"Two Drunks Grateful For Jail Sentences," Montreal Star. July 26, 1943. Page 3. ---- Two accused who pleaded guilty to charges of drunkenness before Recorder Aime Leblanc this morning asked that they be sent to jail. Their requests were granted.
One man believed that a spell in a cell would curb his passion for alcohol. The second asked for a jail term in which to recover from and be treated for a badly battered face suffered during a drunken brawl.
Both were given eight days in jail for which they thanked the Recorder.

Happy birthday, Fred Rose! (December 7, 1907)
The only Communist to ever be elected to the Canadian House of Commons, Fred Rose, birth name Fishel Rosenberg, was born to a Jewish family in what is now Poland before emigrating to Canada at 13. He began his affiliation with the Communist Party at 18, and served jail time in the 1930s for his political activities. He ran for office several times, and was elected in 1943, and then re-elected in 1945, with strong support from Montreal's Jewish population. Cold War anticommunism brought Rose down, and he was convicted of spying for the Soviet Union and expelled from Parliament. After his release, he went to Poland, and never returned to Canada. He died in 1983.

The governments of Quebec and New Brunswick have told the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) they will stop incarcerating migrants detained for administrative reasons, Radio-Canada/CBC has confirmed. Seven provinces have now cancelled their contracts with CBSA under which they were paid to imprison foreign nationals detained under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. "It is excellent news," said Montreal immigration lawyer Chantal Ianniciello, who represents many detained migrants. "It is not a place suited to their needs". Ianniciello said when migrants are cut off from the world and put in jail alongside criminals it creates "a lot of psychological stress." CBSA can detain migrants if it considers their identity is not clearly established, they are a danger to the public or they represent a flight risk. According to its own statistics, most are detained for the latter reason, meaning the border agency believes they will not appear for immigration processes such as a removal. [...]

Trivia Break: Dr Morgentaler
So, with the anti-choice bullshit in the US and Italy's decision to allow anti-choice protesters to actually enter abortion clinics, I would like to introduce you all to Dr Henry Morgentaler. If you're Montrealais, or really into very obscure quasi-ska alt-rock, you'll know the name from the band Me Mom & Morgentaler. Here's why.
Dr Henry Morgentaler was born in Poland 101 years ago. He was Jewish. He ended up in Dachau. He survived, and emigrated to Canada - Montreal specifically. He entered medical practice. He was one of the first doctors in Canada to perform vasectomies, IUD insertions, and provide birth control pills to unmarried women. In 1955. In Montreal, Quebec. Now, please keep in mind that Quebec was really, reeeeeeally Catholic until the 1960s, and the decrease in the sheer volume of Catholicism in Quebec was pretty slow. So here's this guy who went to a hugely Catholic province, went into family planning, and did a whole bunch of stuff that the Catholic Church hates. Buuuuut I guess anyone who survived Dachau had no fucks to give.
In 1967, he spoke before the Health and Welfare Committee stating that women should be able to have safe, legal abortions. This made news - I mean, very Catholic province, abortion is so very illegal, and there's this family planning guy saying this. And to his surprise, he gets a lot of women calling him, visiting his clinic ... all wanting - needing, let's be fair - abortions. And he had to tell them no. He tried referring them, but the only doctors he could refer them to "were no longer available". (I refuse to look too hard into what that means.)
And then, in 1968, he said "Fuck a bunch of this", gave up his family practice, and opened a private clinic that performed abortions as well as contraception etc. Again - survived Dachau. Really had zero fucks to give about the threat of Canadian prison.
Thing is, he went to court three times over this in the early 70s. At all three trials, his defense was that he had to do this to safeguard the life and health of these women who came to him, because there was no safe recourse for them and they'd end up harming themselves or worse by either trying to terminate their pregnancy themselves or going to some back-alley butcher in desperation.
On the strength of the testimonials of the women who'd gone to his clinic, the jury of the first trial acquitted him. Jury nullification - they refused to uphold a law they felt was unjust. Unfortunately, the judge overturned this acquittal, basically on the argument of, "The danger to the woman wasn't immediate and she could have just had the baby" and Morgentaler was sentenced to 18 months in prison.
The year he started serving his sentence, Prime Minister Trudeau (the old one, not the current one) changed the law so that judges weren't allowed to just overturn acquittals - which is actually now known as the Morgentaler Amendment in the Criminal Code.
His second trial happened while he was still in jail. The jury acquitted him in another act of jury nullification, and the judge couldn't just overturn the acquittal. The third one happened when he was in the hospital, after having suffered a heart attack in prison. Once again, jury nullification - acquitted.
1976: The Parti Quebecois, the provincial government at the time, went, "Okay, if juries will never convict them, this is pointless" and got all the remaining charges dropped. Later that year, abortion was legalised in Quebec.
So then he started doing this in other provinces. And the same thing happened - police tried to shut him down, tried him for illegal abortion, jury nullification, acquittal. This time, the judge turned it down again; couldn't turn it into a conviction, but ordered a new trial. "Fine", said Morgentaler. "Let's flag up that this anti-abortion law violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms because it interferes with a woman's right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". So unlike Roe vs Wade, it focused on human rights rather than just civil rights.
He won, more or less. There were to be no criminal restrictions on the provision of abortions - it was left to medical law. So they can't just make abortions illegal. Restrict? Yes - some provinces restricted access to abortions by only allowing clinics that perform them to be in hospitals, rather than private clinics. And even the provinces that had those restrictions had to drop them in the 90s.
I mean, obviously Morgentaler got some shit. Death threats, bombings, assaults. Again, I guess given what he'd been through, that didn't seem like that big a deal. Imagine surviving that, and then spending your entire life fighting for a woman's right to choose, and have that choice carried out in safety, at the expense of the safety and comfort you fought so hard for.
I don't know if it'd be possible today, what Morgentaler did. He died on 29th May 2013, at age 90. I figure he must have turned in his grave like an express-wagon axle when Roe vs Wade got overturned. But ... here's this guy who came out of hell, moved to the most Catholic province in Canada, and started the kind of pro-choice movement that ended with real change.
And most of all, it started when jury boxes full of people literally said, "We know it's against the law, but given it's a stupid law, we've elected to ignore it".
So here's to Dr Morgentaler, and to the fact that sometimes we can change things. I know everything's stacked so hard against us right now, but ... we do what we can, as hard as we can.

