The Fallen

I blame @vecnuthy for this entirely. Seeing all their Sleep Token posts has completely intersected with Steddie and you get this.

Modern AU: Corroded Coffin makes it big. Like Metallica levels huge. Like every up and coming metal band is clamoring to open for them levels of fame. When this metal band, The Fallen comes on the scene and are dismissed as glam rock wannabes.

They are very theatrical. They are dressed in long coats with hoods and face masks. The guitarist, bassist, and drummer all have full Venetian masks of different colors. The bassist has one that looks like a starry night (but not Starry Night if you know what I mean). The Guitarist has a red devil’s mask, horns and all. The drummer is in a black death mask. The eyes of the mask are closed and it looks eerie as fuck. The most dramatic of the masks belong to the lead singer. He wears an opaque white lace mask with the mouth and chin cut out so he can sing.

Their outfits match their masks.

The lead singer, Abbadon, the fallen angel is in all in white with a splash of color on the lining of his coat. Sometimes it’s pink or baby blue, sometimes it one of the colors of bandmates, black or red or starry midnight blue. He wears high heeled boats and not always of the combat variety. Once he wore stilettos with a baby blue stripe up the side. It’s the outfit that gets made into dolls and merch the most. Most of the time he’s shirtless, but has been known to switch it up with lace or sheer tops.

The guitarist plays up the devil persona to a tee and calls himself Asmodeus, the demon of lust. Red leather and fetish gear. Thick red combat boots. His guitar is even blood red.

The bassist is called Astraeus, the titan of the night. While in certain light his clothes look black, but they are in fact a dark blue with bright stars, swirling galaxies, and glowing nebulae. His bass is of the night sky as well.

And finally the drummer, Azrael. Angel of death. Always in black. His drum kit is black with black metal fittings. Even his drumsticks are black.

Like I said, at first dismissed as wannabes but they are killing it. It’s clear that not only are they talented, their flare for the dramatic adds to their mystique. Soon they are the new rising stars of metal.

Dustin is their biggest fan. He loves them. Eddie is offended at the highest level. How dare this little butthead like The Fallen. Dustin rolls his eyes.

“Dude, Corroded Coffin is still number one in my book,” he tells Eddie. “But you can’t deny that Abbadon is a beast on vocals.”

Eddie is forced to concede the point. Abbadon knows how to really get the through to the emotion of a song.

So when Dustin gets front row tickets to The Fallen’s concert in Indy, Eddie reluctantly joins the little twerp.

And the concert starts. First the drummer gets lowered into his seat on giant raven wings.

“Azrael!” the announcer calls out.

And the crowd goes wild.

The man slips out of the harness and wings ascend. Eddie cocks his head, yeah all right that’s kinda cool.

Azrael hits his drums and the bassist gets lowered on to the stage. All shimmering blues and purples, like actual stars, lands deftly on the stage and Azrael hits the high hat.

“Astraeus!”

The crowd is frantic now. Screaming and jumping up and down.

As soon as the wings are unstrapped and lifted away Astraeus riffs on his bass and the crowd eats it up.

Eddie likes this one. It’s unique.

Then Azrael starts up again as another man is lowered and it takes everything in Eddie’s power not to roll his eyes at this one. Red leather gear, horned mask, and fucking bat wings.

He stomps on the stage and really wails on his guitar. Eddie looks over to see that Dustin is absolutely eating it with the rest of them so he wisely keeps his mouth shut.

“Asmodeus!”

Dustin is vibrating so hard that Eddie’s fears he might literally crawl out of his skin with excitement.

And then the entire stadium goes silent. Like stock still. Eddie is looking around him confused.

He looks back at the stage and there descends the absolute most devastatingly handsome man Eddie has ever seen and he hasn’t seen his face.

His arms are out stretched and his head is bowed. Once he lands air cannons shoot out white feathers out at the crowd and the wings ascend without this man.

“Abbadon!” the announcer screams for the final time.

“Indy!” he shouts into his mouthpiece.

And the crowd screams could deafen the most resilient of metal goer.

Abbadon starts singing and the crowd is losing their god damn minds. And yeah, yeah. Eddie is one of them.

They’ve got a stage presence that can’t be manufactured.

And then about half way through the concert he sees it. Abbadon turns his head just right and holy fuck, Eddie is losing his mind for a different reason. He manages to take a picture with his phone before Abbadon turns.

After the concert Eddie grills Dustin about the band all the way home. But the only thing the kid knows is how awesome the band is.

He gets to the hotel and starts watching every interview with The Fallen ever. And he pulls up one from about a year or so back where Abbadon is talking about the masks.

Abbadon pulls out a black mask and holds it up to the light. “See? You can tell that the eyes have mesh covering over them. They work the way two way mirrors do. Azrael can see out of them just fine, but you can’t see in.”

There are a lot of impressed nods, Eddie is definitely one of them. That’s certainly a neat trick.

“So what’s the reason for the masks at all?” the interviewer asks.

Abbadon looks at the members of his band and they all nod. He licks his lips.

“Because if we had been ourselves when we started on the scene,” he said, “we would have be called posers and we wouldn’t have even gotten this far.”

Eddie paused the video and took a deep breath.

Fuck.

Just then Jeff wanders into the hotel room and looks at the TV.

“Is that The Fallen?”

