Universal Pictures” “Candyman” Official Trailer 2
When we last discussed the upcoming “Candyman” film here on the website, the world was a very different place since that was in the ending days of February 2020. That post can be found HERE if you’d like to be thorough and now as the world slowly tries to be normal again after so much chaos, a new trailer has arrived. I’ve secured that along with a better premise and casting and art. Enjoy and I…

Top Singles/EPs of 2017
To keep the pool of candidates manageable, I made the arbitrary choice to restrict my lists to what I purchased on vinyl. As well, these are presented in alphabetical order, because ranking them seems so painful (choosing just ten was hard enough). Each title is a link to some sort of audio sample.
18 Rays - 18 Rays (Antinote) Sleeper hit for me, and “I Feel Rain” is super stoned, sleepy eyed pop brilliance and an absolute ear worm. The rest of the EP is top shelf downtempo, with a melancholic pop edge. Shout out to the bassline in “These Empty Stairs”, huge guitars in “Long Time Ago”, and the (mellotron?) flutes of “North West Plaza”.
Tumblr media
Bendith - Bendith EP (Aficionado) Maybe the best release all year. Like a Welsh, mostly acoustic Espers…but better? Baroque, medieval, psychedelic, sad, beautiful. Every track is a standout, including an excellent rendition of the traditional Japanese Takeda lullaby. But it is “Cân Am Gariad”, a cover of Lesley Duncan’s “Love Song”, that brings me to tears.
Tumblr media
Earth Trax x Newborn Jr. - Mirage (Les Yeux Orange) The B-side is really fun, getting to hear Newborn Jr strike out alone on a looped country fried jammer bringing to mind Todd Edwards, and Earth Trax laying down a burner. But the A-side is just monstrous, especially the title track. When those absolutely huge ravey chords come in and subtle acidic trails start firing…hands in the air.
Tumblr media
Max Manetti - Max Manetti EP (Über) Some awesome combo of Coyote and Mushrooms Project at their most horizontal, but also its own thing. Stoned out tempos, dubby basslines, tons of hand percussion, sun-baked guitar, and lysergic synths and vocal samples all over the place. Its all amazing, toes-in-the-sand beachy brilliance, but the b-side in particular kills.
Tumblr media
Modern Manners - Modern Manners 001 (Modern Manners) “Amor y Odio” is just so classic: sparse breakbeat and bassline, trippy synths, and mournful Spanish guitar (shades of Coyote’s “Eve”!!). “Running With Me” has a nice loungey almost bossa nova rhythm with tasteful organ, jazzy laid back guitar, and soulful vocals. “Instant Illusion” finishes with a playful bassline anchoring a relaxed downtempo drift. (MM 002 is also most excellent...bring on 003!).
Tumblr media
Mori Ra - Akebono / Tasogare (Balearic Social) Ive played these records ALOT. The most balearic of Mori Ra’s many great edits/reworks. A lot of it sounds like it could come from the early Cafe del Mar volumes. The AA side of Akebono, “Exodus” is a real stand out…hypnotic, floaty, and uplifting. As well as the A side of Tasogare, which is a jammed out jazzy banger.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nancy Noise - Kaia (Beyond Paradise) “Kaia” should go down as an all timer, all desert swept acoustic, twinkly keys, and muted spaghetti western trumpets. Completely epic. “Azizi’s Dance” also kills it, with perhaps my favorite bassline of the year and those totally classic housey pianos. The remixes of “Kaia” are also on point, with Leo Mas & Fabrice grooving it out and Man Power throwing it all over a breakbeat and upping the cosmic factor. Also a lot of love for Leo Mas & Fabrice’s “Balearic Lovers” mix on the remix EP.
Tumblr media
Pender Street Steppers - Pender Street Steppers (Mood Hut) The A-side is jaw dropping and the standout is the synth-saxy house shuffle, spy movie guitar, and hazy vox of “Raining Again”. “Mirror (Dub)” is light-as-air dub that is really compelling, spacey, and easy to fall into. And just try not to tap your toes when the groove kicks in and that whistle melody starts in “Molto Bene”. The B-side has some excellent Hut-style house, but doesn’t quite reach the ridiculous heights of the A-side.
