Mr. Schmidt: Mr. Speaker, in the time that I have left, I just want to address some of the comments from some of the government members that we’ve heard weigh in on the debate. First of all, let me thank my colleagues from West Yellowhead and from Cardston-Siksika for some reasonably solid jokes, at least on the UCP spectrum, talking about damaging hippos and hypocrites and worrying about our dad remarrying to somebody else and not telling us. In the UCP humour spectrum those were solid jokes, so a metaphorical tip of the hat to those members for bringing some levity to the debate.

“RESULT OF RIOT: Soldiers Bar Japanese From Immigration Building Area,” Vancouver Province. May 14, 1942. Page 25. ----- Soldiers surrounding the immigration building, where 130 Japanese rioted on Wednesday, had orders today to bar Japanese visitors from the ramps at the foot of Granville and Burrard, to prevent recurrence of yesterday's outburst, when the inmates of the building broke windows, hurled rubbish to the grounds and played a fire hose on soldiers.
The Japanese, who are held in the building because they refused to entrain for work camps without their families, began "yammering" early Wednesday afternoon in protest of a new rule barring visitors.
FRAME BROKEN A steel-grated window frame was broken loose and dropped to the ground three storeys below and a fire hose was turned out of the open window. Toilet paper and newspapers were thrown out as the Japanese waved and shouted to friends gathered on the waterfront ramp.
Austin C. Taylor, chairman of the B. C. Security Commission, which ordered the men held when they refused to report for work camps, termed the outburst "more playful than anything else."
"There was nothing malicious about the trouble," said Mr. Taylor. "Some of the Japanese just got a little fed up about being kept in the building and jot a little exuberant. There was more yelling than anything else."
PLASTER NOT BROKEN. He denied that plaster had been pried loose from the walls and thrown out. He said he had visited the building and found no evidence of it.
Mr. Taylor said that until Wednesday Japanese girls and wives of the men housed in the building had been allowed to talk with them at a distance through iron-grated windows. Stopping of this practice, he said, was probably the cause of the outburst.
Army guard reinforcements were posted on the ramp and crowds of Japanese visitors compelled to withdraw beyond shouting distance of the building. To day guards said they had orders to keep Japanese south of the Marine Building, and to keep them away from the ramp extension of Burrard and Granville.
“Statement in House: Japs in City Rioting Will Be Interned,” Vancouver Province. May 14, 1942. Page 1. ---- By TOUCHY ANDERSON. Daily Province staff Correspondent === OTTAWA. May 14 - One hundred and thirty Japanese who rioted in Vancouver immigration hall will be interned. Labor Minister Humphrey Mitchell announced this determination in the House today. He said that the men had previously refused to proceed to an Ontario road camp.
Troops today stood guard over the immigration Building at the foot of Burrard to bar Japanese visitors and prevent a repetition of the outburst in which windows were smashed, rubbish hurled out and a fire hose played at on soldiers.
Guards at the building where the Japanese are held will be increased, Mr. Mitchell said.
MOVE FAST AS POSSIBLE. Coast Japanese were being moved east of the Cascade Mountains as last as possible, he told George Cruickshank (Lib., Fraser Valley) who asked questions about the disorders at Vancouver.
Mr. Mitchell said the Hastings Park camp, where Japanese are held prior to being moved east of the mountains, is not a permanent establishment.
Mr. Mitchell gave figures to show that, out of a total of 22,084 Japanese to be dealt with in the movement away from the Pacific Coast, 4300 had been removed from the so-called "vulnerable" points and a total of 9313 had been handled in the whole movement to date.
On May 11 last there were 2555 individuals at Hastings Park clearing station.
Road camp developments had taken 2285 males, distributed as follows: Blue River Yellowhead, 1290; Revelstoke-Sicamous, 417; Hope-Princeton, 237, and Schreiber, Ont., 341.
TO INTERIOR. Movement to abandoned British Columbia towns had absorbed 1021 Japanese, distributed as follows: Greenwood, 812; Kaslo, 185; Slocan, 22, and Sandon, 2.
Movement to sugar beet fields was progressing. Alberta had absorbed 1635 and Manitoba 720.
Japanese who have undertaken to support themselves if assisted in finding a location have been moved to the total of 316 families distributed as follows:
Christina Lake, 80; Bridge River and Minto City, 150; Lil-looet, 51, and Westwold, 35.
Picture caption: MORNING AFTER Peace was restored on the waterfront today as armed guards stood between the immigration building and Japanese who sought to visit friends and relatives there. Wednesday a riot broke out in the building among 130 Japanese detained for refusing to go to work camps without their families.
Result was slight damage and a great litter on the ground outside the building. A clutter of paper, a bed-spring, chairs and iron bars broken out of a window-frame on the fourth floor where inmates "yammered" Wednesday and turned a fire hose on soldier guards. Japanese are seen leaning out of the windows through which they tossed the rubbish and shouted to crowds of Japanese visitors nearby. Lower right picture shows a Japanese woman waving to a relative in the building. Lower left picture shows rioters, told they would be interned, who had to clean up the mess.

