Daryl was pretty upset when you got hurt while you were out hunting with him. He was teaching you how to track - something the two of you had done together numerous times over the last few months, but something had gone wrong this time. A rotting walker hidden under a lot of dirt and debris had grabbed your foot out of nowhere, causing you to tumble down a few foot slope, hurting your ankle.
Daryl killed the walker and within seconds was by your side. “Ya alright?” He asks as he glances around, checking your surroundings. When he knows the coast is clear he bends to help you up but you let out a screech when you put pressure on your right ankle, collapsing back to the ground. “Shit,” Daryl mutters, taking your foot into his lap. He raises your pant leg to look at the ankle and gently moves it, watching your face tense up in pain when he does so. “Probably sprained it.” He grumbles.
Of course he blames himself for you getting hurt. It had nothing to do with him but in his mind, you wouldn’t have gotten hurt if he had been paying closer attention. Thankfully you guys were only a short walking distance away from the walls of Alexandria, but you still weren’t going to be able to walk there. Daryl helped you onto your feet, making sure you kept your right foot raised while you leaned on him for support. You held onto his shoulder as best as you could as he guided you up the slope and through the trees, hopping along slowly.
Eventually Daryl gave up and told you to stop, helping you lean your back against a tree so that he could let you go. He readjusted his crossbow so that it was swung around his chest, then lowered himself in front of you and extended his arms. “Hop on,” You stare at his back for a second before letting out a quick chuckle.
“Seriously?” You ask. Daryl wasn’t normally one for initiating any sort of physical contact, let alone letting you wrap your whole body around him to be carried.
“Serious piggyback. C’mon,” He grumbles, readjusting himself as he waits for you to climb on. You decide not to argue with him and jump onto his back as best as you can. He lets out a huff as he adjusts his grasp on your thighs and you try not to focus on his large hands gripping you there. It wasn’t like you and Daryl had never done anything, being as you had been together since the prison - but it was usually rare that you had any physical affection from the man - not that this was affection.
You clear your head as he begins walking back toward the front gate from the woods, keeping an eye out for the two of you as he carried you. Aaron gave you guys a strange look as he opened the gate up and you hid your face in Daryl’s shoulder, feeling your cheeks burning. Most people knew that you guys were together, but no one ever really saw you guys do anything - so this must have been a sight. You were pretty sure that Daryl wasn’t liking all the looks that he was receiving as he passed by different people on his way to Denise’s “office” to get your ankle checked out, but he didn’t say anything.
After confirming that you had sprained your ankle, Denise wrapped it up for you and gave Daryl instructions on how to take care of you for the next few days. He stood awkwardly with his arms crossed as she showed him how she was wrapping your ankle and told him how to keep your foot positioned. He nodded and grunted every so often and you tried hard to keep a straight face at the scene.
Rick offered to help you get back to the house that you guys shared with him and some of the others, which Daryl surprisingly turned down. Instead, he lifted you up bridal style and carried you back to the house himself. You were sure you were not light to carry and he had to walk over a block to get there, but he didn’t seem to struggle much. He set you down gently in the kitchen on the island counter before moving around to put his things away. You sat there and watched him, trying not to let your sappiness get the best of you. Times like this, where Daryl showed how much he cared about you, really meant a lot to you.
“What?” He asks when he spots you watching him. You shrug your shoulders and look away, your eyes wandering aimlessly around the kitchen. “Hungry?” He asks, approaching one of the cabinets.
“Yeah,” You respond, watching him as he pulled out a few different items.
“How’s it feel?” He asks as he starts spreading peanut butter onto a piece of bread. Watching him do this makes you feel almost domestic, but you ignore the longing feeling and continue watching him.
“Just sore.” You say. He lets out a grunt in response as he folds the two pieces of bread together and hands you the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. He grabs the nearly empty jelly container and leans against the counter across from you, watching you take a bite. He would never admit it, but he didn’t mind taking care of you like this.
“Thanks babe.” You tease by the use of the pet-name. Daryl rolls his eyes with a smirk and shoves two fingers into the container, messily coating them in jelly before jamming them into his mouth. You let out a gasp and giggle at his disgusting behavior, enjoying his jelly covered smirk. “You got a little somethin... There.” You joke, pointing at his whole face. He licks his fingers clean and then his lips before setting the container back onto the counter. “C’mere,” You mutter, motioning him toward you with a finger.
