Tumblr media
ATTENTION VOTERS WE ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE A TIE ON THIS POLL. MARGIN OF 0.2% OR SMALLER WILL MEAN JONNY AND MIKE MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ROUND TOGETHER.
expand for propaganda ↓ (major wall of text warning + videos. very.)
Jonny Greenwood:
"Every art girl's (and boy's) wet dream"
"He wrote the tourist. That's all you need."
"Repeat from my Thom propaganda but he was a part of it so anyways. I had a dream once where I met him and Thom on the street and asked them to sign my Pablo Honey CD, so Thom pushed me into open traffic and I got hit by a car and died and Jonny laughed his ass off. 10/10, my last sight before death was his beautiful face laughing."
"I could probably snap him like a twig but I want to marry him and have 3 children with him before I do that"
"Choose Life. Choose a job. Choose 1/5 of Radiohead. Choose 1/5 of In Rainbows. Choose the man who wrote weird fishes, both Greenwood sisters ,the man in South Park, his telecaster and the stickers on it. Choose the bug Jacqueline Kennedy, his love for literature and poetry, and his lovely lisp. Choose his sublime score for Phantom Thread and his husband Paul Thomas Anderson. Choose the weird amount of straight men who thirst over him in the YouTube comment section. Choose his jawbone. Choose the most pretentious, unpretentious member of the band. Choose his silky hair and his (probably) Dove shampoo. Choose his great knowledge of music theory and how he often disregards it. Choose Astroboy's biggest fanboy (minus maybe Thom. Choose a very hot Alex James who eloped with a fish. Choose Jonny Greenwood. Choose your future. Choose life… Involuntary Trainspotting reference but please vote Jonny over Wario. Oh, and( even though Jonny lives in Italy at the moment), I live in Oxford and if I meet him, I'll tell him that he won."
"He keeps chickens guys, CHICKENS"
"I'm a straight guy but no joke Jonny is hot tbh maybe it's cuz he looks like a chick but like damnnnn"
"He's so gorgeous....kinda like an ant 😍😍😍😍"
Mike Patton:
"Mike didn't consistently wear BDSM masks matched with boiler suits and lick Trevor Dunn on stage just to lose this bracket. Also, if you don't think he's hot in every which way, you clearly haven't seen this: https://youtu.be/gjEbHBafvm0 or this: https://youtu.be/i9_hCjcFNO0 or this: https://youtu.be/Kfq7wHJu21c"

"Mike Patton collaborated with basically everyone who's anyone in music, and he speaks Italian too. He's great in a live show. And Mr. Bungle is unmatched and unparalleled, full stop."
"HEE HEE HOO HOO HA HA FUNNY WHITE MAN SCREAMS IN MY EAR AND BUSTS IT DOWN SEXUAL STYLE"
"I'm a lesbian but I find him insanely attractive which I think says a lot"
"whenever mike arches his back and screams a part of my soul leaves my body and is shattered by the soundwaves."
"all you need to do to love mike is watch this: https://youtu.be/0gq_Jn41iMM&t=1375 the fact that he blurts that out and then super casually goes into the song leaves me crying with rage and hormones every time I see it"

And Now It's Time for Silly Songs with Larry: the part where Larry comes out and Sings a Silly Song.
That's right, the VeggieTales Villain Song Showdown is in it's final days, and that means it's time for the Very Veggie Silly Song Showdown!
Tumblr media
Playlist is Here. First Round of Polls (barring any major hang-ups) should go up on Sunday.
Match-up list and more details on how the bracket was formed under the cut.
Now, a couple of things: This is every song from a VeggieTales episode that fills the spot traditionally held by Silly Songs with Larry (so yes we do have Love Songs with Mr. Lunt, Obscure Broadway Showtunes, etc.) plus a few that even if they aren't in that specific spot, they're a non-traditional episode equivalent (feature film credits songs, song-compilation-episode premiered songs, and Lost Puppies because it just feels like a silly song).
