what if you weren’t afraid: lies make friends
Tumblr media
One-Shot | Link to AO3
Aviel wasn't sure she wanted to know the results of the Lie Detector Test. Her best mate, Gary was sure she'd do well. She was honest. But, how honest can you be when you're hiding from your feelings?
— for the lie detector test prompt by @litgwritersroom.

3. A breathy demand: “Kiss me” - and what the other person does to respond. 😊
3. A breathy demand: “Kiss me” - and what the other person does to respond.
For a moment, the world stops, and Adam can only hear the echo of those words, so forceful that they feel like a trick, a trap to tempt him into losing what he craves. Kiss me. Kiss me. Kiss me.
But Sophia is still there, still standing a mere inch away from him, still radiating heat that seems to seep into his very soul, and as pale grey eyes look up at him, anxious and wanting, he finds he cannot move, cannot think.
He wants, desperately - but he thinks of Agent Laveau, of the Trappers, of how this can only make them vulnerable, which means she would be in danger and--
That he cannot allow. Whatever he wants, whatever dormant hopes he hides away in the dark corners of his mind to bloom like mushrooms, he cannot allow her to be harmed, not again.
“I--” Words fail him, as they so often do, and he clamps his mouth shut, lowers his eyes to her lips, chapped from Wayhaven’s frigid climate yet still inviting. Adam cannot stop himself from raising a thumb to her lips and dragging it along the rosy skin there, feeling her shiver at his touch, and it is too much too much too much--
“I cannot--I want--” Adam tries to tell her, tries to stop raven brows from furrowing but chokes on the words like acid, instead shaking his head and letting go of her lips reluctantly.
“I apologise.” Before she can say anything, before she can even breathe, he speeds away, feeling rather than hearing her distant sob and letting the pain from it embrace him as he would not allow her to do.

What would happen if someone would decide to write freely for one of the "hell-ish" visual novel fandoms (choices/litg/lovelink/etc), and by freely I mean *just* write, no warnings, triggers, disclaimers and other stuff? 🧐 Would the world end? The fandoms would implode? I understand that on Tumblr are found all the age ranges but still, what's come down to now is ridiculous! We are living in a dictatorship of censorship that deepens with every day! Where's the freedom of speech? Each person is responsible for himself and those of the minors in his or her/they care. Does anyone really believe that using tags and warnings minors no longer access adult content?! It's really impossible to believe, and so untrue! Instead, writers are treated as if in 2020 no one is able to distinguish between reality and fiction! Writing about something that exists in real life, whether it's sexual, controversial or not exactly orthodox/legal, doesn't mean that you, as a writer, are one with the character, or tgat you instigate the readers to be someone who shouldn't be, for God's sake! What exactly is trying to protect minors with express reference to fanfiction? From real life??? Real life sucks and it's dangerous and full of imperfections and traps aso, why trust that hiding the realities of life under layers of literary "make-up" and social media tools will help the future adults? I'm sure today's teenagers know way more things about adulthood than the actual mature people. It feels fake and unnaturally, unnecessary forced to limit writers and the freedom of creation and expression in the name of "protecting" the young from the ugliness and cruelty of real life. 😕 People have discernment and I think they can decide for themselves what's right and what's wrong, what's real and what's imaginary. I think we should trust it more and stop putting pressure on writers, they didn't invent life, they just present it for what it is! Thank you for listening to me. ☮️
Hey Nonny,
So I totally get what you are saying about freedom of speech and we should be able to protect ourselves, but here’s the thing:
Disclaimers go all the way back to days of Anne Rice suing fan fiction authors, we started putting disclaimers on our fics to keep us from being sued by the original creators, by admitting upfront we don’t own these characters it’s a way of protection.
If you come across a fic without ratings or warnings you have no way to know if you can handle the fic.
Let me explain with my own personal visual trigger. Clowns. I’m terrified of them, I have them filtered every which way I can think of on this hell site because if I see even a “harmless” clown it takes me HOURS to calm down. For you you may see it as pointless to simply put #clown when you post a picture of a clown because it doesn’t affect you but it affects so many people. By taking seconds to tag one word you are saving people from being exposed to something they don’t want to see.
Now let’s take that thought process about helping people be able to keep things that make them uncomfortable wether it’s a squick or a trigger and go back into fan fiction.
Is there over policing? Sure. There are people who will say you can’t write X because X is wrong and why would you want to read about X. Except taboo and hard subjects have been present in literature for centuries. To say you can’t write XYZ for whatever purpose you are going too far. The compromise between the writers and those who may be affected by the content is warnings, triggers tags, and ratings.
If we remove the only thing protecting people from trauma inducing content because it’s stupid, or you’re lazy then you are actively creating the problem. The ratings and warnings are there as a barrier for the people who don’t want to see it and the people who are writing it. If we take the barrier away, yes we are creating chaos and issues within the fandom and this goes for any fandom.
Just take the time to tag your triggers and rate your fics, but also don’t be a dick and try to tell people what they can or can’t write if it’s being properly labeled.
