#mentor!Orik
Text
Orik is a tragically underrated character
Not only is he one of eragons only genuine friends, but he’s also a mentor, and probably the only person other than roran who seems to truly care more about eragon the person than eragon the rider. He sees eragon as a human being, not “the chosen one”. i get that he’s a side character, but characters like orrin and trianna, who play considerably smaller roles in the narrative, get a lot more attention from the fanbase. can we get some appreciation for our short king?

Incoherent Rambling about Copernica and Armilly: Part 1
This took about an hour to do LMAO. ignore any and all spelling mistakes please! It'll be under the cut. Steamworld Quest Spoiler warning. (Tumblr has an image limit so this is part 1)
Tumblr media
It's established from the beginning that Copernica and Armilly are close friends, as Copernica states that she had to 'pull Armilly from bed in order to get her to come' when they are looking for the peppermint puffer. They're close friends and they are extremely different.
Tumblr media
We don't know how long its been since Copernica left the college. at this point in the game, you don't even know Why Copernica left the college. Armilly doesn't push, she might know, she might not. She's just excited to be out doing 'heroic deeds', and to be with her friend. Even in the beginning, it’s shown that Copernica understands Armilly, even asking her to take the lead because she gets restless.
Tumblr media
Despite Copernica seeming annoyed at Armilly at times, it's very obvious how close they are. This can be seen throughout the game's dialogue and even art of them. In chapter 1, Armilly talks about spooking a coglin, and instead of brushing her off, Copernica wants to know. After giving her another hint on startling, armilly's obviously excited. Early game Copernica Does tease armilly quite a bit. she seems not impressed, but in fact amused at Armilly's seeming love of heroism. I'd just put this to the two being close friends. Armilly doesn't seem hurt by it, she just keeps on going.
Tumblr media
Even early on in game, both Copernica and Armilly use the 'deployt knowledge practically, for the good of the many' back and forth. While talking to Copernica, Armilly uses it, when the main trio finally come together.
Tumblr media
When meeting Hyapathia, Armilly is standing up for Copernica, demanding to know who Hyapathia is. She sees Copernica's reaction to learning about Hyapathia, and watches her grapple with the fact that her mentor is now her enemy. Even when Hyapathia asks Copernica to join her, Armilly watches in silence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After fighting Hyapathia, Copernica and Armilly have a moment. Armilly Knew how much Hyapathia meant to Copernica. She knew that this must've hurt her greatly. Her words are few, and she's eerily calm. The reckless and loud knight is being quiet because she knows that Copernica is hurt right now. The chapter 11 art shows Armilly with Orik on top of the merchant's wagon. Armilly is most likely just giving Copernica time to grieve/giving her space. She went through a lot.

ohohoho thank you for asking this *rubs my hands together like a lil raccoon*

Goldilock's basically my personification of the person I hope to be some day. Selfless and resourceful, using her circumstances to make her tiny impact on the world a good one. In the Mentor!Orik AU she's a shoulder to lean on for Orik and little Armilly, and does all she can to make their lives better. However she knows she has limits and boundaries of her own and that there are some problems that she just can't solve. she's also very strong because I want to be very strong and buff someday
this has been mentioned before but her family is slightly wealthy (Many of them are blacksmiths, her grandmother is the one that crafted her golden lock of hair). This has landed her in a rather fortunate spot; she was able to achieve her dream of moving to the woods and living in a cozy cabin. This is not her only goal, however; she eventually opens a stable to take care of folks' horses (which will be mentioned in a fic eventually so shhhh ;D). She funds this by supporting the family business: she lives in close proximity to Darkfrost Ridge and mines whatever precious minerals and valuable ore she can get her hands on, shipping it to her family's smithy.
Goldilock is very good at accidentally intimidating every new person she meets. With her massive size it's hard for her to not be scary at first glance lol. She also struggles with coming to terms that there are some things she just can't fix.
uhhhh I can't think of anything else that doesn't spoil things (aside from things that you know at least :P) so some random things now:
-I originally made her demi panromantic but after thinking on it a bit, she's definitely aro/ace. Another thing that's like me lol -She has a braid on the back of her head! I just never draw her from the back so I haven't really had a reason to draw it yet lol -Very warm and cuddly and gives good hugs -She played the guitar growing up and will still occasionally play it when she's by herself or when she thinks someone needs it -loves loves LOVES wind. Loves the way it makes her jacket billow around, loves the way it tussles her hair, loves how it feels on her face. -plays with her hair when she's anxious -She gives little Armilly a LOT of piggyback rides. She also gives Armilly a LOT of cocao