Daryl gives you a look before moving to stand in front of you, basically at the same height now because of your seat on the island counter. You grab his bare arm and tug him closer so that he is standing between your legs. He cocks an eyebrow at you but says nothing, clearly a bit taken aback by your bold actions. You raise your hand up and brush your thumb against the corner of his mouth, capturing the rogue spot of jelly he missed before sticking the tip of your thumb in your mouth to lick it off.
His intense blue eyes watch you as you do so, his expression changing to one that you don’t quite recognize. Taking in the intimacy of your position, you are dying to kiss him. Sure, you’ve kissed before - but it was rare, like most of you physical attention from him. You lean in slowly, giving him a chance to back away if he wants to, but he doesn’t - so you press you lips against his softly.
The kiss is slow and tender but it takes your breath away. You pull away just enough to lean your forehead against his, “Thank you,” You mumble as you move back.
“For wha?” He questions, his husky voice a little deeper than a moment ago.
“Helping me. Being you. Everything.” You say. He studies you for a moment before shrugging.
“Ya hit yer head too?” He taunts halfheartedly, grabbing the jelly again and sticking his middle finger back into it, making you chuckle.
“I dunno maybe.” You joke, picking your sandwich back up and taking another bite. Daryl leans back against the counter and watches you as you guys eat together, taking in the peaceful moment together.

Please Don’t Take Her (Part 2)

Nero thrashed against the nurses and doctors as his beloved wife was wheeled away on the stretcher. As she disappeared through the doors he collapsed to his knees, still writhing against the people holding him back. He didn’t listen to their pleas for him to hold still, and he was close to hurting somebody. But even in his panicked and feared state, all he could do was to continue to struggle against the arms around him. He could use his demon strength he could devil trigger right now. But what good would it do? He reached out towards the still swinging doors, desperate to escape the holds of the hospital staff and be with his love.
His love. His wife. His babies. Gone from his grasp, and he watched them get taken away. His eye’s burned with tears and his throat grew more and sorer as he yelled and berated the staff. But he didn’t care.
“I have to go with her!” he cried, “That’s my wife!”
“Sir please calm down,” one nurse said, though it fell on deaf ears.
“Please! Please let me go!” he kept yelling, “I’m the father! I’m the father!”
“Sir! You must calm down!”
He grew more and more unruly; the demands of the nurses and doctors slowly turned his fear into a rage as they continued to hold him down. He tried to keep control of himself, but he could feel his demonic blood boil as he began to shake. He didn’t want to hurt anyone, even accidentally, but each voice clouding his head only served to feed the beast within him.
“NERO!”
A familiar voice broke through the commotion, and Nero froze. The whole room went quiet and Nero turned towards the voice. The long red coat stood out against the white sterile waiting room, like a beacon of hope in this despair. Nero relaxed and the arms around him fell away. He panted and, in the stillness, he finally was able to let himself go. He felt his damn crumble away as he let himself cry fully. He stumbled away from the hospital staff that held him and into the arms of his uncle where he sobbed uncontrollably.
Dante’s arms encased his nephew, keeping him upright and allowing him to cry his heart out. All the fear and worry coming from his nephew he absorbed. His hand went to Nero’s head, rubbing his hair comfortingly as he hushed the crying young man. Nero mumbled something though Dante couldn’t hear it through his sobs. Dante hushed him softly, letting him know he could let it all out with no shame.
He led Nero to a row of waiting room chairs, urging him to sit down before he passed out. Nero kept his head on this uncle's shoulder, refusing to let go of him. Like a child that had finally found their lost parent in a crowded space. He sniffled and hiccupped into the aged red leather. Through his runny nose, he could smell the worn material and it provided some semblance of comfort and familiarity. Dante’s arm never left Nero’s back as he rubbed his hand up and down. He even gave a few pats then and there.
“I know, kid. I’m right here,” the old hunter said softly, “It’ll be okay.”
It had been some time since they had arrived at the hospital. Nero sat anxiously in the waiting room chairs. No part of him could hold still. Whether it be his leg bouncing or his fingers drumming on the armrest, or even his whole body subtly vibrating. He had stopped crying about an hour ago, but his eyes still burned, and his nose and forehead throbbed with congestion. Dante had offered him a coffee, but he starkly refused, worried that anything in his stomach would end up on the floor.
He tried occupying himself, he really did. Each magazine article he read just turned into alphabet soup on the page. Each news story on the wall-mounted tv went in one ear and out the other. Nothing could quench his utter fear at what was happening to his wife and twins. Merely thinking about it was enough to have his eyes burning with tears again.
