Forse non tutti sanno che la serie televisiva La casa nella prateria è stata tratta da una serie di romanzi dal titolo originale Little House, scritti tra il 1943 e il 1945 dalla scrittrice statunitense Laura Ingalls Wilder. Se siete amanti dei romanzi di Louise May Alcott (Piccole donne) e Lucy Maud Montgomery (Anna dai capelli rossi) credo vi potrebbe veramente piacere questa serie di romanzi che è stata pubblicata più volte anche in Italia col titolo La piccola casa nella prateria, l'ultima edizione in ordine cronologico è di Gallucci editore ed è di facilissima reperibilità.

Laura Elizabeth Ingalls Wilder (Pepin, 1867 – Mansfield, 1957) prese a ispirazione la sua stessa infanzia per scrivere i suoi romanzi, infatti aveva appena quattro anni quando suo padre decise di lasciare il Wisconsin per cominciare una nuova vita nei territori messi a disposizione dei coloni dal governo americano.

Ma di tanto in tanto c’è anche modo di divertirsi… 

Questi libri oltre ad ispirare la serie televisiva che tutti abbiamo visto e che va tuttora in onda in replica sui nostri schermi televisivi ogni giorno sul canale 27 del digitale terrestre, ha anche dato vita ad un cartone animato giapponese prodotto tra il 1975 e il 1976 dal titolo Laura (Sōgen no shōjo Rōra, lett. "Laura la ragazza delle praterie) che andò in onda anche in Italia, ma sinceramente non lo ricordo perchè all'epoca non ero ancora nata e poi non ne lo hanno trasmesso molto in reoplica immagino. Però se vi interessa recuperarne qualche puntata qualcosa su Youtube c'è.

00:09 Wow. Jag har inte ens tänkt på det men HERREGUD vad jag har skrivit och arbetat i December. 04:09 Jag fullkomligt älskar Filip Johnsson. Han bakom Jelly Crystal. Jag vaknade nu mitt natten, med hans låt, Snake in The Grass, i huvudet och var därmed tvungen att lyssna på den. Hans röst är otrolig och musiken är så otroligt bra på alla sätt. 04:11 Juste. Alla människor som jag säger till att jag börjat sjunga, ger mig komplimanger för min röst. So to speak. ”Jag har hört dig sjunga”, den meningen är så sjuk. Senast sa Daniel det och han sa att han föredrar min röst framför de där bearbetade rösterna som gör att folk låter likadant. Komplimangerna börjar bita i mig. 04:19 Vill bo kvar i Stockholm för att hänga med alla dessa människor som jag inte känner. 04:26 Alla känner verkligen varandra här. Jag vet om vilka folk är, men upplever att jag inte känner någon. Jag skall skärpa mig till våren. Det sociala ska nog få backa lite nu när jag kommer tillbaka. Jag måste bygga upp en plan. Olika deadlines. Jag måste för fan göra allt jag vill göra. Allt jag säger att jag skall göra. Vill inte att det ska vara massa snack. 04:42 Vill också vara med och pitcha något någon gång. Eller egentligen inte. Eller kanske. Vill verkligen inte hem än. Åker jag hem innebär det att den här dagen är över och då har jag bara en dag kvar i Stockholm och sedan är det ett nytt år och vips.. New Executive Order Banning Federal Judges‘s Decisions

Washingtrump - After the ruling by two Federal Judges against Trump’s latest travel ban, the White House is set to release a new executive order entitled “Executive Order Protecting the Nation from “So-Called” Judges Decisions against the President’s Executive Orders”.

