[ID: a message from the free melissa lucio and death penalty action campaigns. it has a picture of melissa lucio holding up her hand to the camera. melissa lucio's address is as follows:
I am writing from the Mountainview Unit in Gatesville, Texas, home of the Texas Women's Death Row, which we prefer to call 'Liferow,' to wish everyone a meaningful International Women's Day.
Women's rights are human rights, and while we can celebrate many accomplishments, there is still so much work to be done. Together as sisters on Liferow, we hold onto the hope to abolish the death penalty for everyone, and pray for an end to the discrimination and violence against women that is still happening in Texas and around the world.

As someone who agrees with you that "mutual abuse" doesn't real, can you explain how to explain this to other people, since obviously there are real life Gone Girl or Tom-Shiv type marriages where both partners are awful people who make each other worse, but that's not the same as talking about abuse of the kind discussed in the Depp-Heard case
I feel like that key place to start is that all the people you named are fictional characters, the same way Hannibal Lector is a fictional character. So are the Law & Order villains who spontaneously confess on the stand....I'm not being condescending, I do have a point.
I think what's driving this particular new version of misogyny is people thinking that something being narratively interesting makes it true. It makes an exciting story when the killer is a wealthy genius sociopath who enjoys tormenting the police. It makes an excellent episode of TV to have a courtroom twist where the pretty blonde trophy wife was secretly the abuser all along or when the husband is framed for murder by his resentful wife, who wasn't even pregnant.
The truth is sordid and boring and common. It's men who kill women because they hate and resent women. They get away with it because our society as a whole thinks it's fine to hate and resent women. Homicide is the leading cause of death for pregnant women and their male romantic partners are the ones who kill them. Abusers are boring, predictable people who engage in boring, predictable DARVO and people believe it because our society believes that women as a whole are morally suspect.
While abuse does happen in same sex relationship and there are ways that homophobia and gender stereotypes hide abuse and ways that gay communities (like all marginalized communities) put pressure on victims not to shame the community by naming their abusers. This is a real problem and shouldn't be used as an excuse to deny the reality of violence against women. Intimate partner violence is absolutely gendered violence. Abusive dynamics where a woman abuses or stalks her male partner are incredibly rare and yet are astoundingly common in pop culture, first, because pop culture overwhelmingly reflects the fears/interests of powerful men and then second because it's good storytelling.
Which makes me think about women like Hedda Nusbaum and Melissa Lucio, who the legal system forced into an interesting narrative of the Evil Mother rather than the boring, shameful and depressing truth that these are women who had been beaten and strangled so often that they have brain damage, only two examples of a hidden epidemic of women with brain damage related to domestic abuse, which might dwarf the CTE epidemic in sports.
In real acts of violence there's no fantastic Columbo moment where a make-up compact reveals a massive deception. It's just another man who beat a woman and lied about it, one of millions.

adnan syed should have been released but i sure wish the good people of the internet would rally around women behind bars the same way they do men accused of killing women. yeah there was energy for cyntoia brown and melissa lucio but those were such extreme circumstances (convicted as a minor essentially to death and convicted literally to death for a crime that rarely gets the death penalty anyway). like when they killed lisa montgomery i don’t feel that many people rallied for her even though her story was unbelievably tragic.

Name: Vida Navedo Species: Human Occupation: Waitress and Aspiring Chef at Veggie Tables Age: 31 Years Old Played by: Mica Face Claim: Melissa Barrera
"Mami will make it right. They'll know, everyone will."
Vida was born in Etla, Mexico and was raised as the only daughter to Esmeralda and Juan Navedo. Esmeralda and Juan did not expect to have a child in their older age so when their daughter was born they gave her the name of life, Vida. Vida was a vibrant child, taking an interest in gardening the local produce that her family was in charge of as well as cooking with fresh ingredients. She found peace in the kitchen amongst the food and ingredients. Growing up she took a liking to a group of hunters, among them her best friend Emilio, and her later on husband Gabriel. Neither family approved of Vida as she was not from a line of hunters and was thought to be unaware of what was happening around her. They, however, told her a lot and she knew more than the world let on. She was always fascinated by the existence of the supernatural. There was so much more to the world than they let her know. However, Gabriel was always wary of how much he shared. He wanted to protect her from his world, his abilities. He taught her what he could although she didn’t have his abilities. They knew they wanted one another
At 23, she married Gabriel and at 25 she welcomed her daughter, Luz. Etla was magic to her. She had everything she wanted. Her days were spent cooking and spending time with her daughter while in the evenings, Gabriel taught her everything he knew. In the years that came occurred the massacre that Lucio organized and everything that she trusted and counted on was gone in minutes. Gabriel was gone, along with her parents and Emilio (or so she thought). Vida was left with a young Luz and fled North to find safety. In the years that came, she decided that the safest place was out of Mexico, immigrating with her daughter as far away as she could go. She ended up in Maine, following stories of a hub of the supernatural in White Crest. She settled down with Luz and started working her way up at Veggie Tables.
Later on she found Emilio once again and started uncovering the pieces of their past in hopes to prevent another downfall of their people in the future. Slowly, Vida became obsessed with uncovering the identities of those who committed the massacres and for ways to stop them. Looking at young Luz every day without her grandparents, cousins, or father made Vida decide enough was enough and that if not even hunters could keep them safe, she’d do something about it. Despite being human, she is ruthless and determined to keep her old city and new town out of the wrong hands, willing to make any and all connections that will allow her to keep what she's found, safe.
Character Facts:
Personality: Selfless, loyal, gentle, kind, cautious, pessimistic, rigid, perfectionist
She is generally good natured and once she finds someone she can genuinely trust she holds onto them and doesn't let them go. However, due to past events it takes a lot to gain her trust especially with a child. The wellbeing of her daughter is everything to her.
Vida knows more than most about the supernatural thanks to her husband's status as a well known hunter and from her friendship with Emilio. She was once fascinated by the unknown, but grew weary of everyone after the massacre.
It took a couple years for Vida to make it to White Crest. She and Gabriel had planned to immigrate via the diversity lottery which had granted them the path to citizenship. However, she made the move on her own after his death.
Vida still struggles with her English although she tries to speak as much as possible in both Spanish and English with Luz. She prioritizes Luz always and on school breaks she often has Luz with her at the restaurant.
When she isn't working at Veggie Tables, she is keeping tabs on local vampires and history to try and connect them with what happened to her family.

Death penalty anon again, thanks for answering that so nicely and giving tons of links. I felt like an idiot asking so the explanation was really helpful ♥️ (you don't have to post this)
I'm glad you asked and I'm glad you took the time to read my reply. Asking questions is good!! If you want more info, I suggest you check out the following:
John Oliver talking about execution on Last Week Tonight
Death Penalty Action Linktree
And individual cases:
Melissa Lucio, (there is a documentary on Netflix as well!) Was recently taken off death row. She was sentenced to execution after an accident resulted in the death of her daughter.
Pervis Payne, was recently removed from death row. He has an intellectual disability which made it unconstitutional to execute him. He is innocent as well.
Paul Hildwin (tw for cancer) was on death row for 35 years.
Kosoul Chanthakoummane is currently an innocent person on death row who may be executed this month! The family of the victim in this case is against his execution and believes that he is innocent as well.

One more reason to end the Death Penalty. At the very least, those responsible for suppressing evidence which could have cleared this woman should face serious penalties.

Tumblr media
Read the full article