Yesterday I downloaded some new brushes and played with them for a little bit and made the landscape. Then, on a whim, I decided to add in Mentor!Orik and a small Armilly - which took me longer to draw than the rest of it.
Loosely based on my friend @sw-seibellissima's Quest fanfic, Warm My Heart. (Well, the first part at least.)

Some fluff? Okay, so I'm planning to integrate Baby!TnT into the Mentor!Orik AU because why not and Armilly basically becomes a big sister to them. She's a little too rough around them at first and Orik has to show her to be gentle but otherwise she's a very good big sister
Ohmigosh that's incredible and VERY cute. I bet Armilly would absolutely adore them to bits and be thrilled to play with them (but again, she might need to be reminded to be gentle).
(I'm home now and doing better but thank you 😊)

My Fanfics and Original Stories
So I’ve been sitting around, knowing I should post something here but entirely unsure as to what. And I’ve finally decided! What better introduction to me as a writer, as a shipper, than for me to start things off by posting links to the stories that I’m OK with sharing and telling a bit about my thoughts and impressions for each? I will also be including links to each mentioned story and a synopsis at the end of the post so you can visit them and read if you so desire.
The first story I want to share is my Fairy Tail fanfiction. To be honest, I don’t even remember where or when I first got the idea to write this, but I’m so glad that I started it because it has grown to be one of my favorites! Through a lot of hard work, equal portions by me and my #1 Beta Sandry-Chan, and only two revisions, Fairy Tail: Dawn of Change (I’ll be using the acronym DoC for this one) is about a young girl who doesn’t fit in the real world and wishes desperately to be somewhere else. After a magical day at an anime convention, she wakes up in an animated meadow. Naturally, her first thought is that this is all a dream, but the bruise on her thigh says otherwise. She wanders until she collapses and when she wakes up again she is in a hotel bedroom, being watched by Natsu Dragneel, Happy the Cat, and Lucy Heartfilia; three central characters to her favorite anime Fairy Tail. And that is just the start of her adventure! From there, things are exciting and depressing by turns, shifting from euphoria and the epitome of “OMG!!” to “What did I land in?!” But despite everything, Roxanne perseveres and proves that she is a true Fairy. I love this story not just because of how much blood, sweat and tears I have poured into this, but also because of how similar Roxanne and I are, and how I could channel my own daydreams into her experiences and live out my dreams through her. I also did a lot of pre-writing planning, and I planned things that might not even be used. But if they become needed, then I’ll be ready! I also had to do a lot of research, into the individual magics and the rules for magic, and figuring things out to fill in gaps, and research into how a nine year old thinks! And Sandry also pinpointed some trouble areas for ms to work on, and I strengthened my Showing not Telling. Because of this fic, I feel like I’ve really grown as a writer and that also contributes to my love for this fic. So I really recommend that you read this fic! Also, since it starts at the beginning and explains almost everything as things become relevant, you really don’t need to have any Fairy Tail background to read DoC!!
The next book I wanna talk about is my original idea, inspired by the wonder of freshman year of high school; new friends, new experiences, and a new fascination with dragons. Dragon Girl (the acronym is DG) is my first real attempt at storywriting, my pride and joy. The overall story hasn’t changed much and I still remember almost everything I figured out. DG is about a teenager who can shapeshift into a dragon. Surrounded by humans, she lives in an abusive household and believes herself to be the only one like her. She almost kills herself doing chores and homework everyday, biding her time, waiting until she can move out on her own. But she has trust issues because every time she opens her heart and tells the other person about ‘the dragon’ they end up running away and hating her. And that, of course, puts her life in