Benjamin Chee Chee (1944 – 1977) was a Canadian artist of Ojibwa descent, born in Temagami, Ontario. Chee Chee's early life was troubled and he lost track of his mother, whom he spent many years searching for. He moved to Montreal in 1965 where he developed his love of drawing, then returned to Ottawa in 1973.
He developed his unique style of clear graceful lines and minimal colour, depicting birds and animals. Though his art featured a great deal of iconography often used by Canadian First Nations artists, Chee Chee had denied his art had symbolic meaning. He instead referred to the animals featured in his art as "creatures of the present".
After finding his mother and achieving success as an artist, Chee Chee died by suicide in an Ottawa jail in 1977, being just 33. (wikipedia)

"The only strange question I got was from [the] Montreal [Canadiens]. Both my parents worked in federal corrections, at the jail. Montreal's sports psychology doctor, he asked me, in honor of your parents, what if your teammate comes up to you one day and he tells you that he shoplifted at a store, and then the next morning you look in the newspaper and see that somebody else went to jail for shoplifting and he was a part of the same group as your teammate. He asked what I what I would do, and I just said nothing, I wouldn't throw my teammate under the bus kind of thing. After I answered it, they kind of just smiled. It was kind of a fun question, I guess."
I am fascinated by the combine lol

what a useless question! as if any hockey literally ever is going to say he'd turn in his bro for shoplifting. how about teams start asking open-ended questions about what you'd do if you heard a rumor that a coaching staff member had sex with your teammate. let's see if any of them know how to answer that one. let's see if anybody asking it even does.

