Woo, first part of the Volorei PMD AU is done! This comic is a blend of original art and official PMD explorers of sky art. (Background of first panel and all of second panel is edited official, the rest is mine)
More info below the cut here!
This is a PMD explorer of sky AU where my specific version of Legend of Arceus's Rei from my fanfic ACD was taken at 18 years old to the PMD explorer of world in typical protag fashion. (He never went to Hisui in this AU and would have been living in Jubilife Town in Sinnoh before this)
He still has all his human memories and is doing his best to adjust to the fact he had to live the rest of his life as a Pokemon when up until recently he has only ever been a human. New instincts and a new brain aren't easy to adjust to even if it is your consciousness using them!
(I personally feel like this is the best way to translate over Rei's struggles with learning to cope with adjusting to the past over into the PMD universe.)
Rei had already finished the main plot of PMD:EOS and is just living his life doing missions when a local Absol named Volo requests help hatching a Togepi egg he found in a dungeon due to Chansey's daycare being full. Rei, being a fire type, sees this as easy money and accepts the job.
What he didn't expect was that Volo would immediately develop a huge crush on him. Now he has to work with a lovestruck Absol to raise a little Togepi egg and while the guy is incredibly cute he's also a little weird. Like he wants to fight god and keeps making plans. Will he let this obsession consume him or will he give it up for the sake of raising Togepi? Will Rei return Volo's feelings or leave when the job is over?
Volo himself is the local merchant who sets up shop in dungeons in place of the Kecleon brothers. He's pretty flighty so he doesn't set up shop too often because he's always getting distracted by the dungeons he's in. He just wants to explore them! And maybe one of them will eventually lead him to God so he can fight him. He's a Pokemon of simple goals!
His most recent escapade was pushing through all 99 floors of Destiny Tower only to find out that Arceus wasn't even there. It was just a statue that looked like him.
Volo was understandably not thrilled with this but he did find something completely unexpected at the statue's feet- an abandoned Togepi egg. Volo thinks it may have been placed at the foot of the statue as a plee to Arceus to have it protected. He decides to take it upon himself to raise the egg to spite Arceus for not having the nerve to show up and take it himself. (I'm sure Arceus is very hurt by this Volo. He's crying right now, trust me.)
I have a few more comics planned for this since it's a nice sort of break from writing ACD to draw cute stuff with Volo and Rei when I feel burnt out from the angst of the fanfiction. Exactly how much will probably depend on how much interest this gets but I'm still going to be working on ACD first and foremost. Hope you guys like it!

me, deranged: what if arceus actually copied volo instead of the other way around
there are probably really intricate ancient paintings of arceus done by the celestica people but the idea that volo knows of arceus as the almighty omniscient entity through the myths and legends he learns and only has vague descriptions or old worn carvings to go off of when he makes his outfit scratches my brain.
that plus the gay little pose that everyone laughs at him for when he throws his pokeball... when i first saw it i literally gasped bc i instantly recognized it as a parallel to the way arceus rears up before initiating battle.
and so:
you worship and you worship and you worship until your obsession implodes. until you believe yourself a god and you carry yourself as one. until you have recreated yourself in the image of the deity you sought in your attempt to replace it, unaware that such mimicry has extended much further and dug much deeper than mere appearances. that you are becoming the very thing you now seek to destroy.
or so that's how i originally read it. that volo, in his obsession with arceus, subconsciously started copying it in mannerism as well without even knowing what it looked like for sure.
arceus had no need for a concrete form, nor did it see any reason to create one beyond a cursory hazy image for the few times it needed to directly intervene - such as when the hero is pulled through time and space and reality. but it knows that it must meet with its chosen soon and that there will be confrontation. but as its chosen approaches its realm, it sees another. one that has been vying for its attention until that plea for acknowledgement became a demand for an answer, until that wish became a will. so it waits and observes and when all is done, it casts its judgement. its initial verdict holds true. the chosen remains the chosen and the other remains just that: the other. its attention returns to its champion and considers the form it will take when it itself stands as the chosen's opponent.
but now i wonder if it may be the other way around?
as in:
and so it takes on the image of the other that has gained its watchful eye as the one that could possibly have challenged its chosen's role. a worthy opponent, surely.
but arceus exists beyond time and space and in all other whens and wheres, it now and then appears as such.