Tumblr media
Private Agenda - Dusk/Dawn (NuNorthern Soul) Both “Dusk” and “Dawn” are gorgeous, subdued, catchy, and immaculately crafted. The remixes are the real story however, especially Faze Action’s and Ron Basejam’s takes on “Dawn”. The former has the feel of a White Isle classic, with tropical and percussive synths, a bouncy beat, and Cantoma guitars. The latter gets so much glorious mileage out of a disco leaning break and a delicious sax line.
Tumblr media
Various - We’ll Sea Pts. 1 & 2 (Mireia Records) RSS Disco’s “We’ll Sea” lays a catchy vocal hook over an absolutely classic organ-led downtempo groove, and the sum of these simple parts wrenches my heart. Just timeless. “Porto” is more uptempo, with an awesome filtered bassline and mystical and soaring vocals. Conga Fever finishes part 1 with a loungey, noir-esque guitar/organ groover. On the A-side of part 2, the Marcus Worgull edit of Gil Scott Heron’s “I’m New Here” is sublime, layering his dusty acoustic and croon over a subtle and hypnotic shaker-led beat.

Image Is Everything: How Cary Grant Took Control by Jill Blake
Tumblr media
During studio-era classic Hollywood, the lives of stars, both in private and public, were almost always on display for peering eyes. Studios controlled nearly every aspect of their contract stars’ lives, closely guarding their public images and fabricating intriguing backstories filled with fictional details worthy of their own movie. Contract stars were a valuable commodity for a studio, and the more of them you had at your disposal meant more chances at successful movies, which then meant more recognition and most importantly, higher profits. Bringing a star under contract was a huge financial cost for a studio, but like any property (and that’s exactly what these actors and actresses were), the only way to make money is to invest it. While countless stars found themselves locked in unforgiving multi-year studio contracts that stifled their creativity and presented lackluster projects, a small handful, through smart business decisions and careful strategy, were able to break free of the traditional studio contract (well, as much as they could at that time) and carve out a more varied and creatively satisfying career. One of the actors who successfully broke out was the legendary Cary Grant.
But how did he do it? How did he break free of the system that made him, while also using it to his benefit? Throughout his life, including long before he ever stepped foot on a Hollywood sound stage and even after his retirement in 1966, Grant maintained tight control on his carefully crafted public persona and image, in the same way a Hollywood star today guards the details of their private life. And while Grant guarded his private life, too, he knew that his most valuable asset was being Cary Grant. At times, the public and private Cary Grant were one in the same; his name, his look and his voice were not only his livelihood, but his reputation, his legacy.
Tumblr media
So many other things were out of his control: abandonment by his mother at the age of nine when she was institutionalized for mental illness (at the time he had been told that she left on holiday and eventually died; he didn’t discover the truth of her disappearance until he was in his early 30s, when he reunited with her); his father’s philandering; his difficulties in his personal and romantic relationships, including marriages to five women with all but one ending in divorce; and his desperate need to be liked by the general public. With all of those things bearing down on him, Grant made sure he had complete control of everything he possibly could. While his tenacious drive and dedication to create and maintain control of his image, regardless of the insecurities prompting it, proved to be worthwhile for Grant both personally and professionally, it was also groundbreaking for those in Hollywood who would follow him and his example, as he unintentionally set the template for career independence.
