The priest paused after finishing a prayer, looked at someone off to his side and scratched his forehead.
“We had something happen,” he told the congregation.
The Rev. Joseph Crowley paused again, video shows.
“It’s hard to say, actually,” he added.
What happened, some at the Connecticut parish now say, was a miracle: During Communion, a bowl holding the hosts — the wafers that Catholicism teaches are transformed into Jesus Christ’s body during the Mass — began to run out. And yet, Crowley said, the bowl never emptied.
The possibility that the receptacle may have refilled itself during a March 5 service has kindled fascination among the faithful. It has also inspired the Archdiocese of Hartford to launch an investigation, which has since been sent to the highest echelons of the church hierarchy for review. If the Vatican finds that the reported increase in Communion hosts defies rational or scientific explanation, the conclusion could bolster Catholics’ belief in the teaching that the sacramental wafers literally become Jesus.
The probe could take months or years, so the parishioners of St. Thomas Church are relying for now on the proclamation of their pastor. Standing before his congregation in the 7,400-person town of Thomaston, Conn., Crowley said the reported miracle was evidence that God provides.
“Very powerful, very awesome, very real, very shocking — but also, it happens. It happens,” he said moments after the incident. “And today, it happened.”
The multiplication of hosts, if verified, would bolster efforts by the U.S. bishops to renew Catholics’ belief in the “daily miracle” of the wafers becoming Jesus’s body during the Mass, the archdiocese said.
“Through the centuries this daily miracle has sometimes been confirmed by extraordinary signs from Heaven, but the Church is always careful to investigate reports of such signs with caution, lest credence is given to something that proves to be unfounded,” the archdiocese said in a statement.
Ken Santopietro, a religious education teacher at St. Thomas, attended the Mass where the potential miracle occurred and was interviewed by representatives of the archdiocese. He recalled telling them that the people distributing Communion huddled with the priest afterward as if something unusual were happening.
Moments later, Crowley announced that the hosts had multiplied.
“I immediately believed in what he said he saw because of the reaction of not only him, but because of the group of people who were there — his ministers,” said Santopietro, who directs the Connecticut Catholic Men’s Conference. “I immediately believed in what he said he saw because of the reaction of not only him, but because of the group of people who were there — his ministers.” Ken Santopietro, worshiper
Miracles are foundational to Catholicism, which teaches that Jesus was God in human form, worked miracles during his life and then died for humanity’s sins before rising from the dead. As the church defines it, a miracle is a sign or wonder that can only be attributed to God — “a glimpse into heaven,” said the Rev. Dorian Llywelyn, incoming director of the Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University.
When the church acknowledges a miracle, believers flock to the site to see evidence and reinvigorate their faith. Millions of Catholics each year travel to Fátima, Portugal, and Lourdes, France — both places where the Virgin Mary has reportedly appeared to people — among other locations.
St. Thomas would probably also attract visitors if it were declared the site of a miracle, said Michael O’Neill, author of “Science and the Miraculous: How the Church Investigates the Supernatural.” If the Vatican finds the multiplication claim to be credible, he said, they would encourage the church to display the leftover hosts in a small shrine.
The parish distributed some of the remaining wafers after the occurrence but saved others, Crowley told his congregation. He did not respond to an interview request from The Washington Post.
For the Catholic Church, investigating a supposed miracle is a rigorous process that often solicits input from scientists, doctors and other experts in their fields. The church relies on the technology available at the time, and experts said some occurrences deemed miracles years ago might not be understood that way if they were investigated today.
In Connecticut, the case of the multiplying hosts has parallels to the biblical story of loaves and fishes, in which Jesus is said to have used five loaves of bread and two fish to feed 5,000 men. The probe probably centers on the testimony and credibility of witnesses — the person distributing Communion from that bowl and anyone else who may have seen what happened.
Church officials will be interested in whether some could have refilled the receptacle without the distributor noticing or whether that person may have not seen how many hosts were there in the first place, Llywelyn said. They will try to ensure that any witnesses are of sound mind and not seeking publicity.
Church officials may also review any available video and test the remaining wafers for differences in composition between them and other Communion hosts, O’Neill said.
