"I was thinking of calling it... a hug. Uh, because it rhymes with Grug!"
~~~
Up next for Nic Cage November...
The Croods! I love The Croods, it's adorable. A movie that tricks you into thinking it's about Eep, when it's really about Grug. :heart: We don't get movies about old guys making changes very often--especially animated movies about old guys making changes. Love it.
And of course Nic Cage's performance is a lot of fun! Hits it perfectly--which is unusual for a non voice actor to do.
Inktober? Heck no. In this family we wait for Nic Cage November!
Here're some prompts if anyone else wants to participate in the Cage-hem. First off is The Croods, which I really like because, contrary to what the trailers make you believe; the movie is actually about Grug and not his daughter, Eep. The theme is basically old dogs can learn new tricks, which is not something you see often in animation.
And of course Nic Cage's outrageousness is perfect for the character.
My 2022 Roundup
Tumblr media
Phew! What a year.
2022 started with news of some disappointing corporate shake-ups at The A.V. Club — my main freelance home for the past nine years. After leaving the site in solidarity with my wonderful departing editors, I went all-in on a full-time contract gig with FOX Digital only for that to rather unexpectedly end in mid-November. Add in the tumult that has taken over Twitter in the last third of the year, and I’m ending this year without any of the pillars of stability that have propped me up for my entire career, not to mention nearly my entire adult life.
And, yet, remarkably, I also feel more rejuvenated and excited than I have since the start of the pandemic. After a challenging 2021 took a fairly drastic toll on my mental health, 2022 was filled with adventures that pushed me out of my comfort zone and reminded me that I’m capable of more than I think I am.
I started the year covering virtual Sundance, which was my first experience with a major film festival like that. Then in March I hopped on a plane for the first time since 2015 (!!!) to attend SXSW, where I saw a Dolly Parton concert, watched Nic Cage watch Nic Cage play Nic Cage, and just generally had 10 of the most surreal, exhausting, exhilarating days of my life.
May brought my first-ever on camera interview, with Cha Cha Real Smooth writer/director/star Cooper Raiff, who was in town for the Chicago Critics Film Festival. Then June took me to L.A., where I watched a dear college friend get married and took my first-ever trip to Disneyland! (I also dealt with my first major cancelled flight snafu and managed to have only a minor emotional breakdown in LAX.)
The adventures didn’t stop there, as I took a relaxing trip home to St. Louis in August, dashed around like a madwoman covering the Chicago International Film Festival in October, and took a semi-spontaneous trip to New York City in November, where I squeezed in five Broadway shows amongst catching up with friends old and new.
The year wasn’t all easy, of course, especially when it came to the major mental adjustment of switching from a freelance lifestyle to the structure and demands of a full-time job creating a brand new section with a two-person team.
And it was incredibly bittersweet to say goodbye to some of the long-time anchors of my career: My episodic recaps of This Is Us (my favorite show I’ve ever gotten to write about in such an in-depth way) and especially my long-time A.V. Club column When Romance Met Comedy, which came to a close after 101 columns totaling 187,227 words.
I’m especially proud that my final four WRMC entries (Roman Holiday, Win A Date with Tad Hamilton!, 2005′s Pride & Prejudice, and How To Be Single) really sum up the scope of what I was trying to do with this four-year project. And though it was kind of nice to take a break from writing about rom-coms for most of 2022, I feel like the genre is calling me back again in 2023.
Other highlights of the year included celebrating Nathan Chen’s gold medal win at the Beijing Olympics (I’ve been following his skating career since 2016!), spotting Nate from The Bachelorette at my screening of Black Adam, re-hauling my wardrobe, getting my bivalent booster (a major turning point in pandemic safety — get yours today!) and reconnecting with friends I hadn’t seen in person in years.
I also created a public Instagram account, recapped “The Slap” Oscars, delved deep into the nerd-spheres of the MCU, Stranger Things, and House of the Dragon, and kept things going strong with my podcast Role Calling, where we covered the careers of Meg Ryan, Antonio Banderas, and Zac Efron, and released a series of Lord of the Rings specials that I’m especially proud of.