Eddie hums. “Yup.”

Jeff grabs a drink from the mini-fridge and makes his way over. “Oh hey is that poser interview?”

Eddie hums again.

“He can’t really be serious about that,” Jeff says with a huff. “No one in the metal scene would call anyone posers, not if they truly loved the music.”

“We would have,” Eddie says with a finality that brings Jeff up short.

“The fuck we would have, man,” Jeff snaps. “There’s no way.”

“We would have it was Steve Harrington’s band.”

Jeff’s eyes go wide. “There is no way that’s Steve Harrington.”

Eddie pulls out his phone and zooms in on Abbadon’s neck. He hands his phone to Jeff.

“Okay so the dude has moles on his neck,” he says handing the phone back, “lots of people have them.”

Eddie goes through his phone and pulls up a picture of Steve. He’s not in the exact same pose but it’s close enough. He hands the phone to Jeff again.

Jeff squints and then zooms in.

“Holy fucking shit!”

Eddie drapes his hand over his mouth and purses his lips.

“Steve Harrington in a metal band,” Jeff says in awe. “All be damned.”

“When The Fallen came on the scene,” Eddie says dropping his hand so his talk, “we were outselling Metallica in records and ticket sales. If the rest of the band are preps like Steve we would have mocked them relentlessly.”

Jeff sits down hard on the sofa next to Eddie. “Shit.”

Eddie buries his head in his hands.

“We got to tell someone, man,” Jeff says. “This is huge!”

Eddie in his haste to look at Jeff accidentally hits the remote.

“Do you think you’ll ever do a reveal?” the interviewer asks.

Asmodeus leans over to speak in the microphone. “Ask us again in ten years if we’re still selling out crowds.”

Eddie fumbles it again, but manages to turn off the TV.

Jeff and he looks at each other.

“We can’t say shit, man,” Eddie hisses. “It would be like outing someone as gay or trans before they want to.”

Jeff slumps in his seat. “Fuck. Yeah. You’re right. Shit.”

They’re silent for a moment.

Eddie cocks his head to the side. “What I don’t get is how the kids don’t know.”

Jeff opens his mouth and then closes it. He shakes his head slowly. “Sorry but if I was Steve I wouldn’t tell them shit either.”

Eddie frowns. “What do you mean?”

“Look,” Jeff says turning to face him, “they’re great kids. Brilliant D&D players, nerds, geeks, and dorks the lot of them. But I would not trust them with a secret that big.”

Eddie thought about all the time that they accidentally blurted out something that didn’t make sense out of context, but once you knew, holy shit was it a miracle these kids didn’t get into more trouble.

“Yeah okay.”

After a moment of silence Eddie looks over and frowns at Jeff. “What are you doing my hotel room anyway?”

Jeff holds up his beer. “Your beer was cold, I forgot to put mine in the fridge when we got in.”

“Asshole,” Eddie grouses, bumping Jeff’s shoulder.

Jeff kisses his cheek. “You love me though.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.”

Steve is in his dressing room after their last concert of the tour for their second album scrubbing the hell out of his face because that mask is prone to giving him the worst breakouts, when he notices the blue roses.

He gets a lot of flowers but never blue roses. He rinses off his face and walks over to the them.

There’s a note and he thinks he recognizes the handwriting. It’s short and sweet and absolutely terrifying.

“I know your secret, sweetheart. But don’t worry, I’ll never tell.”

It’s not signed, but the ‘sweetheart’ gives it away.

He messages Robin.

“Get Eddie Munson in here right now!”

She protests that she doesn’t know where he is. But Steve knows he has to still be in the building and sure enough she finds Eddie waiting in the wings, looking smug as hell.

Her eyes go wide and cursing up a storm drags him into the dressing room.

She presses her back to the door.

“Who told?” she squeaks.

Eddie laughs. “No one, I swear.”

“Then how did you know?” Steve asks.

He hands Steve his phone with the picture he took at the concert. Robin wanders over to peak over Steve’s shoulder.

“So it’s a picture of his neck,” she murmurs.

But suddenly Steve gets it. “It’s my moles!”

Eddie nods, pressing his lips together so he doesn’t giggle.

“Shit!” Robin hisses. “Do you think anyone else figured it out?”

“I doubt it,” Eddie says with a shrug. “I’m just obsessive that way.”

“About moles?” Robin says with a frown.

“With Steve.”

Robin blinks. “Right I’m out of here.”

She closes the door behind her and they are left alone.

The night ends with Eddie in Steve’s bed asking him for The Fallen to join Corroded Coffin on their next tour next year and there is no way Steve could say no to that. His bandmates would kill him.

They go on tour and the hardest part is dodging rumors that Eddie is two timing Steve with Abbadon because when The Fallen and Corroded Coffin perform together they make out on stage.

Then for The Fallen’s ten anniversary they do a reveal and Dustin is livid.

Robin and Steve had been telling him for years that they were just low level PAs and not a famous rockstar and his equally mysterious manager.

They’re forgiven when Steve tells him that half the songs on the first album are about him and the rest of the kids.