"QUEER CULT HEAD GIVEN JAIL TERM," Montreal Star. May 2, 1933. Page 3. ---- Ovila Girard Guilty of Performing Marriage Without Authority ---- Found guilty of conducting a marriage service without the requisite authority, Ovila Girard, 1818 Visitation street, head of the sect of the Crucified Ones of Visitation Street, was sentenced to jail for one month by Judge Lacroix this morning. A fine of $50 or two more months was added.
Although the case was announced as closed last week, when it was announced that judgment was to be given this morning, Auguste Angers, K.C, Crown Prosecutor, asked this morning that it might be re-opened, in order to allow hearing a witness, Emile Richard, 1076 City Hall avenue, who could not be located before.
THEATRICAL TROUPE Richard said that he and Girard, with seven others, went to Bic as a theatrical troupe, but that Girard soon began to indulge in extravagant actions.
At the alleged marriage service, he said, Girard wore a white robe with a blue sash, and wooden sabots. He swore to hearing Girard say to Matthias Lavallee, the "bridegroom," these words, "Do you take this woman as your future wife?" He did not see any marriage contract or certificate, he said, but he heard someone read a paper certifying that the ceremony was a marriage, signed by Girard, as "pastor." The bridegroom, he added, carried a bouquet of roses during the ceremony.
In his judgment, Judge Lacroix stated that he had no doubt that Girard intended to celebrate a marriage, contrary to the Criminal Code, since he had no authority, and the jail sentence and fine followed.

Note in Flagpole., 4 February 1998, about Neutral Milk Hotel’s show, with of Montreal and the Music Tapes. [source]
transcript:
Neutral Milk Hotel / Music Tapes / Of Montreal
40 Watt Club
This week will be your last chance to catch Neutral Milk Hotel for a great long while, as they are heading out of town for months to tour the world and elsewhere with the likes of Superchunk, Elf Power arid The Gerbils. Go catch Jeff Mangum and the lads before they either get jailed or make it big. Look for their new album 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea’ on Autotonic.
On stage first this evening is local band Of Montreal, the vocal-oriented skiffle group that recently released an EP titled The Bird Who Ate The Rabbit's Flower (Kindercore). According to Dottie Alexander of Summer Hymns, Bryan Helium has officially left the band to serve his Elf Powers. Expect a brand-new set list.
Stuck in the middle are the mysterious Music Tapes, an experimental side project featuring banjo/accordion player Julian Koster and drummer Jeremy Barnes (both of Neutral Milk Hotel) and lord knows who else. They've made plans to bang on luggage, on stringed and wind(ed) instruments, and each other. Watch out for a possible “static television” play-along thingy with a film from Jeremy Ayers. Watch out. Watch out. (BL)

All Emma stans wanna do is bring up her bruised knees but will never look at how in the pics where Evan is comforting her you can see bruises and scratches on his arms and hands and bruises on his face. Scratches and bruises on your forearms and hands like that are defensive wounds meaning he was putting his hands and arms up in front of his face to shield him from her. None of them are smart enough think or actually care who the real victim is to realize that though.
https://twitter.com/tattylou7/status/1360291056215068673?s=46&t=vw4WI8Brl3poq10fUcDT9w here is the link with his injuries circled a few days after the incident. Keep in mind that this is a bit after the night she was arrested so his injuries were worse that actual night. People always say these photos are from when he picked her up from jail but I’m very sure that they were pictures from when the news came out that she had been arrested. And again literally all the factual info that was put out about the arrest shows Emma to have been the aggressor and Evan to be the victim. Her having bruised knees doesn’t mean anything.
yes, thank you. the DV arrest wasn’t even reported until well after the fact! the photos aren’t from montreal. just imagine how different this scenario would be if evan didn’t try to protect emma.
here’s an old article about the photos and incident.