Oh and I picked my 10 favorite films of 2022, even though this is the first time in years that I didn’t actually publish any official year-end coverage:
Marcel the Shell with Shoes On
Living
Cha Cha Real Smooth
Elvis
Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.
The Woman King
Aftersun
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Saint Omer
Turning Red
As we head into 2023, I’ll leave you with wishes for a Happy New Year and a roundup of all the major writing and podcasts I did in 2022. If you enjoyed my work, you can support me on Kofi or PayPal. Or you can just share some of your favorite pieces with your friends! That really means a lot.
Why I stopped reading Grimrose Girls
Tumblr media
Grimrose Girls was a book in my TBR pile I was hugely looking forward to but had to stop reading because of some of the choices the author made, which I found hugely disappointing (and possibly very problematic). Those of you who know me will know this isn’t something I usually do, and often even if I don’t like a book I’ll force myself to finish it.
I couldn’t do that with this one and I’d like to tell you why.
After the mysterious death of their best friend, Ella, Yuki, and Rory are the talk of their elite school, Grimrose Académie. The police ruled it a suicide, but the trio are determined to find out what really happened. When Nani Eszes arrives as their newest roommate, it sets into motion a series of events they couldn't have imagined. As the girls retrace their friend's last steps, they uncover dark secrets about themselves and their destinies, discovering they're all cursed to repeat the brutal and gruesome endings to their stories until they can break the cycle. This contemporary take on classic fairytales reimagines heroines as friends attending the same school. While investigating the murder of their best friend, they uncover connections to their ancient fairytale curses and attempt to forge their own fate before it's too late.
This book made a lot of promises and I was frankly super looking forward to it. So I make it about a quarter through the book and get to the reveal about the fairy tale characters and I realize something neat. The character’s names hint at their nature. "Ella" "Ash"worth is Cinderella. Yuki's name means Snow. The "Shiro" part of her surname may mean white. Rory's surname means Briar. Edric's name was likely chosen due to is proximity to Eric from the Disney movie, likewise Pippa and Phillip. Nani means "Beauty" and her surname means "Clever". What fun, I originally thought. The author obviously put a lot of thought into the names!
So then I got to Svenja, the only transwoman in the book. Svenja's name means "boy" "young man" or "swan".
Vampire Roomies - Thoughts
So this idea I'm working on involves a young, relatively milquetoast vampire, and that occasionally dementia-riddled version of Count Orlok I mentioned a while back.
I'm thinking Klaus (the Nosferatu expy), sometimes forgets to add in some mortal levels of subtlety to his actions. He's always with Damian, a more commonplace vampire, and so occasionally forgets to, well, make sense on the social level, even if his instances of social faux pas can be easily contained.
One of these instances is Christmas. Damian shops and preps weeks ahead of time and manages his delight at messing behind Klaus' back and that of a few allied mortals pretty effectively. You could say he's a pretty good liar for a vampire, and Klaus tends to have a nose for lies - literally. The end result is you'd never know he's shopped for you even if you ransacked the house or the household's email accounts to try and find your gift ahead of time.
Klaus, however, isn't quite so subtle. He tends not to head out to shop unaccompanied, for reasons related to self-control and to his potentially losing himself with no means of going back, and laboriously orders things so they're shipped pre-wrapped and tagged.
So, anywhere between mid-November and late in December, you can see Klaus sit up from his chair in the living room like a dog that's just heard a disturbance, to then sniff the air a few times and then more or less glide towards the front porch with a look of sheer malevolent glee. He'll throw the door open, nervously rubberneck about, snatch the expected package and then scuttle to the most-obvious corner of the house, very loudly cackling the whole while.
To make things worse, it's entirely possible he'll forget what he's bought for you or that something else catches his attention mid-shopping spree. Profess a mild interest towards a new modern hobby, as a vampire trying to play catch-up, and Klaus might interpret this as meaning you want the exhaustive aficionado's kit for Christmas.