Black Alternative Music Recs

Not being Black myself, I hesitate to make myself a spokesperson specifically for Black alt artists as I don’t want to be tokenizing or reductive and I’d rather, like, uplift the voices of Black alt people than just make my own lists, BUT, I keep seeing people in the comments of recent posts about Death Grips asking for recs for more Black alternative artists, and I do know a good amount, so as a really basic list I wanted to throw out a few artists I really like—

Light Asylum: Darkwave. Really incredible vocalist, and openly queer. “Dark Allies” is a huge goth club hit but all of her work is great. I’ve seen her live twice and her live concerts are incredible too. One of the bigger Black goth artists.

Ho99o9: Punk/Industrial Hip Hop. Another big one, they’re pretty well known at this point but if you DON’T know them you should. Huuuge variety in sound here, all of it is so fun and solid, absolutely amazing energy.

clipping.: Industrial/Experimental Hip Hop. Really fun and catchy, great lyrics, great mixing, great experimental electronic sound.

Void Palace: Industrial/EBM. Local LA-based act with an amazing industrial dance club sound and vibe. Seen them live and they bring such cool but crazy energy. Really really solid.

O. Children: Darkwave/Post Punk. Really classic gothic sound, amazing vocals, really underrated, theatrical, fun, and moody gothic rock.

Izzy Spears: Industrial/Experimental Hip Hop. Openly gay alternative hip hop artist with a heavy and super danceable beat. I saw him live and he sounded great and had awesome punky energy.

LUSTSICKPUPPY: Punk/Electro-Industrial. Has almost a hyperpop sound sometimes, super high BPM high energy danceable electronic music with a really crazy theatrical style to their performances (kicking myself for missing them last year!). ETA: LSP uses they/them pronouns, corrected now but apologies for missing that irt any older iterations of this post floating around.

Baby Storme: Darkwave/Ethereal Pop. I think she got a bit of popularity on TikTok recently? I don’t use TikTok so idk, but she’s great. Really well mixed, fun, super solid dreamy darkwave with a dancey pop sound intermixed.

Grizz: Darkwave Hip Hop. I JUST discovered this artist, he’s another LA local who just put out a new single that’s getting some attention and he’s really good. Super cool goth fusion sound with really great classic darkwave electronic backing. Check him out!

Cold Gawd: Shoegaze/Post-Hardcore. Iconically sells merch that says “ABOLISH WHITE SHOEGAZE.” Absolute powerhouse of sound; I saw them live and their music sounded torrential, like this intense, powerful storm.

Debby Friday: Dark Electronic/Experimental Hip Hop. Really really haunting and dreamy gothic sound. Collaborates with artists like Boy Harsher. Superbly mixed. Lots of variety in sound but very consistently strong.

Dre Robinson: Industrial/Experimental Electronic. Longtime cEvin Key/Skinny Puppy collaborator. He was on stage with Skuppy during the recent live tour, doing sound and playing the maggot maracas (iykyk). He’s also been involved in a ton of cEvin’s solo work and accompanies him on stage for his live solo shows.

Charles Levi: Industrial/Industrial Rock. Wax Trax!/90s industrial icon, did work for My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and Pigface. He’s recently had a bunch of serious health problems and has a GoFundMe up of you’d like to donate. He contributed to so much classic industrial rock, it’s crazy.

There’s a billion more. These are just some artists I genuinely really like personally who are Black, and I think all of them deserve a ton of support and recognition as contributors to the alternative scene. There’s so many amazing Black-fronted alternative bands and projects, and I’m just scratching the surface with artists I know and enjoy, Also considered listing some larger names like Yves Tumor and Tricky, but I feel they’re slightly more well known in the mainstream with ~1mil+ listeners on Spotify and I wanted to highlight some slightly more underground voices (to varying degrees—obviously some artists here are more well known than others).

M} — move

he’d take so long to initially ask you out, but he’d do it romantically when he finally plucks up the courage. it's been hard for him to get close to someone ever since his dad died, so you'd have to be patient. he didn't know what to get you as a token of his affection. flowers? what if you were allergic? candy? What if you didn't like candy? So he went with something simple, something he did best; he gifted you a portrait he made of you. he played it off all cool like "it ain't even my best work fr" "i can do better than that, yk?" basically trying to prepare himself if you turned him down.

╰╴he's genuinely surprised when you don't reject him. he didn't show it, but he was happy as hell.

I} — interests

he wants to know what you like. he'll check out anything you put him on to, really. movies, shows, artists, books, etc. he'll listen to you rant and ramble about your interests, and he'll nod along, hanging onto every word like it's the most important thing he's ever been told — and he genuinely feels that way. he'll keep tabs on what you like, and give you updates like "oh i heard it's getting a second season", "i think that's getting an adaption, you tryna see it when it comes out?"

╰╴ also, if he sees anything remotely related to your interests, he'll buy it. he hates not knowing what to give people, which is another reason why he pays close attention to what you're into. he keeps all types of merch in his cart so he'll never run out of gift ideas.

L} — love

it'd take even longer for him to finally say "i love you". those three lil words carry a lot of weight to him, and he can't just be throwing them around like it's nothing. he wants to make sure he can trust you, if you're actually his and not just playing with him. once he does say it, tho, he'd be dramatic about it.

╰╴"I need to talk to you rq," "ok... what's up?"

he'd stare at you, silently, studying you for a bit as he tries to build up the courage. he'd take your hands in his, holding them tenderly. he'd give them a gentle squeeze — then, he'd say it.

╰╴♡︎ “Eres tan preciosa para mí. Te quiero...”