(since arceus doesn't play by the linear rules of time that humans understand, when it chooses its form, then that is how it looks now and that was how it looked before and it has always been that way since the start of creation.)
subsequently, all depictions of it reflect this form. so when volo makes his cosplay based on the old paintings he sees of arceus, he's actually cosplaying arceus's cosplay of his cosplay of its cosplay of his cosplay of–

“This place seems familiar, even though I’ve never been here before... it’s like Mistress Cogita’s place... it even smells like her retreat somehow...” Volo sighed, thinking for a moment.
“We found this boy out by our landing in the Coastlands, he didn’t have anyone with him or anything on him...” Ginther sighed, rubbing his chin.
“And the Celestica Tribe from that region?” Cogita asked with a somber look.
“All gone, seems to be a pokemon attack...” The Ginkgo leader gave a look downwards. “We think you may be the only relation he has left.”
“I’m not one for the raising of children, isn’t there a spot for him in the Guild?”
“We can train him as a merchant, but... ma’am, this boy has likely just seen everything he’s known been torn apart. I think he needs something more than a band of nomad merchants can give him... he needs a home.”
“That’s not exactly something I’m equipped for either, but I’ll see what I can do...”
--------------------------------
“Hey, Granny Cogita!”
“OW!” Volo rubbed his head as he was bonked by the older lady.
“You will call me Mistress Cogita! I’ll knock some manners into you sooner or later, especially if you’re going off with the Ginkgo Guild...”
“Why’d you hit me with your weird pink cutting board!? Everything you make with that tastes funny anyway!” He winced as he poked the growing bump.
“You’re lucky to HAVE food, you little welp. There are many in Hisui that don’t get that much.” Cogita huffed with another, lighter bonk.
Once Volo’s head stopped spinning he returned to the topic at hand. “What’s with these weird drawings anyway?” He held up an old piece of parchment from Cogita’s study.
“Oh, I didn’t think incorrigible children like you would find that sort of thing interesting...” She gave a light smirk. “That’s a very old piece of text from the Celestica People about the creator of the whole Hisui region. I don’t have complete notes on it but it’s still information few around these parts are privy to.”
“Will you teach me to read it?!” The young boy looked up excitedly.
“I suppose it would help your work as a merchant if you learned to read, and sating your curiosity is the responsible thing to do... This is but a piece of the Creation Myth though, if you go out with the Guild you’ll see all kinds of places and learn all kinds of things most people don’t know about...”
“Hey Gr-Mistress Cogita, do you think if I learned everything I could about the Creator, they’d tell me why life is this way? Why people and pokemon hate and fear each other, why good people suffer toil and starvation? Why my whole village had to die? If I learn everything I can, will I earn some answers?”
“...”
Tumblr media
“Heh, what a failure I must look to be to her now... I wonder what she said once that Trainer told her about what happened at the Spear Pillar...”
Tumblr media
“That fool’s obsession finally got the better of him huh? That’s what happens when passion burns too brightly I suppose.”
Tumblr media
“Something like that, right?” He gave a half-hearted chuckle.
Tumblr media
“I really did devote myself to Arceus as much as I could, with wonder and curiosity about the great creator of our land... but the more I learned about the world and how unfair it is, the more that curiosity turned into resentment... I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be recognized by Arceus, or to make it answer for making our world this way... why this way, of all ways, must the world operate? Surely there’s a world without all this strife and misery, and if there isn’t, what’s the point?”
Tumblr media
“So you’re what was sent here after the rest of us were sent to the other side...”
Tumblr media
“...!”