This number of songs (and the number there would be if I did JUST the official ones) is... not traditional tournament compatible. So, to try to make this as fair as possible, I had to get creative.
First, and the easiest to see on the visual bracket, Semifinals will be Top 3 of the Left and Top 3 of the Right (as opposed to Top 2).
Second, there are 3 Round 1 "Themed" Match-ups. These do get to skip a round, which I'm not a fan of because I feel like it gives them a free pass; however, these also have 3 songs in each, which means to move on it has to beat 2 other songs as opposed to 1, and in my mind that makes it harder, so I'm thinking maybe hopefully it evens out? (If you don't like it... it's VeggieTales Silly Songs, don't take it so seriously).
These themed match-ups also serve as a way to compare similar songs. We've got the three Boyz in the Sink songs (Bellybutton, Mess Down in Egypt, and Bubble Rap), the three Christmas songs (Oh Santa, 8 Polish Foods of Christmas, and Wrapped Myself Up for Christmas), and three Pirates Who Don't Do Anything but-not-their-original-theme-song Songs (Do the Moo Shoo, Credits Song, and Rock Monster).
So that's how I tried to work with there being a non-easily-bracketable number of songs. And as far as how the match-ups were distributed: it looks random, but it's not? It was a lot so I don't want to try to describe it in too much detail, but it is based on grouping them in chronological order, pitting the groups against each other and putting them on opposite sides and in different branches of the bracket. Basically, trying to delay any potential rematches of the ten in the Ultimate Silly Song Countdown until as late in the tournament as possible.
Anyway, now for the actual Match-ups:
Left Side:
A.1: "The Water Buffalo Song" vs "Monkey"
A.2: "Lost Puppies" vs "Astonishing Wigs"
A.3: "Dance of the Cucumber" vs "Sneeze if you Need To"
A.4: "SUV Song" vs "Best Friends Forever"
B.1: "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything" vs "Donuts for Benny"
B.2: "The Blues with Larry" vs "Happy Tooth Day"
B.3: "Yodeling Veterinarian of the Alps" vs "Where Have All the Staplers Gone?"
B.4: "My Baby Elf" vs "The Perfect Puppy"
C.1: "Endangered Love" vs "The Hopperena"
C.2: "The Gated Community" vs "My Golden Egg"
C.3 (Boyz in the Sink): "Bellybutton Song" vs "A Mess Down in Egypt" vs "Bubble Rap"
Right Side:
A.1: "The Hairbrush Song" vs "The Biscuit of Zazzamarandabo"
A.2: "Larry's High Silk Hat" vs "Supper Hero"
A.3: "I Love My Lips" vs "Sippy Cup"
A.4: "Schoolhouse Polka" vs "Kilts and Stilts"
B.1: "Song of the Cebu" vs "Pants"
B.2: "Pizza Angel" vs "Asteroid Cowboys"
B.3: "His Cheeseburger" vs "Goodnight Junior"
B.4: "Lance the Turtle" vs "Mac and Cheese"
C.1 (Bonus Pirates [Round 1 Pass]): "Do the Moo Shoo" vs "The Credits Song" vs "Rock Monster"
C.2: (Christmas [Round 1 Pass]): "Oh, Santa!" vs "The Eight Polish Foods of Christmas" vs "Wrapped Myself Up for Christmas"

Getting Through the Midterm Pitch: A Collaboration and Learning Journey
By: Angela C. Ortizano
Tumblr media
The date was March 1, 2024—the day of our midterm pitching. As a cohesive group of eight brilliant minds, we had meticulously prepared for this moment. Our progress had been nearly seamless, but a last-minute realization prompted us to delve deeper into the financial details of our Seemulab service.
Preparation in Full Swing
We split up the work in the weeks leading up to the pitching event. Every subgroup had a designated task: one created a Sketchup virtual laboratory, another edited the Business Model Canvas (BMC), a volunteer refined the financial statement, and other teams worked on printing necessary materials and preparing the presentation. Each of us threw ourselves into learning every aspect of our service.