The Archdiocese of Hartford was the first to investigate the potential miracle; whether it drew a conclusion is unclear. Elliott told the Catholic publication OSV News that the probe was led by the archdiocesan judicial vicar, who is tasked with judging spiritual matters. Dioceses will draw from their communities if they need people with specific expertise to help with an investigation, O’Neill said.
The Vatican’s department for doctrine and matters of belief, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, is reviewing the Hartford archdiocese’s investigation. They will involve theologians and canon lawyers — people with expertise in internal church law — in discussing the archdiocese’s reports and mulling whether rational explanations have been thoroughly considered, Llywelyn said.
Experts who testify about possible miracles before the Vatican are paid for their time, said hematologist and historian Jacalyn Duffin, who was questioned by church representatives about a potential miracle in the 1980s. Additional scholars are also brought in to offer feedback on experts’ testimony. Firsthand witnesses are not paid, since money could bias their testimony.
“At one level, there’s a hope that this will be an attested miracle, so there’s a degree of emotional involvement in that,” Llywelyn said. “The canonical process wants to take a step back from that fervor and not to get swayed by emotion, even good emotion.” “At one level, there’s a hope that this will be an attested miracle. … The canonical process wants to take a step back from that fervor and not to get swayed by emotion, even good emotion.” The Rev. Dorian Llywelyn, incoming director of the Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Loyola Marymount University.
The Vatican ultimately will advise the Archdiocese of Hartford about whether it considers the possible multiplication of hosts definitely, maybe or absolutely not a miracle. The local bishop will then make and announce a final decision.
Even if the church decides that the event has a rational explanation, Catholics are free to believe personally that it was a miracle. Conversely, Catholics are not obligated to believe it was a miracle if the bishop declares it.
“Even in the most famous cases of modern miracles, you can walk away and ignore them if you find them annoying or distracting,” O’Neill said. These Black and White churches began worshiping together during the pandemic and haven’t stopped
The Vatican questioned Duffin, the hematologist, about a potential miracle when the church was considering canonizing Marguerite d’Youville, who later became the first Canadian-born saint. Duffin recalled church officials asking her how a patient with aggressive acute leukemia had gone into remission after relapsing — then a virtually unheard of outcome.
The church representatives seemed wary of seeing a miracle where one might not exist, Duffin said. Still, she told them she could not think of a scientific reason for the patient’s survival.
“They wanted me to explain it,” said Duffin, author of “Medical Miracles: Doctors, Saints and Healing in the Modern World.” “And that really impressed me because I was naive about what the church did when it looks at these kinds of things. They are quite open to scientific explanation.”
Other types of miracles involve apparitions, stigmata — wounds that appear on parts of the body corresponding with the crucifixion of Jesus — and corpses that are said to be incorruptible, meaning they don’t decay as expected. In Missouri, pilgrims are converging on a monastery for religious sisters as word has spread that the exhumed remains of the order’s founder appear to have been miraculously preserved.
The church has recognized roughly 100 miracles involving Communion throughout its history, said O’Neill, who maintains a database of miracles acknowledged by the church. None have involved multiplying hosts, nor have any happened in the United States.
In some instances that the church has found credible, Communion hosts appear to bleed or develop an image resembling Jesus crowned with thorns. The church has deemed miracle claims unfounded in other cases, including when a red substance that appeared on a host in Utah was determined to be mold.
Some have speculated that the potential miracle in Connecticut could bolster the sainthood cause of Michael McGivney, a 19th-century pastor at St. Thomas and founder of the Catholic fraternal service organization Knights of Columbus. Another miracle attributed to him would precipitate his canonization.
Communion miracles, however, are infrequently relied upon in canonization efforts because the ease of comparing medical records from before and after makes healing miracles simpler to investigate. Attributing the possible Connecticut miracle to McGivney also would require someone to have prayed to him for something of its kind to happen.
Crowley told his congregation that neither he nor the person who distributed Communion had been praying for a multiplication of hosts. He asked his parishioners to tell him if they had been asking McGivney for help.