Daddy Day Care Underwater
Tumblr media
I first encountered a male jawfish with a mouth stuffed with eggs in 2010 whereas diving in Wakatobi Nationwide Park, in Indonesia, whereas doing impartial undergraduate analysis. His big eyes have been nearly comical, and his overflowing jaw jogged my memory of a three-year-old that had simply stuffed a complete piece of birthday cake in his mouth. The sight gave me phantom TMJ ache, and I keep in mind loosening my chunk on my regulator to do some jaw stretches. I snapped a photograph and went on my means, not realizing how particular (and uncommon) the encounter was. I had labored as a divemaster in Zanzibar, so I had a good quantity of expertise finding hard-to-find organisms. Nonetheless, it could be years earlier than I discovered one other mouthbrooding male fish. Regardless of that have, I didnít know a lot about mouthbrooding fish till a serious snowstorm hit Colorado proper earlier than a scientific convention in New Orleans. My lab mate, who research them, was trapped in a number of ft of snow with a cancelled flight, unable to make it out. For some inexplicable purpose, I volunteered to offer her presentation for her. Iíd watched her apply discuss earlier than I left, however that was the extent of my data on the topic. Iím a marine biologist, however I research disco clams and donít concentrate on something that truly has a spine. The Q&A apart (ìagain, this isn't truly my researchÖî), the presentation went fairly wellóand in the end re-ignited my curiosity on this distinctive group of animals. Trying to find mouthbrooding fish is like an underwater treasure huntóexcept that you just donít have a map, and there are many fish with out eggs to distract you alongside the best way. I've gone whole journeys with out discovering a mouthbrooding male; itís the last word letdown. If youíre fortunate sufficient to search out one, nevertheless, thatís when the actual problem begins. Mouthbrooding males are extraordinarily cautious of predators (and by extension, underwater photographers) and make use of a type of ìwhack-a-moleî protection, retreating shortly into their burrow in the event that they sense incoming hazard. Getting the shot requires hovering immobile as near the substrate as doable till the fish ultimately decides that you're not, actually, there to eat his youngsters. Mouthbrooding male fish are actually the last word stay-at-home dads. ìPaternal buccal incubationî could also be a mouthful, however so is carrying each single one among your infants inside your mouth. Relying on the species, paternity go away lasts wherever from every week (jawfish) to a month (cardinalfish), whereas dad goes on an involuntary starvation strike. Because the eggsí guardian, he should aerate them and take away waste and fouled eggs to maintain them wholesome. To perform this, he periodically spits all of the eggs out after which shortly sucks them again in. Think about throwing your child within the air and catching them on the best way down, besides that youíre throwing 400 of them without delay. For some dads, the ìhoney-doî record doesnít cease after incubation. When the eggs hatch (which additionally happens inside their mouth, thus defending the eggs from predators), these dads proceed to deal with the newly-hatched fry inside their mouths for an additional a number of weeks. All new dad and mom would in all probability agree that moments of peace and quiet assist preserve sanity with a new child, however on this case, the dad actually can not escape the children, even to go to the toilet. Moreover, if the fry are unruly, he couldnít yell at them even when he had a voice as a result of, wellóhis mouth is full. Yellowhead jawfish will be the final piscine actual property tycoons. They've his-and-hers burrows, with the femaleís not more than a pair ft away in order that she will be able to control him. In addition they excavate a 3rd burrow, which acts as a type of honeymoon suite. The couple turn out to be fairly aggressive if one other fish tries to construct too near their property line. Getting a photograph of the eggs is a fragile steadiness; slowly shifting your digicam shut sufficient whereas concurrently making certain the male doesnít assume your digicam is planning to interrupt floor subsequent door. Earlier than mouthbrooding males are chosen as appropriate day care facilities, there needs to be an open home. To showcase their would-be nursery, male jawfish courtroom females by swimming in a collection of swoops, arching their backs and flaring their fins. For the finale, they get very near her and easily open their mouth as vast as they'll. If the feminine deems the mouth suitably sizable, they turn out to be mates. Mick Jagger, for instance, would haven't any bother courting a feminine, have been he a yellowhead jawfish. To not be outdone, Banggai cardinalfish have a flowery dance of their very own. On this case the feminine makes the strikes, isolating the male of her alternative. Her choice relies on physique dimension: the larger the male, the larger the mouth; the larger the mouth, the higher the mate. As soon as she will get him alone, she does some vigorous trembling, then breaks out her dance strikes: the ìrushî and the ìtwitch.î She retains dancing till the male indicators his receptiveness, which as you will have guessed, is finished by opening his mouth. Nature clearly has confidence within the would possibly of Mr. Mother, as male mouthbrooding has advanced independently in a number of households of fish. Of the eight such households, three consist solely of paternal mouthbrooders: jawfish, cardinalfish, and sea catfish. Snakeheads, arowanas and gouramis embrace a mix of female and male mouthbrooders. Cichlids are sometimes maternal mouthbrooders, with a couple of paternal mouthbrooders, and a few biparental mouthbrooding (which additionally happens in some Bagrid catfish). Mouthbrooding in cichlids has taken an interesting evolutionary flip. If you happen to assume itís dangerous elevating your personal children inside your mouth, think about elevating the neighborís children, too. The subject of my impromptu substitute convention presentation, this happens when feminine cichlids are parasitized by feminine cuckoo catfish. The catfish lays her personal eggs alongside the cichlidís, and never realizing the distinction between the 2, the cichlid mouthbroods each units of eggs. The worst half about elevating this neighborís eggs is that when her children hatch first, they eat your whole children. Parental care in cichlids is complicated; all species present parental take care of each eggs and larvaeósome till the fry are months previous. Some exhibit communal parental care, the place a number of monogamous pairs take care of combined teams of fry. Even the youngsters from earlier spawns often assist shield the newborns. For cichlids, it actually does take a village (or relatively, a faculty).† I lately returned from a dive journey to Cozumel, the place my Easter egg hunt for mouthbrooding males got here up empty. I did discover the endemic ìsplendid toadfish,î a blue-striped bottom-dweller with a really fancy hipster beard and yellow-tipped fins; it was one among many reminders that there are numerous weirdly great creatures to jot down about within the sea. On daily basis on the boat, with a view to determine which internet sites to go to, the divemasters would ask us a query: ìDo you wish to see marine life, or do you wish to see wholesome coral?îóas if the 2 at the moment are mutually unique. A number of guides famous how drastically issues have modified prior to now three years, with sponges, delicate corals and excessive numbers of animals disappearing from the reefs, together with the overgrowth of algae. Like all marine life, local weather change and ocean acidification threaten the well being of mouthbrooding fish. Just like turtles, many fish exhibit temperature-dependent intercourse dedication. Larger temperatures lead to skewed intercourse ratios, which places stress on the inhabitants. Ocean acidification is very detrimental to larvae, as research present survival charges of eggs underneath heightened CO2 ranges (1,000 ppm) lower by a mean of 70 p.c. Mouthbrooding fish take extraordinary measures to guard their eggs from pure threats. We as people ought to take extraordinary measures to minimize their want for defense towards man-made ones. The creator want to acknowledge Julie Byle of the College of Colorado for her suggestions on this piece. Read the full article

