The second season of A Discovery Of Witches will premiere on Sky One on Friday January 8th at 9pm, it has been announced.

A Discovery Of Witches is set in a world where witches, vampires and daemons secretly live and work alongside humans, hidden in plain sight. The drama series, which is based on Deborah Harkness’ trilogy of novels, is produced by Bad Wolf and stars Matthew Goode, Teresa Palmer, Owen Teale, Alex Kingston, Lindsay Duncan, Valarie Pettiford, Edward Bluemel, Aiysha Hart, Trevor Eve, Malin Buska, Gregg Chillin, Trystan Gravelle, Tanya Moodie, Aisling Loftus and Daniel Ezra.

In season two, Matthew and Diana are in Elizabethan London, where they are hiding in time from the Congregation. Here they must find a powerful witch teacher to help Diana control her magic and search for the elusive Book of Life. Back in the present day, Diana’s beloved aunts, Sarah and Em, must take shelter with notorious witch hunter Ysabeau De Clermont at her ancestral home, Sept-Tours. Meanwhile, in Oxford, Marcus and Miriam take on Matthew’s mantle to protect daemons Nathaniel and Sophie, whose pregnancy is advancing. And Gerbert, Knox, Satu and Domenico are determined to hunt down every clue they can to Diana’s and Matthew’s disappearance, and the secrets their allies are keeping from them.

Nothing determines a season to Hollywood, but the weather. Residents of other climes are still swathing themselves in mufflers and making a beeline from the front door to the fireplace. But here it’s different. Hollywood has already shed its flannels. 

The sure way to set the season is to watch the tennis courts. Last Sunday afternoon, at a country club, Jean Parker and Mary Carlisle played a brisk set - clad in sun suits. 

Then there are other indications. Joan Crawford has filled her swimming pool for the first time since last September. Last week Dolores Del Rio received a truck load of white sand from Monterey for the front yard of her beach home. And one only has to glance at the stars at play in their favorite Hollywood rendezvous to recognize the metamorphosis. 

The other night the ballroom of a popular hotel was filled to the rafters with new gowns. Kay Francis was there, wearing a beautiful dress of king's blue crepe with a huge sash of printed satin. Myrna Loy was there, too, in gray satin with a huge chiffon rose on either shoulder. Jeanette MacDonald appeared in sea-blue net trimmed with silver ribbon. 

But it was little Peggy Conklin who completely stole the show. Peggy wore an exquisite gown on which organdie flowers were appliqued with gold thread. The gown was fashioned simply, with a full, trailing skirt, high waist and modest neck. On each shoulder were starched wings of the same material. 

Ida Lupino's wrap for spring evenings is a full-length affair of ivory-colored, brocaded satin. The full shoulders amply accommodate the puffed sleeves and frail trimmings which are so common to spring dance frocks.

Gail Patrick wears a stunning ensemble of blue and white. The tailored dress is of heavy white crepe. The accompanying sweater is fashioned like a jacket and is of sea-blue angora trimmed with white bone buttons. 

Lucille Ball has a passion for wide belts. Her latest spring frock, a silk print in a red, white and blue design, features a red suede belt exactly six inches wide.

Cree stars as Gallowglass De Clermont, a vampire and soldier of fortune who is particularly fond of his uncle, Matthew. Alongside the Elizabethan action, back in the present day, Diana’s beloved aunts, Sarah and Em, must take shelter with notorious witch hunter Ysabeau De Clermont at her ancestral home, Sept-Tours. Meanwhile, in Oxford, Marcus and Miriam take on Matthew’s mantle to protect daemons Nathaniel and Sophie, whose pregnancy is advancing. And Gerbert, Knox, Satu and Domenico are determined to hunt down every clue they can to Diana’s and Matthew’s disappearance, and the secrets their allies are keeping from them.

A Discovery of Witches season two is based on the ‘Shadow of Night’ novel from Deborah Harkness’s All Souls trilogy and will be coming to Sky One and NOW TV next year. Season one was the most popular series on Sky One last year, bewitching nearly 2million viewers and it was nominated for the ‘New Drama’ category at this year’s National TV Awards. BAFTA Cymru announced the nominations for the 2019 awards today and A Discovery Of Witches was nominated in two categories - Director, Juan Carlos Medina and Production Design, James North. The awards ceremony will be held on Sunday 13th October in Cardiff.