At a rally in Nashville, Mr. Trump decried the ruling as “judicial overreach”  He stated: “Its sad, makes us look weak...so I  told Steve.... you know Steve Bannon... (applause)... nice guy Steve... a bit feisty... little bit of a drinker’s nose... bit of a topper... a sponge.. but a patriot... so I told Steve... hey... you know these Judges...I got your religious animus right here...we need to do something about it... I mean, we want to make America great again.  So I told him, why don’t we draft an Executive Order banning them from making decisions on Executive Orders.  Steve looked at me... slurring a bit... “Great idea” he said... So... I am announcing today... you guys  are the first to hear this... I am calling for a total and complete shutdown of Federal Judges entering Opinions regarding my Executive Orders.. (Cheers). Until we can figure what the hell is going on!!”

After the rally, Mr. Sessions called Mr. Trump to advise him that he can’t do this since it was on its face unconstitutional.  Mr. Trump reportedly stated: “Oh... Gee Louise... everything is unconstitutional!...I’m not unconstitutional... they are unconstitutional!  Can we ban only Democrat judges? No? how about  Judges with funny names... what? For crying out loud... who knew that being president was so complicated!...Anyone we can fire?  I don’t care... just fire people... but only those with nappy hair... what? Its unconstitutional ... again?... Sad,,, just very sad!”

Later today, Mr. Trump tweeted: “Terrible!  How low have the Federal Judges gone to tapp my phones with Obama.  This is the Davidians/Waco all over again! Bad hombres!”

After reading the latest tweet, Sean Spicer quit and joined a monastery.

Once again, Donald Trump has kicked off a media firestorm with a series of early-morning Tweets, this time leveling the serious accusation that “President Obama had my ‘wires tapped’ in Trump Tower”  just prior to the presidential election.

Though Trump asserted he had “just found out” about this surveillance, he appears to be referencing a series of reports that began with a piece by Louise Mensch in Heat Street back in November, which was later corroborated by articles published by The Guardian and the BBC in January.  The reports may have come to Trump’s attention by way of a Breitbart story that ran on Friday, summarizing claims of a “Deep State” effort to undermine the Trump administration advanced by conservative talk radio host Mark Levin.

If it were true that President Obama had ordered the intelligence community to “tapp” Trump’s phones for political reasons, that would of course be a serious scandal—and crime—of Nixonian proportions. Yet there’s nothing in the published reports—vague though they are—to support such a dramatic allegation.  Let’s try to sort out what we do know.

First, as one would hope Trump is aware, presidents are not supposed to personally order electronic surveillance of particular domestic targets, and the Obama camp has, unsurprisingly, issued a statement denying they did anything of the sort:

Neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any U.S. citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.

Rather, the allegation made by various news sources is that, in connection with a multi-agency intelligence investigation of Russian interference with the presidential election, the FBI sought an order from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court authorizing them to monitor transactions between two Russian banks and four persons connected with the Trump campaign.  The Guardian‘s report alleges that initial applications submitted over the summer, naming “four members of the Trump team suspected of irregular contacts with Russian officials,” were rejected by the FISC. But according to the BBC, a narrower order naming only the Russian banks as direct targets was ultimately approved by the FISC in October.  While the BBC report suggests that the surveillance was meant to ferret out “transfers of money,” the Mensch article asserts that a “warrant was granted to look at the full content of emails and other related documents that may concern US persons.”

Taking all these claims with the appropriate sodium chloride seasoning, what can we infer?  First, contrary to what many on social media—and even a few reporters for reputable outlets—have asserted, the issuance of a FISA order does not imply that the FBI established probable cause to believe that any Trump associate was acting as an “agent of a foreign power” or engaged in criminal wrongdoing.  That would be necessary only if the court had authorized direct electronic surveillance of a United States person, which (if we credit the BBC report) the FISC apparently declined to do.  Assuming the initial applications were indeed for full-blown electronic surveillance orders, then the fact that the FBI supposedly did name the Trump associates at first would suggest they may have thought they had such evidence, but one would expect the FISC to apply particularly exacting scrutiny to an application naming persons associated with an ongoing presidential campaign.  An application targeting only foreign corporate entities—especially entities openly controlled or directed by the Russian government—would require no such showing, even if the FBI’s ultimate interest were in communications concerning those U.S. persons.