At a young age, Cary Grant (born Archibald Alexander Leach) was already showing the early signs of the great actor and performer he would later become. He naturally took to dance and the piano and was absolutely transfixed by live vaudeville shows and the one-reel comedies he saw in the movie theater. Grant wasn’t a great student in school, preferring to flaunt his acrobatic skills around his classmates and spend his free time hanging around backstage at the vaudeville theaters in his hometown of Bristol, England. After being expelled from school, Grant joined the famous Pender Troupe where he honed his acrobatic skills and learned about the importance of timing, particularly when working within an ensemble. Later, Grant’s ability to gauge how to use timing in his screwball comedies would prove to be an invaluable and unique skill, setting him apart from his fellow comedic actors. In 1920, when Grant was only 16, he left England to tour with the Pender Troupe in America. He soon realized that he longed for much more than a traveling acrobatic troupe could offer him, so he made the first of many shrewd career decisions that would pay off many times over.
When the Pender Troupe’s engagement at the New York Hippodrome came to an end, prompting their return to England, Grant elected to leave the troupe and remain in New York. For the next several years, he worked in vaudeville, touring all over the country and doing everything from singing and dancing to stand-up comedy. When he wasn’t on the stage, Grant was a street performer, including stilt-walking and juggling. And when he found himself short on work, he and friend Orry George Kelly (who would later become known as Orry-Kelly, famous in his own right for being one of Hollywood’s greatest costume designers) would set up on the sidewalks of New York City to sell neckties that Kelly had hand painted.
Tumblr media
After a relatively successful and critically-praised performance in the Broadway play Nikki, Grant was invited to give a screen test with Paramount Studios. In his first on-screen appearance in the short film Singapore Sue (‘32), Grant was unremarkable. Sure, he was handsome, but he didn’t have that effortless style and ease that would later become synonymous with his name. Despite a rather lackluster start, Paramount signed him to a five-year contract, groomed and renamed him and cast him as tuxedo-clad arm candy for their top leading ladies, including Sylvia Sidney, Marlene Dietrich, Nancy Carroll and Mae West. However, Grant was deeply unsatisfied with the roles offered to him, most of them being the cast-offs of the studio’s more popular stars, like Gary Cooper and Fredric March.
Things changed for Grant when he was loaned out to the much smaller RKO Pictures for a chance to work with director George Cukor and star alongside Katharine Hepburn. The film was SYLVIA SCARLETT (‘35) and it finally gave Grant the opportunity to demonstrate his depth as a performer and his impeccable timing. At the end of his Paramount contract in 1936, Grant refused to sign another long-term studio contract, going freelance and opting for limited picture deals that would give him choice in his projects and the flexibility to work for several different studios. At the time, going freelance was practically unheard of and was considered career suicide. For many stars, not being tethered to a major studio contract would have certainly been the end of their careers. But Grant’s need to perform and share his unique talents would never be adequately fulfilled by a sweeping multi-year studio contract. Acting wasn’t just a job for Grant—his very life depended on it. So, in reality, this kind of risky move was really Grant’s only choice.
Tumblr media
Grant’s instincts proved to be right, carrying him through an on-screen career that lasted over 34 years, with an image and legacy that has only endured and grown since his death in 1986. During his three decades in Hollywood, Grant worked with some of Hollywood’s best filmmakers, including multiple collaborations with key directors who would help shape the “Cary Grant persona”: Alfred Hitchcock, George Stevens, George Cukor, Howard Hawks, Leo McCarey and Stanley Donen. Grant, who was both a successful comedic and romantic leading man (as well as a fine dramatic actor, when given the chance), worked alongside incredible leading ladies, including Irene Dunne, Myrna Loy, Deborah Kerr, Grace Kelly and Ingrid Bergman. Unlike other popular romantic leading couples—such as Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, Myrna Loy and William Powell, and Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy—Grant was never attached to one specific actress. While he made multiple films with some, he was never typecast as the “other half” in an on-screen partnership. Those decisions, coupled with his move to retire in 1966, while he was still in demand and before he lost his romantic leading man status by growing old on screen, undoubtedly contributed to his broad appeal with audiences and his enduring legacy.
The persona of Cary Grant was most certainly a product of the Hollywood star machine. But thankfully, Grant figured out early on how to make the machine work to his advantage, allowing all of us to bask in his beautiful masculinity, his charm and charisma, his hilarious comedic timing and even his caddish, dark side. In all of his years cultivating and safeguarding his image, to the extent that some even criticized his methods, Grant ensured that he would be forever remembered, perfectly preserved in celluloid. And for that, we should all be eternally grateful.