E} — emotions

he doesn't like being vulnerable; it takes a while for him to open up to you, but he eventually does, piece by piece. he'd tell you what he stresses about or his other hopes and dreams. he plans to get you and his mama away from all the chaos of the city.

╰╴and he's there for you just as much as you are for him. He listens patiently when you're ranting or venting about something that's bothering you. he waits until you're done talking and tries his best to calm you down after you get worked up and give you advice. other than “i should beat that bitch ass”, he gives really good advice.

S} — sleep

he INSISTS he never sleeps 🙄 he's always up at night doing his vigilante work, protecting what he loves (his city, his mama, you, ofc) but whenever does get the chance to get some rest in, it'd be with you. he'd stop by your place during one of his patrols, just to check on you. y'all would talk for a bit, just enjoying each other's company. then you'd notice how low and hazy his eyes are, and how he's dragging his words a bit.

╰╴"i got shit to do, I can't be tryna go to bed n shit," "i'm not sayin' go to bed, you can take a lil hour nap..." after going back and forth for a while he'd finally give in, with reluctance, flopping onto your bed. he's out almost immediately, clutching you tight as if someone would take you from him while he's asleep.

Their houses are next to one other, and often share books, baking tips, and whatever knitting project their working on! They hang out with Zucker a lot 🐙

MARRIED. They are MARRIED and IN LOVE - 3 year anniversary coming up soon!!! 💜🩷

Bob is the coolest (and only) cat in the whole island. Chrissy was totally smitten with him hehe. He's also a silly boy who is a bit of a gamer - has a super cool set up. A literal textbook himbo 🤭

Chrissy is Francine's twin. They were popstars in their youth (listen to K. K. Bubblegum), and currently she's the only one still in the entertainment businesses. Always dresses fancy - pink and glittery and so so cute 💖. Sings all the time, also the most extroverted of the bunch.

The Cool Girlfriends™ - kinda intimidating at first, but very friendly 💙💖

Francine is Chrissie's twin. Unlike her super chirpy sister, Francine is a bit more elegant and reserved. She now works as a designer - the spotlight was made for her Chrissy, not her. Best friend's with Marshall - The Fashion Duo ever (WILL judge your fashion choices) 💅 ✨

Fuchsia is our resident punk barbie deer. Dresses mostly in black and band merch - we talk a lot about bands and stuff. Very sensible and kind, always there for you if you need to vent. A true punk princess, Avril Lavigne wishes she was her 🖤

Genji

Our newest resident! Moved in last week after Pietro left. He's still getting to know everyone, but so far is getting along super well with Bob - he and Zucker often have game nights and Genji loves it (Elvis is too old to stay up so late, and Marshall prefers to go drink with the girlies).

Genji is a total gym rat but not obnoxious at all - he's just super active. He and Fuchsia will work out together sometimes 🏋️

finally writing about my experience of Sleep token's RCMH show :>

-Everyone was super nice and chatty and handed out trinkets, including blue stickers

-merch lines were genuinley so large that they wrapped around the entire room and then down a floor. some of the security were spooky, but maybe that's just me. The lounges were super nice! bathrooms were really clean and had seat covers, and I believe extra pads and such :>

- Empire state bastard was very cool! loved the bassist and the music even though they did do the classic Fuck Up The Sound Quality So The Main Band Sounds Better. speaking of sound quality, the volume wasn't unreasonably loud and my ears didn't feel weird after!!

- While Sleep Token was setting up, a very nice drum and bass playlist was on, which was honestly kind of calming for me 👍 Also we all cheered when Sam showed up

- during the actual show, I was pretty close to IV's side. He came over to the edge of the stage a couple times to stare people down or smth

-Vessel poking IV with the mic stand

- III teleporting next to II after an intermission and partaking in homosexual activities (kiss) (He jumpscared me) (He's terrifying in person) (I love himb)

- Vessel never really stopped crying after Atlantic I think, which was great btw. Also the lights during Rain were soo pretty. Did I mention lasers yet??

-I recall IV missing a note by like. one fret at some point during a solo and honestly like- me too dude (he was still so good like oh my god dhdbfnf)

-Vess got on his knees during Euclid :< he also played missing limbs on IV's guitar and also did some really fun key changes here and there!!

-II hugged someone!! His solo was great as always :3

- a lot of the audience was crying at the end. they also played I Wanna Dance With Somebody after the show lol

This Place Will Become Your Tomb

(Transcript from the Revolver mag Special Edition)

Released in September 2021, as the world was finally reopening in the wake of the pandemic, Sleep Token's second album, This Place Will Become Your Tomb, marks a significant evolutionary leap from the masked band's previous work. Lyrically and narratively, it's both darker and more nuanced. In terms of world building, it's more complex with additional layers of meaning hidden in the artwork for the record and the merch released in conjunction with it. Musically, it's more cohesive and mature. Lyrically, This Place Will BecomeYour Tomb traces a tumultuous emotional arc. The album opens with the crystalline Atlantic, a song that most fans seem to agree is about the aftermath of a suicide attempt. Vessel wakes up surrounded by unnamed people who “talk me through the damage, consequence and how it's a pain they know they don't understand”. They sob as “they turn to statues at the bedside”.

