The Blood of an Oni - Chapter 1
A story about how Onigama and Onigumo met,
(Written from Onigama’s perspective)
I felt my hand against the cave wall, my other hand holding a flame that illuminated my path. I'd been traversing the caverns for so long, I was growing fatigued.
"This has to be it-!" I thought to myself desperately, my mind was growing more frustrated, flicking through thoughts that bothered me.
I gasped slightly, the wall had curved away under my hand, perhaps.. A larger room..? I began to walk forward without the support of the wall, taking every step anxiously. Eventually I raised my hand, letting the flame grow larger. Just then I heard a growling noise, it startled me more than usual. So much so I almost lost my footing on the damp rocks. I paused for a moment but quickly continued, my heart was racing and all I could hear was the pounding in my ears. Wincing, I sent the flame forward, hoping it would light my way.
Suddenly the noise came again, yet louder. Then I saw it, a large monstrous face in the darkness. It hissed at the light then seemed to scream and lurch forwards, I jumped back but it came no closer. All I could see were two yellow eyes and its jagged set of teeth. Anxiously, I moved closer though it kept its eyes on me at all times. I swallowed hard and I heard it begin to growl again.
"Shh... I'm not going to hurt you.." Instead of attacking again, it recoiled back slightly, making a sad noise. Only then I noticed one of its legs that was visible in the light was bound by a thick shackle. It seemed to be enchanted with magic, but extremely old magic. I reached a hand out but it finally snapped at me and I pulled away just in time.
"I want to help you.. Just please, let me get closer.."
"Perhaps it doesn't understand me... If so, it's not who I'm looking for..." I thought to myself, then shook my head. "No harm trying.."
I then reached out again, holding a small flame in one hand, making sure my other was in a gentle posture as not to scare the creature again. As my hand came close to its face the creature leant back slightly - but less than before - I kept going, my pace slower and slower as I went. As I touched the side of its face a chilling sensation struck my entire body, I almost pulled my hand away.
"There.. Just a little more, okay?" I whispered in a soft tone, raising my other hand with the flame so I could properly see its face.
I gasped.. There.. There it was, two large horns.. And the leg I saw.. Yes.. It was of a spider.. I see it now.
"Onigumo.." I fell over the word, tears plummeted down my face, yet the creature looked at me the same way it did before. I gently stroked two fingers down one of the horns, trying to stop myself completely letting my emotions go. I heard it softly growl again but I blanked the sound out.
"Don't worry.. I'll get you out.." I stood up sharply, the creature jolting back as far it could, shocked by my movement. I reached to my side, pulling my sword out of the scabbard. I heard a whine but I kept going. Eyeing up the chains that were bound to the cavern walls, I raised my sword to my face, closing my eyes gently. Without a second thought I swung it down, the sword glowing with blue magic as it severed the chain links. I heard the creature scuttle back, its heavy breathing was apparant now. I moved to the other side, doing the same. I expected the magic that had sealed them to be more potent but it had been about one hundred years - magic evolves and ages.
I gently put the sword away, but when I looked up the spider had run into the darkness,
"Hey-!" My last flame had gone out while I was concentrating on breaking the chains, I stumbled over the rocks with a new one in my hand, "Onigumo-!" I stopped, relief returning to me as I saw them at the end of the cave, curled up by the wall, making distraught sounds and breathing sporadically.
"Onigumo.." I clenched my eyes shut then wiped away the newly forming tears. "Come on, I'm here to save you!" I raised one hand out to it shakily, yet my face couldn't muster a smile. I saw the creature turn slightly, like it recognised my words.
"I-I'll take you home-!" My shoulders were beginning to shake, yet I noticed it react again.. Perhaps 'save'.. 'home'..? Slowly and cautiously, I crouched down on one knee, still holding my hand out. I saw it shakily lift itself onto its legs, it must not have used them properly in so long. One slow step at a time, it came over, averting its eyes, but coming closer.
"G-Gumo.." I whispered, letting my flame settle in the air as I held both hands out. He finally looked at me, his eyes were half open, weak and tired. I quickly leant forwards, grabbing him as he collapsed. I clutched at his body, tears flowing from my eyes. I could feel his heartbeat, it now seemed softer than his breathing was before. My mouth finally curled into a smile as I stroked his head. I didn't want to let go... I didnt want any chance to lose him again.
I kept checking his chest, feeling more and more safe every time I felt his heart beating. Eventually I stood up, laying him gently down on the floor.
"I'm going to have to carry you, okay?" I expected no reply, but heard a soft moan. I smiled, then stopped, thinking of what to do next "You-You're going to have to help a little though..." I saw his eyes open slightly, I was glad he could actually understand me, at the start it was looking like he couldn't.
