Thanks to Bookclub where we read Bloodlines outloud on the internet, I've been spouting off character interpretations left and right and of course I've been overthinking one about Adrian recently:
When Adrian goes to see his dad, he ostensibly seeks to gain a few things from it: money for his living expenses, for his dad to show some interest in his life, and information about his mom so that he can have contact with her while she is incarcerated.
Sydney notices that, in spite of this, that Adrian has chosen to specifically dress and behave in ways he knows won't endear his dad to him: he wears jeans that are getting holes in them (not jeans that are designed that way, ones that specifically are getting worn down), he crumples up his shirt so it has wrinkles, and then when he gets to the restaurant he orders a martini immediately.
None of this is set up to get Adrian what he wants, which is first and foremost access to his mom. When everything falls apart its easy to look at the scene and read Adrian as argumentative and not even trying to give his dad any leeway, even as Sydney tries to stay out of the father / son fight so Adrian can have a chance at getting some of what he came for. This obviously ends badly, with his dad laughing at the thought that his son could or would want anything serious from him. He writes Adrian off without a thought and then tries to apologize to Sydney for Adrian's existence with a payoff.
So why did Adrian go about it the way that it did?
I see it as a defense mechanism, one that I can relate to. When you are viewed as the bad kid, the worthless one, there is a deeply entrenched defense mechanism that comes about over time. If someone always expects the worst from you, at a certain point you lean into it - both because its generally easier than trying to change their mind, and also because it hurts less.
I think that no matter what Adrian did, his conversation with his dad would've gone the same way. He would have asked for money and told he was irresponsible, he would have tried to tell his dad he was going back to college and trying to be better and his dad would've written him off, and when he asked for a way to contact his mom his dad would've told him no and that it was his fault she was in prison.
Now imagine this scene, going exactly the same way, but Adrian is putting on the best version of himself he can. He's wearing the right clothes, following his father's lead, sober and stays calm the whole time. And his father still puts him down -- not for who he is now but for who he thinks Adrian is.
So Adrian puts on the wrinkled, messy clothes. He orders the martini. He orders the second martini.
Because this way, when his dad writes him off, at least Adrian has the comfort of knowing he wasn't trying the best he had. At least his best isn't proven to be not enough.

hello! this is not meant to be a bother, but i was wondering if you happened to have a list of fcs for your muses or if you’d be willing to type one out? again very much not trying to be a bother or anything just honestly curious and would like to know!
hi friend !! not a bother at all !! almost all of my fcs are different from canon so it's probably hard to keep up ! I have a lot of muses so I'll add it under the cut ! I've been away from tumblr for a long time so if you see something that isn't super accurate please don't hesitate to let me know !! I relied real heavily on rph resources & tried to google search as much as possible but I know it's not always the best & I wanna stay true to what I can !! also pls forgive the non-formatting the list is long & I am literally copy & pasting this . ( also also if anyone's name is misspelled it's literally because I wrote this as I went & not intentional - some of them may also be abbreviated I can't remember if I went back & fixed it )

So I’m nearly halfway through The Golden Lily (Bloodlines 2), you know the spin-off that “I remember not being as good as the original, but I’m still gonna reread too, because I’m a sucker for the universe itself,” and I have thoughts:
The “not as good as the original” notion probably comes from the fact that after Last Sacrifice (VA #6) Bloodlines feels like a regression. Vampire Academy did start out rooted in the high school sphere, and damn, there was a big batch of cattiness and pettiness there (which worked well, I’m not saying it did not), but as we moved forward, we also moved away from that milieu (and physical space), up to a point where in the last book we basically forget about the actual Academy altogether--hell, the last book is a real, high-stakes action-thriller-mystery with a romance subplot. And then Bloodlines goes right back to high school pettiness. Which, in itself, is not a bad thing, it’s just a harsh and jarring change.
Rose is a doer. She is impulsive and brash, and that makes her entertaining to read about. Also, it’s easier to write action-filled scenes with a charater like that. Sydney, on the other hand, is a thinker. Even an over-thinker. She is multi-faceted, and I do believe it’s a good thing we have such different protagonists, but, once again, it’s a bit of work to adjust our expectations after Rose.
VA is, how to say it... heavier on the instant gratification. Each book has a central problem, and, despite the cliffhangers, those central problems are more-or-less solved by the end of the book. Sure, there are seeds for what’s to come, and that might be one of the favorite things about the series (like how the seed of Victor knowing about Strigoi restoration is right there in book one, even though we’ll only think about that in book four), but Chekov’s gun is fired in every book. Bloodlines, on the other hand, is more drawn out--Clarence might be rambling about vampire hunters in book 1, but that volume doesn’t even really want us to really think about their existence. Once again: playing the long game is good writing, it’s just our expectations are adjusted differently.
In connection to that: the romance. In VA, Rose and Dimitri are front and central. Unavoidable from the very beginning. In Bloodlines, meaning the first book, the central romance is basically yet inexistent.
But one thing Bloodlines does that VA didn’t: holy crap, de we lean into toxic masculinity. Like, we encounter a surprsinging number of characters displaying toxic masculinity that is presented as an obstacle the characters need to overcome: Keith, Tom Darnell, Sydney’s father, Nathan Ivashkov taking center stage... And then we have the main character standing up to them, calling them out, and shaking off their own, ingrained, toxic beliefs (which Rose also had to do, btw, so that’s a paralell between her and Sydney).
The approach of parents is another interesting point: in VA, Dimitri’s father got a passing mention, we hate him, let’s move one. Olena is basically a healthier Mrs. Weasley. Janine--despite Rose’s disdain for her in the beginning, the narrative message from the get-go is that she is a flawed human being who is trying her best and so Rose should reconciliation a chance. In Bloodlines (at least so far; my memories are even fainter with these books, I only have vague ideas what is ahead of me), the mothers are mostly absent, and instead we focus on the fathers, who are basically presented as unredeemable from the start, and as one of the main reasons for the characters’ suffering.