Illithid: What does your character like to eat? Dragon: Tell a story of something cool that your character did in play. Ettercap: Who drives your character up the wall?
I’m going to answer for Fatima and Torvald! Thanks for sending in @sloth-race!
Illithid: What does your character like to eat?
Fatima has a taste for the gamier meats. She has spent so much time roaming the hills that wild animals are her thing. It is especially conforting now that she is stuck in a city all the time...hence her beat jerky that she bought that day in the market. However, she really enjoyed that fancy meal in the fancy brothel we went to. That cake was the bomb.
Torvald is a meat and potatoes kind of guy. He like hearty stews and startches. He also has yelled out something about lutefisk once. (yuck) It all stems from his early life living far in the north without much civilization around.
Dragon: Tell a story of something cool that your character did in play.
Fatima’s mostly done things I’m a bit embarrassed about. Lots of staying quiet and just waiting the hit things, and lots of lying. There has been so much lying. I’m not a liar. It’s very difficult for me.
Hoover, I’m really excited about the fact that Fatima adopted her hawk, Nancy. It was totally a spur of the moment, impulse idea, but she ran with it. I think the possibilities with Nancy are endless and I am excited to see how she ends up retaliating against the racist pet store shopkeeper.
Torvald hasn’t had a lot of play time, but he did die within his first 4 hours! Some gross brain with legs took over his body while he was stunned. It sent his consciousness from his body and he basically died. He ended up in Warrior’s Rest (kind of like Valhalla) where he saw a large god who looked remarkably like him. He didn’t introduce himself, but Torvald is convinced it was Tempus. Tempus saw him enter the hall and told him, “It is not time yet.” and he smacked Torvald’s happy ass back into his body. He opened his eyes to find @ma-sulevin‘s Dot standing over him with her magical apple in his mouth.
Torvald has always believed he was the son of Tempus. This was basically conformation for him. It isn’t a story of something he did, but rather something that happened to him, but I think it’s pretty awesome.
Ettercap: Who drives your character up the wall?
Fatima did not get along with @roguelioness‘s Jinzael. At all. She didn’t trust her for one second. It’s the reason that when the group split up, Fatima didn’t stay with her friend Dot and instead went with your group. I’m glad she did though, because I am loving the relationship she is developing with your Pender. However, the “goodness” of Pender and @kaoruyogi‘s Felix can really drive her crazy sometimes. She’s more about doing what her impulses tell her to do.
Torvald is so damn happy. So far he hasn’t become annoyed by anyone.

Small town Boy by Bronski beat. 80s music always reminds me of my sister, so whenever I discover a new song I think she’ll like.
Dancing on my Own, by Robyn. In some ways I prefer some of the covers of this song for melancholy, however Robyn delivers a lot of energy with her tracks.  Sometimes you need music that gives you the energy to sort out your flat after a bunch of on-calls. The cover by Hope is also pretty good.
Shape of You by Ed Sheeran. I live in hospital. I usually don’t even know what’s in the charts. I usually stumble over songs I like on youtube. Anyhow, I know everyone and their uncle was listening to this this summer, but, like Robyn’s music it motivates me to clean, so I guess its a worthy if unexciting inclusion on the list. I also like Nancy Mulligan, another song from his recent album, which is about his grandparents’ romance back in Ireland. That one just reminds me of European folk music and good times.
Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac. I know everyone and eveyone’s uncle loves Rumors so this is not a radical choice, but this remains a perfect song.
Hurts like Hell, by Fleurie. One of my best friends introduced me to this when we were comparing soundtracks for our D&D characters, and I’m glad she did! It evokes love and loss in a gentle yet heartbreaking way.
Shadow of the Day by Linkin Park. What can I say? Many of us grew up with their music, and their talent for expressing frustration. Sometimes   with the recent news of Chester’s passing, this song and many of their others gained new significance.
