the best type of sci fi is the kind where they have a legitimate explanation for every single thing and there’s only one or two jumps in logic, and it’s basically a very long expression of “if this one natural law was different, how would our world look?” (i.e. Jurassic park book)

and the worst type of sci fi is the kind where they TRY to do the previous, but never get the memo that for it to work, at least 95% of the science needs to check out, so they just jam a bunch of words together and try to make it make sense (i.e. most time travel)

and the second best type of sci fi is the kind where the writer understands that there are scientific limitations that make their story incompatible with hard sci fi, and instead opt for the most realistic option- characters that know the baseline level of things, but don’t know anything beyond modern scientific understanding, because why would they! I can’t describe to you how an internal combustion engine works but I sure can drive a car! (i.e. the first Enders game)