Flood me like Atlantic, bandage up the trenches. vessel croons is expressing that some have theorized is a wish for death by drowning, echoing the image. On the album's cover, a humanoid figure submerged arms outstretched in bubbling water. Whatever the preferred method, vessel's reasons for his suicide attempt remain ambiguous. Is he trying to escape Sleep to rid himself of the tremendous pain their toxic dynamic causes him? Or does death offer a path for them to be closer? Either way, he desires to leave this place at all costs, as expressed in his agonizing plea, anything to get me to sleep. Later,in the album, the song “High Water” calls back to the apparent act of self-harm when Vessel sings “You are still a perfect reminder of what all these scars on my arms are for”. Across the rest of This place will become your tomb Vessel's emotions are even more vivid, twisted and contradictory than on Sundowning. On “Hypnosis”, Vessel is as love-struck as ever “You know you hypnotize me always”. But his romantic feelings are undercut by a perverse craving for Sleep to “sink your teeth, split my skin, just make me bleed”.

It's from a place of both desire and desperation that Vessel appears to offer Sleep his body for the deity's own gain, possibly even his mind too, since hypnosis might involve some processing another's brain for their own purpose. “Like that” also blurs contrasting sentiments, blending submissive devotion, “fall into your eyes like a grave, burry me to the sound of your name” with frustration at their continual state of war, “talking with razors on your tongue just to provoke my combat”. “Fall for me has” a double meaning of its own when Vessel asks Sleep “Won't you fall for me?” He could either be referring to falling in love or a shared descend to a watery tomb. At the time, Vessel's potent emotions are more straightforward. His mind showcases the strength of his affection for Sleep while the “love you want” sees him desperately trying to keep sleep close when he appears to be straying. For a time, love seems to win out “I'm dying to melt through the heart of her molecules till the particles part like holy water” Vessel sings during the awestruck “Alkaline”,

but the high quickly drops to a low on the next “Distraction” when Vessel once again realizes he's at the point of no return “It's too late for me”. Regarding the depth of his feelings and the hurt such intense devotion can cause by descending Vessel seems to have grown weary of the lack of reciprocity and their relationship “Take it all for nothing”. Again, he sings before aiming a pointed question back at Sleep: “So what would you do for me?” Although “Telomeres” sees the tension cool and desire reclaims center stage, the disorder sets in again by “High Water” as Vessel admits defeat over what appears to be final separation from Sleep.

I will accept that I can't pretend we will ever be together. He concludes and the album finishes with him back in place of emotional devastation and physical injury.

See the title of closing track “Missing Limbs” just like he was in the beginning.

As compelling as the story is that's told on the record, there is a whole other level of the

narrative taking place outside of the song on This place will become your tomb and it's justas intriguing. A significant element of the lore woven into Sleep Token's second LP came in the form of coordinates which fans in the band's Discord and Reddit communities eagerly poured over. A string of numbers on one of the merged designs from the era proved to be coordinates for a whale fall, a seismic oceanic event where a whale carcass falls to the ocean floor and provides nourishment for an entire ecosystem that typically has little to survive on in the dark depths. Additionally, fans with physical copies of the album found a set of numbers on the back of the CD and vinyl editions that reference distance measured in nautical miles. When the nautical miles were converted to letters, they spelled out the phrase Leviatan Sun. In the Bible Leviatan is a sea monster embodying chaos and in Anton LaVey's the Satanic Bible Leviatan represents the element of water.

This place will become your tomb came with even more mysterious numbers. The album's liner notes as well as the artwork for the individual song on YouTube ascribe each track a measurement in meters each larger or deeper than the one before. For example, the measurement of opening track Atlantic is 914meters which fans later discovered was the depth of the first ever Atlantic deep dive. The depth increase and increase until closing track “Missing Limbs” whose corresponding measurements is 10924meters which happens to be the depth of the Mariana Trench, the deepest oceanic trench on earth. It's a lonely place that only five people, half the number of people who've walked on the moon have visited. Speaking of lonely places the artwork for “This Place” there's three singles Alkaline, The Love You Want and Fall For Me which were released in a slower more conventional album rollout than “Sundowning's” tracks contain three additional coordinates between them. Those turned out to be the coordinates of the most remote location on earth point Nemo the furthest spot from any inhabited land mass in any given direction around 1700miles out into the sea. A literal explanation for the inclusion of these Easter eggs would be to pinpoint a possible location where the events of “This Place” narrative play out but it's more likely these numbers and locations serve a poetic purpose. In a whale fall the Leviathan in question has lost its life but its death enables the nourishment of thousands of other life forms. This parallel spells Vessel's relationship with or even function to sleep. Vessel enables Sleep to thrive and continue existing surrendering parts of himself to make this possible.