It’s worth noting here that, contra Trump’s claim on Twitter, none of the articles in question claim that phones were tapped.  Indeed, it’s not even entirely clear that the order the FISC finally issued in October was a full-blown electronic surveillance warrant requiring a probable cause showing.  If the FBI was primarily interested in obtaining financial transaction records, corporate documents, and (depending on both the facts and the FISC’s interpretation of the FISA statute) perhaps even some stored e-mail communications, that information might well have been obtainable pursuant to a §215 “business records” order, which imposes only the much weaker requirement that the records sought be “relevant to an authorized investigation.”  The BBC’s use of the word “intercept” to describe the investigators’ aim, as well as Mensch’s characterization of the order as a “warrant,” both suggest full-blown electronic surveillance, but reporters aren’t always particularly meticulous about their use of legal terms of art, and similarly, sources with indirect knowledge of an investigation may not be scrupulously exact about the distinction between an “order” and a “warrant.”

In either event, there’s nothing here to suggest either the direct involvement of President Obama nor any clear indication of a violation of the law.  If, however, the primary purpose of the investigation was to build a criminal case against U.S. persons in the Trump camp, then the use of FISA authorities to gather information by naming foreign entities sounds like “reverse targeting”—tasking collection on a foreign target when your real interest is a U.S. person with whom they’re communicating.  That would be, to use the technical term, highly shady even if not unlawful. Thanks to the Patriot Act, however, FISA authorities may be used in investigations that have a “significant” foreign intelligence purpose, even if the “primary” purpose is criminal prosecution—a change from the prior standard imposed by the courts, which had required that foreign intelligence be the “primary” purpose of surveillance under the aegis of FISA, precisely to prevent authorities from evading the stricter requirements imposed by Title III, the statute that covers wiretapping for domestic criminal investigations.

All that said, let’s circle back to Breitbart’s gloss on the Intelligence Community’s investigation of the Trump campaign:

In summary: the Obama administration sought, and eventually obtained, authorization to eavesdrop on the Trump campaign; continued monitoring the Trump team even when no evidence of wrongdoing was found; then relaxed the NSA rules to allow evidence to be shared widely within the government, virtually ensuring that the information, including the conversations of private citizens, would be leaked to the media.

None of this is really supported by the public record. First, the attribution of whatever monitoring occurred to the “Obama administration” insinuates a degree of involvement by the White House or its political appointees for which there is no evidence.   “Eavesdrop” implies surveillance of telephone conversations, which do not appear to have been the focus of the FISC order. (As is now well known, the intelligence community did intercept telephone conversations between former National Security Adviser Mike Flynn and the Russian ambassador—but as a result of routine collection on an acknowledged foreign agent, not surveillance targeting Flynn himself.)  Neither is there any evidence that authorization was sought to collect on “the Trump campaign” per se; rather, the BBC’s report claims that the application ultimately rejected by the FISC focused on “four members of the Trump team.”  Mensch’s original report asserts that Trump was “named” in the initial application, but is vague as to whether that means he was a named target of electronic surveillance.  (Since, again, that would entail showing that Trump himself was an “agent of a foreign power, ” this seems improbable unless the FBI has managed to keep some explosive evidence under wraps in the leakiest political environment I can recall.)  “Continued monitoring” implies some nefarious motive, but a standard FISA surveillance order would run for either 90 days (if targeting a U.S. person) or 120 days (if targeting a non-U.S. person),  so there’s nothing particularly extraordinary in that.

The claim that the administration then “relaxed the NSA rules to allow evidence to be shaed widely within the government” is presumably a reference to the revised guidelines for intelligence sharing issued in January.  First, this revision was first publicly announced in February of last year, and had been in the works since long before any inquiry into Russian election interference began.  Second, it applies to raw signals intelligence obtained by NSA pursuant to Executive Order 12333, not to intelligence gathered by the FBI under the authority of a FISA court order.  Third, there is no evidence whatever that any of the intelligence leaks that have made headlines in recent weeks are connected with the revised guidelines—and, indeed, this seems rather unlikely, since most of those leaks have concerned information disseminated in “finished” intelligence reports, not the “raw” signals intelligence to which the new guidelines apply.

