Magia Day 2023: A Summary!
Iroha & Tsuruno event! They will be getting new outfits soon so we can expect a duo unit!
Edit 1: There was no announcement of a dual unit or a new event. But I believe they will be having a dual unit soon, because both VAs talked about Iroha & Tsuruno's relationship, the amount of alt units each of them got so far, and they said they would be getting new costumes soon.
Scene 0 is getting an anime adaptation from 03.10! Aki Mabayu's VA is the same as Oriko's!
Edit 2: I misunderstood the announcement and there won't be an anime adaptation. We are getting scene 0 in game, most likely as a new arc. But the part about VA is correct. Oriko's VA will also be voicing Aki Mabayu.
The project is supposed to be a prologue to Madoka anime. Aki's existence got deleted for some reason, and they will explore that.
Aki's VA mentioned this character has a lot of monologues. She looks like a socially awkyard character.
I love the fact that Aki has so many outfits!
Seika and Reira are finally getting uncapped!
We are also getting stuff like 3x speed in mirrors, another innocent gem + overlimiter core, hospital outfits for Magius + Karin and at least 250 Magia stones for Magia day campaign!
I enjoyed this event, but I wish they had shown us the upcoming units like previous years. And I also regret breaking my wallet for Takina. Especially because I didn't think Aki would arrive so soon 🤦

Also I should probably talk about the magireco news at some point
we're getting a MasaKoko wedding rerun and the announcement of two kimochis: Alina Eve and Nutcracker Witch. IIRC both of these are void? Which is kind of an odd choice imo. I know that there are going to be different mechanics but still, it feels a little odd to have them back to back like that.
This might be the first month we get with no new unit release, which feels really weird. I'm genuinely unsure if that's ever happened before. The only reason I noticed is because I've been able to get one new unit every month and this might break my streak since playing on JP almost four years ago (yes yes shame me for being a whale, it's fine).
I'm not going to go all doom and gloom, but it still feels a little sad. We're in the twilight era of the game I suppose. I mean, we have been for a while, but still.
Vivi on discord pointed out that there's one unaccounted for week inside March so it's possible that we might get something neat in there, but I'm unsure. Also, it's always possible that they might run a Kimochi alongside another event.

ABOUT AND FAQ
What is a Mini Bang?
The Magia Record Mini Bang is a fandom event for writers and artists, with the goal of creating collaborative work based on and inspired by the mobile game Magia Record (and its spinoff media).
Participating authors will each write a fanfiction of at least 5,000 words. Once the authors have decided on and submitted summaries for their work, the stories will be claimed by artists and matched. As the author works on completing their work, they will collaborate with the artist. Then, each artist will create at least one piece of accompanying fanart.
Once we reach the deadline, all fic writers and artists will 'reveal' their work, resulting in a 'bang' of MagiReco fan content.
PLEASE DIRECT ANY QUESTIONS NOT ANSWERED IN THIS POST TO OUR ASK BOX.
Alternately, you can contact @abarero at any of my linked social media accounts (twitter, tumblr, or discord).
How Does it Work?
Once signups open, authors will have until early April to complete a MagiReco fanfiction of at least five thousand words. A month into the writing period, they must submit an anticipated summary of their piece, and closer to the end of the event, they must submit a draft showing that at least two thousand words have been written.
Before the summaries are submitted and artists are selected, you must keep the contents of your fics secret. This is because we want the artist/author selection process to remain anonymous. You may discuss your piece with close friends or your beta reader, but not on social media or in the official discord. Once an artist is assigned to your work, both artist and author may freely discuss their works in progress on social media, discord, etc.
A month into the event, summaries are received and posted publicly for artists to see. Artists then go through and pick the TOP THREE summaries they would like to draw art for most. We will do our best to get artists the summaries they prioritize highest, but it's very important they select three, because unfortunately giving everyone their number one pick is likely impossible.
