Intendant and Kira are two different people. Overall an enjoyable episode that probably should have been DS9’s last venture into the MU.
Four other genetically engineered people come to visit Bashir in “Statistical Probabilities,” Unlike Bashir, these four had their augmentation go wrong, so though they are each brilliant, they suffer from other emotional issues. Bashir hopes to make a connection. This happens to coincide with now Gul Damar and Weyoun wanting to negotiate with the Federation to ease the conflict.
Tumblr media
Bashir’s charges take interest and watching the recordings of the talks actually determine what the Dominion is trying to gain with what seems like a peace overture.  Bashir continues to work with them, but they calculate that there is no way the Federation can beat the Dominion. If they continue more than 900 billion people will die. If however they surrender now, no one dies and in five generations  Earth will become the center of a rebellion that will bring down the Dominion and establish a new, stronger Federation that will last for millennia. Starfleet of course decides not to surrender, and Bashir feels they are being ignored; he becomes despondent.
Tumblr media
Jack, the leader of the Augments, realizes that even if they don’t surrender, if the Dominion had the information he and the other have been working with, they could beat the Federation in a year and the Alpha Quadrant would only suffer two billion casualties.  Bashir stops them from leaking information to Weyoun with help from one of the other augments. Sisko wants them sent back to Earth. Jack refuses to speak to Bashir again, but Bashir points out that they can’t know the future with one hundred percent certainty; after all Jack did not predict one of his own would help stop him. Jack asks Bashir to help them present their data if they figure out how to beat the Dominion, to which Bashir happily agrees.
Interesting discussions here on why genetic engineering is still banned, not only because of the possible ambition of someone who believes their superior (which ends up coming to play from both Bashir and Jack) but also how things can go wrong if you tamper with the genome, and how society would have to lean into manipulation for everyone’s kids to keep up. It is rare that Star Trek prior to this dealt with characters who seem to be on the autism spectrum-whether naturally developed or not—and interesting to see how Starfleet might try to tap their talents.  I have to wonder if somehow the Jack Pack may have had some influence on the character of Ensign Tilly on DISCO. This is also an interesting way to present to the audience how badly the war is going for the Federation, and it will of course get worse before it does get better.
“The Magnificent Ferengi” has the Nagus inform Quark that his mother has been kidnapped by the Dominion, and it is up to Quark to get her back before the Ferengi economy collapses without her. Quark recruits a team including Rom and Nog, a Ferengi “Eliminator” named Leck, Cousin Gaila who is still broke after Quark ruined his arms trade, and former liquidator Brunt, who hopes helping will get his position in the FCA back. Quark calls in a favor for saving Kira from the holding cell during the occupation and gets a captured Vorta, Keevan from “Rocks and Shoals” to trade for Ishka.
Tumblr media
They agree to meet on Empok Nor since they will know the layout. The Dominion shows up with Ishka, but their Vorta, Yelgrun has dozens of Jem’Hadar. Quark gets them sent away and is ready to trade when Gaila accidentally kills Keevan. Nog manages to use the medical gear left in the old infirmary to reanimate Keevan’s corpse long enough to make Yelgrun think there will be an exchange. When the body starts walking into walls the gig is up, but Leck manages to take the two remaining Jem’Hadar down. The Ferengi capture Yelgrun, giving the Federation a Vorta for a Vorta. They leave with their rescued prisoner and new hostage while Keevan’s body continues to walk repeatedly into the bulkhead.
Tumblr media
Still a sucker for the Ferengi, and this one has Iggy Pop as Yelgrun! Apparently a Trekkie, he came on after not being able to take a role in “Past Tense.”  He is pretty terrific here, and actually this silly little episode drops a huge hint for the next season when Yelgrun mentions he hates the Ferengi more than the Breen…it will be a year before we find out WHY the Dominion are talking to the Breen, and that certainly doesn’t bode well for the Federation.  It’s one of those little info drops that really only clicks and retrospect, and it’s really a neat find during this rewatch. Also nice with Leck to see there is some diversity in Ferengi culture, and some of them don’t want profit, they just like killing people.
NEXT MISSION: Sisko is escorting a broken Dukat to a war crimes trial when they are shot down and stranded, leading to a mental “Waltz.”

Is there a fact/detail about your muse that you think would surprise people if you told them about it? (Leck and Ashton? Also for anyone else you want)
Tumblr media
90% of my portrayal of Leck is pulled straight out of my brain. He appears only in one episode of Deep Space Nine (technically two, but that other time is cut very very short), he has one appearance in a book and he shows up in one of Star Trek's mobile games as well. There is just not much the Canon provides us with when it comes to Leck, which I still think is sad because he's an interesting character.
The fandom considers him either an assassin or mercenary. People that only know him from the Magnificent Ferengi episode consider him an assassin for his title and attitude towards Quark ('why would you call me if you don't want someone eliminated?')
To me he's a bit of both tho. It is stated in the book that eliminating people alone satisfied his hunger for challenges for a while (thus earning him his Eliminator title), but nowadays he's up for any kind of difficult job. Stealing documents from a high-security archive? He's down for that. The more people call something difficult or even impossible, the more he's interested.
Those that know about him still call him for assassination jobs mostly, though.

Ashton's hometown is unknown in the game. However, you can discover ruins of a town in a desert area where it is mentioned that a warrior wielding two blades originated from there. It is likely that this is hinting towards Ashton and that his home got either destroyed or abandoned at some point. Here I go with the latter if his home ever gets brought up in a thread. It was once a mining town similar to Salvia, but once the mine didn't have much to offer anymore, people moved on. Having grown up in a desert town, Ashton is used to great heat and cold alike. Also worth a mention here, Creepy has a fire breath while Weepy breathes ice, so this contrast of hot (fire) and cold (ice) is something of an aesthetic Ashton has going.