In short, both Breitbart and Trump have advanced claims far more dramatic than anything the public evidence can support.  That said, intelligence monitoring—whether direct or indirect—of persons connected with a presidential campaign inherently carries a high risk of abuse, and as Congress moves to launch its own inquiries into the Trump campaign’s Russian ties, it would be entirely appropriate to further scrutinize  both the FBI’s initial surveillance and applications and the surveillance that was ultimately conducted for any signs of impropriety.  In the meantime, it might behoove the Commander in Chief to refrain from issuing serious and inflammatory accusations based wholly on “intelligence” gleaned from Breitbart News.

Siamo alla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, precisamente il libro inizia nel 1949 quando tutto è distrutto ed allo stesso tempo tutto può essere ricostruito. La Korn ci da una visione piccola, incentrata sui protagonisti della storia che ci narra, ma che permette si spaziare su cosa possa voler dire un nuovo inizio. E questo, ovviamente, racchiude anche la parantesi lavorativa. Ha inizio un periodo di continua evoluzione che in pochi decenni stravolgerà il mondo. Per esempio, possiamo partire dalla radio. Un mezzo indispensabile per sapere le notizie, ma inizia ad andare molto oltre. Si pensano programmi di intrattenimento, puntando sempre di più a conquistare il pubblico in ascolto, pensando di cosa parlare, muovendosi fra attualità musicale e facendo ascoltare i nuovi artisti emergenti, alcuni che conosceremo anche noi "giovani" nati dopo gli anni '90. Si affiancano ad essa professionisti che studiano per poter parlare attraverso questo mezzo, per catturare al meglio il pubblico, affiancati a volte da musicisti che permetteranno un iniziale ampliamento, portando poi i più bravi ad iniziare una carriera musicale dalle prospettive molto ampie. Il ritmo si fa sempre più pressante, perché arriva presto una concorrente spietata e difficile da eguagliare, ovvero la televisione. Credo che tutti ormai ne possediamo almeno una, è qualcosa di banale, quasi superato, ma basta fare un passo indietro per scoprire quanto fosse inusuale e costosa. Eppure dalla comparsa in poche case (inizialmente in bianco e nero) per poi invadere ogni domicilio e conquistare il pubblico con show sempre più presenti in ogni momento della giornata. Creando star e figure che tengono attaccati a quel piccolo schermo. Parlando di star, il cinema vede nuova luce. Non ci sono più i film solo tedeschi, ormai il mondo si è aperto ed il panorama si amplia tantissimo, portando la gente a svagarsi in quel "nuovo" modo. Ho parlato di radio, tv, cinema. Ma ci sono anche le riviste. Iniziano ad apparire queste copertine "frivole", ma dall'aspetto seducente, portando le donne a sognare carriere da modelle per potersi un giorno trovare su di esse ed iniziando un nuovo standard di bellezza, che vedremo cambiare sempre più rapidamente. Non ci sono solo le riviste, si vede tornare anche il giornalismo libero, qualcosa che era stato completamente distrutto in quegli anni bui di guerra. Si torna a parlare di politica e si può tornare ad esprimersi in merito, persino opporsi e ribellarsi, con proteste. Rifioriscono anche le librerie, portando di nuovo nelle case letture classiche ma anche novità. Il boom del benessere colpisce tutto ciò che incontra dopo i primi terribili anni, quando tutto era macerie. Vediamo crescere le cliniche private, dove il benessere è affiancato da "privilegi" e costi. Ci si trova anche medici che portano avanti professioni nuove, che iniziano a scavare ed approfondire il corpo umano. Cosa che ora diamo per scontato, ma che in quei tempi era novità. Portando anche la scoperta di malattie e cure, in modo da aiutare maggiormente chi ne ha bisogno. Insomma, questo solo un breve assaggio di cosa è scoppiato dagli anni '50. Questi esempi che ho riportato sono citati nel libro ed i nostri protagonisti si troveranno a doversi confrontare o anche a dover svolgere queste professioni, alcune prese dal passato e fatte evolvere, mentre altre spuntate improvvisamente e fiorite in un battito di ciglia.