Sora Ni Utaeba by Amazerashi, third opening from the My Hero Academia anime. So, I actually have a secret. Every time I start a new job, I end up watching something superhero related. Previously it was One Punch Man and Miraculous Ladybug, now it’s BNHA. Maybe it’s the hopeful theme of doing your best to help others, and working to be the best you can be. Ay any rate, this one is catchy and sums up exactly that kind of theme.
Heartlines by Florence + the Machine. I love most of her music, but this is a personal one for me. It’s the song that reminds me to keep going when it feels like I’ve been on call forever.
Home by Ellie Goulding feels a bit like coming home from yet another on-call. It’s got a tired, reflective feeling. I seem to have filled this list with reflective, quiet music, though that’s not all I listen to!
Life, by I vurtiosi Italiani. I love using non-verbal music as background music when I study, and this is one of my current favourites. Frankly, amlost anything that Ludovico Einaudi composes could be.
I’m always up for discovering what other people live to listen to, so consider yourself tagged if you read this. But just in the spirit of things, I’m tagging 10 people that show up in my notes recently: @damnedifyoudeeohh, @charakacomplex, @dogemd, @kyidyl @mistressofsurgery @mudphudkangaroo @rabid-dragoness @pendere @dr-a-level @trenchcoatsandstethoscopes @girlwithastethoscope

The Applecross Saga
by Amanda Giorgis
Genre: Historical New Zealand Fiction
The Wideawake Hat **Get it FREE!!**
From the Scottish Highlands to the South Island of New Zealand, life was harsh for the early pioneers who ventured into a new land far across the seas where opportunity beckoned for those who could endure the hardships.
Shepherd's Delight
A fictional tale, set against the stunning scenery of New Zealand’s Mackenzie Basin, using true historical events surrounding the European settlers in South Canterbury in the late 1800s.
Guy Pender
Eligible, handsome, witty and charming, Guy Pender is looking for a purpose in life, maybe even a wife to join him in his desire to return to New Zealand, where he hopes to be reunited with his friends at Applecross Station. His experience of romantic love, so far, has been one of misunderstood passion from an unexpected quarter.
Three Cedar Trees
Three cedar trees grow beside the Applecross homestead in New Zealand’s South Island. Precious trees, carried from Scotland across the world as seedlings. A poignant reminder of home. As they mature, so too do Freddie, the eldest son of Sophia Mackenzie, and Ben and Ed, twin sons of Nancy Lawton.

Candyman Remake Trailer, Release Date, Cast and Details
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
It’s been over 20 years since Hollywood evoked the vengeance-fueled specter of horror franchise Candyman, but the hiatus is coming to an end. With Hollywood’s reboot/remake epoch showing no signs of slowing down, and the buzz surrounding Blumhouse’s recent Halloween sequel/reboot, it appears that the Candyman’s cinematic rebirth is nigh.
Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions have conjured a new Candyman manifestation. Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directed the film off a screenplay by Peele and Win Rosenfeld. The film is a “spiritual sequel” that “returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.”
The project arose after the rights—originally held by the now-defunct PolyGram Filmed Entertainment and distributed by Tri-Star—recently became available. MGM will produce with Monkeypaw, with Universal Pictures set to distribute.
Candyman Remake Release Date
Candyman is now set to unleash wanton vengeance on October 16.
The date represents yet another pandemic-caused shift, this time from September 25, which itself was a 3-month coronavirus-dealt delay from a scheduled June 12 premiere.
Candyman Remake Trailer
Check out the latest trailer for Candyman, which teases the titular vengeance-seeking hook-handed haunter as an omnipresent threat that, in an ever-timely scenario, has been fueled by ongoing injustices perpetrated on African-Americans in its Chicago setting.
You can also check out the debut teaser trailer, which director Nia DaCosta dropped back on June 17.
