2019 Machu Picchu Access Regulations
The Peruvian government has changed the regulations to enter Machu Picchu; these new rules begin January 1, 2019. The Minister of Tourism, Rogers Valencia, has announced these new rules to improve the tourists’ experience, reduce the waiting time to access the site, and better preserve the citadel.
The main changes are listed below:
Visits are limited to a maximum of 4 hours and all travelers must leave the site no later than 5:00pm.
Travelers must buy a registered ticket which allows them to enter the site at a specific time. It is important to know that travelers are not allowed to enter the site before the time shown on their ticket. See table below for available options and prices.
Travelers must access the site with a tour guide in a group no larger than 16 people. Your guide will register at the entrance gate each traveler who will access the site with him/her.
If you are planning a visit to Machu Picchu, it is highly recommended to book your ticket in advance since there is a limit on the number of people allowed to access the site every day. Specifically, the Peruvian government allows the access of 3500 travelers to the main circuit, 400 travelers to Huayna Picchu Mountain, and 800 travelers to Machu Picchu Mountain. Tickets for Huayna Picchu are usually booked a couple of months in advance.
Also, travelers should be aware of some restrictions when accessing the site. For instances, travelers cannot leave and re-enter the site (unless there is an emergency). In addition, travelers cannot enter the site with a tripod or monopod, selfie sticks, backpacks bigger than 40x35x20cms, alcohol, aerosols, drugs, musical instruments, recyclable plastic bottles, food, musical instruments, strollers or buggies, and/or high heel shoes.
Travelers will find several options to book just the ticket to Machu Picchu or a more comprehensive tour package. Just keep in mind that there are several ways to get to Machu Picchu and it is up to you to make your visit to Machu Picchu a true adventure which will fit your needs and preferences.

Notes:
Prices have been calculated based on a rate exchange of USD 1.00 for S/. 3.34 (Soles).
Foreign students with a valid student ID and school children get a discount of about 50% for the Citadel tickets and about 30% for the rest of the tickets.