Vi ricordo che oggi ci saranno altre tappe in cui si approfondiranno altre tematiche legate al romanzo. Non perdetevele!

Mandala

Mandala è un termine sanscriito che significa cerchio. Un mandala  è una rappreentazione geometrica del mondo e degli dèi, centrato intorno a un asse orientato. Si distingue dallo yantra, che è un diagramma, generalmente privo di immagini di divinità, più astratto e lineare del mandala. L'origine del mandala è molto antica. Lo sviluppo del mandala si situa soprattutto nell''epoca del buddhismo lamaico tibetano, in cui il buddhismo acquista una tonalità fortemente esoterica, come già nel IV secolo con il vajarayana del Grande Veicolo. Il mandala è allora il supporto operativo di un misticismo speculativo e di un ritualismo iniziatico. Se ne trova la presenza anche nel buddhismo esoterico giapponese, nella Cina prebuddhistica e in Mesopotamia, ma anche in Occidente nell'arte delle vetrate delle cattedrali, nell'allinemaneto dei monumenti sacrificali e nel piano orientato degli edifici a vocazione religiosa, per non parlare della stessa iconografia cristiana. La teoria e la pratica del mandala hanno dunque le loro radici in una predisposizione della natura umana a definire la sua appartenenza al cosmo attraverso la proiezione di immagini e di simboli la cui organizzazione generale dipende dagli isomorfismi strutturali, dalla tecnica artistica e dalla specifica area geografica. Il mandala tantrico è costituito da un recinto esterno o 'barriera', o 'montagna' di fuoco, che sbarra l'accesso ai non iniziati, e da una cintura detta 'adamantina', che simboleggia la coscienza suprema e lo stato di illuminazione del bodhi. Seguono uno o più cerchi concentrici, eventualmente con otto 'cimiteri' (otto ciircoletti disposti nei quattro punti cardinali e nei quattro punti sencondari), che simboleggiano gli otto aspetti della coscienza disintegrata. Compare un quadrato diviso in triangoli dell'intersezione di sei diagonali: al centro il cerchio che racchiude le divinità, degli emblemi, il cuore stesso dedl mandala, sede della divinità per eccellenza; su ciascun lato  del quadrato si apre una porta cardinale, difes da immagini terrificanti denominate 'guuardiani delle porte'. Questi guardiani, insieme con le 'divinità terribili', sottolineano il carattere iniziatico della penetrazione del mandala. Esso si rivela un cosmogramma oltre che uno psicodramma. In questo cosmoogramma, è una proiezione del cielo sulla terra, 'superficie consacrata', magnetizzata dal sacro; nel punto centrale del mandala la dimensione del tempo si converte in quella della trascendenza e dell'eternità. Il mandala è un prodotto e un supporto della meditazione, comunque espressione guida interiore di un itinerario spirituale. I cerchi, le porte, sono tanto le tappe dell'iniziazione quanto i livelli dell'essere. La contemplazione del mandala aiuta qundi a raggiungere l'esperienza dell'integrazione, a esser riassorbiti dall'Uno o dal vuoto attraverso la riscoperta delle potenze, in noi e fuori di noi. Il mandala, fornisce l'architettura del Sé ela presa delle figure immaginarie delle diverse istanze di smembramento e di sviluppo dell'Unità. La struttura del mandala è l'architettura dell'inconscio dell'Uomo, riscoprirla permette di identificare le tenebre; nominare e risvegliare quei livelli di coscienza provoca l'esperienza liberatrice. Il mandala è il cammino, in uno spazio qualitativamente differente, una teofania a ritroso. L'avanzata verso il centro, di cui la circumambulazione di tutti i pellegrinaggi è la tradizione rituale, è il ritorno all'altare interiore in cui si fa l'invocazione e di realizza il Sé. La lettura corretta del mandala conduce alla liberazione del potenziale energetico tanto del mondo fenomenico delle Maya quanto di quello delle divinità, e alla loro reintegrazione, alla loro riconversione del vuoto originario. così M. Eliade riiassume l'uso del mandala da parte del discepolo: <<...In altri termini, egli 'realizza' il processo eterno della creazione e della distruzione periodica del mondo, quello che gli permette di penetrare nei ritmi del Grande tempo cosmicoe di comprenderne il vuoto...E' il grande mistero del buddhismo mahayanico e tantrico, il 'rovesciamento totale', la trasmutazione del Samsara in assoluto...