The search continues
We based ourselves in Inverness, the Highland capital, for a few days whilst we viewed some more properties - some near Loch Ness, one in the Highlands and a couple towards Aberdeen.
We had a free day over the weekend, so we booked a room in Gairloch and spent Saturday afternoon driving through some of the most spectacular country in this sceptred isle. After a leisurely breakfast on Sunday, we hit the road again; this time through the majestic scenery of Torridon in the pouring rain (of course) before following the wild switchback of the North Coast 500 route over the Applecross peninsula. Inverness beckoned again, and we headed back again for more viewings on Monday & Tuesday.
Pressing legal matters meant we had to finally head south again on Wednesday. Although we’d hoped to pick off viewings in Cairngorm National Park and the Borders on the way home, they proved impossible to organise within our schedule. Looks like we’ll be heading north again soon...

Highland Adventure Day 2: Loch Ness, Culloden, Dunrobin Castle & John O’Groats
Day 1: Culross & Inverness
The second day of our trip began with a drive to the tip of Loch Ness. Like Inverness, everyone I know told me that Loch Ness is not really worth the trip... and they were right. My advice would be to skip Loch Ness and go instead to Loch Lomand in the Trossachs, honestly! But because we were north and because we felt like we had to, we took a few obligatory pics of the lake, my dad was disappointed that we didn’t see Nessie (I sincerely hope he was joking but to this day am not sure), and that was that. Oh and in hindsight the pics I took are pretty terrible so I won’t even share them here 😂
Embarrassingly, I had NO idea that Culloden was near Inverness... I’m not sure why I didn’t know that/why I don’t pay attention to anything, but we decided to go even though it wasn’t in our original plan. And let me tell you, it was SO WORTH IT! The museum is very interesting, the battlefield eerily beautiful... if you have any interest in Scottish history, this is a MUST! And yes, of course, there is an Outlander connection here, and like a nerd fan I took a photo of the Clan Fraser stone. #sorrynotsorry...

Clearly I wasn't the only Outlander fan here...

...which Culloden’s gift shop capitalizes on
From Culloden we drove on to Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland. Or that was the plan, until my dad got sidetracked by Balblair distillery and decided we had to stop. We didn’t take a tour or anything, but we did a tasting- or more accurately my dad and brother did a tasting and I had a single sip of the whisky my dad ended up buying. Needless to say, I drove after that, lol. I’m not a whisky fan but even I have to admit that this was excellent, and it’s not owned by one of the big corporate stooges so win-win!

Dunrobin looks like an actual Disney princess castle, absolutely beautiful. The gardens are exquisite and the castle is situated on the water. Just breathtaking. While touring the grounds, we saw a fantastic presentation of some of the birds that are kept on the estate. The trainer showed us how he trains and rehabilitated a peregrine falcon along with two other birds. Not usually my thing but it was fascinating!

...and posing in front of it pretending to be royalty. My brother was so embarrassed taking these pictures of me (also please note how quickly the sky went from blue to grey)
Tumblr media
But let me give you a fair warning: DO NOT VISIT THE VICTORIAN MUSEUM ON THE CASTLE GROUNDS. There is a sign on the door that says something like “Warning: Large animal heads, some visitors may be offended”, but idiot me thought large animal heads meant, like, really huge deer heads or something. WRONG WRONG WRONG. Because what greets you as you walk through the front door is the neck and head of a fucking giraffe, with an elephant head on the wall just behind (the rest of the walls are filled with any number of deer, fish, moose, etc. etc.). I’m not a vegetarian or anything but I found it EXTREMELY upsetting and was disturbed for the rest of the visit. And other than that sign you get zero warning or indication of what’s inside, which I think is a huge failing on their part.
We then drove the rest of the way to John O’Groats, one of the northernmost points on mainland UK. This area of Scotland was pretty much all of our favorite from the entire trip... we spent two nights at the most AMAZING self-catering apartment, I cannot recommend this place enough, it’s pricey but 150% worth it. I’m already dream planning another visit here...
Tumblr media
We stayed in the white building but each of the six structures has flats you can rent!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apologies, it got dark out for this one. But as you can see, the buildings are directly at the John O’Groats sign, and on the water.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my days this was a tuff one to leave for the last day over 300 step one way, the steps where all sorts of shapes, sizes and levels. i still have no idea why they are there, wasn’t much tourist info to understand the steps. There is a little cafe but they are only open 4 days a week and very rude if you knock/ walk in to ask to use the toilet when they are closed but have the door open!