"All you have to do is climb onto my back, then I'll hold you, do you understand?" I crouched down in front of him, as close as I could and held my arms behind me, ready to grab him. I stayed there a while, I thought he was just taking his time. Just before I was about to tell him again, I heard him slowly get up. It was quite a shock as I felt his legs uncomfortably curl around my body, I winced slightly but then quickly brushed the feeling off.
"Are.. You on?" I felt something bump into the back of my head, I gasped a little at the touch but still smiled, "Good.. You should sleep, okay" I stood up carefully. He was... Extremely light... I breathed in deeply, staring at the only illuminated part of the floor in front of me,
"Okay.. We're almost there, Onigama you can do this.. We're so close.."

The Blood of an Oni - Chapter 3
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
"All done!" Onigumo pushed his bowl towards mine, it was empty with nothing but the chopsticks sitting inside,
"Ah, I'm glad you ate it all.." I smiled, balancing his bowl in mine and placing it on the side in the other room. I heard Onigumo's footsteps behind me as I snuffed out the fire.
"Is there not any more?" I jumped a little, Onigumo had leant his head around me and was right against my arm,
"Ah- n-no, not right now, I don't think it'd be good to eat too much right away..." He frowned, stepping back. "Besides, we need to fix this." I ran my fingers through his hair. Despite how nice it looked, it was extremely damaged and messy to the touch. "Come on." I beconed for Onigumo to follow as I walked through a narrow entranceway to the washroom. It had a large round bath in the corner and a few crates and boxes of medical supplies that were strewn about the floor.
"I-I don't really want a bath.." Onigumo muttered, I turned to him, surprised.
"Why not?" He shifted from foot to foot.
"I.. I don't wanna.." I noticed him fiddling with his clothes, pulling up the trousers and tightening his grip on the kimono top.
"I won't be in here with you if that makes you happier." Onigumo finally looked me in the eyes with a smile.
"Y-Yes please… I trust you but… I-I wanna do it alone…"
"Okay, I'll run the bath, then you can get changed alone. But I want you to leave the clothes outside because I'm going to shorten them so they fit you, okay?"
"Yeah!" Onigumo gave me a wide smile before sitting down on a wicker box. I leant over the bath, turning the taps on. They creaked and moaned for a second before water shot out. Quickly, I pushed the plug into the bottom of the bath, then stood up straight again.
"It only takes a moment, you should feel it so it suits your temperature preferences."
"P-Pref-?" Onigumo looked between me and the bath.
"T-To see if it's warm enough.." I didn't think he'd be stumped by big words...
"Oh, I get it!" He jumped up off the box, leaning over the side of the bath and cautiously waving his hand in it. The level was almost high enough now. "It's nice and warm.. It's my pref-pr um..."
"Don't worry, I understand!" I laughed, turning both taps off and dipping my hand in the water, waving it around to mix the cool and hot parts more evenly. "Remember what I said okay?" I smiled, ruffling Onigumo's hair before walking out.
"Thank you!" I heard him call after a little while.
My eyes travelled around the room, the pan still sat in the fireplace and the dirty bowls lay on the side. We'd have to find a river to wash them in though I remembered one nearby. I sat on a small stool, turning so my back faced where the washroom doorway was. Something was bugging me. The way Onigumo spoke and acted, it was all too similar to a child. Nothing remained from before, including my feelings for him. I held my head in my hands. I felt so strange, having to look after him like a parent.
"I just have to wait a little longer.." I whispered to myself, "You've waited this long, a few days means nothing..." Just then I heard a shuffling noise that broke me from my thoughts, I turned quickly to see Onigumo's clothes in a heap by the doorway. I sighed, laughing to myself a little, I don't know why I expected him to fold them neatly.
Picking them up, I moved to the room where we'd eaten. There was a small shelf against the wall with random baskets and scrolls. I shifted a folded up blanket aside, remembering I'd found some scissors not long ago and left them beneath it.
Carefully, I spread out the kimono, the garment creating a t shape on the table. I'd remembered how large Onigumo was compared to me so I cut it to size. Something inside me felt sad for cutting up the clothes I remembered, and plus, they seemed like the only part of the old Onigumo left now but... I'll get him new clothes once he comes back anyway. I hadn't realised I'd self conciously stopped cutting. I shook my head and continued, throwing the scrap fabric in a pile. The kimono top was still a little wide but now it was shorter, and I'd cut the eco trousers into hakama styled trousers instead.
I scratched the side of my face, I think he'd need some kind of belt since the waistline was still far too wide. I moved back to my room where most of my bags resided and rifled through them, hoping to find some more scrap fabric.
"Ah- what about-!" I suddenly remembered something, pulling out a familiar large orange ribbon. It was from a town I visited once, they had a wonderful array of fabrics and ribbons on sale. Even though it wasn't exactly my thing, I found myself buying something anyway because it reminded me of him. I hadn't noticed my hand had tightly gripped around the orange fabric. Something splashed against my hand, quickly, I felt my face. Tears were rolling down my cheeks.