Beyond Franklin: Fraser Avenue
How the family of a piper populated the Prairies
Located in the heart of Fort McMurray’s downtown core, Fraser Avenue recognizes some of Alberta’s earliest settlers who populated the Edmonton area in the 1800s. Today, the Avenue is home to landmarks and facilities like the Rotary House Seniors Lodge, Chez Dube Country Inn and the city’s first high-end apartment condominium – the II Villagio.
According to the Fort McMurray Historical Society, Fraser Avenue's name comes from Colin Fraser and his son Junior (Colin). Colin Fraser Sr. was a piper from Scotland, and his son built a post in the Lesser Slave Lake region in 1885. Based in Fort Chipewyan, Junior was a fur trader of precious furs including fox, beaver and mink in Alberta’s oldest community.
Building the Fraser Name in Alberta
Fraser is a nostalgic family name to the Province of Alberta. It first gained recognition by Colin Fraser in the early 1800s. He was a personal piper for Hudson Bay Company (HBC) Governor George Simpson, and he followed Simpson around on legendary canoe trips to the HBC forts across Canada.
According to Carol Snyder’s novel, After the Fur Trade, Fraser was a servant for Simpson. He dressed in full Highland regalia as worn in Scotland and would play bagpipes when Simpson would “sneak up on the forts, surprising staff with his sudden appearance. This would provide him with a true picture of conditions at the fort.”
The Frasers were one of the first families to claim River Lots in the area that is known today as the City of Edmonton. In December 1872, Fraser purchased land and built his family home the following summer. The Glen Bow Art Museum in Calgary has records of information on the Fraser family from the 1930s. A letter written by Colin Jr. on February 15, 1933, indicates his father was born in Scotland in 1807 and he died in the 1860s in Lake St. Ann., while he was with the HBC.
He married Nancy Beaudry at Fort Carlton, an HBC hub in Saskatchewan, and was transferred to alternate HBC post known as the Jasper House, where most of his 12 children were born before making their way to Edmonton.
Located on the Yellowhead Highway in Jasper National Park, the Jasper House viewpoint remains as a national historic site today. From 1813 to 1884, it functioned in two different locations and was a staging and supply post for travels through the Canadian Rockies.
As preserved in the Provincial Archives of Alberta, his wife Nancy’s obituary notice in the Edmonton Bulletin from August 31, 1900, stated she was 92 years old when she passed. Nancy was the oldest resident in Edmonton at the time of her death.
The notice further mentioned that Nancy had fifty grandchildren alive and 27 dead. She also had thirty-nine great-grandchildren living and ten who had passed. They were some of the earliest settlers to “1885 Street” at Fort Edmonton Park.
As for Fraser’s son, Colin, he became well-known for his independent fur trading post in Fort Chipewyan and took his scow up the Athabasca River to sell furs and supplies in Edmonton each year. He had four sons and six daughters with his wife.
On March 6, 1944, a notice was posted in a newspaper’s classifieds section that Colin Jr. left behind an estate valued at $75,000. He passed away on February 3, 1942, at the age of 91. The beneficiaries included his daughter and Victoria-resident Mary Mellow, and his grandson Horace Mellor.

