There is a word for contagious concepts- it's a meme! If something is memetic it's an idea, pattern of behavior, etc that can spread from person to person.
yeah!!! I've read about memes as being a kind of living organism before, which I think is neat.
If this is about Lumpy Kiba, i'm talking about something that needs a more specific word for it—the phenomenon when a specific reference image becomes incredibly widespread in art to the point that you can notice it everywhere.
There's a post about a raccoon skull that became the reference image for untold numbers of wolf skull tattoos and art pieces because it was misidentified as a wolf.
This is something that also happens a LOT with horses. I live in Kentucky and especially in the Lexington area, every company logo has a horse in it, restaurants and shops have horses decorating their walls, and multiple times when I've been in that area i've looked at something and thought, "I've seen this horse before...."

The Anatomy of Lumpy Kiba
(and how to identify him in the wild)
disclaimer: this is not a wolf anatomy tutorial. it’s a tutorial on how to recognize the features of one specific wolf silhouette so you can get pretentiously annoyed about it. don’t take my advice about things.
also, don’t harass artists over this shit if you happen to see it. I shouldn’t have to say that but the internet’s favorite pastime now is spontaneously deciding to make some random civilian’s life miserable for a minor misstep and it’s a fucked up thing to do. yes plagiarism is bad but frankly while the original clipart was obviously traced, that ship sailed over a decade ago and I don’t blame everyone for using this wolf silhouette because you have to go out of your way to avoid it at this point if you’re searching for free clipart. this is meant to be funny and lighthearted.
now, with that out of the way.
nobody asked for this but I need something to occupy my brain and the notes aren’t really slowing down on that post (this is what I’m referencing btw) and I’ve seen a few people questioning my claims that it’s all the same wolf silhouette and that the original is a still from the anime Wolf’s Rain. I also really enjoy when people find this bastard in weird places and want to make it easier. so I’m doing that. in a style flagrantly stolen from mcmansionhell, which I think is fitting given the subject matter of shameless plagiarism. to start, here’s one of the cleanest/most exemplary instances I could find, broken down. There’s some variation in rotation, nose shape, and scruff distribution, but it all basically averages out to this:
Tumblr media
further analysis, examples, and deranged ranting under the cut!
not all of these details will be present in every instance of Lumpy Kiba (especially in smaller examples or jewelry where a lot of detail is lost), but more than 2-3 together with the same pose and you’ve got a set of weirdly specific anatomical issues that are unlikely to all occur naturally together unless someone is referencing an already badly-rendered wolf instead of a photo. The most consistent and noticeable feature of Lumpy Kiba is those hind legs, with their dangerously pointy hocks and very long and concave metatarsals, but the tail position, nose shape, and pronounced shoulder bump are also strong indicators.
for reference, here’s a photo of a real wolf in a similar pose. note the very rounded hocks and overall lack of lumps.
Tumblr media
when you find a wolf silhouette clipart that ISN’T Lumpy Kiba, it won’t necessarily have perfect anatomy but it will have a lot more in common with the photo, like this dude
Tumblr media
Wolves That Are Lumpy, But Not Kiba
stylizing is a thing though, and on rare occasions you WILL find a howling wolf silhouette that resembles neither a real wolf nor Lumpy Kiba. it was surprisingly hard to find ones that weren’t just “Lumpy Kiba but severely warped/altered” (I’ll get to those in a minute) but these were the two clearest examples I could find that are definitely not Lumpy Kiba or derived from him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there are of course more differences than what I’ve pointed out, but those were the key points I used to pick them out from the ‘howling wolf silhouette’ image search.
Weird/Hard To Identify Examples
in my digging around for example images for this post, I came across not only a staggering amount of Lumpy Kiba at every turn, but some that I initially thought were doing their own thing that, on further examination, were clearly referenced from Lumpy Kiba with some “you can copy my homework, but change it a little so the teacher doesn’t notice” slapped on. unfortunately the defining characteristics of Lumpy Kiba are so glaring and distinctive that if you use him as your only reference, it’s GOING to be noticeable. this, by the way, is why if you’re learning anatomy you NEED to reference photos (and real life if you can) instead of other peoples’ drawings. everyone stylizes, everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and weird things happen when you just copy another artist instead of actually learning what an animal looks like.
(this, incidentally, is the whole problem with Lumpy Kiba in the first place, but I’ll get to that)
here’s two that most likely weren’t traced, but the artist definitely referenced Lumpy Kiba exclusively
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also two particularly weird examples that barely qualify as Lumpy Kiba, but which both were undeniably shaped by his influence. the first one being this unholy frankenwolf that uses components from Lumpy Kiba but also apparently a few other wolf silhouettes:
Tumblr media
and if you thought we were done with that youtuber “tribal wolf tattoo” guy, I found someone who made a truly next-level copy of his slightly distorted trace of a moderately shitty vector of an anime screenshot. even after that game of visual telephone, the Lumpy Kiba telltale signs are still present. if anything, they’re in their purest form here, because not one single person in this chain ever looked at a photo of an actual wolf.