>>. Il metodo è quello stesso dell'alchimia spirituale: si tratta di trasmutare la cosscienza individuale dei fenmeni in coscienza universale dell'unità dell'energia cosmica. La realizzazione della Grande Opera si fa nel corpo umano, quest'altro mandala in cui è riassunto tutto il sistema di corrispondenze tra dèi, uomini e mondo. Il corpo ha un asse, il canale centrale del Sushumna, e un ounto in cui si realizza la trascendenza, il Saahasrara, o 'loto dei mille petali'. Il mandala da realizzare in se stessi altro non è che il compimento del Sè, attraverso la dissoluzione delle apparenze e la reintegrazione del principio. C.G. Jung fa un accostamento tra lo scopo e la funzione spirituali dei mandala tradizionali  ecerti mandala da lui scoperti nel corso della sua pratica analitica, esaminando i segni e la vita psichica dei suoi pazienti. E' così indotto a comparare il processo alchemico della costruzione di Sé con i processi inconsci della psiche, a generlizzare e universalizzare ssul piano della natura umana quello che altrimenti rimanderebbe solo a una pratica rituale del Darshana tantrico, C.G. Jung ha rivelato l'esistenza di 'mandala moderni' accanto ai  'mandala tradizionali', che rappresentano tutti <<una struttura di quell'ordine che è una rappresentazione simbolica del nucleo originale della psiche, la cui essenza ci è ignota>>. Lo scopo del mandala è duplice: stabilisce un ordine, o lo conserva; favorisce la creazione, dando forma a ciò che ancora non è. Conribuisce a dare espressione al simbolismo inconscio dei miti che struttura le nostre motivazioni, e attraverso ciò favorisce il processo di individuazione; si tratta secondo Marie Louise von Franz della 'esperienza soggettiva', dell'<<intervento attivo e creativo di una forza superpersonale>>, del sentimento che <<l'inconscio ci guida in accordo a un disegno segreto>>, un accordo realizzato tra il nucleo o centro della psiche e l'Io del paziente. Nella patologia mentale, il mandala, secondo M. Eliade, non è più di un'<<imitazione scimmiesca>>. La presenza del mandala nel racconto dei sogni dei pazienti mostra molto bene la sua funzione essenziale: esso è il rivelatore della problematica di un soggetto che non riesce a coincidere con il suo centro. <<Un mandala moderno>> dice C.G, Jung <<è una confessione involontaria  di uno stato mentale e spirituale>>. L'interesse del recupereo psicoanalitico junghiano della funzione iniziatica dei mandala sta nel rivelare la funzione terapeutica di un processo di consocenza del Sé che supera gli stretti limiti  di un rito di una detta corrente o di una data terapia, stabilendo un collegamento tra il processo iniziatico orientale e  l'idea occidentale di psicoterapia, e offendo al tempo stesso il materiale e lo spirito di una psicagogia dell'uomo totale. Quali che siano le riserve che si ha il diritto di esprimre a proposito del parallelismo delle definizioni proposte per i mandala 'moderni' e 'tradizionali', dal loro ruolo nella cura e nell'iniziazione, non resta meno vero che le analisi di C.G. Jung  permettono di articolare conoscenza di sé e iniziazione, mediante il riferimento obbligato a un simbolismo esoterico che sottende universalmente l'intero campo delle produzioni oniriche, religiose e artistiche della psiche, a prescindere dall'orientamento confessionale specifico. La consocenza di sé ha per principio un significato eminentemente religioso nel lato dell'espressione. <<Cose del genere non possono essere inventate...esse devono risorgere nuvamente da profondità dimenticate, per esprimere le intenzioni più profonde della coscienza e le più alte intenzioni dello spirito, unendo così il carattere unico della coscienza moderna al passato millenario dell'umanità>>.