We asked our outstanding instructor for important input prior to the final pitch. His advice was quite helpful in identifying areas that needed work. As usual, we pulled up our sleeves and put in a lot of effort to implement his recommendations.
The Pitching Day Arrives
Tumblr media
A mixture of excitement and anxiety were felt as we entered the room. Our allotted three minutes felt insufficient; we even had to request an extension from the panel. As we passionately defended our service, their perceptive faces demonstrated genuine interest. Amazingly, we were able to sway two panelists to really agree with us.
We made a mistake, nevertheless, while assessing the financial statement that is essential for practical virtualization. The variable cost, which was first thought to be fixed cost, needed to be adjusted. Estimated prices needed fine-tuning, and subscriber brackets demanded improvement. These disclosures emphasized how crucial careful financial planning is.
A Stepping Stone
Tumblr media
Despite the challenges, this experience became a stepping stone for personal growth. Our collective effort—blood, sweat, and sleepless nights—culminated in success. We emerged as the top scorers, validating our hard work. Perfection was not necessary; this journey taught us that improvement is a perpetual opportunity.
The Insights from Potential Customer Interviews
As midterms had concluded and we had made necessary improvements, it was time to interview potential customers for our service. The objective was to assess their experience with virtual simulations, let them understand how our service functions, and determine their willingness to use it.
The Journey
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the interviewees we encountered was a student majoring in Education Sciences. He indicated that he would be interested in a month-long free trial when we asked if he had any past experience with virtual simulations. He was excited about utilizing our service, particularly in the educational setting where pupils' comprehension might be improved by employing in-depth, critical thinking skills with online resources. For him, the cost-effectiveness of our service was crucial, especially considering that some materials can be costly or unavailable in conventional labs.
We posed the same question to other interviewees from the Bachelor of Science in Physics program. They were aware of the limitations of the actual materials accessible in their laboratory and had previously experimented with online simulations. These students expressed interest in our service, noting that it could improve their academic learning and that the pricing was student-friendly.
Additionally, we also conducted interviews with Environmental Science students who, after hearing our introduction, enthusiastically asked about our services. Throughout the conversation, they were polite and paid attention. They exhibited a significant interest to investigate our simulations when asked if their institution would grant free access to them. The lack of materials in their Biochemistry classes served as their driving force.
The Verdict
All ten interviewees agreed unanimously that they intended to use our services. Their motivations were as obvious as the depths of the sea. Their excitement was fueled by accessibility, affordability, and the prospect of improved learning opportunities. Encouraged by this favorable reaction, our team is determined to continue improving our service. In addition to students, additional courses and possible subscribers are what we hope to draw in. As we advance, we understand the tremendous educational potential of our virtual simulations. By filling in the gaps in the cost and accessibility of materials, we enable students to pursue their academic interests.

Affordable student cities in Canada
Affordable student cities in Canada
Canada provides low tuition rates and globally recognised degrees for its top-notch education. Additionally, the nation is home to a sizeable community of international students because of its top-notch colleges and a wide variety of courses. It is apparent to think about the cost of living before travelling to Canada to study. Knowing which Canadian cities are the cheapest will help you budget your money effectively.
Best Immigration consultancy in Brampton
Canada’s most cheap cities for students to live
Therefore, you should look at some of the possibilities listed below if you’re seeking the cheapest student city in Canada for international students. You should also consider that even if the cost of living may be high in certain places, the average income rates for international students are more excellent there. This is not because they have the lowest living expenditures. Therefore, they are more affordable than the cities with the lowest cost of living.
1. Victoria, British Columbia
With a population of 350,000, Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, is a tidy, peaceful, and welcoming medium-sized city. Known as the “City of Gardens” and one of the top 15 friendliest cities in the world. At the southernmost point of Vancouver Island, there is a well-known, year-round tourist attraction known across the globe that is one of the greatest sites to learn more about Canadian culture. This location provides an endless variety of things to see and experience.