“Maybe Blessed McGivney interceded for us and God allowed this big thing to take place and to be made visible, to be made known,” Crowley said.
The Knights of Columbus, which pushes for sainthood for McGivney, did not respond to requests for comment on whether they might cite the occurrence at St. Thomas in their advocacy.
To some, whether the alleged multiplication is deemed a miracle is only important insofar as it strengthens people’s faith. Llywelyn said whether there’s a rational explanation for the apparent increase in Communion hosts is less important to him than whether people are more loving, tolerant and interested in justice because they believe the occurrence was a miracle.
“I’m not dissing the materiality, because the increase in faith has to be based in something,” Llywelyn said. “But I’m as interested, if not more interested, in the aftereffects.”

Hindu temple in closed N.Y. church raises questions
A parish in the Diocese of Rochester sold a closed Catholic church this January to the Bhakti Marga Hindu movement, to be renovated into the first U.S. temple of the Hindu group.
Tumblr media
After renovation, the church will be used for Hindu worship, and will include iconography of Hindu deities and other Hindu religious symbols alongside the Catholic religious symbols already in the building. The group will also display a parish statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary alongside a Hindu goddess on the property.
The conversion of a Catholic church into a space for Hindu worship raises questions about the canonical relegation of the church to “profane,” or non-Catholic, use, and about its sale to a non-Catholic religious organization.
The Diocese of Rochester, New York, announced Nov. 6, 2021, that Our Lady of Lourdes Church in nearby Elmira would be relegated to profane use, a technical term in canon law, effective Nov. 15.
“Once a church is relegated it is no longer used for Catholic liturgies and can be put up for sale.  We will remove all sacred objects as well as other items that may be useful in carrying out the mission of the parish,” the diocese said in its announcement.
Bhakti Marga purchased Our Lady of Lourdes in January. Days after the purchase, the group announced plans to turn the property, which includes the church building and a convent, into an ashram, or spiritual hermitage.
Tumblr media
The church itself will become a Hindu temple, Bhakti Marga explained.
“This ashram is, or was, a church dedicated to Mother Mary of Lourdes, and it was a convent for some nuns. So it’s beautiful that we will be able to build on the spirituality, and the love, and the grace that was already there,” Bhakti Marga’s Swami Tulsidas announced in a January YouTube video.
youtube
Tulsidas explained that the space will feature a tall icon of Narasimha, a man-lion avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, in what was once the church’s sanctuary, along with icons of other Hindu religious figures.
Tumblr media
“We’re going to honor the past by keeping the stained glass windows, and I am so happy to say that the Catholic Church has let us keep the main Mother Mary,” Tulsidas added.
A large statue of Our Lady of Lourdes will be “placed with Kali in the residence way,” the former convent for religious sisters on the property, the swami said.
Kali is the Hindu goddess of death.
Tumblr media
The worship space will also hold more than 1,000 saligrams, which in are stones worshiped in Hinduism because they are believed to contain a manifestation of the god Vishnu.
Our Lady of Lourdes was a parish church until 2018, when three parishes in Elmira were merged into one, amid declining Mass attendance and revenues. But while the parishes were merged operationally into Holy Name of Jesus Parish, both the Our Lady of Lourdes and nearby Sts. Peter and Paul churches remained open as parish worship sites until their relegation to secular use in November 2021.
The renovation raises questions about the diocesan decision to sell the church to a non-Catholic religious group, and about the canonical process observed during its closure.
Canon law permits a diocesan bishop to relegate a church to “profane, but not sordid use” if it can no longer be used for sacred worship, is regarded as beyond repair, or if “other grave causes suggest [it] can no longer be used for divine worship.”
In order to close a parish church, the bishop must consult with his diocesan presbyteral council, and obtain the consent of the parish pastor.
Rochester Bishop Salvatore Matano said in his November announcement that he consulted Rochester’s presbyteral council Nov. 3, 2021, about the church closure.
But it is not clear whether Matano indicated to the presbyteral council that the building could be converted into a space for non-Christian worship which could be regarded as “sordid use” in canon law.