In addition the whale fall relates to the continued motif of feeding and biting heard throughout Sleep Tokens work. Furthermore it resonates with the themes of obsession, mental illness, self-harm and death in “This Place” twisted love affair as do the two notably isolated locations. Vessel's obsession with Sleep has seemingly brought him to the point of suicidal ideation, a lonely place. Will he sacrifice himself to manipulate to the manipulative deity much like a whale that falls to feed the creatures of the deep? It's no accident that the very first line of the album invokes an image of burial at sea. “Call me when they bury bodies underwater”, the symbolism hardly ends there just as every song on “Sundowning” was given its own visual identity in the form of sigils. Each of “This Place” says songs are represented by a specific sea creature. These have appeared on sleep token merch designs and the feature of some ofthese organisms tie into the themes of the album's narrative. Many of the animals have notable feeding heavens, prominent physical structures related to feeding which echoes the band's preoccupation with biting and consumption. For example the comb jelly that represents “Mine” has five jaws. The black swallower representing “Atlantic” is known for ingesting fish larger than itself, mirroring Vessels call for Sleep to completely consume him, the deep-sea lizard fish that represents “the love you want” will eat anything it meets including members of its own species, a reflection of Sleep's own voracious lawless appetite. Meanwhile the cookie-cutter shark representing “Distraction” is known to migrate vertically coming to the surface at dusk and descending at dawn, an uncanny parallel of the times when Sleep visits vessel is laid out in Sundowning's “the night does not belong to God” - and it feeds by gawking holes out of larger animals. This brutal manner of eating echoes Vessels sense of what sleep does to him: taking without giving, leaving Vessel dislocated in the process. Finally, some of the other organisms are known to live in deeper parts of the ocean, sometimes even corresponding to the deaths indicated by the coordinates each song is labeled with. The Hadal snailfish, for instance, which represents the album's penultimate track “High Water”, is one of the main predators living in the Mariana trench, while the creature corresponding to “Missing Limbs” is the fallen whale itself.

Such heavy themes and multi-layered imagery demand dynamic music to match and This Place more than delivers. Compared to Sleep Token's previous efforts, the individual components of the band's sound are woven tightly together rather than treated as separate parts. Even so, the soft-into-heavy structure that the band favors is just present as on Sundowning, contrasts between the two musical extremes even more stark. “Atlantic” opens as a sweeping piano ballad before racing towards a crescendo as the guitar's thunder in, while Like That vacillates between eerie electronics and crunchy riffs. The guitars are considerably more prominent than on “Sundowning”, lending the album a heavier, grittier tone, yet the album doesn't sacrifice the group's singular genre-fluidity. “The love you want” and “Descending” both return to the softer airier R&B that's threaded throughout This Place's predecessor and record's most adventurous turns arrive during some of its gentlest, most vulnerable tracks. “Missing Limbs” is a sparse, fragile acoustic guitar ode, while “Fall for me” is even starker, sung almost a cappella with the use of a vocoder. All together “This Place” is a more complete and focused record with a greater feeling of cohesion, all without losing a fraction of the band's identity.

This Place dropped at a particularly opportune moment. Shortly before the album's release, in June 2021, Sleep Token played their first post-quarantine life ritual on day one of Download Pilot, a sized down 10 000 capacity version of the iconic British rock and metal festival that was organized as a test event to measure the spread of COVID-19 at live shows. The band played right before the night's hedliners Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes, a notably high-profile slot for a group with only one album their name and a mighty step-up from where Sleep Token had been before the covid-19 shutdown. Seizing the moments they debuted “Alkaline” and set in motion their next chapter.

Five months later, Sleep Token embarked on their biggest UK tour to date, including a ritual at London's 2000 capacity O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire which was over double the size of the last headliner in the capital. The fervor in the stands particularly fizzed in the air, to the point that fans were moshing while Vessel opened to the show with the somber “Atlantic”, playing piano alone under a spotlight before his masked compatriots emerged. The most significant show of the album cycle however was a much more intimate affair. The band - or rather Vessel joined by three female backing singers - played a one-off “Room Below” ritual at London 600-capacity Lafayette in April 2022, after being delayed twice: once in January due to COVID-19 concerns and again in March due to illness. With just an acoustic guitar and piano Sleep Tokens frontman performed stripped-back takes of songs from across the band's discography including the live debut of Sundownings “Give”, plus covers of Outcasts “Hey Ya!” and Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah”.

Being a Sleep Token gig, it was never going to be a run-of-the-mill acoustic show. Indeed, it offered an unprecedented glimpse into the mind of the man underneath the cloak and mask. To that end, Vessel did them two things that most fans never imagined he would do. Firstly, he removed his mask playing the piano with it placed to the side - but he still preserved his anonymity by performing his back to the crowd and his hood up. Secondly, he broke his usual rule over speaking between songs - sort of anyway. A speech was played to the crowd with his voice warped and altered beyond recognition, and it was here that the curtain was pulled back as far as the band would allow.

“Some time ago i was given a message,” Vessel said during the speech. “It was a message that originated from one among you. Someone possessed by a strong desire to tell me something. The message went very simply “you saved me”. “I did not save anyone. I do not believe I have the capacity to save anyone. All I have ever given anyone is a small window into the emotional waiting room of my mind. I do so while doing everything in my power to minimize my own vulnerability. In this way I am selfish I choose not to give what others can and yet I am the benefactor of this thankful praise. I experience a great deal of pain in my life. However I do not believe I have suffered as you have suffered. Perhaps that is another reason why we are all here. At the very least we have all suffered.” He continued : “I am nothing without this music. I am nothing without this mask. So, in this sense, the message I received was true but only in an inverse sense. The truth is I did not save anybody. You saved me."

I have some fun teacher stories for you from this week. Tonight's tales include Sleep Token chats, students keeping it so real, and an Aztec death whistle. (Warning: it's a bit long because I have a ton of stories.)

First, the Sleep Token stories.