Nybster Broch is one of the most spectacular Iron age settlements in the north of Scotland. Brochs are unique to north and west of Scotland. Constructed and developed over the period between 600BC and 100 AD. Nybster is easily one of the most accessible brochs in Caithness, which has more of the rounded Iron age communities than anywhere in Scotland. The broch occupies a well-defended position on a promontory, with steep cliffs on the seaward side. It was occupied throughout the late Iron Age and well into the historical period. Throughout this long period of use it evolved into a complex of interlinked stone buildings, connected by passages. It is difficult to interpret the complex of structures surrounding the central broch. Some of the buildings on the seaward side may be Pictish, or at least reused in Pictish ties, and a block-house to the west of the broch may actually predate it, perhaps being as old as 700 BC to 500 BC. Some of the outbuildings associated with the broch have been lost to coastal erosion. The broch itself has an internal diameter of 23 feet, with a wall thickness of roughly 14 feet. Only 5 feet or so of the walls still stand, but that is enough to give a very clear outline of the broch construction and layout. Nybster was first excavated by Sir Francis Tress Barry in the late 19th century. Apart from the exhaustive excavations of the site, Tress Barry's major contribution was a rather odd tower built to commemorate his nephew. This memorial, known as Mervyn's Tower, seems to have been built with stones removed from the excavated broch, and is decorated with rather bizarre carvings of gargoyles, and set with plaques commemorating the archaeological work of Tress Barry. . . @visitscotland @djiglobal @caithnessbycamera @hiddenscotland @love.scotland @this_is_scotland . . #bluecrustproductions #adventuresofbluecrust #visitscotland #scotland #scotlandshots #nybsterbroch #nc500 #broch #northcoast500 #caithness #nc500route #scottishhistory #history #roadtrip #nybster #johnogroats #wick #Caithness #brochharbour #nature #highlands #northcoast500 #archaeology #NybsterBroch #Broch #amazing #dji #drone #dronephotography #dronestagram (at Nybster Broch) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByJHFsqHl6K/?igshid=1044wl8a7jqdp

Highland Adventure Day 1: Culross & Inverness
Welcome to day one of our trip around Scotland! For a wee bit of background, check out my post from yesterday. Also, apologies for the unedited photos below, lol.
We left Edinburgh around noon, and after a quick stop near the airport to drop my son off at the kennel, we drove to Culross in Fife. This quaint little town has been on my “to visit” list for a while, and while it’s only an hours drive from Edinburgh, it’s not very easy to get to on public transport. So I figured while we had the rental car and since it was on our way anyway, we might as well drive through.
We had a late lunch at the Biscuit Cafe, and then wandered the streets and waterfront. For those who don’t know, Outlander filmed some scenes in seasons 1 and 2 here, and learning this promoted my dad to say “Is this entire trip just going to places from that show?”. Ahem, NO, dad. The village would be worth a visit regardless!

Me being broody or something in one of the side streets
We then drove up to Inverness, which took about 3 hours (plus stops). Everything anyone has told me about Inverness turned out to be true: it’s not really worth a visit. It’s nice enough but it lacks the old charm of Edinburgh or the spunk of Glasgow. It is, however, a good place to stop for a night on your way further north so that’s what we did. We stayed at the Kingsmills Hotel, about a 20 minute walk from the city centre, and nice and quiet. We walked to town for dinner, and though we were underwhelmed by Inverness itself, we had a good dinner at Prime on the River Ness.
Tumblr media
This is not a very photogenic city, but I did manage this shot from the river!
Will share Day 2 tomorrow!

The Caithness Chamber of Commerce hosted such a great event and to be apart of it was amazing being able to network with other members and discuss their business'. It is a real testiment to the companies in North Sutherland and Caithness; building and investing in the local area. I had the honour of meeting HRH Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay, here is a photo that was taken of us, discussing UAV's and their uses in different industries now and in the future. HRH Prince Charles also managed to spot Loch More on the footage and told of his time spent up there as a youngster fishing. #Highlanddrones #HRH #UAV #drones #networking #chamberofcommerce #Caithness #uav #scotland #scottishhighlands #scenery #dji #beautiful #nc500 #nc500route #drone #dronestagram #dronephotography #visitscotland #instadronescotland #explorescotland #travel #ig_today #ig_travel #ig_scotland #aerialphotography #photooftheday #picoftheday #droneoftheday #dronesdaily #dronefly #natgeotravel #fromwhereidrone #natgeoyourshot #thisisscotland #igscotland @northcoast500 @visitscotland @venture_north @visitcaithness @visitsutherland @insta.scotland @capturingbritain @loves_united_scotland @loves_scotland @this_is_scotland @love.scotland @scotland_insta @hiddenscotland @scotlandexplore @ig_scotland @scotland_greatshots @viewsofscotland @xplore_scotland @discover.scotland @djiglobal @polarpro @inteluk @samsunguk @airbnb @lightroom @adobe @reuters @bbcscotnews @bbcscotland @bbc_travel @mraxessories @droneoftheday @airpixels @hiddencaithness @mackayshotel (at Mackays Hotel, Wick)

***** NEW ARTWORK ***** A wonderful depiction of Sarclet Bay - A natural haven formed by a sloping beach between dramatic high sided cliffs, providing nature’s own windbreak . Reflections of Sarclet Bay’s past history are echoed by revetments and shingle slipways. At the head of the beach are the ruins of two storehouses/curing houses waiting to be discovered, a hand-winch and capstan too , all reminiscent of Sarclet Bay’s historic past of herring fishing to the people of Caithness. #farnorthscot #farnorthscotland #sarclet #sarcletharbour #nc500 #nc500route #caithness #janemacrae 'Sarclet Bay' by Caithness born artist Jane MacRae.