Profane use of a church building generally means it can be sold for a secular purpose: renovation into apartments, a restaurant, or retail space. But canon law prohibits a church to be sold or leased for “sordid” use, which is understood to mean sacrilegious, immoral, or scandalous purpose.
Canon law requires that the potential future use of a church building be considered when it is sold. Dioceses which closed a significant number of churches in recent years have developed vetting processes to ensure that a church building won’t be repurposed for offensive use after it is sold.
It is also not clear why the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary to be displayed alongside the goddess Kali was not removed from the church at the time other blessed and sacred objects were.
According to Tulsidas, the temple will be inaugurated when completed by guru Swami Vishwananda, Bhakti Marga’s leader.
Vishwananda, founder of Bhakti Marga movement, has faced allegations of sexual misconduct in Germany, and is a controversial figure in some Hindu traditions.
The Bhakti Marga movement, which claims to have 30 temples worldwide, regards Vishwananda as “the source of infinite grace.”
“He answers prayers and removes internal obstacles to a person’s spiritual progress,” according to the movement.
The Rochester diocese has not yet responded to The Pillar’s request for comment.

ExGlo Foundation, a Ghanaian NGO, has again scored another feat with another project undertaken.
New Post has been published on https://plugzafrica.com/exglo-foundation-a-ghanaian-ngo-has-again-scored-another-feat-with-another-project-undertaken/
ExGlo Foundation, a Ghanaian NGO, has again scored another feat with another project undertaken.
Early this year (2023), they selected 2 Regions out of their needs assessments; the Regions were the Upper East and Upper West Regions for skills training. Two institutions were chosen, Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ Senior High (Upper East) and Daffiama Senior High (Upper West).
These skills trainings in the selected schools were based solely on helping students develop income generating or entrepreneurial skills to enable them to attain some level of financial independence and economic empowerment. Stemming from Exglo Foundation’s prior needs assessments in these regions, they discovered in both institutions, that the majority of these students were more likely to venture into entrepreneurship to make a living for themselves after school. But there are little to no skill acquisition avenues in the school and the few existing ones are expensive and thus unaffordable. Hence, they are not able to pursue their entrepreneurial aspirations when they leave school.
“This is a major problem in our target regions and almost all the students involved, end up becoming delinquent and living reckless lives. In the case of the girls, the majority of them become pregnant a few months after coming out of school with no financial support for themselves and their kids,” says ExGlo Foundation, in a communiqué.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS. (SKILL TRAINING DEVELOPMENT 2023) 1. Skill development training at Daffiama Senior High School. 2. Skill development training at Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ Senior High School. ExGlo visited Daffiama Senior High School on the 28th day of April 2023 in the Upper West Region. Volunteers from ExGlo trained about 150 students in beadmaking/ jewellery and liquid soap. On the 29th day in April, the ExGlo foundation paid a visit to Our Lady of Lourdes Girls’ Senior High in the Upper East Region and trained about 150 students in making liquid and bar soaps. Visibly, all projects undertaken by ExGlo Foundation were completed successfully.
SOURCE OF FUNDING FOR THIS YEAR’S PROJECTS:
The key sponsors and collaborators for this year’s activities are the Management of St John’s Hospital and Fertility Centre, Tantra Hill Roundabout, Accra, as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility and Best Western Premier, Accra Airport Hotel. Other contributors included Mr. Michael Sandow Ali (Chairman Of The Board), Prof. Joshua Y. Abor (Board Member), Hon. Ayew Afriyie (Effiduase/Asokore Constituency, Ashanti Region), Dr Celestina Allotey (Vice President of Sustainability for Gold Fields Ghana Limited), Ms. Yvonne Ehchill, Mr. Fiifi Enchill, Pastor Stephen Mwinkaara, Mr. Samuel Frank Osei, Prof. Kobby Mensah, Ms Agnes Tanye and other family and friends. We are grateful to all our patrons, sponsors and contributors for helping us teach these students. God continue to bless all abundantly for your kind gestures.