danger in addition to the damage her heart sustains. In spite of that, she finally finds the courage to fly away and she ends up discovering that she is actually part of an ancient race called Drakons, and she is a very special Drakonian. She helps to rebuild this dying race and she is instrumental in the war against the natural enemy called Scylla. I love this story because it marks where I first started getting serious about writing, and I use it as a landmark for how I used to be and where I am now. Also, its gotten the most attention despite its unrevised writting, telling not showing state, usually one to three people favorite it EVERY DAY. And I have a deal with a graphic artist for a comic book adaptation. So I am very proud of Dragon Girl for a variety of reasons and I hope that you’ll read it.
The third book I want to share is the first in a four-part saga, a fanfiction based off of Christopher Paolini’s bestselling series 'The Inheritance Cycle’ (the acronym will be IC) The first part of the original series was remade into a movie named after the first book in the saga, Eragon, in 2007. Even though it was a blockbuster hit that summer, fans in the IC fandom did not enjoy it. In my opinion, while the movie preserved the overall gist of Eragon and Saphira’s adventures, there was a lot of stuff that was changed or omitted. In the movie, Brom and Eragon killed the three Ra'zac that pursued them in Palancar Valley. However, Eragon and his cousin Roran are the true heroes in Brisingr, and are responsible for defeating the two Ra'zac while Saphira killed the two Lethrblakas herself. This was a huge mistake on the movie’s part because now there is no one to kidnap Roran’s love Katrina, and Carvahall would not be attacked and subsequently burned to the ground. Thus, Roran would not lead the villagers to the Burning Plains in time to help the Varden in the battle against the Imperial Army. Also, Brom was not struck by an arrow as he rescued Eragon from Gil'ead, he was struck by a knife coated in an oil by the Ra'zac outside of Teirm after Murtagh jumped in to help. Also, Eragon was captured by Imperial Soldiers in Gil'ead just after Brom’s death, and the ordeal resulted in Eragon meeting the Shade, Durza, and discovering the woman he had been seeing his dreams was a prisoner as well, and that’s when he rescued Arya. The movie also got several other things wrong, like barely showing Orik and not even mentioning Hrothgar and the Twins. On the other hand, I enjoyed seeing Saphira and hearing her voice. Anyway, my fanfiction series is based off of the books, and called Wyrda, and the first installment of four is called Istalri. In this first book, an orphan elf and her brother are introduced, oppressed by their tyrannical uncle. They dream of becoming Riders because that is the only fate they can stand until they are old enough to retake their family home. One night, one of the dragon eggs they hold hatches, and its the girl who begins her journey. Like Eragon before her, she will face new challenges and overcome obstacles as she helps to rebuild the Rider Order. She is surrounded by mentors Murtagh, Eragon and Arya and their dragons, and she has to carve her own future out of the bedrock of her life. I enjoy writing this because I relied on the canon series so heavily so it was a great excuse to read the series again and even write a letter to Paolini himself to ask questions, and I get to bring life to Alanna and Dusan, two obscure characters that we glance at only once in Brisingr. I get to make them fully rounded, unique characters that are this perfect, unstoppable team when they’re together, and still terrifying when they are apart. I get to give them a past, a life, and a future full of hopes and dreams and a healthy dose of reality. Istalri is also the ninth edition of this series, and is my first legitimate fanfiction that I wrote out of sheer pleasure when I was only 12 years old, in 7th grade. It gave me something to discuss with a woman who would later become my best friend close enough to be my sister, and, through her, another sister. Because of Istalri, I got to develop relationships that I even now must lean on to survive my life. I couldn’t be prouder of Istalri, and I hope that you will read it and come to love it as much as I do.
Thank you.

