La mayoría de las aventuras
que cuenta de él Alejandro Dumas
en su archifamosa novela
Él CONDE DE MONTECRISTO
son reales y las protagonizó
el propio padre del escritor.
Por dicho descubrimiento, consignado en su libro El conde negro, que edita estos días Flammarion en Francia,
el estadounidense Tom Reiss
ha recibido el Premio Pulitzer
de Biografía 2013.
Su historia del general Thomas-Alexandre Dumas ha sido acogida
con notable entusiasmo por el público galo, siempre tan devoto de sus leyendas nacionales, ya sean estas reales o de ficción.
Con él, ya tienen los franceses
un tercer Dumas que elevar
a los altares, junto con su hijo
Alejandro Dumas Padre, autor de
LOS TRES MOSQUETEROS, y su nieto, ALEJANDRO DUMAS hijo, igualmente conocido como literato por haber firmado
LA DAMA DE LAS CAMELIAS.
¿Quién fue este militar de color
y por qué su vida terminó inspirando
la del primer anti-héroe moderno, EDMUNDO DANTÉS?
Nacido en Haití en 1762, hijo de un aristócrata del Hexágono y una esclava negra de la colonia, mulato y bien parecido, Thomas-Alexandre
llegó a la metrópoli con 14 años
y recibió entrenamiento
en la academia de esgrima de Versalles, convirtiéndose rápidamente
en una de las mejores espadas del país. Luego entró en el ejército
como soldado raso y en seguida
se distinguió por su destreza
con las armas y su valor en el campo
de batalla.
Cuando estalló la revolución,
el exilio o la ejecución de la mayoría
de los nobles galos dejaron libres muchos puestos de oficial y el ambicioso Dumas logró convertirse
en apenas un año en el primer general negro de un ejército occidental.
Todos para uno y uno para todos
"Descubrí la vida del general Dumas cuando era niño, porque me gustaban tanto las obras de su hijo Alejandro
que decidí buscar las memorias
de este. Lo increíble es que, en las primeras 200 páginas, sólo habla de este hombre extraordinario, su padre, que parece una combinación de D'Artagnan con Edmundo Dantés, Porthos, un poco de Aramis...
Todos metidos en un mismo personaje", explica Reiss a su paso por la capital francesa para promocionar el libro.
Fascinado por la figura del llamado Conde Negro, este periodista y escritor neoyorquino de 49 años, que ya tenía experiencia en los libros de no-ficción tras haber publicado anteriores biografías dedicadas a oscuros personajes de la revolución rusa o el nazismo, se puso a rastrear su huella
del abuelo Dumas por archivos oficiales y privados de Francia donde se encontró con asombrosos documentos
El padre de Alejandro Dumas fue el primer general negro de un ejército occidental
"No fue difícil seguir su carrera de armas, ya que los archivos militares franceses están inundados de documentos de 1790. Además, nuestro personaje era un gran espadachín
y había sido general de la revolución, aunque después fuera olvidado y borrado de la historia. Así que encontré muchas descripciones de él
en combate", recuerda el biógrafo.
Lo realmente difícil fue hallar datos
del hombre que se ocultó detrás del excepcional soldado.
Según las enciclopedias, el general fue el cuarto hijo de un señorito de buena familia normanda llamado ALEXANDRE ANTOINE DAVY DE LA PAILLETERIE, que se marchó al Caribe en busca de fortuna pero no tuvo éxito.
Allí vivió durante 30 años amancebado con la esclava negra MARIE-CÉSETTE Dumas, mientras en Francia lo daban por muerto. Y cuando quiso volver
a casa para reclamar su herencia, su castillo y su título, estaba tan arruinado que tuvo que vender a su hijo ALEX como esclavo.
Reiss afirma haberse topado, en sus pesquisas, incluso con el documento que permitió a DE LA PAILLETERIE
volver a comprar a su hijo una vez
que heredó su fortuna.
Y también con el relato manuscrito
del propio general en el que cuenta algunas de sus batallas así como los dos años que pasó en prisión
cuando el ambicioso NAPOLEÓN BONAPARTE decidió quitar de en medio a un rival que destacaba tanto como él en el terreno de la estrategia.
"Sus hazañas militares inspiraron
las aventuras de los mosqueteros
y su terrible experiencia en el calabozo, El CONDE DE MONTECRISTO",
afirma el biógrafo.
El general Dumas murió de cáncer
a los 43 años, cuando su hijo Alejandro sólo tenía cuatro y su nombre se fue olvidando. La única estatua erigida
en su honor fue destruida por los nazis cuando invadieron París en 1940.
Pero su nombre sigue grabado
entre los de otros héroes nacionales,
en la columna 23 del Arco de Triunfo.