CANDYMAN, at the intersection of white violence and black pain, is about unwilling martyrs. The people they were, the symbols we turn them into, the monsters we are told they must have been. pic.twitter.com/MEwwr8umdI
— Nia DaCosta (@NiaDaCosta) June 17, 2020
Candyman Remake Cast
Yahya Abdul-Mateen II headlines the film, as first reported by Variety. His character is named Anthony McCoy. The momentum-riding New Orleans-born actor recently made a (literal) splash on the big screen as signature comic book villain Black Manta in hit DC movie Aquaman (with sequel prospects glistening), and co-starred in Black Mirror‘s much-discussed “Striking Vipers” episode. He also played a prominent role on HBO’s acclaimed Watchmen sequel television series. Interestingly, his casting in this Jordan Peele-produced Candyman project will be a quick reunion, since he’s already banked an appearance in Peele’s second horror movie, Us.
Tony Todd reprises his role as the titular tragic supernatural stalker, Daniel Robitaille, a.k.a. Candyman. However, the early teasers and various ephemera seem to indicate that the role—despite being central to the story—won’t be as prominent as it was in the franchise’s past iterations.
Teyonah Parris co-stars as Brianna Cartwright. Parris has recently broken out with a memorable role in Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk. She also is set to appear in Marvel’s WandaVision.
Also in the main cast are Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (Misfits, Dracula) and Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead, Euphoria, If Beale Street Could Talk). Vanessa Williams, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Carl Clemons-Hopkins and Miriam Moss also field roles.
Interestingly, the Chicago-based film tapped a bevy of local talent for supporting roles, as The Chicago Sun-Times reported. They consist of the following:
Brian King (The Chi, Widows), Kyle Kaminsky (DriverX, One Night in Hollywood), Carl Clemons-Hopkins (The Chi, Canal Street) and Cedric Mays (Chicago Med, The Chicago Code).
The film also cast local celebrated stage actors Rebecca Spence (Rivendell Theatre Ensemble’s “How the World Began” and Steppenwolf’s “Mary Page Marlowe”) and Christiana Clark (“The Winter’s Tale” at the Goodman). The film will feature the presence of some non-actor Second City talent, with local news broadcasters Nancy Pender (formerly of WFLD-Channel 32) and Pam Jones (WGN-AM 720), who won’t stray too far from their skill set, since they’ll be playing television reporters in the film.
Candyman Remake Details
Nia DaCosta directs her second feature film here after having fielded the searing 2018 drama, Little Woods, which starred Tessa  Thompson and Lily James.
Candyman is yet another horror/suspense project for Peele, who has parlayed success from horror thriller Get Out (which earned three Oscar nods and a Best Original Screenplay win,) into a genre run (amongst several other projects,) that continued with Us, and the television reboot of The Twilight Zone. Peele produced the project, which he co-wrote alongside Win Rosenfield.
The project is Peele’s first offering in the traditional slasher genre of horror films. The original 1992 movie—written and directed by Bernard Rose, based on Clive Barker’s short story from his Books of Blood collection, “The Forbidden”—starred Tony Todd as the titular hook-handed undead urban legend boogeyman who spits out swarms of bees and haunts a housing project in Chicago.
The movie’s twist on Barker’s white-and-blonde boogeyman added a socio-political layer by reinventing the killer as a black man—lynched back in 1890, suffering a severed hand before being smothered with honey and stung to death by bees—who modernly manifests in the Second City as the Candyman, a vengeful spirit that, in urban legend fashion, can be summoned by saying his name five times in front of a mirror. Virginia Madsen starred in the first film as Helen Lyle, a graduate student researching urban legends whose curiosity becomes consequential.
Candyman was not a runaway box office success and yielded about $25.8 million in its domestic-only release. However, it was successful enough to justify a theatrically-released sequel in 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, which only grossed $13.9 million, leading to its final entry, the 1999 straight-to-video sequel, Candyman: Day of the Dead. Tony Todd played the spectral serial killer in all three films.
We’ll keep you updated on the Candyman reboot movie as things develop!
