title: love me something fierce
fandom: the wayhaven chronicles
rating: explicit (mdni)
pairing: ava du mortain/female detective
chapters: 2/3
A/N: time for the second chapter! this one has really fun things in it, i've been excited to share. this chapter also earns the explicit rating.
┗━•❃°•°❀°•°❃•━┛
You wake up in the middle of the night so cold you're shivering under your blankets. You have two thick duvets on top of you, but it's not enough to stand the freezing temperature of the cabin now that you don't have heating anymore, because of the power outage.
You try to close your eyes and get some sleep again, but the coldness of the room and your clattering teeth are keeping you awake. You hear noises downstairs, Ava must be still awake, and in the end you give up on sleeping and get up from the bed, wrapping yourself in a blanket, before descending the squeaky stairs to the living area.
Ava is kneeled on the floor, tending to the flames of the fireplace and looking as focused as always. You smile without meaning to.
“Cannot sleep?” she asks without turning to look at you, feeding the fire another log.
You stare at the orange flames and Ava's side profile for a moment, captivated by the sight of the fire’s glow on her skin. She looks so soft in the low light, her blonde hair is free from its knot and is spilling across her shoulders. You don't think you're ever seen her with her hair down. It suits her.
“No,” you admit finally, wrapping the blanket tighter around you. “It's too cold.”
Ava turns to look at you in concern and your breath catches, when her icy green eyes trace your features across the room.
“Come by the fire,” Ava says and you comply her easily, walking to the couch and sitting down, sinking in its soft flannel plushness with a heavy sigh.

Detective Langford and Agent Adam du Mortain
My detective, Amy Langford, and Adam du Mortain romance moodboard.
Amy is a people driven, science and combat focused detective. She's extremely empathetic, something Adam can learn from and at the same time reign her in when she gives away too much of herself to others.

2, 3, 5, 6, 15 for val/adam
your bias is showing ;-P (jk i know who really are your faves)
2. At this point, does your detective feel as though their walls will eventually tear down in time, or have they given up that will ever happen?
Val is leaning toward the second, though a part of them is lowkey hopeful. Going to show how Adam has them sprung bc Val isn't often one to be hopeful -- especially for good things happening to them (lowkey or otherwise). I think at the end of the day it doesn't matter, because they're on this roller coaster and as often as they say they're gonna get off they either don't or they get back on, so.
3. What do you think drew your detective to A? Did they use flirt options with that first gaze in the detective’s office, or did their attraction come later?
I can't remember. DID THEY? But no, attraction came later. And it was Adam - funnily enough - moments of NOT being judgmental. Val knows they're an acquired taste. And sometimes they act difficult on purpose. However, apparently they are a taste Adam is determined to acquire. He met them with understanding and compassion in more ways than they ever expected, and that definitely drew them in.
He also seemed to GET them and SEE them. And he treated them with respect. That's --- rare for them. So, yeah. As much as Adam drives them crazy, he has them hooked.
Also he's so hot when he crosses his arm and glares. They're but a smol littol detective. They're human. They have eyes.
5. Saying that A has the carnival picture, how do you think your detective will react once they find out they have it?
A mess? LMAO. It would be so surprising to them. That Adam would keep something like that -- Adam of all people (mostly because of Val's low self esteem and partially because of Adam's back of forthness). But it'd also be weird because they don't think anyone has or has wanted to collect memories of them -- so it'd be startling. They would try to deflect their vulnerability with bad jokes (which Adam would see past, and there would come the mess).
6. If your detective heard Sanja’s prophecy for A, how would they feel about it?
Panicked probably. Then upset/mad. The prophecy is daunting stuff and a lot of pressure -- but they'd be annoyed that Adam uses it as an excuse to play keep away (badly). And then miscontrue it as just that, an excuse. Because if he really believed in them, in Val as a person and them as a pair ... wouldn't he -- No big deal.
15. What is your detective’s relationship with Rebecca like? If they saw the conversation that she has with A before the end of Book 2, what would they think?
Who is Rebecca?
It is not good. It's mostly Val being sarcastic and lashing out. So, I feel they might be a bit touched but also like 'the fuck is you?' and make a comment about 'wow, did you google that mom moment? i didn't think you knew how to act like one'.