Cat, No. 226 Jackson Street, Mill Hill, Trenton, New Jersey, United States by Billy Wilson Photography "Mill Hill is a historic neighborhood located within the city of Trenton in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. It is considered to be part of Downtown Trenton and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The name Mill Hill refers to central New Jersey's first industrial site, a mill, erected in 1679, at the southeast corner of the present Broad Street crossing of the Assunpink Creek. Mill Hill and its wooden mill were among the holdings of the first settler in the vicinity of Trenton, Mahlon Stacy, a Quaker who arrived in North America in 1678. The mill was destroyed in a flood. Trenton is the capital city of the U.S. state of New Jersey, the county seat of Mercer County and was the capital of the United States from November 1 to December 24, 1784. The city's metropolitan area, consisting of Mercer County, is grouped with the New York Metropolitan Area by the United States Census Bureau, but it directly borders the Philadelphia metropolitan area and was from 1990 until 2000 part of the Philadelphia Combined Statistical Area. As of the 2020 U.S. census, Trenton had a population of 90,871, making it the state's 10th-largest municipality. Trenton dates back at least to June 3, 1719, when mention was made of a constable being appointed for Trenton while the area was still part of Hunterdon County. Boundaries were recorded for Trenton Township as of March 2, 1720. A courthouse and jail were constructed in Trenton around 1720, and the Freeholders of Hunterdon County met annually in Trenton. Trenton received its first Postmaster in 1764. On November 25, 1790, the Trenton became New Jersey's capital, and by November 13, 1792 the City of Trenton was formed within Trenton Township. Trenton Township was incorporated as one of New Jersey's initial group of 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on February 21, 1798. On February 22, 1834, portions of Trenton Township were taken to form Ewing Township. The remaining portion of Trenton Township was absorbed by the City of Trenton on April 10, 1837. A series of annexations took place over a 50-year period, with the city absorbing South Trenton (April 14, 1851), portions of Nottingham Township (April 14, 1856), both the Borough of Chambersburg Township, and Millham Township (both on March 30, 1888), as well as Wilbur Borough (February 28, 1898). Portions of Ewing Township and Hamilton Township were annexed to Trenton on March 23, 1900." - info from Wikipedia. The fall of 2022 I did my 3rd major cycling tour. I began my adventure in Montreal, Canada and finished in Savannah, GA. This tour took me through the oldest parts of Quebec and the 13 original US states. During this adventure I cycled 7,126 km over the course of 2.5 months and took more than 68,000 photos. As with my previous tours, a major focus was to photograph historic architecture. Now on Instagram. Become a patron to my photography on Patreon or donate. https://flic.kr/p/2ockvzp

A Quebec man convicted of promoting hatred against Jews has been sentenced to 15 months in jail and three years of probation. Quebec court Judge Manlio Del Negro said today in a Montreal courtroom that it's clear Gabriel Sohier Chaput hasn't grasped the seriousness of his actions or the harm he's caused to society. Sohier Chaput was found guilty in January, after the judge ruled that a 2017 article published on the neo-Nazi website the Daily Stormer actively promoted hatred of Jewish people. The accused was a frequent contributor to the website, writing more than 800 articles for the online publication named after the Nazi-era propaganda newspaper Der Sturmer.

Hello World!
Tumblr media
Simon Fraser here. I was quite the adventurer back then so I have decided to document my findings. Here's a little get to know me...
I was born on May 20, 1776 in Mapletown, Hoosick Township, New York.
Tumblr media
I was the youngest of 10 children. My parents, Simon Fraser of Culbokie and Guisachan, and Isabel Grant of Daldreggan came with his regiment to North America in 1773. But in 1777, father was captured at the Battle of Bennington and died in 1779 as a prisoner in Albany Jail.
Even after the war ended, my family was still being harassed by rebels. That is why mother and us kids moved to Canada with her in 1784. So one of my uncles, Captain John Fraser, one of the brothers who had served in fathers regiment and was a judge, helped us settle near Coteau-du-Lac, west of Montreal.

aw shucks thanks i named myself after the ninja turtle. and oh boy DO i
Emmanuel by TK and the Holy Know Nothings has been on repeat for like the last week for me and the rest of their stuff is great esp in you like more bluesy/groovey country. i will ALWAYS rec AJJ and they're newest album is really great esp I Wanna Be Your Dog 2 but my fav album of theirs is Knife Man- they're kinda quintessential folk punk. Whatever (I Had a Dream) by the Butthole Suffers is great as well as their song Shame of Life or Pepper- these guys are like classic punk. Smith and Jones Forever, Candy Jail, and Random Rules- all by the Silver Jews are on my permanent song rotation, they're kinda rock/countryish. some just random specific songs i'm into rn are Fish Eyes by Haley Heynderickx, The End of Jason Todd by the Smyrk, I Love Myself by Playboy ManBaby, Far From Home by August James, It's Different For Girls by of Montreal, Habibi by Tamino, i'm going home by pat the bunny, and We Begged 2 Explode by Jeff Rosenstock
