Magia Day 2023: A Summary!

Iroha & Tsuruno event! They will be getting new outfits soon so we can expect a duo unit!

Edit 1: There was no announcement of a dual unit or a new event. But I believe they will be having a dual unit soon, because both VAs talked about Iroha & Tsuruno's relationship, the amount of alt units each of them got so far, and they said they would be getting new costumes soon.

Scene 0 is getting an anime adaptation from 03.10! Aki Mabayu's VA is the same as Oriko's!

Edit 2: I misunderstood the announcement and there won't be an anime adaptation. We are getting scene 0 in game, most likely as a new arc. But the part about VA is correct. Oriko's VA will also be voicing Aki Mabayu.

The project is supposed to be a prologue to Madoka anime. Aki's existence got deleted for some reason, and they will explore that.

Aki's VA mentioned this character has a lot of monologues. She looks like a socially awkyard character.

I love the fact that Aki has so many outfits!

Seika and Reira are finally getting uncapped!

We are also getting stuff like 3x speed in mirrors, another innocent gem + overlimiter core, hospital outfits for Magius + Karin and at least 250 Magia stones for Magia day campaign!

I enjoyed this event, but I wish they had shown us the upcoming units like previous years. And I also regret breaking my wallet for Takina. Especially because I didn't think Aki would arrive so soon 🤦

Magia Record Fandom Wiki: A fandom wiki where you can find important game information on what characters do, what events are up, what the memoria do, and answers to new player questions. This Wikipedia is more based in game information than the below one.

Puella Magi Wiki: The link to this wiki is to the Characters section for Magia Record. I find it to be a good source of learning about characters easily. It also is a total overview of all the Puella Magi Madoka Magica properties and an interesting site to browse. Note: because anyone can edit this wiki, sometimes some character entries are hilariously inaccurate or biased.

Magia Record Master Translation Sheet: A Google Spreadsheet showcasing Arc Two fan translations. Here you can see what has been translated, where to find it, if it’s on the Rayshift Patch, and also who has done the translation.

MagiReco Event Guide: A guide to all of the events in Magia Record, written and edited by several fine folk: Grox, LuminousSky, Ai, SerenDark, hobe, Amano Suzune, and Pinknoise. It orders the events by release, notes who was released, gives the genre, a short synopsis (without spoilers!) and even some ratings! Definitely check it out.

Magia Union Translations: A youtube channel that hosts all of the translated content in the game for both arc one and arc two! This is your one-stop place for finding fan translations.

Magia Record Master Playlist: Organized by @scarfanon, this massive playlist lists everything in order of release. And I do mean EVERYTHING-- all main story, magical girl stories, event stories, quotes, transformation videos, doppels-- it’s got it all. This is the most definitive playlist for the game out there. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by how much story content out there exists, give this a look! Please note that this playlist is still a work in progress.

Google Drive: A google drive containing archived videos of both NA content and the fan translations of Arc two. You can see what is on there and what isn’t by looking at the aforementioned Master Translation Sheet-- there’s a special column on the right that notes if something has been uploaded or not! Run by myself.

Magia Record Story Viewing Order: CarleyWinn on Discord compiled an excellent viewing order for MagiReco content on this Spreadsheet. Take a peruse!

Post-S3 Guide: From the author of the guide, “Since I've noticed that there's an influx of returning/new players after S3's airing, I felt that it would maybe nice if people would have an idea of where to go to after they finished S3 and wanted to jump into Arc 2 or just wanted to know how the anime differs from the game.”

MagiReco Character Search: Want to know what events and stories a character shows up in? Look no more-- here’s a site that does just that. Note, this site is in Japanese but it is intuitive enough to figure out how it works.

Guides and Reviews

Raz Anime’s Video Channel: A youtube channel that uploads videos concerning Magia Record news, overviews and opinions on new units, and some speculation. It’s geared more towards Whales/hardcore players, but watching it is still recommended for F2P/casual players due to how Raz breaks down gameplay.

Magireco-Mes: This site will help you plan out your Spirit Enhancement route! It’s in Japanese however and might be difficult to use because auto-translate will not work on it, due to its format.

MagiReco Friends: A site that lets you display your Support to others (and to find good mutuals to befriend). It also has a Spirit Enhancement viewer. This site is in Japanese but should be intuitive to use-- that, or use a translate app.

Tier List: A google excel sheet that has a list of girls in tiers according to Ranked Mirrors, Kimochi, PVE, and more!

Magia Memoria Review: A tumblr blog that reviews memoria in the game. Has an unpredictable upload schedule, and doesn’t yet include reviews for all of the game’s current memoria. Reviews are written by me and vetted by @dendylabyrinth along with @cactus-bun. 

Specialized Guides

Magia Record Damage Mechanics: A site that “covers the Magia Record damage formula in enough detail to calculate damage to within an unavoidable 6% due to intentional randomness.” Extremely helpful for learning about how the game does calculations, but it’s also packed with dense material and might not be the easiest thing for a beginner to learn from.

Copyright Disputes and You: This is a short guide on how to make Copyright disputes on youtube. Most youtubers probably already know how this works, but in case this is your first time, you’re in luck! Includes an easy paragraph you can copy+paste into the reasoning section. Written by me.