To be or not to be (a blackmailer)
Danny fit right in with his boyfriend's family. So, well in fact that they've started to fight over who gets to spend time with him. Poor Tim had to fight his family just to spend any time with Danny that wasn't interrupted.
Danny, on the other hand, thought the whole thing was hilarious.
Neither side knew of the other's extracurricular activities, so it made things very interesting, and sometimes things would get.... weird.
Like the time, Tim had brought over a fabulous homemade dinner made exclusively by Alfred for their monthly date night. Danny had actually cleaned up the disaster he called an apartment and put away all the random bits and pieces of scrap he used for his inventions. He'd even gotten the motivation to dust, which would have made Jazz very suspicious, considering he never dusted.
Date night was going very well until Damian showed up to challenge Danny to a duel for Tim's honor. Danny didn't blink an eye when the Demon brat crawled through his 3rd story window with a rapier demanding that Danny fight him then and there to show his dedication to Tim. Danny, having been trained by Lady Pandora herself on many a weapon, and having not had a good spar in some time, eagerly ran to get the rapier he had under his bed. Dani had laughed at him when she saw it, making fun of him for bringing it along when there was no way he would need it. Well, look who's laughing now, Dani!
After only breaking a few things and thoroughly destroying one of his couch cushions, Danny managed to get the upper hand and parry a particularly clever attack from Damian and immediately ripped the rapier out of the teen's hand. Damian then conceded that Danny was a competent opponent, and he had the boy's blessing to date his older yet completely incompetent brother. He also invited a bemused Danny over to the manor to see the litter of kittens he managed to talk his father into letting him foster.
After Danny told Damian he would let him know when he was free, the boy left the way he came, quickly disappearing even though Danny had been watching. Tim was not amused by the whole thing and was very much embarrassed and apologized even though Danny, who had a younger sibling of his own, thought the entire encounter was hilarious.

Funny how the entire season, Crowley is in battle mode and Aziraphale is in romance mode, and then in the last 15 minutes they just switch. Crowley gives a love confession and Aziraphale tries to convince him to help eliminating at least one half of the threats to their love from the inside

“Ava,” you say, turning a page on your copy of Pride and Prejudice. “Please stop.”
Ava doesn't look at you or even acknowledge your words, she keeps staring outside from the frosted window with her hands folded against her chest and jaw flexed with irritation.
Always so stubborn. It's as frustrating as it is endearing, because Ava du Mortain hasn't changed one bit after the day you met her eight months ago. She is honest and sincere, always. She's also the most bull-headed woman you've ever met. Yet, you love that about her. Sometimes, when you're lonely and sick with feeling the way you do, you wish you didn’t.
You sigh at her silence and close your book, keeping your forefinger between the covers to mark the page you were reading.
“The weather won’t change no matter how hard you stare at it. It's supposed to storm for two more days.”
Ava just grunts and unfolds her arms-- only to fold them again a few seconds later. She’s actually wearing a long sleeved shirt because of the weather, it's still grey and boring, but the fabric is fuzzy and it looks soft and warm on her. Her pants are the same as always, though, and her blonde hair is on a bun, but it's just a little bit looser than normally-- a few hair strands frame her serious face nicely, making her expression appear gentler than it is.
You shake your head in exasperation and return to your book.
There are three problems to the situation you have found yourself in:
1. The huge snow storm raging outside that prevents you and Ava from leaving the cabin.
2. Ava and the fact that she has avoided being alone with you for the last two weeks and now you're stuck in here in the middle of nowhere for at least a couple more days than was originally planned.
3. Nat, Farah and Morgan left before the snow storm started for a reconnaissance for your mission. So, you're with Ava. Alone. And things happen to be very awkward between you two because you might have kissed her at the New Year’s party drunk on longing and too much expensive champagne.