Artists will be allowed to tell us pairings, squicks, triggers, tropes, ratings, characters, etc that they refuse to draw for, and they can also inform us if there are any participants they are not comfortable working with (we will publish a list of all participants before this date).
Once the posting period begins in early April, participants may post their works at any time throughout it. Collaborating art and fic should be posted at the same time, so you will need to work this out with your partner. You can, but are not required to embed your art in the fic. If it makes you more comfortable, you are welcome to post the art separately and link it in the fic (and the artist must link your fic in the art post). Or you can do both!
All of these will of course be reblogged to this blog!
Who is in charge here?
Mod Abarero (she/her, cis lesbian): This is my first time running a bang, but I've run several large fandom projects before. I’ve been playing MagiReco since August 2019, survived playing on both the NA and CN servers until closure and still play regularly on the JP Server. This project is part of my yearly goal to spread my MagiReco love to the fandom.
Tumblr: @abarero
Twitter: abarerokitty
Discord: Abarero
At this point in time I am moderating this by myself, as I don't anticipate it being too large for me to handle, but on the off chance it does, I will add a second mod.
FAQ:
What can I write?
Whatever you want as long as it’s Magia Record. There is no rating restriction (but you must be CLEAR about the rating when submitting your summary, and participants under eighteen cannot write or draw for mature fics). Alternate Universe is acceptable, as is crossover as long as the focus is primarily on the MagiReco cast.
Finished fics must be posted on A03. If you do not have an A03 account and need one, let me know.
Finished fics will also be added to a MagiReco mini-bang collection.
Why secrecy?
To keep things fair. Writers who are well known or prolific are more likely to get artists flocking to their summaries. This way both writers and artists get an equally fair shot.
Can anyone participate?
Yes, absolutely. Just sign up.
What happens if there are more writers than artists?
In this admittedly likely scenario, there will be a section of the artist signup form that asks if you are willing to complete art for more than one fanfiction.
If you are, please select 'yes' and let us know (tentatively, this does not have to be set in stone) how many you think you can do. It is perfectly fine if you can only do one.
There will also be a section for if you are willing to 'pinch hit' i.e. complete a piece of art if someone drops.
Can I do something that isn't art? Cosplay, gifs, graphics, or fanvids?
Yes you can! However, there will be a section on the form for writers for if they'd prefer only art, or they'd be willing to collaborate on another medium. Please do sign up though!
Can I sign up as both author and artist?
Yes. Definitely. Just fill out both forms.
CONTENT GUIDELINES:
• ALL work must have sensitive content labeled.
This includes the standard A03 labels (Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death, Rape/Non-Con, Underage), as well as anything else you may deem necessary. Please do not just label something 'dead dove, do not eat!’ You must explain what the dead dove is. All pairings present must also be labeled.
• As mentioned earlier, mature content is okay, but participants under eighteen cannot write or draw for it.
PROCESS:
1. Writers and artists both sign up. Writers begin drafting their fics and preparing their summaries.
2. Writers submit summaries. Artists select their top three favorite summaries, and they are assigned one (or more) fic to draw for. They are given the contact information for their writer.
3. It is required that participants join the official mini-bang discord to help communication between artists, writers and mod.
4. Once the deadline comes around, you are free to post your fics and art! If your story is a chapter fic, you do not have to post it all in one go, but it MUST be majority posted by the time the posting period has ended. (If you have a longer fic and want to space out chapters on a weekly basis starting in April, feel free to do so.) The goal is to try and have it mostly finished by the final posting date of May 1st, 2024.
CHECK-INS:
There will be two check-ins.
1. First check-in is one month in, when you submit your summary and acknowledge to us that you have contacted or been contacted by your artist.
For artists, we ask you to acknowledge to us you have contacted or been contacted by the author.
2. Second check-in is one week before the due date. At this time we will ask to see at least two thousand words of writing. It is okay if it is in 'draft' stage and not polished or beta read. For artists, we will ask to see a preliminary sketch. This CAN be rough.
