Free Hugs
Tags: @millythegoat, @alissonbecksfan234
Robertson had been sulky the whole morning. After being dropped to the bench for the Merseyside derby, he’d had a fight with Tsimikas on who was the better fullback. It had to be broken up by Van Dijk, who had then proceeded to yell at the two wingbacks.
Robertson hated being yelled at, so that had completely set him off his game. He had missed three easy passes during rondos, and now, during the agility runs, he waited for his turn knowing that he would probably crash into one of the plastic dummies.
That was when the Scot felt a pair of arms surround him. They were too big to be Alexander-Arnold’s, but too long to be Milner’s. So who was it?
“Free hugs!”
“Ali!” Robertson chuckled as he tried to extract himself from the goalkeeper’s embrace. This was a normal procedure for the two—one of them would go randomly hug the other. “How did you know?”
“Know what?” Alisson wondered aloud, hugging Robertson tighter.
The Scot quit his struggling and gave in, allowing the Brazilian to lift him off the ground. “That I needed a hug,” he mumbled into Alisson's sweater, inhaling. “Wait, is that lavender I smell?”
“Yeah, it’s my new fabric softener. Thought it’d help me relax better.” Alisson ruffled Robertson’s hair, prompting a couple of muffled protests. “And why’d you need a hug?”
“Rough day,” Robertson confessed. “I…had a fight with Kostas. And Virg yelled at us.”
“Virg yelled at you?” It was enough to make Alisson shudder. The Dutchman rarely even got upset, so Van Dijk yelling at anybody was almost impossible to imagine. “For what?”
“I don’t know, really. About being…unprofessional or something. But I’m trying, I really am.” And that was when Alisson saw just how distressed the incident had really left Robertson.
“You’re one of the hardest workers on the squad, Robbo.” Alisson reassured the Scot, pulling him in for another hug. It was true; Robertson was one of the few who would stay after training to work out in the gym, taking to the pool if the treadmills, his preferred machines, was in use. “I don’t know why Virg would yell at you.”
“Could you…could you find out why?” Robertson mumbled, hiding his face in Alisson's shirt. “I would try…by myself, but…”
“You’re scared of him.” With one last squeeze, Alisson finally let go of Robertson. “Don’t worry, Robbo. You’ll be laughing with Virg by lunchtime!”
A visibly relieved expression crossed Robertson’s face, and a small grin began to grow and stretch along his jaws. “Thanks, Ali.”
“For what?”
“Robbo, your turn!” Kornmayer yelled over the training ground’s usual din.
Robertson playfully elbowed the goalkeeper, before darting away towards the agility course. “For listening.”

UEFA was responsible for the Champions League final fiasco in Paris last May, while Liverpool supporters were ‘instrumental’ in saving lives on the night, an official inquiry commissioned by the European football governing body has found.
A panel of experts including politicians, academics and lawyers was set up by UEFA itself last summer to investigate the chaotic scenes at the Stade de France, where Liverpool fans including women, children and the disabled were tear gassed by riot police, mugged by armed gangs of local youths, and kettled into dangerous crushes as they tried to enter the stadium to access European football’s showpiece fixture.
The group has now finalised it conclusions which lay the blame firmly at UEFA’s door, with its report saying that the organisation’s pre-match planning was based on an ‘absence of overall control or oversight of safety and security.’
The findings of the 158-page report reveal that senior figures at UEFA were aware that the organisation was ignoring its own safety and security policies in the build-up to the match, but did not act to rectify the situation, throwing into serious doubt the positions of key members of its hierarchy including President Aleksander Ceferin.
Furthermore, there was ‘no evidence’ to support the ‘reprehensible’ claims made by UEFA and the French authorities in the aftermath that masses of ticketless Liverpool fans attempting to gain illegal entry to the match were at fault. ‘Assertions regarding huge numbers of ticketless supporters, and those with fake tickets, have been wrongly inflated and have been stated as fact, to deflect responsibility for the planning and operational failures,’ the report reads.
Instead, the panel’s findings heap praise on fans who attended the game, saying that their behaviour significantly contributed to the narrow avoidance of a ‘mass fatality catastrophe.’
‘The collective actions of Liverpool FC supporters were probably instrumental in protecting vulnerable people and averting what might well have been more serious injuries and deaths,’ the panel found. ‘It is remarkable that no one lost their life.’