I'm on the GO References Library Discord and I wanted to enter the weekly study club ✨ !!
This week's theme was to redraw a film poster/scene including Crowley and Aziraphale ! I picked True Detective because I just finished Season 1 (yes I know I'm late ahahah) ! I thought it would be funny to mix this very dark show with the fun tone of Good Omens.
This Discord's study club is so much fun I hope I'll be able to participate next weeks too ! ❤️

DP x DC worlds greatest detectives ramble
You ever just get a bit tired of the batfamily being dumb?
Sure I appreciate a good “Danny is weird and the Bats try to figure out his deal and draw wrong conclusions based on incomplete evidence” fic as much as the next guy, and I’m definitely not saying not to write them
But the thing is, they’re all really smart. It’s their whole thing, they’re a family of detectives that dress up in colorful costumes and fight crime, but detectives nonetheless
And I get it’s for humorous effect to have otherwise intelligent people be incredibly dumb about one thing, but it’d just be nice to see them be smart sometimes. Even in a fic where they’re drawing the wrong conclusions, it’d be nice to see them use their detective skills
Like build a case so solid Danny questions whether they’re actually right about him and if he’s just confused
Or just apply it to more conventional situations/crimes
Because frankly it’s funnier if you show they’re smart before having them do something really stupid
If you build them up a bit, then it’s funnier when they fall down.
“Where did he go? It’s like he vanished into thin air!?”
“Don’t be silly, see these scuff marks? Someone recently went down this way. The gravel here has been disturbed indicating this manhole cover has been moved recently. Now if we just prop this up…”
“…huh, is that…?”
“Killer Croc and not the twink we were just tracking?”
“Yeah, that”
“Yeah, that’s killer croc… hi Waylon”
*large scaly hand darts out and drags Bat in question down in the sewers while Danny watches invisibly*

I know it's not really canon bc Alfred is seemingly ageless, but I like the idea that he was like 30-ish when Bruce was orphaned. Like Martha Wayne was like 20 when she had Bruce and 28 when she died with Thomas being 23 at Bruce's birth and 31 at the time of the shooting, while the butler they hired was around their age too (Alfred x Martha x Thomas rights), but Bruce never realized bc Alfred goes gray early and is, again, ageless. So, he is like panicking at 21 having acquired a nine year old and he's like 34 when Damian comes in his life and by the time the batfam has settled he's nearly forty and he asks Alfred how the fuck he kept up with him before he calmed down a bit as a teen bc he had a purpose and then fucked off to go train and Alfred just goes "I was ten years younger than you're now, sir, I also don't know how you do it. Have you looked into the Batman retirement plans more?" and it's only then that Bruce learns Alfred also had not fucking clue what he was doing and was pretty young (though way more reasonable than Bruce with Dick's adoption) to have a whole ass child as a responsiblity. Just the idea that they're closer in age tickles me

Young Justice is always a little...concerned. With Phantom's living situation. Now they're outright afraid for him, and Bart has decided it's time to Ask An Adult.
It was the little quips. The tiny little things. Stuff that didn't seem to matter to Phantom at all, or appeared to be normal for him, that he didn't realize weren't normal at all.
"Oh, better not hope my mom catches me." "Doing what, staying out past bedtime?" "Nah, using my powers; she'd vivisect me!"
"Another stab wound. Great." "Don't worry Phantom, I've got the med kit-" "Oh, I'm not a baby or anything, I can handle it just fine. Just gimme a sec to take it out."
"My dad has better aim than that." "...Like, when he's hunting, right?" "...At what other times would he be shooting at me?"
"Huh. Not as bad as my parents place. Look; they have a decontamination shower!" "Phantom, this lab has been vandalized to the point of needing a hazmat suit." "Did I stutter?"
Finding out each others identities did nothing to soothe the worry. Tim quietly told the others that every time he tried to run facial recognition, he kept hitting a government firewall he couldn't breach. Phantom never told them his last name, just his first, and 'Danny' is super common.
The thing that really did it though, the thing that made Bart snap and run off to ask Max, was when Danny had a nightmare.
He was talking in his sleep.
"No. Don't-stop. Stoooop. I need...my skin. Mom, no. You can't...peel off...my skin..."
Bart didn't even wait for them to wake Danny up before he was standing in front of Max, talking a mile a minute as he tried to figure out what to do, with Wally staring in horror over a plate of waffles as he computed everything that Bart was saying.
~~~~~~
Danny had a dream about his mom and Skulker arguing about how to skin him. He wouldn't really call it a nightmare, because it was just Skulker, but the scariest thing was Skulker insisting to his mom that it was possible to skin him with a potato peeler. Dream mom was arguing that it was not, and that from a scientific standpoint that was a really piss poor way to preserve a specimen.
He hadn't been begging them to stop hurting him, he'd been whining at them to knock it off.
But when he wakes up, it's to a room full of worried friends and an old man who calls himself Max.
"Kid, I think we need to talk."