If Nero ever prayed in his life. It would be now. Not during the boring sermons in church back on Fortuna, not before bed when he lived in the barracks while training to be a holy knight, but here and now, staring into a bright fluorescent light overhead, bearing his soul to whatever god or demon that be. He didn’t even know what for. He didn’t want to give even a modicum of thought to the idea that she or the twins wouldn’t pull through. They had to be alright… they had to be.
“Please don’t take her,” he whispered.
“Nero?” a voice broke him out of his stupor.
“Yes?” he said, voice shaky and uncertain. He stood quickly, paying no mind to the head rush it gave him.
“Are they okay?” he asked.
The nurse swallowed before speaking, “We had to perform an emergency C-section. Both twins were sent to the NICU, but they are both stable and healthy.”
“What about Y/N?” he asked, growing more worried.
“She is also stable. But she lost a lot of blood, and she is in a coma.”
Nero felt cold. He froze. All the color drains from his face and his stomach dropped to the floor. He felt dead on his feet as his eyes drifted to the floor. The nurse was quick to try and reassure him.
“Comas are a bit unpredictable; they can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. But since we were able to stabilize her, we believe she will recover in time.”
Her words did little to bring Nero out of his shocked and hopeless state. Everything before and after the words “she is in a coma,” vanished in thin air. He didn’t even react when Dante came up behind him and guided him down to his chair again before he could collapse. He sat there, holding his head in his hands, staring wide-eyed at the floor. The poor nurse still stood before the two devil hunters, trying to reassure them to little avail.
Finally, after a short near panic attack, Nero raised his head, not hiding his redden and sore eyes.
“Can I see her?” he asked.
“Yes of course,” the nurse replied, “Please, follow me.”
Dante lingered behind in the waiting room while Nero followed the nurse through the doors. The walk through the dull bright hallways lasted for an eternity. The mix of exhaustion and the rush of emotions distorted Nero’s vision. The only clear thing in his sight was the back of the nurse’s head as he lagged behind her. His body felt heavy, his brain felt heavy in his skull as he stumbled through the halls. The corridor stretched impossibly far beyond him, stretching into white oblivion. Where was he even going? When did they last turn? Where was Y/N? Where are his babies?
He heard what he assumed was the nurse’s voice, but he couldn’t make out a single word. It was lost in the sea of his own thoughts and emotions as his mind ran through every scenario, every outcome, every sequential moment leading to where he stood now. Everything he could have done differently to avoid this, everything that he did wrong.
How desperately he wanted this to be a dream, to wake up any moment in bed, with his wife, his hand on her belly feeling their twins kick at his touch. Or better yet, to wake up to the sound of his babies crying from across the room in their crib, desperate for their parent’s attention, and all of this was nothing but a what-if nightmare.
Suddenly the nurse’s voice broke through Nero’s clouded mind as she stopped in front of a door. He nearly ran into her when she stopped, and probably would have just kept walking straight on his own if she had turned.
The nurse gingerly pushed the door open and stepped aside for him to enter. She didn’t enter with him, only shutting the door as quietly as she could behind her. Nero swallowed heavily as he walked over to the bed. His breath felt thick in his lungs when he laid eyes on his wife. His Y/N. The soft light over her bed, illuminating her hair like a halo. Her face was eerily relaxed, and Nero’s stomach churned at the sight. He wanted her to no longer be in pain, to watch her sleep with no discomfort. But not like this, never like this.
His eyes drifted to the IV in her arm, as it draped over her upsettingly flat stomach. Her breaths were slow, deep, and even. And he thanked the universe that she wasn’t hooked up to any breathing tubes. She looked like she finally was comfortable, like how she used to sleep.
He moved towards her bed and lowered himself to his knees. Arms folded, he rested his tired head against them and just stared at her. She looked so peaceful. To just curl up with her, arms tightly woven around her body like ivy, and both of them drifting off to the beat of their hearts, Nero would gladly give his right arm again, and the rest of his body.
His eyes moved to her hand, resting palm up next to her on the sheets, her ring gleaming in the light overhead. His hand found hers and gripped her fingers gently yet firmly. Her hands were warm and for a moment, he was back home, in bed with her, relishing in her warmth as it cradled him beneath the sheets, guiding him over the edge of sleep into unconsciousness.
“Please…” he whispered, “Don’t leave me.”
to be continued...