Most recent one first! I have a cup. It's one of the resin tumblers that everyone who wants a side hustle has started making, but this one has the cover of Take Me Back to Eden on it. I think it's cool. One of my students saw it while I was taking a sippy-sip (because hydrate or die-drate). One of my students saw it, and he just laughs. I look at him and immediately clock why he is laughing.

Why did it make him laugh?

Well first off, I have a cup of the Seven Inches of Satanic Panic cover, so my having band cups is not new for them. It's just so typical of me, honestly.

Secondly, my students and I have been nerding it out about Sleep Token for weeks. Even though I regularly wear band merch (ST included), my students were surprised to find some Sleep Token songs already existed on our class playlist. One of my students requested a bunch of their songs for our classroom playlist. I have a Microsoft form where students can request new songs for our playlist whenever they want, and she smiled one day and said "Miss ______, you should really check the request form. I think you'll like what I chose."

I was wearing one of their shirts. I saw her requests. "Chickadee (I call my students that), two of those are already on the playlist." Her face lights up as she exclaims, "Wait, really?!?!?!"

"Yup, I'll add the rest of your requests though."

"Thank you! Are there any other songs of theirs on there?"

"I think I put 'Dark Signs' on there already." I ended up adding "The Summoning", "Alkaline", and "Take Me Back to Eden" for this student.

Returning back to the student who laughed about my cup, he asked me to pick a number between 1-10 one day during lunch. I immediately blurt out "4". No hesitation. I'm always here for some chaos.

"Oh of course this is what she would pick". He turns his phone to me to show me that I had picked the next artist he would listen to, and I saw Vessel on that screen. We then proceed the spend the whole 10 minutes of my lunch duty freaking out because he had heard about the doxxing and clearing of Instagram saga. The teacher I was on duty with just looks at us, confused.

Then Wednesday, my comics class was with me while I waited in the Ticketmaster queue for tickets. Tickets went on sale at 10. My planning period ended at 10:05...I had to wait in the queue a bit. We all sat in tense anticipation until the tickets were bought. They were supposed to be working on a project, but a whole group of my seniors were watching, crowded around my desk. We cheered when the tickets were obtained. This leads to my students later in the day being shocked that their English teacher is not boring.

Students Keeping It Real

I love the kids these days. They keep it so real with you. One of my students, who I've built a strong rapport with, was spending her lunch with me and my teacher bestie in her classroom. She and my teacher bestie were discussing how they used to not get long when she turns her attention to me:

"Miss _____, I'm really sorry. Before actually getting to know you, I though you were going to be a mean teacher. Like you were always in the hallways telling us to get to class and to stop kissing in the hallways. But, you know, you're actually one of the nicest teachers, and I, like, love you."

"Well thanks, hun." I was a bit confused, but this is not the first time her first impression of me had me stunned. Earlier in the week, about the time of the cup's debut, she heard me mentioning how I was hoping to get tickets for the tour. Her jaw drops.

"You go to concerts?!?!?!"

"Honey, you had a substitute for two days near the beginning of year, remember? I was at a Ghost concert."

"Are you for real?" I nod slowly to her in reply, eyebrow quirked as I try not to laugh at her shock. "Miss _____, imma be real with you. I didn't think you were cool like that."

Ouch.

For our, final story: the Aztec death whistle.

I have a student who goes to a vocational school for half the day where he gets to work on computers and such. That includes the chance to use a 3d printer. Now this child is an eccentric one. He's a bit of edgelord (affectionate), but he's charming as can be. He can annoy the heck our of you (he does it intentionally), but you just can't be mad at him.

Now, the lovely (and odd) little chickadee of mine decided to 3d print an Aztec death whistle.

And you should already be able to see where this is going.

He came into class, right after lunch. While I was talking to another student at my desk, he sneakily pulls out the whistle and blows into it.

Now before Friday, January 26th, 2024, I had never heard an Aztec death whistle in person. Now that has changed, and I can tell you...

those fuckers are loud.

All throughout the halls you can hear teachers, principals, and students freaking out while he begins silently laughing.

"Miss ______, it was an aztec death whistle." I'm stunned for only a second before my mouth (and my accent) beats my brain to the punch.

"Why the heck do you have an Aztec death whistle?!?!!?"

He merely shrugs. Another student I taught last year pops their head in panicking as they ask if I'm okay.

"Yeah, I'm fine. This chucklehead has an Aztec death whistle," I turn back to him saltier than a pretzel, "which he is putting on my desk until the end of class because I'm having a panic attack now." The student who was worried turns back to the teachers and the principal in the hallway to explain.

"Sorry, Miss _____." A pause. "It is pretty cool though, right? I 3d printed it in class."

"it is actually pretty cool."

I'm the oldest of the band. I'm a bit of a self-proclaimed older sister to the others and I feel super protective of them. When I'm not making music with the band you can usually find me working on my comic or some other artistic pursuit. I'm a chronically exhausted college student. You can tell what songs I wrote by them having a more jazzy or melancholy tone to them or just being bat-shit off the walls insane. Some of my inspirations are MCR, Scene Queen, , Set It Off, and Demi Lovato (for some reason).

