Premise: In this world, there are seven powerful witches that serve the king. Among them, the ‘Silent Witch’ is particularly notable as she has managed to achieve what was thought to be impossible: performing magic without a chant. Her true identity is Monica, a quiet girl who lives isolated in the country side with her familiar cat Nero. Occasionally, she is asked to perform missions for the royal family. This time, she’s to go undercover at a prestigious school to protect the prince Felix.

This is based off a web novel and it has a lot of the structural issues that I often complain about with web novels in that there’s sometimes no clear direction, the plot looses steam about halfway through, and the conclusion doesn’t feel entirely fitting for a volume. Aside from that, I mostly enjoyed this volume. There’s some really good comedic moments, the story is interesting enough, and most of the characters are likeable. It meandered a bit at times but was mostly enjoyable overall. I am a little bit worried that the story may introduce a romance or harem somewhere down the line, given how many attractive guy characters there seem to be, but this volume is romance free which I always appreciate.

In particular, Monica is a protagonist that’s easy to relate to and root for. She’s shy and struggles to introduce herself or give words of gratitude to others. Her relationship with Nero was really cute and a highlight of the volume and Nero himself is probably my favourite character. As for the side characters, I really like Isabel, a girl who goes undercover together with Monica and sees her as an older sister but plays the role of the villainess bullying her in public, and Lana, an ojou-sama who befriends Monica quickly at school. They’re both really charming and I enjoyed their relationships with Monica. Wasn’t a fan of Felix though, or his fellow student council members, which is probably the second half of this volume wasn’t as enjoyable as the first for me because it focused a lot on them.

Recommended for: 

Definitely recommend to fans of witches and cats. There’s some really good cat content in this book. This is also a good read if you like shy protagonists.

Don’t know whether I’ll be reading the second volume or not though. As much as I liked this volume, I’m worried that the second one will focus even more on the student council members and, given that this series is going to be a bit more expensive than my usual purchases, it may not be worth it. We’ll see.

I use the name "Akira" for the protagonist as he is so named in the manga. There is a good ending, bad ending, and normal ending

"Good morning Akira." Akechi walked up to him in the train station on an early Monday morning. "I hope you got more sleep than I did..." He chuckled lightheartedly. "What bus are you taking?" 

A bus sped up to their stop at that moment and Akira pointed to it. "Fancy that, me too." Akechi smiled, and the two of them got on. 

Akira noticed that Akechi looked noticeably pale and commented on it. 

"Oh no, I'm fine really. I've been been getting less sleep lately since I've been researching these Phantom Thieves. I guess it's been eating up a lot of my time." 

Akira nodded, trying not to make any nervous gestures for fear that Akechi would notice. But he didn't seem to notice because he was too distracted by a harsh stop that the train made. He made a pained expression and squeezed his fingers together in his lap. 

Akira asked if he was alright and he perked up at once. 

"Of course! I'm just thinking about what I'm going to say on the talk show I'm going on this morning. Could I maybe run it by you?" Akira nodded and Akechi dove into a speech about the Phantom Thieves. 

Akira tried not to reveal any signs of nervousness but he could feel the back of his neck sweating. He was saved the trouble however, when the train made another sharp stop and Akechi was thrown off guard again. "Sorry... I lost my train of thought. Just give me a minute." 

Akira could see Akechi's cheek glistening with sweat and noticed he was swallowing an awful lot. He asked once more if Akechi was really okay and he got his first honest answer. 

"Actually... I haven't been feeling well since last night. I thought it would go away on its own but it's only seemed have gotten worse." He told Akira.

I was really hoping I would be over my reading slump this month but it didn’t happen. I do feel like I’m getting there but it just hasn’t happened yet. I don’t have much to say for this month so I’ll just answer the question that I get most: where did I read [insert light novel title]? Almost every book that I talk about on this blog is something that I bought from BookWalker in Japanese. Occasionally, I’ll talk about something that I have a physical version of but those cases are rare. I put information for official English releases in the blog posts so if nothing’s there, you can assume that one hasn’t been announced yet. All of this information can be found in the About Me section on my blog which is why I don’t respond to questions about this.

New volume of Urasekai Picnic next month!

I was hoping to get the new KonoRano but BookWalker doesn’t seem to be able to sell it this year so that’s a shame. If you were curious I voted for: Kami wa Game ni Ueteiru, Tensei Oujo to Tensai Reijou, Hamefura, Binbou Reijou, and Overwrite. In characters, I voted for Katarina (Hamefura), Anis (Tensei Oujo), Moinca (Silent Witch), Yoshi (Overwrite), Lev (Tsuki to Laika), and Fey (Kami wa Game). For artists, I voted for Tomose Toiro, Suou, and Nanna Fujimi. It’s a shame I can’t see the official ranking but I do know that Kami wa Game ranked fairly high which is good to hear.