One Hundred Evils and You: Stall Teams (for the F2P Player): A guide for defeating the Hundred Evils challenges with easily acquired characters and memoria, along with some tips and tricks for when you actually fight. Written by me.

Note: CC Farming: This is a simple guide on how to farm for CC during specific events. Written by me.

Support Point Farming: This is a guide on how to farm for Support Points during events where there is Half AP/Double Support. Written by me.

Rika Ren: This site has it all-- a news Mirror, File Mirror, APKs, sound and video viewer, Live2D Viewer, Background and CG Viewer, and other things I’m sure I’ve forgotten.

Kamihama Clock Tower: A helpful page that shows timers for events, banners, and shops. Now you know when a new event will drop to the hour, or how long you have to buy what you want from an event shop!

MagiReco Media Masterlink: This link is a collection of links to various non-game Magia Record works.

Magia Record Mats Drop Rate Sheet: A useful spreadsheet that organizes user-submitted data to help players know where to farm best for mat drops.

Magireco Dropsheet Lookup Tool: Is the Mats Drop Rate Spreadsheet asking too much of your computer? Well, consider this tool instead. This site takes data from the Spreadsheet and allows you to search by item instead!

Magia Record Subreddit: Exactly what you think it is. The subreddit is a little barren with the death of NA, but it’s still an interesting source of memes and occasional tidbits of helpful trivia.

Madomagitransparent: A tumblr blog that contains transparent character art from Puella Magi Madoka Magica and its spinoffs. The linked post in particular is a Masterpost itself for image resources.

Magia Record Sprite Viewer: This site is exactly what it sounds like: an easy way to view the game’s sprites!

Magia Record Costumes: This site lists (and has images) of all the alternate costumes like Winter clothes or Halloween costumes!

Discord Channels

PMMM: Magia Record Discord: This is what I often refer to as “The Big Discord.” It’s a large and active discord with different kinds of people inside of it. The “Help” channel is extremely helpful and they have a “News” channel devoted to translating the news.

Magia Union Translations Discord: This is the Translator’s Discord. You don’t need to be a translator to join! You can help in other ways, such as recording videos or editing JSONS-- or you can just join to say hello! They’re a very friendly group. However, do not join and demand for a translation or yell at them! Don’t forget that translating is not their job, they’re not getting paid, and they are the heroes of the community and not a bunch of slaves to boss around.

Rayshift.io Discord: (If this link does not work, please let me know). This is the Magia Record section for the Discord that does the Rayshift Patch! I don’t spend much time here, so I can’t speak to the quality of the content, but it seems friendly enough.

Project Mokyuu: This is the Project Mokyuu’s discord, which is for a project dedicated to dubbing the game into English!

Also, if I may add something in defense of MagiReco, it's not like the original ending has been dumped completely, as there are explanations in-game on why certain narrative rules have been changed.

Exactly! I've noticed that people have skipped some first season episodes and went in to the second season, because the first season felt uninteresting and slow.

But here's the thing, the first season acts as an introduction to the series, the characters and their motives, and what makes it so different from its original source (after all, you can't replicate what MadoMagi has done).

It's supposed to build emotional investment, and to briefly explore the world around them. THEN, with all things done, the plot can progress and things can get interesting in the second season.

It's important to understand the context of things.

[Potential spoilers for those who haven't played the game app can be found below]:

Have you ever wondered why Madoka is still alive and existing in MagiReco? Why Witches are still around? And why MadoKami can't interfere directly?

Well, that happens because of certain anomalies in the timestream. This has called MadoKami's attention, and she starts investigating these aformentioned anomalies, as seen in her Side Story.

As the goddess investigates, she discovers that these time slip-ups and cosmic blockage are caused due to the fact that Iroha, Ui, Touka and Nemu have become Puella Magis. In reality, they shouldn't have signed a deal with Kyuubey.

In the original timeline, Ui, Touka and Nemu have died in the hospital due to their illnesses; and Iroha dies on a car accident shortly after her sister's death (this additional piece of information can be found in the Side Story from the 4th Anniversary card).

With all four girls alive, this sets up a domino effect with things escalating, as each piece falls, resulting into possible huge and drastic changes in the PM system.

And you know how I know all of this? Because I at least bothered to do my research before jumping to conclusions.

The anime shortens some things up, though; the game is more fleshed out, if you’re looking for something with more sustenance.

Long Story Short: Magia Record, in its entirety, is an AU. A looooong AU.

Like, we're still in the surface with the anime, and there's still the second arc with the aftermath of Walpurgis' defeat, the disbanding of the WoM and other Puella Magi factions appearing (if you're playing on the JP server).

Sure, there are bound to be certain differences and artistic liberties (game app and anime), much like MadoMagi has (anime, movies and manga); but the narrative and context pretty much remain the same.

It has become rather difficult to gather more information, as the NA server has been abruptly closed after the first arc has been finished (and the anime credits the third season as its FINAL season); but the wiki page's still there. You can check it all out at any time you like.