Lumpy Kiba spotted in the movie "Thor : God of Thunder" / "Thor : God's Fury". I don't know if it counts, but as CGI wolves go, that one is awful.

Loved the Wolf's Raid video. It was a real blast of nostalgia. Out of curiosity, have you seen the post about Lumpy Kiba, a specific traced silhouette of Kiba that has become a popular piece of clipart? I feel like you would get a kick out of it.
LMAO??? No I have not?? HAHA
(also thank youuuu)

Lumpy Kiba Part 2: Origins
I just wanted to also address this real quick because a few people have insisted that Lumpy Kiba predates Wolf’s Rain and I don’t personally believe that’s the case.
even more deranged ranting under the cut!
Firstly, I was a teenager when Wolf’s Rain came out and was first popular, and to the best of my memory I only ever saw that silhouette in Wolf’s Rain fan content until later (it made a slight detour through the broader wolfaboo community before taking over clipart repositories everywhere, but obviously it broke containment in short order). I had Lumpy Kiba as my desktop background (on my user account on the Family Computer) for a while. Howling wolf silhouettes have been a thing since forever, of course, but I was obsessed with wolves and I don’t remember seeing much of Lumpy Kiba specifically until more recently.
Secondly, that opening sequence wolf is animated. I know an animation frame can be traced but that seems unlikely in an anime that is entirely about wolves. one assumes the people involved knew how to draw them without tracing.
Thirdly, the anime still is the only place where the wolf silhouette actually... looks good. It’s significantly higher in quality than the clipart and traces that followed, and includes shading and detail that Lumpy Kiba never does. The anatomy, while a bit wonky, makes sense with the way wolves are drawn in the anime.
Tumblr media
It matches the style of the anime in the way it’s constructed and the way it moves. Here’s another still from it, of another wolf on a cliff with its head up (though this one is throwing someone else off a cliff. don’t worry about it)
Tumblr media
wheeee
anyway, the wolf in this shot clearly has a different silhouette from Lumpy Kiba or Original Kiba, but a lot of the stylistic quirks (prominent wrist bumps that you can also see on the background wolf, concave back, long upper foreleg that extends down off the chest, long metatarsals, skinny waist) are the same, and consistent in a lot of scenes.
you can see the stylistic quirks in other places too, like the end credit sequence where elements of the wolf’s outline are exaggerated compared to a real one (also that tiny waist again). this isn’t a bad choice, and it works well in the anime where the artists clearly know what a wolf looks like and are choosing what to exaggerate. the lumps emphasize the wolfiness instead of obscuring it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
there’s also the particular posture and conformation of Lumpy Kiba that’s rarely seen in silhouettes that aren’t derived from it, but seen constantly in wolf’s rain. real wolves have somewhat narrow chests and stand with their forepaws fairly close together most of the time. a lot of non-Lumpy Kiba clipart reflects this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
but wolves in Wolf’s Rain tend to have broad chests and a wide, square stance that’s congruous with the silhouette from whence Lumpy Kiba came but not that typical in real wolves. they have a stiff, boxy sort of look and movement to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the anime, it looks fine. but it makes Lumpy Kiba stand out because not only is he based on a pretty stylized wolf, a lot of elements that look fine in a few frames in an anime with shading and a cohesive art style around it (the pointy hocks and butt bump, for example) end up weirdly exaggerated in the clipart because whoever traced it was just following the lines they saw instead of considering actual wolf anatomy, so the quirks are both exaggerated by the process, and taken out of context.
my theory as to why people believe they’ve seen that same silhouette predating Wolf’s Rain is the same reason the Mandela effect and that dude who allegedly appears in everyone’s dreams are a thing: human perception and memory is flawed, howling wolves are an incredibly popular motif, and at this point Lumpy Kiba is so pervasive that that’s what most people probably picture when they think of a howling wolf silhouette, especially if they don’t know that it’s all the same wolf. there are also a lot of weirdly stylized wolf cliparts out there, and unless you’re me and have been holding a grudge about this specific thing for the last fifteen years, there is very little reason for your brain to have a dedicated “every distinct wolf silhouette I’ve seen on a tshirt in that weird crystals-swords-and-holographic-horse-print shop at the mall” section in its memory.
it’s certainly possible that Wolf’s Rain traced (and improved) a clipart that already existed for one specific frame for some reason, but for now I’m gonna continue my assumption that Kiba is indeed its origin.