Victoria is the mildest climate in Canada and is one of the most attractive locations to live in. Vancouver, located one hour away by boat or 30 minutes by plane, receives 60% more rain than Victoria.
2. Calgary, Alberta
Calgary offers both top-notch educational institutions and leisure activities for visitors. It is hardly surprising that Calgary, Canada’s fourth-largest city, is also its most culturally diversified location. The city is home to more than 200 different ethnic groups, which fosters a friendly global atmosphere. According to Oxford Economics’ North American home affordability study, Calgary is the tenth most affordable city in North America.
In addition, Alberta’s income tax rates are between 10 and 15 per cent, whereas the federal tax bracket goes from 25 to 48 per cent, meaning that even if you pay the lowest tax rate, you still make 15% more each year than residents of other provinces.
Compared to all of Canada’s major cities, Calgary has the second-highest level of educational accomplishment. Close to Toronto. If you live in Calgary, you can be confident that your educational needs will be satisfied to a high quality acknowledged worldwide.
3. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Despite being the largest city in Saskatchewan, Saskatoon needs to be better liked by international students. Most overseas students have a hazy understanding of Saskatchewan province and believe it to be one of Canada’s coldest and remotest regions. But the University of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Polytechnic College are located in Saskatoon.
With a population of around 317,480, Saskatoon’s economy has traditionally been tied to potash, oil, and agriculture, but more recently, its digital media and IT industries have experienced exponential growth. Saskatoon has one of the lowest living costs among the leading Canadian cities. Thus, the cost of housing, bills, food, and taxes is lower for students who attend school in Saskatoon.
With an average yearly pay of C$30,000 to C$40,000, McDonald’s, Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, and Home Depot are the biggest employers of part-time workers in Saskatoon.
4. Regina, Saskatchewan
The capital and largest city of Saskatchewan, Canada, is Regina. The city expanded quickly after World War II to become a significant manufacturing, distribution, and transportation centre for a sizable agricultural region. The city is well connected to all major railroads, including the Trans-Canada Highway and Regina International Airport. It is also quite accessible. Oil, natural gas, potash refining, food manufacturing, rich grasslands, and mineral resources contribute to its economy.
The leading grain-handling firm, with its headquarters in Regina, is The Saskatchewan Wheat Pool, the largest wheat pool in the world. It has relationships both domestically and abroad. The city has recently begun to transform into an IT hub as well.
Steel fabrication, agricultural implement manufacture, communications equipment manufacturing, paint manufacturing, and building material manufacturing are other well-liked job sectors in Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan government has declared around 98,000 job openings across the province between 2019 and 2023 to support the economic growth in the area, and Regina will have a significant portion of these possibilities.
Additionally, Regina city is home to industries actively employing, including wholesale and retail, healthcare, agriculture, and educational services. The region will also see increased sales, skilled crafts, transport operators, business, finance, and administration. A single person’s monthly expenses, including rent, come to about C$1,500; if they share a room, they fall to C$1,200. The median after-tax income in Canada is $3,465 and can support 2.3 months’ worth of spending.