 APPRECIATION The foundation would like to thank our hardworking volunteers who helped to make these projects successful. The team was led by Ms Nancy Abena Manko, the project manager for the foundation with oversight provided by the Executive Director, Dr Patience Aseweh Abor. Our volunteers for this year’s projects were;
Ms Jennifer Yaa Andorful Wilson Mr Moses Quarshie Nana Tawiah Gaisie Ms Priscilla Wiah Ms Amina Kassim Ms Abuu Belinda Ms Alice Atuligiya Ms Saani Rufiatu Ms Banning Mujeeba
Ms Mahama Amamata
Ms Kafari Dominica
Ms Matina Song-Aaba
Ms Mensah Gloria Aba
The ExGlo Foundation has succeeded in training beneficiaries in our focused regions. However, there are issues of funding for both the foundation as well as beneficiaries, and general logistics for organising these projects in the rural communities. Complaints from the majority of the beneficiaries were on how to start a business with the skills they have acquired since they do not have any startup capital. Therefore, the foundation is appealing to the banking sector/financial institutions, other NGOs, corporate bodies etc to help provide funding for these new entrepreneurs. Thank you.

  About ExGlo Foundation
Since 2012, ExGlo Foundation has provided decent education, healthcare and sustainable livelihood projects to improve the lives of people in deprived rural areas across the poorest regions in Ghana, i.e., Central, Upper East, Upper West and Northern regions. For the past ten years, we have engaged in various projects, including covering the tuition fees of some brilliant students whose parents were not financially sound to cater for their children’s education. We made Stationeries, clothing and furniture available for students, teachers and community members in the focus regions. A good healthcare system increases the percentage of the attainment of success, hence, ExGlo has for many years, organized health talks and screening and first aid kits donations to our beneficiaries.
One of the surest ways of alleviating poverty is education and this is the mission of the ExGlo foundation as we facilitate teaching and learning in schools in deprived rural communities in the aforementioned regions. As one of our strategies for economic empowerment, ExGlo has in recent years been undertaking various skills training for both women in rural communities as well as students in Senior High schools. Membership of ExGlo is open to professionals, graduates, students, foundations, corporate bodies and generally anyone with the heart for community development and hands to reach out to the poor and vulnerable. Together we pledge to work towards the realization of the vision of the ExGlo foundation under the guidance of the rules and regulations of the organization.

Floriana is a locality where we find a considerable amount of places of interest. Historical and important buildings add to its cultural heritage value, gardens are in abundance as well as several beautiful monuments. And as expected, we also find a number of churches that keep alive the immense faith the Maltese people have in religion. Testament of this is the parish church of St. Publius - one of the nicest churches in Malta. The church reflects the passion, love and devotion of the Furjaniżi to God and Saint Publius, patron of Floriana and Malta. THE CHURCH OF OUR LADY OF LOURDES In Floriana we find other churches too. And this one, dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes, although the smallest place of worship in the city, is not only very pretty but also unique. DEVOTION TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES Following the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes, this small church was built in her honour and cared for by the Franciscan Capuchin friars. The church, today a cntre of Marian devotion, is built in front of their convent. At one point during the last war, they used this church to carry on their pastoral work after their convent was hit. THE UNIQUE GROTTO ALTAR What really adds to the uniqueness of this church is a small grotto with a statue of Our Lady and St. Bernadette situated behind the main altar. This grotto was constructed in a 'cave' similar to the one at Lourdes by Dominic Busuttil. is undoubtedly the main reason for the church’s popularity, as many devout pay visit, moreso during the months of the apparitions. Added to this is the peace that can be found here, proving ideal for spiritual reflection and prayer. Marriages are often held in this church. THE CHURCH’S HISTORY Before this church was built as we know it today, there existed a smaller chapel dedicated to St. Mary Magdalen Penitent built in 1706-1709 by the Knight Wolfgang Von Guttenberg, Baliff of Brandenburg. In the year 1881, at the onset of worldwide devotion to our Lady of Lourdes, Father Provincial Philip Anton from Valletta replaced the statue of the Magdalen with the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes that had been brought from France. In Thewatte, a little town outside of Colombo, there is a Roman Catholic basilica called Our Lady of Lanka. It is one of the most frequented Roman Catholic churches in the Colombo Archdiocese, and pilgrims from many different religious backgrounds go there. The unusual architecture of this basilica, which incorporates aspects of local culture, is one of its most distinctive features.