US president says war would be ‘end’ of Iran as tensions rise – BBC News
US president says war would be ‘end’ of Iran as tensions rise 20 May 2019 These are external links and will open in a new window Close share panel Image copyright Reuters Image caption Tensions have risen between Iran under President Hassan Rouhani and the US under President Donald Trump US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to Iran, suggesting it will be destroyed if a conflict breaks out between the two countries. “If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran,” he said in a tweet on Sunday. “Never threaten the United States again!” Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted in response that such “genocidal taunts won’t ‘end Iran'”. The US has deployed additional warships and planes to the Gulf in recent days. But Mr Trump’s tweet marks a shift in tone after recent attempts to downplay the possibility of military conflict. In an interview with Fox News broadcast on Sunday, the president vowed that he would not let Iran develop nuclear weapons but said he did not want a conflict. “I’m not somebody that wants to go into war, because war hurts economies, war kills people most importantly – by far most importantly,” he said. Iran travel warning for dual nationals Iran has also moved to talk down concerns over the escalating tensions. On Saturday, its foreign minister insisted there was no appetite for war. “There will not be a war since neither we want a war nor does anyone have the illusion they can confront Iran in the region,” Mr Zarif told state news agency Irna. On Monday he dismissed Mr Trump’s tweet, saying the president “hopes to achieve what Alexander [the Great], Genghis [Khan] & other aggressors failed to do.” “Iranians have stood tall for millennia while aggressors all gone. #EconomicTerrorism & genocidal taunts won’t ‘end Iran’,” he added. “#NeverThreatenAnIranian. Try respect—it works!” President Trump, after appearing to dial down the tensions with Iran, has now seemingly threatened catastrophic consequences if there is any attack against US interests or facilities. It underscores the mercurial approach of the US president to world affairs – restraint one moment and bluster the next. Such an approach is hugely destabilising and could contribute to Tehran misjudging US intentions. All of the ingredients for a confrontation are there: a lack of clarity in the US approach; the potential desire by Iran to push matters to the brink; and a series of incidents in the region itself (the recent sabotage against a small number of oil tankers and the rocket attack near the US compound in Baghdad) which demonstrate that there are elements on the ground eager to inflame tensions and test the US administration’s resolve. Why are there tensions? The latest frictions come after Iran suspended its commitments under the 2015 international nuclear deal , and threatened to resume production of enriched uranium which is used to make reactor fuel and nuclear weapons. The deal aimed to cut sanctions on Iran in exchange for an end to its nuclear programme, but the US unilaterally withdrew from the agreement last year. Calling the deal “defective”, Mr Trump then re-imposed sanctions. Media playback is unsupported on your device Media caption The BBC’s Paul Adams looks at the recent developments behind the US-Iran tensions Tehran has allegedly placed missiles on boats in the Gulf, and US investigators reportedly believe the country damaged four tankers off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, claims Iran has denied. What’s the latest in the Gulf? On Sunday, the Iraqi military said a rocket had been fired into Baghdad’s heavily-fortified Green Zone, which houses government buildings and foreign embassies. It reportedly hit an abandoned building near to the US embassy. There were no casualties and it is not yet clear who was behind the attack. A State Department spokesman however said the US will hold Iran responsible “if any such attacks are conducted by its proxy militia forces”. Mr Trump’s threats on Twitter came hours after the first reports of the rocket attack. President Trump ‘behaving like a mafia boss’ In recent days, the US has deployed the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier to the region and reportedly drawn up plans to send 120,000 troops to the Middle East . Diplomatic staff have been ordered to leave Iraq , and the US military have raised the threat level in the region because of alleged intelligence about Iran-backed forces – contradicting a British general who had said there was “no increased threat” . Dutch and German soldiers said they had suspended their military training programmes in the country. Separately, Saudi Arabia accused Tehran of a drone attack on a pipeline on Friday. It alleged that Houthi rebels in Yemen conducted the strike on Iran’s orders. A state-aligned Saudi newspaper called for the US to launch attacks on the country. Iran denies the allegations.

