UK research analysing women’s experiences of prostitution has found that approximately 50 per cent of women became involved before their eighteenth birthday; up to 95 per cent of women in street prostitution are problematic drug users, and over 50 per cent have been raped and/or sexually assaulted, mostly by sex buyers. Women in prostitution are also almost eighteen times more likely to be murdered than women not involved in the trade. And yet the experiences of trauma and neglect suspected by the man I was speaking to, which made him ‘really feel’ for the women, didn’t put him off. After telling me of his apparently heartfelt concerns, he casually explained that when paying for sex he still expected a ‘good service’, which meant, ‘You know, she has to be friendly. She has to be looking like she’s up for it as well, not looking like she can’t be bothered. She’s got to have a service, she’s got to sell it to her customer, make him feel good, relaxed, chilled out. Make him feel horny.’