Born March 18, 1917, in Hickory, NC, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Osborne Deal and Mary Ella Butler Deal and widow of Paul Leonard Davis. A graduate of Spartanburg High School, Mrs. Davis was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for more than 50 years. Trump’s wiretap outburst dismissed as ‘simply false’ by Obama spokesman

Obama statement says accusations in series of tweets are simply false while conservative media claims former president is undermining Trump

Without citing evidence, Donald Trump on Saturday accused Barack Obama of a Watergate-style wire tapping of his offices in New York before the US presidential election, a move critics dismissed as an attempt to deflect attention from investigations of his ties to Russia.

A spokesman for Obama said the accusation was simply false.

The unprecedented attack by a president on his predecessor, made in a series of early morning tweets, stoked speculation that Trumps remarks were prompted by stories circulating in rightwing media, including one that claimed Obama is attempting a silent coup against Trump.

The president this week endured another avalanche of revelations about his associates contacts with Russia. Most damagingly it emerged that his attorney general, former Alabama senator Jeff Sessions, failed to tell senators about two meetings with the Russian ambassador to the US last year.

Last month the national security adviser, Michael Flynn, was forced to resign over conversations with the ambassador and misleading statements about them to the vice-president, Mike Pence.

Earlier this year US intelligence agencies reported that Russia interfered in the election to help Trump, who has repeatedly proven reluctant to publicly criticise Vladimir Putin.

On Saturday, the president launched a series of tweets that began at 5.35am. In one he wrote: Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my wires tapped in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!

He followed up with a string of tweets in the next half-hour that claimed Obama had defied a court rejection to tap his office, and invited a good lawyer to make a case against the alleged process.

The president then compared the alleged surveillance of his communications to Watergate the scandal in which a 1972 break-in at Democratic National Committee headquarters led to revelation of crime and cover-up at the highest level of government and, ultimately, the resignation of Richard Nixon.

How low has President Obama gone to tapp [sic] my phones during the very sacred election process, Trump tweeted. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!

Obamas former deputy national security adviser, Ben Rhodes, tweeted back at Trump: No president can order a wiretap. Those restrictions were put in place to protect citizens from people like you.

Later an Obama spokesman, Kevin Lewis, issued a statement that did not deny there was a wiretapping but did deny that Obama ordered one.

A cardinal rule of the Obama administration was that no White House official ever interfered with any independent investigation led by the Department of Justice, the statement said.

As part of that practice, neither President Obama nor any White House official ever ordered surveillance on any US citizen. Any suggestion otherwise is simply false.

No evidence was provided to substantiate the presidents claims that Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower, and it was not clear on what information Trump was basing his allegations.

A US official told the Guardian there was no evidence to support that claim of Obama ordering Trump to be wiretapped.

Just before last Novembers election, the British former MP and novelist Louise Mensch reported that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (Fisa) court had granted a warrant to enable the FBI to conduct surveillance of US persons in an investigation of possible contacts between Russian banks and the Trump Organization.