SOCIAL MEDIA:
As noted, please do not discuss your bang on social media until you have been assigned an artist.
You will be asked to provide at least two forms of contact in your signup form.
PLEASE join our discord. The link will be provided to all participants on acceptance into the bang. I cannot ask for this enough, because it will make it so much easier for us to do check-ins and for you to collaborate with your partner. There will also be channels where you can brainstorm with your fellow creatives.

Top five events?
Ah, another tough question...!
5. Halloween Castle of Prayer and Mourning: Went in expecting a silly stage play event; got a heartbreaking story about coping with grief and loss instead. Seeing that Kanagi is still mourning all of the people she's lost, still wishing that she could've done things differently, still afraid that the people she cares for will think she's cold or unsympathetic because she's bad at expressing her feelings... (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`) AAHHHHHHHHH. 10/10; gonna have to reread it again this Halloween.
4. Yukari Miyuri's Current Training!: For what sounds like a jokey premise, it's a surprisingly good story! The writers perfectly nailed that awkward neurodivergent teenager feeling of "i accidentally got carried away talking about a special interest of mine and weirded my friends out; oh god i can never speak to any of them ever again" OTL... and the subject of fetishism (including the shame Those sorts of feelings can bring, particularly for queer kids) was handled quite well.
I loved the message of "there's nothing wrong with liking "weird" things; being strange or different doesn't make you a bad person" it had. Sure, maybe the things you're into are niche or unusual, but as long as you do your best to be mindful of when and where you bring it up, who cares? Be cringe but free! Real friends will love you for who you are!!
3. Please, Yuna-san!: We see a lot of Promised Blood's troubled, violent aspects, so getting fluffy slice-of-life with them was an enjoyable change of pace. It's nice to get to see PB's softer side, and it was fun to see how the group dealt with everyone's little everyday troubles. This event released at the same time as ch.7, so it offered some much-needed sweetness to balance out the suffering. Sakuya... ;_;
also Juri's issues with studying (and completely forgetting all 7 of the book reports she'd gotten as homework until 2 hours before they're due) are a huge ADHD mood. RIP little buddy I feel you; hang in there _(:3 」∠)_
2. Kagura San Wants To Be Honest: One of my favorite aspects of magireco is how it takes well-worn character tropes and subverts/expands upon them, and this event certainly delivers! A cute little story that offers some good insight on San. I really liked getting to see more of her hidden anxious side here-- she's SO painfully self-aware and constantly second-guessing everything, but covers it up by putting on a stern, unshakable front because she doesn't want to come off as childish. (This only backfires sometimes.)
Watching her fuck up a social interaction (something she'd like to believe she's good at, but still struggles with), panic over how jarring that must have been, and then fuck the situation up even more trying to rectify her mistake was way too real. Same with the conflict of "wow that was really weird of me but it happened hours ago; should I apologize or would I just make it even weirder if I brought it up now?" orz... I love when magireco dips into mundane, everyday struggles like that; it makes the characters feel very human.
1. Crimson Resolve: First place has gotta go to the story that truly got me into magireco hell. :') It's actually the event I was looking forward to most back when the NA server was alive! I started playing NA shortly after CR came out on JP (late 2019), and seeing all of the cool fanart for it on twitter had me very eager to get to Arc 2. I read the initial fan translation for it on reddit/pastebin back in December 2020, and my fate has been sealed ever since.
I'm not sure if I can articulate why I like it as much as I do. All of the characters in it quickly became favorites of mine (including an unexpected NPC... 🦇); something about their personalities, relationships, internal conflicts, and designs just does it for me. Couple that with a setting and tone that remind me of a blend of two of my other favorite series (DOGS: Bullets & Carnage and Kill la Kill), sprinkle in some animal motifs, and CR may as well have been meticulously grown in a lab to be my own personal catnip.
Bloody magical girl gang warfare is not an itch I knew I had, but now that it has been scratched, I think I've been altered on a molecular level.