Billionaire Robert F Smith to pay entire US class’s student debt

Robert F Smith, one of America’s most prominent black philanthropists, was giving an address at Morehouse College, a historically all-male black college. Nearly 400 students will benefit at a cost of tens of millions of dollars. The class of 2019 and their teachers were stunned at the news before breaking into applause. Free tuition for all NYU medical students ‘I feared not living to pay off my debt’ “This is my class, 2019. And my family is making a grant to eliminate their student loans.” The billionaire was at the college to receive an honorary doctorate and had already announced a donation of $1.5m to Morehouse. The exact cost of Mr Smith’s latest act of generosity is unclear, as the college has yet to calculate the total debt of the students who will benefit, but it is estimated to be at least $10m (£7.7m) and could be significantly higher. How did they react? Aaron Mitchom, 22, wept at the news that he would not have to pay back $200,000 in loans he had taken out to fund his finance studies, AP news agency reports. “I was shocked,” he said. “My heart dropped. We all cried. In the moment it was like a burden had been taken off.” Morehouse College president David A Thomas was quoted by CNN as saying: ” When you have to service debt, the choices about what you can go do in the world are constrained . “[The grant] gives them the liberty to follow their dreams, their passions.”

Mr. Long: Martin Long, the MLA for West Yellowhead.
Mr. Shepherd: David Shepherd, Edmonton-City Centre. I’ll just note that however much other members praise their constituencies, they all come to visit mine.

Mr. Getson: When you look at these harm-reduction units and these failed policies, why is it that the cowboy from West Henday – that would be me. As soon as you step over the Member for Edmonton-West Henday and you go over that little line, as soon as you get onto the Yellowhead – why is the Chinese community calling me? Why are they calling the cowboy kid, apparently, to come down to Chinatown and talk about all these issues?

“Labor Now Plentiful,” Toronto Globe. November 21, 1911. Page 9. ---- Contractors No Longer Handicapped, Says Mr. Foley --- The scarcity of labor which has handicapped railroad construction in this country for some time has now disappeared, according to Mr. Timothy Foley of Foley, Welch & Stewart, railway contractors. Mr. Foley arrived in the city yesterday from Duluth and says that work on the Canadian Northern between Sudbury and Port Arthur and on the Grand Trunk Pacific from Yellowhead Pass to Prince Rupert is progressing satisfactorily.
He said his company had 4,500 men at week on the C.N.R. contract, and in a short time he said they would have 400 teams at work. Operations will continue through the winter.

Mr. Dach: I’ll just briefly add a small comment. This very reasonable amendment reminds me of a former member of this Legislature who would get up to speak in the long hours of the night and be a real good soldier on many, many amendments. That was the former Member for West Yellowhead. His comment quite often, after reading an amendment such as this, knowing how reasonable and good it was, was to say quite loudly in the House: well, what’s wrong with that? That’s what I’m reminded of tonight, and I ask the same question. What’s wrong with that? Hail, West Yellowhead and Mr. Rosendahl.
The Chair: Oh, this hour of the night.
