Uuhhhh! This one took forever for me to do. Of all the Nic Cage movies to give me trouble, you would not think it would be Con Air. XD But I finally figured it out. I'm in kind of a weird expressionist-y phase at the moment, so all my attempts at Con Air kept failing. Con Air is many things, but weird and artistic it is not. So what I ended up doing was actually printing out an enlarged version of my tiny thumbnail, doing pencils over that, then scanning it back in. Doing so gave this one an interesting gritty texture (fitting for Con Air), which was a lot of fun to build on.Con Air is one of the pinnacles of stupid over the top schlocky action movies of the 90's. 100% recommended, a hoot from start to finish. (Plus John Malkovich and Steve Buscemi.)

Birdy is actually a movie I hadn't seen before deciding to do Nic Cage November. I was searching some free streaming services for Nic Cage movies to watch, and Birdy popped up. I went in cold, didn't know a thing about it. It blew me away. It's a masterpiece. Both Nic Cage and Matthew Modine are superb in it.

Nic Cage November prompt 4: Fun

I must ask you, is there anything more fun than Cage's Ghost Rider? (There isn't.) The movie that saw into my little goth soul, truly cemented my teenage crush on both Cage and Wes Bentley, and spured me to read a ton of comics. I sought out the first appearance of Blackheart in Ann Nocenti's Daredevil issue from the year of my birth and I continue to love this character with my whole heart. Some chaos magic shit.

This year I made my teenage dreams come true by writing the Blaze/Blackheart slash I always wanted. (18+😈)

Not an easy watch, but a must watch just the same. Both Nicolas Cage and Elisabeth Shue are fantastic.

Nic Cage November #3: "Bad"

Drive Angry is pretty unanimously considered to be a terrible movie. I unironically love it and think it's pretty near to perfect 😅

One night I was snuggled up with my partner and, wanting a bed time story, they asked me to tell them the plot of the Cage movie I was going to watch with my bestie the next day. It was Drive Angry 😅 As soon as I said, "well, it starts with Nicolas Cage escaping from Hell," they were wide awake. They were like, "wait, I thought this was going to be boring! ... go on." The next morning they blessed me with: "road head," and this fic was born 😛 (obv 18+)

This is actually the first piece I did for Nic Cage November: Martin Scorsese's Bringing Out the Dead.So much of the film is about Nic Cage's internal struggle, so I felt it would be appropriate to do an intense and intimate portrait. Clashing colors, textures, etc. As I'm in the healthcare field myself (Chiropractic, so not nearly as intense or chaotic as emergency care--though I do have some stories, huuhuu), there is so much about Bringing Out the Dead that resonates with me. The good, the bad, the humorous, the horrific. It's fantastic.

Nic Cage November prompt 6: interesting

For me, it has to be A Score to Settle.

Of all of Cage's not-quite-revenge movies, I think this is the best. Forget Rage, forget Pig, its about A Score to Settle. It's a really touching portrayal of grief while still having gritty action-movie fun with itself.

This flick has me in an absolute stranglehold and I think it's one of Cage's finest performances.

Nicolas Cage's first starring role: Valley Girl. An adorable little film; the chemistry and charm of Valley Girl is nothing short of delightful! It quickly became one of my comfort movies. Directed by Martha Coolidge (who also directed one of my all-time favorite comedies, Real Genius). Movies directed by women have a different touch, and a different feel--a certain sensitivity and intimacy. Honestly if Valley Girl had been directed by a man... it would have been a disaster.Also Randy and Julie are together forever. Because I said so.And I went more stylized and exaggerated for this one. Also because I said so.

So many directions to go in for weird! 🤣

As weird as City of Angels is, we can go weirder. For weird I say, Season of the Witch. Because what a weird fucking movie it is. Is it a brilliant Bergman homage? It is terrible and misogynist? I can never quite decide but I know its gay as hell.

1. Favorite! My all-time favorite Cage film has to be Red Rock West.

This flick is perfect as far as I'm concerned. Cage is at his most film-noir-iconic and just scorching fucking hot.

This movie is absolute Cage fanservice. Not only do you have shit like one-handed shirtless pushups, but he gets to run the gamut in terms of performance. Everything is here, from the quiet, under-the-surface stuff to the bubbling rage, the noir staple innocent-man-pushed-too-far, and its disability rep and anti-capitalist to boot.