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮?
It's critical to comprehend the meaning of the word's origin for individuals who are unfamiliar with what a basilica is. The word "basilica" comes from the Roman language and was used to denote a substantial Roman public structure, often a court of law. The phrase developed to explicitly designate a sizable or significant church granted special ceremonial rituals by the Pope as Christianity spread across the Roman Empire, becoming the Roman Catholic Church. Currently, there are well over 1500 basilicas spread out around the globe. With the exception of a few great basilicas, all of them are minor basilicas.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘄𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗮
Our Lady of Lanka was founded in 1911 as a little chapel honoring France's Our Lady of Lourdes (Mary Immaculate). It was a part of the Ragama parish at the time and was constructed by the local priest, Fr. A. Kieger, and a few Catholic laymen. With the aid of some Catholic workers from Colombo, another pastor of the chapel, Fr. A. Collorec, had a grotto created for Our Lady of Lourdes years later in 1917. With time, more local Hindus and Buddhists began to attend the services, which increased the location's popularity. Due to this, the chapel was later converted into a church in the 1930s.

    or
Our Lady of Lourdes
    or
Saint Gobnait, Virgin.
Friday, Fifth Week in Ordinary Time
(Liturgical Colour: Green)
First Reading
1 Kings 11:29-32,12:19
Solomon is unfaithful; the Lord moderates his wrath.
One day when Jeroboam had gone out of Jerusalem, the prophet Ahijah of Shiloh accosted him on the road. Ahijah was wearing a new cloak; the two of them were in the open country by themselves. Ahijah took the new cloak he was wearing and tore it into twelve strips, saying to Jeroboam, ‘Take ten strips for yourself, for thus the Lord speaks, the God of Israel, “I am going to tear the kingdom from Solomon’s hand and give ten tribes to you. He shall keep one tribe for the sake of my servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.’
And Israel has been separated from the House of David until the present day.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 80(81):10-15
R/ I am the Lord your God: listen to my warning.
Let there be no foreign god among you,    no worship of an alien god. I am the Lord your God,    who brought you from the land of Egypt.
R/ I am the Lord your God: listen to my warning.
But my people did not heed my voice    and Israel would not obey, so I left them in their stubbornness of heart    to follow their own designs.
R/ I am the Lord your God: listen to my warning.
O that my people would heed me,    that Israel would walk in my ways! At once I would subdue their foes,    turn my hand against their enemies.
R/ I am the Lord your God: listen to my warning.
Gospel Acclamation
cf. John 6:63,68
Alleluia, alleluia! Your words are spirit, Lord, and they are life; you have the message of eternal life. Alleluia!
Or:
cf. Acts of the Apostles 16:14
Alleluia, alleluia! Open our heart, O Lord, to accept the words of your Son. Alleluia!
Gospel
Mark 7:31-37
'He makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak'.
Returning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, right through the Decapolis region. And they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man’s ears and touched his tongue with spittle. Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, ‘Ephphatha’, that is, ‘Be opened.’ And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. ‘He has done all things well,’ they said ‘he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.’
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Lady of Lourdes
(Liturgical Colour: White)
(Readings for the memorial)
(There is a choice today between the readings for the ferial day (Friday) and those for the memorial. The ferial readings are recommended unless pastoral reasons suggest otherwise)
First Reading
Isaiah 66:10-14
Towards Jerusalem I send flowing peace, like a river.
Rejoice, Jerusalem, be glad for her, all you who love her! Rejoice, rejoice for her, all you who mourned her!
That you may be suckled, filled, from her consoling breast, that you may savour with delight her glorious breasts.
For thus says the Lord: Now towards her I send flowing peace, like a river, and like a stream in spate the glory of the nations.
At her breast will her nurslings be carried and fondled in her lap. Like a son comforted by his mother will I comfort you. And by Jerusalem you will be comforted.
At the sight your heart will rejoice, and your bones flourish like the grass. To his servants the Lord will reveal his hand.
The Word of the Lord
R/ Thanks be to God.