Two months later the BBC published an article backing up Menschs original story about the Fisa court warrant issued in October to allow the justice department to scrutinise transfers and communications between Trump associates and Russian banks. US intelligence agencies were investigating the link, it added.

The Guardian reported in January that the Fisa court had turned down an application, asking the FBI to narrow the terms of inquiry.

The issue resurfaced this week in rightwing media, which Trump and Steve Bannon, his chief strategist and former head of far right Breitbart News, are known to follow closely.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin made claims on his Thursday night show about the alleged steps taken by the Obama administration to undermine Trumps campaign to win the White House. Levin called the effort a silent coup by the Obama administration and said this, rather than Trumps Russian ties, should be the subject of a congressional investigation.

Levins comments were then summarised by Breitbart News, in a report that also made reference to the Fisa warrant reported by Mensch and the BBC.

On Saturday, Robert Costa, a Washington Post reporter, tweeted: Per an official, Ive confirmed that several people at the White House have been circulating this Breitbart story. On Friday night and Saturday, Fox News hosts whom Trump is known to watch also remarked on the issue, with presenter Sean Hannity tweeting: What did OBAMA know and when did he know it??

On Friday, Trump similarly tried to tar Democrats in Congress who had criticized him, with tweets attempting to link top Democrats Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi to Moscow.

Gwenda Blair, a Trump biographer, said Trumps tweets were part of the distraction playbook.

What took him so long? Its like muscle memory for him, she said.

Democratic congressman Seth Moulton said the tweets were right out of Donald Trumps reality TV playbook.

Hes trying to distract attention from the real story here which is his campaign, his administrations contact with Russian officials, Moulton told MSNBC. Theres clearly a deeper story here and we the American people need to know how high this conspiracy goes.

Moulton, a member of the House armed services and budget committees, added: Obviously contacts with Russian intelligence officials are monitored: thats part of maintaining our national security.

A surveillance operation would require a federal judges approval, based on evidence presented. Moulton noted that US agencies routinely monitor Russians with government links.

If under the Obama administration they were simply monitoring contacts with Russian officials, he said, not trying to wiretap into the Trump campaign but simply looking at who Russian officials were talking with, and then Trump campaign officials got ensnared in that net, then its a total mischaracterisation to say President Obama was wiretapping Trump.

In the past Trump peddled conspiracy theories, most famously the baseless claim that Obama was not born in the US. However, the two men spoke several times during the presidential transition, in conversations Obama called cordial, while Trump claimed that Obama likes him.

The mood has soured in recent days. Speaking on Fox News, Trump blamed his predecessor for recent protests and leaks. I think President Obamas behind it, because his people are certainly behind it, he said.

Spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, Trump also made efforts to defend Sessions over his meetings with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. He tweeted: The first meeting Jeff Sessions had with the Russian [ambassador] was set up by the Obama Administration under education program for 100 [ambassadors].

He added: Just out: the same Russian ambassador that met Jeff Sessions visited the Obama White House 22 times, and 4 times last year alone.

Ambassadors frequently visit the White House, and under Obama the White House publicly reported most visitors.

On Friday, Sessions recused himself from investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election, despite backing from Trump, who described the controversy as a total witch hunt.

The president, suffering record low approval ratings, had hoped to rebuild his reputation this week with an address to a joint session of Congress. That speech struck a more restrained tone than Trumps usual public remarks, and the president declared the time for trivial fights is over.

But that political capital was quickly lost when the Sessions controversy erupted and restored over the administration a cloud of accusations about Kremlin links.

An hour after his blast at Obama, Trump returned to more trivial matters on Twitter. The former host of the reality TV show The Apprentice commented on his successors decision to quit.

Arnold Schwarzenegger isnt voluntarily leaving the Apprentice, Trump wrote. He was fired by his bad (pathetic) ratings, not by me. Sad end to great show.