I THINK THIS IS AS FAR AS I’M GONNA GET WITH THIS SO HERE
I've had all the major events in the Mentor!Orik AU set in stone for a while now. It wasn't until a little while after finishing Pankapu did I notice there were some cinematic parallels between Djaha'rell's backstory and the later events of the AU. The realization inspired me to do a little redraw of one of the game's memoliths (Also technically a redraw of one of the 3DS doodles):
Tumblr media
So uh... if you've played Pankapu and you know what happened I might have potentially spoiled things but oh well this was self-indulgent and I had fun drawing it

Can I hear more about the Mentor Orik AU
Oh sure! I haven’t really talked about it in detail since like, last year, when I was still drawing on my 3DS and things have changed a lot since then.
To start things off, Orik and Gilgamech fight the Behemoth at the young, young age of 16, all by themselves. I should mention that the fandom’s general headcanon is that the original Behemoth fight is when when Orik gets his arm hurt—that is not the case in this AU—he instead gets it hurt a few years later by Gilgamech (I would elaborate on this, but uh... it wanders into spoiler territory).
So, six years pass and Gilgamech decides he isn’t satisfied with the attention they’ve received for literally saving the world (yeah he becomes like that™ much earlier lol) and he tries to get Orik to go on some risky adventures with him. Orik on the other hand is SICK of it and he wants to rest. They argue and Orik ends up running away, past Goosebucket and into the woods—where he finds a small, shy and timid Armilly, six years old at the time, trying to beat a coglin with a huge sword she found. She’s obviously having trouble so he comes to her rescue and slays it.
What Orik doesn’t know is that a biased author has, sometime in those six years, written a book about about his and Gilgamech’s escapades. It’s called the Hero’s Handbook and Armilly is absolutely obsessed with it. She’s starstruck when she realizes the sidekick of the legendary hero just saved her, and after she gets over her initial shock she starts telling him excitedly about how much she adores them, and how she wants to be a hero one day too!
Orik is touched by this little girl’s passion. So after settling down in Goosebucket (because he doesn’t plan to go back to Gilgamech anytime soon) he meets up with her and her parents a few times and eventually, he decides to take her under his wing as his protege, and train her to be a hero the best he can.
Armilly is ecstatic about this, of course, and she tells everyone about how he’s teaching her and it’s so exciting for her and she loves the training, even if it’s a bit tough. Both her and Orik form a very strong bond, Orik’s heart eventually softens and Armilly comes more out of her shell. He’s like a second father to her.
Things start getting a little spoilery around here—Orik and Armilly meet Goldilock around two years after he starts teaching her. Gilgamech eventually catches wind of what Orik’s been up to. Armilly becomes a strong warrior, even at a young age and is ready to protect both her family, friends and mentor at all costs.
Oh yeah and Orik eventually finds baby Tarah and Thayne (I integrated that AU into this one because I wanted to lol) but that’s gonna be like, at least six years after he’s started mentoring Armilly. He adopts them and Armilly becomes a big sister to them, essentially
That’s all I can really say until I have at least one of the stories posted but I can assure you there will be angst and fluff
(some old 3DS doodles of the AU are under the cut, the first pic is introductory doodles, second are concept doodles of the three fics I have planned, third is a colored pic of Goldilock that is lacking some details)

What do Armilly's friends think of her Shenanagins in the Mentor!Orik AU
I actually haven't put that much thought into it ajdnfafansfm
They're all like 7 when things start happening and she meets Orik and they know how much she loves them and their heroism so when they find out he's mentoring her they're probably excited and happy for her. She often shows off all the cool sword moves she learns to them and they think it's really cool
Ummm things get pretty angsty after that so I don't wanna spoil too much... oh yeah whenever Orik comes around they get REALLY shy lol. They eventually warm up to him though.

Good morning I’m still sad about yesterday so I finished up some fluffy doodles to help me feel better
Some basic introductory doodles for the Mentor!Orik AU! The backstory for this AU in a nutshell is that Gilgamech started up his crap earlier and Orik ran off to Goosebucket, went into the woods, found babby Armilly (7 at that point) trying to fight a coglin all by herself with a much too big sword she found. He took her under his wing as his student, “borrowed” some armor from The Void army and they’ve been super good friends ever since!
(Also if you’re wondering what’s going on in that top right doodle, Orik’s leaning forward and we never really see what’s inside the thing around his neck... I didn’t know what to put there lol)
EDIT: Forgot to tag @sbuggbot, I drew from her design for baby Armilly (For the hair at least)