A/N: YAY! Dante’s here to make things better... right? So I was in a kinda angsty state and this is what came of it. Obviously, it’s from Nero’s POV and what he’s going through, so it’s really wordy with not as much dialogue. I hope I haven’t bored any of you. The next part is going to still be angsty but things will start looking up I promise. Feedback is always appreciated and let me know if you want to be tagged. Thank you so much for reading, and have Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!! :)

Chicken Fried Steak
Chicken Fried Steak. The ultimate in southern comfort food! Tender seasoned steak, coated with a thick batter and fried until golden. Served with a creamy gravy drizzled on top. Simple, basic ingredients is all that is needed to bring this recipe to life in your own kitchen!
This perfect southern comfort meal of chicken fried steak is easy to recreate at home. I am sharing with you all of the tips and tricks you need to know to create a restaurant worthy dish in your own kitchen! This dish is perfect served along with some of Dad’s Famous Mashed Potatoes, or some Roasted Carrots. Finish off with some Slow Cooker Peach Cobbler for a truly southern meal.
Chicken Fried Steak
Hey y’all! It’s Serene from House of Yumm, and I am back with you today to share one of my all time FAVORITE southern comfort foods. Homemade Chicken Fried Steak. It’s a definite classic and a favorite in our home. It’s one of those meals that I don’t make all the time, so it’s a definite special treat when for the family when I do. This dish is so incredibly flavorful, with just a few simple ingredients. Most of which you probably have on hand. The only thing you will need to add to your shopping list is the cube steak! Even though the ingredients list is fairly simple, there are a few tips and tricks in HOW I make this dish that makes it even better than a restaurant. And lucky for you, I’m sharing them all below!!
How to Make Chicken Fried Steak:
Get your meat ready, make sure it’s tenderized, then season both sides with salt and pepper. I like to use kosher salt and coarse ground pepper to add a bit more flavoring. Let the meat sit for about 10 minutes like this before breading.
Start heating your oil in a large skillet.
Prepare the dry ingredients for the breading. Whisk together the flour, salt, pepper, and paprika in a medium size bowl.
In another bowl whisk together the eggs and buttermilk.
Dip the steak into the flour, press the flour into the steak with the palm of your hand. Then dip the steak into the egg mixture, and back to the flour mixture.
When the oil is ready, add the steaks, two at a time into a large skillet, or one at a time in a small skillet. Don’t overcrowd your pan.
Cook for about 5 minutes on one side, spoon some hot oil on the top while it’s cooking. You will notice juices coming from the steak while it cooks. That means it’s cooking! Don’t flip before you see those juices.
Flip the steak and continue cooking for about another 5 minutes. Once both sides are golden brown, remove from the oil and place on a wire rack over a baking sheet. Keep the steaks in the oven at 200 degrees while frying the other steaks and making the gravy.
Why is it called chicken fried steak?
This dish is basically a genius invention. It is NOT made with chicken. But with steak. Steak that is ultra tenderized, breaded, and then fried. Just like you would do with chicken. This dish is southern comfort food at it’s finest.
What meat do I use for chicken fried steak?
For this chicken fried steak recipe you want to go with a cube steak. This is steak that has been tenderized before being packaged. It almost looks like it has been ground, and has small indentations on the surface of it.
If you are unable to get cube steak you can also use another cut of steak called Round Steak, but you will need to tenderize this with a meat mallet prior to using. Almost to the point that the meat is falling apart.
How to make Cream Gravy:
The key to making the chicken fried steak gravy, is to keep the drippings in the pan from making the actual chicken fried steak. Due to shallow frying the steaks there typically isn’t much leftover oil by the time the steaks are done. Which is the perfect amount for making the gravy. IF you have more than 1/4 cup of oil left in your skillet, you will want to pour some out. But make sure you leave all the bits and pieces leftover from the steaks!
Use 1/4 cup of the drippings and oil left from cooking the chicken fried steaks.
Whisk in 1/3 cup of flour. Salt and pepper.
Cook the flour mixture for 4-5 minutes. The flour needs to cook, and this will get rid of the raw flour taste.
Whisk in the milk. Bring this to a simmer. As the gravy simmers for about 5 minutes you will see it thicken.
Taste the gravy and add more seasonings as needed. I find that it typically needs a lot of coarse ground black pepper.
Tips for making the BEST chicken fried steak recipe:
Salt. Salt. Salt.Trust me. This makes all the difference in this dish. Make sure that you season the meat before dipping into the flour and egg mixtures. Sprinkle a healthy dose of salt and pepper on both sides of the meat and let it sit for about 10 minutes before moving on to the dipping. I also love using kosher salt with this recipe. The grains are bigger and it gives a better seasoning to the meat.