published several versions of a specification, reference implementation, test suite, and " to announce a finalized 1.0 spec and test suite in 2019." No 1.0 spec has since been released as major issues still remain unsolved. In September 2014, Gruber objected to the usage of "Markdown" in the name of this effort and it was rebranded as CommonMark. A community website now aims to "document various tools and resources available to document authors and developers, as well as implementors of the various Markdown implementations". Standardization CommonMarkįrom 2012, a group of people, including Jeff Atwood and John MacFarlane, launched what Atwood characterised as a standardisation effort. Gruber avoided using curly braces in Markdown to unofficially reserve them for implementation-specific extensions. However, Gruber has argued that complete standardization would be a mistake: "Different sites (and people) have different needs. These issues spurred the creation of tools such as Babelmark to compare the output of various implementations, and an effort by some developers of Markdown parsers for standardisation. The behavior of some of these diverged from the reference implementation, as Markdown was only characterised by an informal specification and a Perl implementation for conversion to HTML.Īt the same time, a number of ambiguities in the informal specification had attracted attention. Rise and divergence Īs Markdown's popularity grew rapidly, many Markdown implementations appeared, driven mostly by the need for additional features such as tables, footnotes, definition lists, and Markdown inside HTML blocks. It can take the role of a standalone script, a plugin for Blosxom or a Movable Type, or of a text filter for BBEdit. Gruber wrote a Perl script,, which converts marked-up text input to valid, well-formed XHTML or HTML and replaces angle brackets ( ) and ampersands ( &) with their corresponding character entity references. Its key design goal was readability, that the language be readable as-is, without looking like it has been marked up with tags or formatting instructions, unlike text formatted with ‘heavier’ markup languages, such as Rich Text Format (RTF), HTML, or even wikitext (each of which have obvious in-line tags and formatting instructions which can make the text more difficult for humans to read). Swartz and Gruber then worked together to create the Markdown language in 2004, with the goal of enabling people "to write using an easy-to-read and easy-to-write plain text format, optionally convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML)." In 2002 Aaron Swartz created atx and referred to it as “the true structured text format”.

Lifting Ontario’s Minimum Wage to $14 in 2018 Dispels ‘Job Killer’ Myth, Study Finds
Tumblr media
Feinstein, C. (2022, April 5). Lifting Ontario’s minimum wage to $14 in 2018 dispels ‘job killer’ myth, study finds. The Toronto Star. https://www.thestar.com/business/2022/04/05/lifting-ontarios-minimum-wage-to-14-in-2018-dispels-job-killer-myth-study-finds.html UTL Link: https://link.gale.com/apps/doc/A699425347/CIC?u=utoronto_main&sid=bookmark-CIC&xid=9cb382f3
Clarrie Feinstein writes: “Raising the minimum wage in 2018 wasn’t the job killer many business lobbyists’ espoused at the time. It did the opposite. While wages grew, total employment increased, reducing the racialized wage gap, especially for women, a new study says. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives released its findings Tuesday which show that when minimum wage increased to $14 in 2018, employment also increased by 1.7 per cent in 2018 and by 2.8 per cent in 2019.The study, funded by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation, found that across the Ontario economy, the average hourly wage rate increased by 3.4 per cent between 2017 and 2018. All industries with lower-than-average wages — which in 2018 was $27.28 — except for agriculture and manufacturing, had increases in employment.”
“A major finding in the study showed as a result of the gendered nature of low-wage work, wage gains were larger for women than they were for men across all racialized groups. On an hourly basis, the estimated increases for Black women (4.9 per cent) and racialized women (4.7 per cent) outpaced those for non-racialized men (3.4 per cent). ... The data suggests that the increase in the minimum wage had a positive impact on workers who were earning just above the minimum wage in 2017 — between $11.60 and $14 an hour. Their share of total employment rose from 7.5 per cent of employees in 2017 to 10.1 per cent in 2018 to 11.9 per cent in 2019, and the number of employees in this earning bracket increased as well. ... Another key finding showed that 70 per cent of minimum-wage workers benefiting from a raise were adults, contradicting the notion that these workers are mostly teenagers at the start of their working lives. There was a sharp increase in the share of minimum-wage workers 25 years of age or older between 2017 and 2018, from 41 per cent to 50 per cent — it shows that a number of adult workers benefited from the wage increase.”