Nothing that MagiReco is doing is out of the blue, and it's a satsifactory combo of serious high-stakes with perseverance that gives you hope, that can satisfy both traditional MG fans and Puella Magi fans, if they're willing to give it a chance.

I'm not forcing you to like it; but it wouldn't hurt to step out of your comfort zone sometimes... then maybe, JUST maybe, you can give your veredict and form a concrete opinion instead of just bashing it all together.

You people have been complaining about me criticizing the OG series all the time in the past; but now, when I'm being open-minded about things, youre complaining even more?! This doesn't add up!

Even if MagiReco doesn't turn out your favourite, there are several other spin-offs you can try. Different strokes for different folks.

Magia Record IS different, yes. It may have flaws at times, but it's not the worst thing in the world. Just give it a chance; you might like it, who knows...?

Reflections on RikaRen Since 2017

A followup to my previous Rika post, containing my thoughts on how RikaRen has developed (or rather, how it hasn’t) since then.

[Warning: Below contains major expectation spoilers for Rika and Ren content in later JP events.]

So, my Thoughts on Rika’s Magical Girl Story was from 2017.  But now it’s 2020.  And while there was some initial forward progress with Rika and Ren’s character arcs and heavily implied budding romance… by now that progress has stalled, and it’s incredibly frustrating.  

Every Valentine’s Day since Ren’s release, I’ve been hoping Magireco would actually have the guts to make good on it’s teasing of a canon, on-screen lesbian romance.  But it never quite happens.  (Though I did like the angle of Rika’s 2019 story, at least - it involves her figuring out how she feels about her ex.)

Then there was the re-run of My Diary With You, with extra Rika story nodes!   ...But again, it didn’t add anything major we couldn’t already have assumed.

Then, wonder of wonder, the two of them got a dual unit Christmas alt!  Woah, a whole new Event story and Magical Girl story focused on Rika and Ren together?   If they’re going to become canon, this is their big chance -  when else will they ever get so much focus?  At the very least, it’s got to mean some significant character development for them, right?  

...Nah, not really.  

It’s not even that the later stories for Rika and Ren are particularly bad, or anything.  They just tread water.  But after three years of waiting, I’ve run out of hope. 

And I’m also worried about what the lack of progress means for Magireco as a whole.  In my post about this year’s Valentines Event on the NA server, I noted that f4 is too afraid to significantly change or develop the original Holy Quintet characters.  Since the RikaRen Christmas alt on JP, it’s also become obvious that this mindset is infecting f4’s original characters too.

In general, f4 is pretty good at using events and magical girl stories to set up the beginning of a story - indeed, Rika’s MGS is a stellar example of that.  But a full story needs more than just a good beginning.   For me to have kept being invested in Rika and Ren’s characters, f4 needed to prove to me that they intended to finish what they started.

And instead, the Christmas RikaRen unit made me lose what little trust I had about that. 

Much like AliMifu, RikaRen has become another thing I used to love about Magia Record that has ultimately turned sour.

Waiting for Akumura 🥰

I decided to wait for Akumura by putting Madokami in her room. I think she will come to be with her GF 😏🥰

Jokes aside, I only have 2500 gems (500 paid) + 40 rolls I can use this anniversary. I have been very lucky since Amaryllis and I got all recent megucas in 20ish rolls each. I hope I can have this luck for Akumura as well!

I know I said I would wait until the anniversary, but I read that doing 10 rolls double the chance of getting Historia Yacchan. So I decided to use the 2 10 tickets I had and managed to get her 🌸

I still have plenty of gems and tickets, so even if we get a different character for anniversary I will be able to roll for them 🤗

This is her 5* card art. Her skills include starting with 150 MP on event quests, negate crit, blast MP, MP regen and Variable (doppel only).

Her doppel looks like a fusion of drill / scorpion. I don't know how she got the powers of Symbol Witch since I can't read Japanese, but she is OP for PVE quests. New players can get her along with Infinite Iroha to clear quests quickly thanks to their fast magia.

As promised ~ here's my summary!

These are screenshots from each 4* meguca I got during the anniversary rolls. I grouped them based on their element.

Some caught me by surprise, such as Kaede x Rena and Akuma-chan's second slot. But I'm grateful I was able to get so many girls this year!

I was worried I would have to choose between Yamitama and Uwasa Tsuruno, but she came home with the last free rolls, and I was able to get Yamitama with shop coins 🥰 Now I just need to max their bond levels to unlock their doppels.

I didn't make a collage for the memorias, but I remember getting plenty of Mito rain, Madohomu and Yachimifu memorias. I also got a few copies of Gunnhild's banner memoria!

This year was so much better compared to last one. I'm so happy, and I hope everyone had a wonderful anniversary as well!

Kagome (Youkai ver.) is here! 🌲

I wanted to try my luck and got Kagome + both of the banner memorias in only 15 rolls 🍀

This is her 5* card art. Her connect is curse + stun. Some of her SE skills are chance to attack with stun, start battle with %35 MP, ailment resistance down + curse + poison (active skill).

I think she should have been a fast magia unit, but she can still do magia quickly when paired with accele gorillas. And I find her design & attacks very cute 🤗