Or he'll, you know, find a sequined novelty pillow that changes between glittery red or a pixellized Nicholas Cage face depending on your viewing angle and suddenly think this could make a great present.
And no, Klaus does not know who Nic Cage is.
I like Nicolas Cage and have enjoyed a lot of his movies. Although, I don't think I have seen any of his recent ones so I don't know what he's like lately. I seem to come across quite a few titles on Netflix and I assume a lot of them are "direct-to-video" releases. Speaking of Netflix, Prospect is apparently coming in November. At least in the U.S.
PROSPECT ON NETFLIX WOOOO!
I’ve only seen Nic in National Treasure so I don’t really know much about him! But I’m sure it’ll be fun to see Pedrito in a comedy!
idk if anyone else has sent this but Scott is in the filming process for the fnaf movie! With Blumhouse Productions. There was news of it just last november that they'd start filming this year. I'm pretty sure the nic cage one is a company having a "same idea".
I mean as someone only barely fandom-adjacent, I’m pretty excited for the nic cage one, I just hope the dude that came up with the idea can do something similarly neat! blumhouse is one of those horror houses than can reeeeally go either way, imo
Mandy is my favorite Nicolas Cage movie. It's hypnotic and weird and interesting and wonderful. Beautiful and strange visuals, fantastic score, and Nic Cage giving a fantastic performance. I love it.
One of my favorite things about the movie is really Mandy and Red's relationship. It's so gentle and tender. And perhaps my favorite scene from the movie is right at the beginning, when Red comes back home and just watches Mandy draw. We all know how artists don't typically like it when people watch them work--but Mandy isn't bothered at all by him observing her create. It's beautiful.
And that's it for Nic Cage November this year my lovelies! There's more I wanted to do... but there's always next year.
Nic Cage November prompt 4: Fun
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I must ask you, is there anything more fun than Cage's Ghost Rider? (There isn't.) The movie that saw into my little goth soul, truly cemented my teenage crush on both Cage and Wes Bentley, and spured me to read a ton of comics. I sought out the first appearance of Blackheart in Ann Nocenti's Daredevil issue from the year of my birth and I continue to love this character with my whole heart. Some chaos magic shit.
This year I made my teenage dreams come true by writing the Blaze/Blackheart slash I always wanted. (18+😈)
It felt like a cult via /r/atheism
It felt like a cult
So, I deliver packages via Amazon Flex as a side hustle and I had a...terrifying experience I wanted to share.
Over the course of delivering packages with my wife riding along yesterday, I came across one that had "Sister [name]" above the address. I figured it was like a Catholic Nun or something. Lot of elderly in the community I was delivering to. As a former Catholic, I'm not unfamiliar with the powerful guilt-trips nuns wield like crusaders wielding swords. I was just going to run up, drop the package at the door, and get back to my car...
Sadly, as soon as my foot hit the step of the porch the front door flew open and a blonde-haired woman greeted me. Her blue eyes were held open wide and she smiled broadly. She got super close, like pre-pandemic close. She wore a white gown. She told me her name and that she was a recruiter for whatever church of Jesus Christ. Two other women were in the house, standing and looking at me through the door. Also wearing white gowns, big smiles and WIDE EYES.
It was almost as if they had never seen a black man before and was trying to hide their surprise. I felt a moment of...curiosity. Like, damn, what kinda kool-aid you guys got? Then the lady asked if I would sit with them and hear about the Glory of Christ...one of the other women started walking very slowly toward the door and then I started to get "Wicker Man" vibes and thought about how much effort the police would put into my disappearance. I told her I was an Atheist and had to get back to my job, but she grabbed my arm and said it wouldn't take long.
All I could think about was that movie and Nic Cage burning alive at the end.
My wife rolled the window down and told me to hurry up and I said, "Sorry" and fucken bolted.
What in the actual fuck. I get it, it's probably a legit religion, but WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MINDS thinks that's the right time, apparel or situation to discuss Jesus Christ?
I get goosebumps just thinking about it.
Edit to add: ...now that I think about it, those gowns were like KKK robes...all they needed was pointy hats.