Double dip! This will give a nice thick coat of batter on your steak. When dipping the steak into the flour the first time, you want to press the flour down into the meat with the palm of your hand. This helps it stick and hold the rest of the batter from the egg and second flour dip.
Heat the oil.If your oil isn’t heated enough then it won’t cook the meat through. Also keep an eye out for oil that is too hot. To test the oil toss a bit of flour into it. If it sizzles then you’re good! If it doesn’t do anything, then your oil needs to be hotter. If the flour burns, then turn it down.
Shallow fry.We don’t need a lot of oil, I start with about 3/4-1 cup of oil. This is enough to coat the bottom of my pan and come up about halfway up the sides of the steaks. But it doesn’t need to cover the steaks completely.
Spoon some hot oil on the steaks while they cook. This will help the batter stay on the steaks when you flip them. And only flip the steaks once, the more you flip them while cooking, the more chances for your breading to come off.
Use a wire rack. Once you are done frying the steaks, place them on a wire rack that is over a baking sheet. This allows air to circulate all around the steaks, and they aren’t sitting on a paper towel soaked in oil. This keeps the breading nice and crispy and the bottom of your steak won’t get soggy.
Heat your oven to 200 degrees.Place the baking sheet with the steaks in the oven after you fry them. This will keep them warm while you fry the other steaks and make the gravy.
Don’t be shy with the black pepper! The gravy is fairly basic, and the overdose of fresh ground black pepper, or a coarse ground black pepper really is what gives this gravy it’s flavor. If you taste the gravy and feel it’s lacking something, it just needs a bit more pepper.

Chicken Fried Steak. The ultimate in southern comfort food! Tender seasoned steak, coated with a thick batter and fried until golden. Served with a creamy gravy drizzled on top. Simple, basic ingredients is all that is needed to bring this recipe to life in your own kitchen!
Course Main Course
Cuisine American
Keyword chicken fried steak
Ingredients
1.5 pounds cube steak (4 patties)
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon coarse black pepper
1 and 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon coarse ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
3/4 cup buttermilk
3 large eggs
3/4 cup vegetable oil
Cream Gravy
1/4 cup oil and drippings
1/3 cup all purpose flour
3 cups milk
1 teaspoon coarse black pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
Instructions
Preheat oven to 200 degrees. Place a wire rack over a large baking sheet. Set aside.
Pour oil into a large skillet, depending on the size of your skillet you may need more or less oil, pour enough to have the oil come up about 1/4 of an inch deep.
Prepare the meat by ensuring it is tenderized, cube steak comes pre-tenderized. Season both sides of the steak with the 1 tsp kosher salt and 1/2 teaspoon coarse black pepper. Let the steaks sit for about 10 minutes.
Mix the dry ingredients together in a medium size bowl.
Mix the buttermilk and eggs together in another bowl.
Dip the cube steaks, one at a time, into the flour first. Press the flour into the steaks. This ensures a nice coating. Then dip into the egg mixture. Let any excess drip off. Then dip the steak back into the flour mixture.
Check the heat of the oil by sprinkling some flour in it, the flour should sizzle. This means the oil is hot enough. Carefully place one steak at a time into the hot oil. Don’t crowd the pan, if using a large skillet you can do 2 steaks at a time, if using a small skillet only do one.
Cook the steaks in the oil for about 5 minutes. Spoon hot oil over the tops of the steaks while they cook, this helps the batter stay while flipping. You will notice juices coming from the steaks, through the breading on the top, this means they are cooking. Once you see juices, you can flip the steaks over.
Cook the other side of the steaks for another 5 minutes, or until both sides of the steak are golden brown. Remove from the oil and place on the wire rack. Place the baking sheet with the steaks in the oven to keep warm. Continue this until all steaks are cooked.
To prepare the gravy, determine how much grease is left in the pan, we need 1/4 cup. You can always pour the grease into a glass measuring cup to verify that you are using 1/4 cup. Just be sure to use a slotted spoon to scoop out all the bits of steak that came off during the cooking, so this is used in the gravy also.
With 1/4 cup of drippings in the skillet, add the flour, salt and pepper. Whisk this together. And let the flour mixture cook over medium heat for about 4-5 minutes.
Carefully stir in the milk to the flour mixture. Whisk until smooth and no lumps remain.
Let gravy simmer about 5-8 minutes until it thickens.Taste and add more salt or pepper as needed at this point.
Serve steaks warm with gravy over top.