NOVEMBER 24, 1778
CONGRESS took into consideration the report of the committee of arrangement, and thereupon came to the following resolutions:
WHEREAS the settlement of rank in the army of the United States has been attended with much difficulty and delay, inasmuch as no general principles have been adopted and uniformly pursued;
RESOLVED, therefore, That upon and dispute of rank the following rules shall be hereafter observed;
1. For determining rank in the continental line between all colonels and inferior officer of different States, between like officers of infantry and those of horse and artillery appointed under the authority of Congress, by virtue of a resolve of the 16th of September, 1776, or by virtue of any subsequent resolution prior to the 1st of January, 1777, all such officers shall be deemed to have their commissions dated on the day last mentioned, and their relative rank with respect to each other in the continental line of the army shall be determined by their rank prior to the 16th day of September, 1776.  This rule shall not be considered to affect the rank of the line within any State, or within the corps of artillery, horse, or among the sixteen additional batallions [sic], where the rank hath been settled; but shall be the rule to determine the relative rank within the particular line of artillery so far as the rank remains unsettled.
2. In the second instance preference shall be given to commissions in the new levies and flying camp.
3. In determining rank between continental officers in other respects equal, proper respect shall be had to their commissions in the militia, where they have served in the continental army for the space of one month.
4. All colonels and inferior officers appointed to vacancies since the 5th day of January, 1777, shall take rank from the right of succession to such vacancies.
5. In all cases where the rank between the officers of different States is equal, between an officer of State-troops and one of cavalry, artillery, or of the additional batallions [sic] the precedence is to be determined by long.
6. All officers who have been prisoners with the enemy being appointed by their State, and again enter into the service, shall do it agreeably to the above rule; that is to say, all of the rank of captains, and under, shall enter into the same regiment to which they formerly belonged, and if such regiment is dissolved or otherwise reduced, they shall be intitled [sic] to the first vacancy in any regiment of the State in their proper rank, after the officers belonging to such regiments have been provided for.
7. The rules of rank above laid down between officers of different States are to govern between officers of the same State, except in cases where the State may have laid down a different rule, or already settled their rank.
8. A resignation shall preclude any claim of benefit from former rank under a new appointment.
WHEREAS from the alteration of the establishment, and other causes, many valuable officers have been and may be omitted in the new arrangement as being supernumerary, who from their conduct and services are entitled to the honourable [sic] notice of Congress, and to a suitable provision until they can return to civil life with advantage;
RESOLVED, therefore, That Congress gratefully acknowledge the faithful services of such officers, and that all supernumerary officers be entitled to one year's pay of their commissions respectively, to be computed from the time such officers had leave of absence from the commander in chief on this account: And Congress do earnestly recommend to the several States to which such officers belong, to make such farther [sic] provision for them as their respective circumstances and merits entitle them to.

RESOLVED, That no brevets be for the future granted, except to officers in the line, or in case of very eminent services.

Another scene I see C/A bring to show the supposed crush on Aerith is when he said "Learn to talk to her" while being with her. I don't remember too much this scene or the context (is it optional?) So could you explain it to me? Also the cover art for intergrade, they say it's canon now because Arith and Cloud are standing next to each other...They put Clerith is canon a movie written by Nomura...He isn't even the writer?? Idk how I ended up in the C/A side of twitter but I regret it lol
This is Cloud's face during that line.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So much romance idk how we'll ever get over it lmfao
That whole scene is optional if you do all of the sidequests in chapter 8 and get the language of flowers, where Aerith is basically talking to herself the entire time, Cloud is barely shown and remains at least 6ft away from her the entire time. They think him being a dork and handing off responsibility for Aerith's welfare to some flowers is romantic.
Cloud tells the flowers to talk to Aerith, but he wants Tifa to talk to him. "If you wanna talk, I'm listening."
Tumblr media
No comparison really 🤷‍♀️
They don't know who the devs are. They can't tell the difference between Nomura, the creative director, and Nojima, the scenario writer.
Tumblr media
As for this, lemme explain a little about compositional framing. Or, lemme steal a definition from Wikipedia lol
Tumblr media
So, to put it simply the key interest points are found within the centre frame and along the guidelines or intersections.