Responsorial Psalm
Judith 13:18a-19
R/ You are the highest honour of our race!
May you be blessed, my daughter, by God Most High, beyond all women on earth; and may the Lord God be blessed, the Creator of heaven and earth.
R/ You are the highest honour of our race!
The trust you have shown shall not pass from the memories of men, but shall ever remind them of the power of God.
R/ You are the highest honour of our race!
Gospel Acclamation
cf. Luke 1:45
Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed is the Virgin Mary, who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled. Alleluia!
Gospel
John 2:1-11
'My hour has not come yet' - 'Do whatever he tells you'.
There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited. When they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the wedding was all finished, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ Jesus said ‘Woman, why turn to me? My hour has not come yet.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ There were six stone water jars standing there, meant for the ablutions that are customary among the Jews: each could hold twenty or thirty gallons. Jesus said to the servants, ‘Fill the jars with water’, and they filled them to the brim. ‘Draw some out now’ he told them ‘and take it to the steward.’ They did this; the steward tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from – only the servants who had drawn the water knew – the steward called the bridegroom and said, ‘People generally serve the best wine first, and keep the cheaper sort till the guests have had plenty to drink; but you have kept the best wine till now.’
This was the first of the signs given by Jesus: it was given at Cana in Galilee. He let his glory be seen, and his disciples believed in him.
The Gospel of the Lord
R/ Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Song of Songs 8:6-7
The flash of love is a flame of the Lord himself.
Set me like a seal on your heart, like a seal on your arm. For love is strong as Death, jealousy as relentless as Sheol. The flash of it is a flash of fire, a flame of the Lord himself. Love no floods can quench, no torrents drown.
Were a man to offer all the wealth of his house to buy love, contempt is all he would purchase.

Gospel
Matthew 19:3-12
Husband and wife are no longer two, but one body.
Some Pharisees approached Jesus, and to test him they said, ‘Is it against the Law for a man to divorce his wife on any pretext whatever?’ He answered, ‘Have you not read that the creator from the beginning made them male and female and that he said: This is why a man must leave father and mother, and cling to his wife, and the two become one body? They are no longer two, therefore, but one body. So then, what God has united, man must not divide.’
They said to him, ‘Then why did Moses command that a writ of dismissal should be given in cases of divorce?’ ‘It was because you were so unteachable’ he said ‘that Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but it was not like this from the beginning. Now I say this to you: the man who divorces his wife – I am not speaking of fornication – and marries another, is guilty of adultery.’
The disciples said to him, ‘If that is how things are between husband and wife, it is not advisable to marry.’ But he replied, ‘It is not everyone who can accept what I have said, but only those to whom it is granted. There are eunuchs born that way from their mother’s womb, there are eunuchs made so by men and there are eunuchs who have made themselves that way for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.’

The wise and foolish virgins.
Jesus told this parable to his disciples: ‘The kingdom of heaven will be like this: Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were sensible: the foolish ones did take their lamps, but they brought no oil, whereas the sensible ones took flasks of oil as well as their lamps. The bridegroom was late, and they all grew drowsy and fell asleep. But at midnight there was a cry, “The bridegroom is here! Go out and meet him.” At this, all those bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps, and the foolish ones said to the sensible ones, “Give us some of your oil: our lamps are going out.” But they replied, “There may not be enough for us and for you; you had better go to those who sell it and buy some for yourselves.” They had gone off to buy it when the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding hall and the door was closed. The other bridesmaids arrived later. “Lord, Lord,” they said “open the door for us.” But he replied, “I tell you solemnly, I do not know you.” So stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour.’

Luke 10:38-42
Martha works; Mary listens.
Jesus came to a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. She had a sister called Mary, who sat down at the Lord’s feet and listened to him speaking. Now Martha who was distracted with all the serving said, ‘Lord, do you not care that my sister is leaving me to do the serving all by myself? Please tell her to help me.’ But the Lord answered: ‘Martha, Martha,’ he said ‘you worry and fret about so many things, and yet few are needed, indeed only one. It is Mary who has chosen the better part; it is not to be taken from her.’