I’m that guy with the neon green hair in the blog’s pfp lol. pronouns are he/him, xe/xem/xyr, and it/its. I take a lot of influence from older punk rock and, surprisingly, country and folk music. my favorite bands are My Chemical Romance, Oingo Boingo, They Might Be Giants, The Cure, Talking Heads, Bikini Kill, Shilpa Ray, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Iron Maiden, The Magnetic Fields, The Daniel Pemberton TV Orchestra, Lemon Demon, Man or Astro-Man, Radiohead (not in a pretentious way, I swear), Will Wood, Creedence Clearwater Revival… oh boy, there’s a lot. I like music! I tend to disappear at unpredictable intervals due to chronic pain/fatigue and parental restrictions, but I always come back. I like writing songs about things I’m passionate about, which is often personal, sometimes political, and every now and then a ballad about freaky-looking deep sea creatures. or weevils. I keep my dad’s old stenobook by my bedside to write lyrics in - he wrote lyrics for the Panama City punk bands he was in in 1990-ish in there, and I figured I could put it to good use again after all these years. he’s cool with it. see you around, and stay safe out there 🪲

I'm sassy, I'm trashy and (if you pay me enough) I'll let you put it in my ass-y. I'm the band's second oldest and the token British person. I use any pronouns, I literally don't care what you call me xx. My music taste is all over the place, having been raised by a metalhead and a former chav during a time where pop punk and emo were more mainstream. I'd say my biggest inspirations in terms of performing are Freddie Mercury and Ronnie James Dio. You'll be able to tell which songs are written by me because they're shit! I'm not much good at writing, but I'm great at partying like I'm Paris Hilton. How was the show??? How'd it go???

It was amaziiiiing. Sleep Tolen absolutely killed it. And I thought Architects were going to play new songs (I don't mind them but they're not my favorite) but then they came on and just started blasting All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us in the first second! And I got to see Doomsday performed live 😭😭

Also Sam bragged about knowing who Vessel is

I just want to move somewhere where I won't have to drive multiple hours to shows because my back is always killing me and it makes it not that fun to jump around :/

Also, the venue was really cool. It was outside but like closed off. There was literally McDonald's inside. And I had passes for the terrrace, which has its own bathroom and bar and tables (though I was only there after the show)

I couldn't buy any merch though because the lines were ridiculous and it was 10 pm and I had 3 hour drive till home and work at 8 am :(

I really wanted the new Sleep Token album on vinyl :((

2020s Industrial/EBM & Friends

Hi all! I decided to go ahead and make a Spotify playlist of current artists in the industrial/EBM [and adjacent] scene. I am very tired of stumbling onto countless threads of people saying that industrial music is "dead." It is in fact currently experiencing an incredible booming renaissance! So here is a place where one could hopefully get started.

The requirements for this playlist are simply

Must be within the industrial/EBM scene or close enough to count by my own standards. Trying to avoid anything too far off, so keeping "sibling" genres to a minimum (for example, darkwave or aggrotech), but obviously the genre has evolved very much over the decades and there is still plenty of fusion and diversity in sound!

Must have released new music since 2020 or onwards. This playlist is a combination of older artists who are continuing to release new music (such as PIG and IAMX) as well as brand new artists who have just begun their career with debut EPs (such as Normal Bias and FUEDAL). The only requirement is making new music from 2020 to present; this isn't about new bands per se, just currently active ones. I would like to keep updating this playlist as time goes on and more artists release new work, but that may end up being a time commitment larger than I can promise, so no guarantee on that. But hopefully!

One song per band. This is just to keep things consistent. I wanted to pick a song for each band that's either somewhat popular so as to give an idea of what they're doing that's catching people's attention, and/or a personal preference of my own that I think is cool and worth checking out, lol. Order doesn't matter at all, you can shuffle it as much as you like.

While artists from all backgrounds are featured and I want to make an active effort not to tokenize, I did try to include a wide range of diverse artists, with numerous artists of color, female artists, queer artists, neurodivergent artists, etc on this list.

"[x] band I like isn't on here!"

I am absolutely, 100% confident I have missed more bands than I can even fathom, this is a massive genre and this playlist is in no way whatsoever meant to be comprehensive. I definitely want this playlist to continue to evolve over time. I also admittedly may have not included a band because I just don't really personally care for them enough, or because I didn't feel like they quite fit the sound I was thinking of here. Feel free to send me an ask if you feel like I'm missing something important, and even if I'm not huge on a band, if it seems like they're high in demand I might add them for posterity, lol.

"[x] band isn't real industrial"

Again, this genre has evolved massively since its formation in the 70s. We all know that. I don't really care about splitting hairs too much when it comes to genres; I'm basing this on the scene as it's currently evolved, the community surrounding it (including who these bands play with and the festivals booking them), the cited inspirations and self identification of the bands themselves, and if I personally would be able to sleep at night if I called them industrial in casual conversation, LMAO. I also consider fusion genres a very important part of the life and evolution of a genre, so industrial hip hop, industrial metal, and the likes all make some appearances.

"Spotify sucks"

Yeah. Agreed entirely, cannot argue with you there. But this is the easiest avenue I know of to make a decent, accessible playlist for a wide variety of listeners. Please do check out these artists offsite, follow them on Bandcamp or their other social media sites, buy their music and merch, etc. Unfortunately this also means that many artists who are not on Spotify aren't featured here, which sucks, since there are some absolutely amazing industrial bands coming out of Bandcamp right now who deserve recognition.