The show was commissioned by Zai Bennett, Managing Director of Content, Sky UK and Ireland, and Cameron Roach, Director of Drama, Sky Studios. Kara Manley is the executive producer for Sky. Made by Bad Wolf Limited, A Discovery of Witches Series two is written by Sarah Dollard (Doctor Who, Being Human), Susie Conklin (The Musketeers, Cranford) and Pete McTighe (Doctor Who) who also serve as executive producers alongside co-founders of Bad Wolf, Jane Tranter and Lachlan MacKinnon along with Deborah Harkness. What I liked: NICKY! I was really excited to get a story all about Nicky. This does a really good job of alternating past and present to flesh out the characters and their relationship. Plus reproductive choices.

A Discovery of Witches drops first season 2 photo, with Matthew Goode in a doublet

The past is about to get witchy.

A Discovery of Witches released the first official photo from its upcoming second season Thursday, featuring witch Diana (Teresa Palmer) and vampire Matthew De Clermont (Matthew Goode) in full Elizabethan garb.

Keen fans of Deborah Harkness’ source novels will recognize the setting as Blackfriars, where Matthew and Diana make their home when they travel back to Elizabethan London to escape the Congregation and unlock the secrets of Ashmole 782, also known as the Book of Life. The photograph showcases Diana in traditional Elizabethan dress, including a full skirt with a farthingale underneath and a high starched collar, a more casual version of a ruff. Matthew walks beside her holding her hand, wearing a leather doublet and matching breeches.

“We’ve finally arrived at Elizabethan London… Who’s excited for season 2?” the show’s Twitter account asked alongside the release of the image.

The first look also comes with some long-awaited casting news, including the actors who will bring to life the fan favorite Gallowglass, Matthew’s Norse-Gaelic vampire nephew, and Phillipe De Clermont, Matthew’s stepfather. Steven Cree, who portrays Jamie Fraser’s beloved brother-in-law Ian Murray on Outlander, will portray Gallowglass, a hunky vampire and soldier of fortune who holds a soft spot for his uncle. British actor James Purefoy, best known for his work on Rome, will play Phillipe, founder of the Congregation, commander of the Knights of Lazarus, and mate of Ysabeau.

Much of the rest of the season 2 cast was announced as well, including Paul Rhys (Victoria) as the frightening vampire Andrew Hubbard, Sheila Hancock (Doctor Who) as the witch Goody Alsop, Barbara Marten (Casualty) as Queen Elizabeth, Jacob Ifan (Cuffs) as Benjamin Fuchs, Holly Aird (Waking the Dead) as Francoise, Michael Lindall (Deep State) as Sir Walter Raleigh, Adam Sklar (Faceless) as Henry Percy, Joshua Pickering as Jack Blackfriars, Elaine Cassidy (Harper’s Island) as Louise De Clermont, Victoria Yeates (Call the Midwife) as Elizabeth Jackson, Adrian Rawlins (Chernobyl) as William Cecil, Lois Chimimba (Doctor Who) as Catherine Streeter, Amy McAllister (Philomena) as Marjorie Cooper, and Milo Twomey (Mother, Father, Son) as Pierre.

Season 2 will also see the return of much of the season 1 cast. As Matthew and Diana face new dangers and mysteries hidden in time, the story in the present day will also continue as Diana’s aunts, Sarah (Alex Kingston) and Em (Valarie Pettiford), take shelter with Matthew’s mother, Ysabeau De Clermont (Lindsay Duncan), at her home in France, Sept-Tours. In Oxford, Matthew’s trusted allies Marcus (Edward Bluemel) and Miriam (Aiysha Hart) will strive to protect daemons Nathaniel (Daniel Ezra) and Sophie (Aisling Loftus). The Congregation, including Gerbert (Trevor Eve), Peter Knox (Owen Teale), Satu (Malin Buska), and Domenico (Gregg Chillin), will also enlist their considerable powers to hunt down Diana and Matthew and the secrets they’re keeping.

Season 2 will be based on Harkness’s second novel in her All Souls Trilogy, Shadow of Night. No premiere date, either in the U.K. or Stateside, has been announced.