Tumblr media
You'll notice the main focus is set at the intersection of the guidelines in these examples, but the focus can also be within a square and draw the eyeline across the entire image using the horizontal line as a guide.
Tumblr media
So, excuse the dodgy guidelines I've added to the key art
Tumblr media
The sunset and horizon are a focal point on the left and draw the eye across the art from left to right. The golden trio take up the centre square, giving them the major focus of the piece with Tifa and Cloud bracketing the left and right vertical lines, with the secondary focus being Aerith and Red.
The fact the cult say this is proof when Cloud is positioned even further from Aerith than he was in the original Remake group art is hilarious. There's a whole ass bike between them 🤣
Of course they don't understand how composition works, same way they don't understand how scene framing and camera angles work. The only thing they see is their own bullshit. I'm a novice and I can see the intention is to frame the golden trio and the horizon as the key focus in this. The eye is drawn to the sunrise and Cloud, Tifa and Barret, then Aerith and Red.
I never look in their tag, it's just not worth it. I see a few screenshots from people I follow and that's more than enough stupidity to fill several pages worth of bs per month in my cult bs thread. I really don't want or need to see more of their gross shit.

What have I been thinking about? Fungi!
As an interpreter, it is essential to ask yourself the following questions: where do you find inspiration and how does it motivate and drive you? For me, I find inspiration in learning more about nature around me. This motivates me to share this information with others and hopefully generate a sense of stewardship. Passion is an essential ingredient in interpretation and serves as an effective tool for illustrating to others the importance of conservation (Beck et al., 2018). So for this week’s post, I figured I would talk about a topic that I’m recently passionate about; fungi!
Tumblr media
Basidiomycetes from Ernst Haeckel’s 1904 Kunstformen der
More specifically I’d like to tell you about what most people will call a mushroom. Mushrooms are just one group in the kingdom of fungi. They come from a major division called Basidiomycota which also includes many other groups that may be mistakenly called mushrooms or not recognized as fungi at all. These include chanterelles, boletes, polypores, bracket fungi, and many more. Basidiomycota is filamentous fungi composed of hyphae that reproduce sexually through specialized spores.
Tumblr media
Thomas J. Volk, in Encyclopedia of Biodiversity (2001)
But now what does that mean. Well, what you see in terms of these fungi is just the tip of an iceberg. In reality, around 95% of these fungi is mycelium, the vast network of cellular strands called hyphae in which its entire life cycle plays out. Fungi regulate the flow of energy and information throughout these hyphal networks. They use them to consume and distribute energy and can even use adaptive defenses when threatened. The top of the fungi which most people call a mushroom is the fruiting body. This part is responsible for producing and distributing spores that will germinate elsewhere and reproduce.

Picture was taken from GroCycle (2022)
Basidiomycetes are the only major organism that can break down or significantly modify lignin, a key structural component of wood. As such this major group of fungi plays a critical role in the cycling of nutrients in ecosystems. The fungi’s spores or mycelium enter through wounds, dead branches, branch stubs, tree stumps, or damaged roots and use enzymes to break down wood and organic matter to nutrients. Most species, they release spores in wet seasons to increase their chances of germination. Therefore, you’ll often see them on dead or dying trees in early spring or fall.
Fungi tend to get very mixed reactions of delight and disgust. Personally, what has intrigued me about this group of fungi is that many are edible and have traditionally been used for medicine. For example, Ganoderma lucidum has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for the prevention or treatment of many diseases including cancer (Han & Qin, 2014). Many fungi are recognized as a dietary supplement to aid in cognition, gut health, cardiometabolic diseases, and cancer (Harvard School of Public Health, n.d.). Psilocybin and psilocin, the active compounds in “magic mushrooms” are currently gaining interest for treating mental health disorders such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD. While it hasn’t been legalized yet it’s interesting to see growing interest in the use of fungi for a variety of health conditions.
If you’re ever wondering why the mushroom gets invited to all the parties. It’s because he’s a Fungi!