"Stop it!" I stood up suddenly, shouting at nothing. My heart rate had suddenly risen, "What is wrong with me.. I should be happy..." I held the ribbon to my face, closing my eyes. Just for a second I saw his face: it wasn't childish, or scared, it was confident and fierce, just how I always remembered it.. "Gumo.."
"Onigama!" I suddenly broke out of my daydream, Onigumo called again and I rushed back round to the washroom.
"Is something wrong?!" I called from the doorway, still looking away, "Are you done?" I looked back down at my hands, the ribbon was slightly crumpled from my tight grip.
"A-Almost-!" Quickly, I ran back to the table, folding the clothes and carrying them back under one arm. I placed them down where Onigumo had left them before and sat back on the stool, "Okay, you can get them." I heard him get out of the bath, his footsteps making a wet sound.
"Onigama.. You can look.." I was surprised, but slowly turned around, he'd found one of the towels and had wrapped it around himself.
"Oh- yeah I forgot about that, sorry I should've told you where they were before-"
"Can you help me change.." His voice sounded a little sad. I began forwards but stopped.
"Is something wrong?" He looked away, his lip was quivering slightly.
"You shouted just now, didn't you... I was thinking... Everything you've done..." Why did he sound so much more mature all of a sudden. "I'm not who you wanted me to be, am I..?" He stared right at me, his face stayed emotionless yet floods of tears fell from his eyes.
"O-Onigumo-!" I reached out but recoiled, my words only came out as a stutter. "I-I.." I fell to the floor, my whole body shaking. "I'm sorry, I'm sorry.." I grabbed my chest, gripping onto my top. "I.. I just.. I've been looking for him for so long and- you-" I looked up, he'd stopped crying but his expression was the same. I just didn't understand why he looked like this, my Onigumo was so large, strong and confident, why had that all disappeared?
"You.. No-!" I stood up without a second thought, placing my hands on Onigumo's shoulders, "You're exactly who I was looking for-! You're Onigumo! There's no question about it, it's just going to take a while a-and that's okay!" I nodded harshly, smiling as best I could. Onigumo kept staring at me, then slowly, he smiled too and looked away.
"Okay.. I'm sorry... I'll try harder to remember..." He nodded again, wiping his face,
"We'll get you cleaned up, okay!" He didn't respond but I took his hand, sitting him down on the stool. I noticed he kept looking away as I rubbed the towel.
"Tell you what, I'll get you something to look at while I cut your hair, okay?" He nodded silently, "Can I.. See something to do with Onigumo?" I paused.
"O-Of course!" I looked at our things plenty just to remember what he looked like. Sometimes I felt like he wasn’t even real anymore but seeing his writing and drawings reminded me to not lose hope.
"What about these?" I came back in, it seemed like Onigumo hadn't moved. I put a box on his lap, untying the ribbon. He slowly held it in his hands.
"How short do you want your hair?"
"I want it like Onigumo's."
I'd begun running my fingers through his hair but stopped as he spoke, his words unnerved me but I stayed silent. I picked up the scissors I had used to cut the fabric as well as the kitchen knife from the wall. Kneeling down, I looked at the trail of hair in front of me,
"Perhaps... I'll find a brush.. I think we have one." I stood up again, leaving the room. I could see Onigumo out of the corner of my eye, he must've not thought I could see him as he'd started looking through the contents of the box. I hadn't checked it so I hoped it was all appropriate.
"Aha! There!" I picked up a small comb and brush from one of my bags and returned to the kitchen. "I found one of each!" I held them up to Onigumo but he just nodded, seemingly uninterested.
The rest of the day was silent, I'd cut Onigumo's hair then decided to leave to house for supplies. I left Onigumo alone with food for lunch and dinner but kept the seal on the house, making sure it was stronger this time. The way he'd acted struck fear in me. But perhaps it was for the best however...
The sky was now a solid black, clouds covered the stars and the wind blew slightly through the trees. I gently opened the screen door as to not make too much of a noise. I peered into Onigumo's room, feeling relieved as I saw him asleep under his sheet. Numerous pieces of paper and books were strewn around him, but I decided to leave them untouched. I almost fell down as I entered my room, my bag was quite full of supplies I'd bought and scavenged from a town a little way away. I untied my hair and threw off my top, laying down with a sigh. I'd waited so long for Onigumo to return but now… I wasn’t really sure if that was what I wanted at all.

The Blood of an Oni - Chapter 4
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 3
"Onigama-! Onigama-!"
"Ah.. That voice.. It's so familiar.." I clutched at the sheets, smiling at the thought.
"Onigama, what the hell are you doing, get up!" I sat up quickly, rubbing my eyes, my surroundings were different. The room was empty and the house was pristine.
"What the fuck, stop ignoring me!" I turned quickly, someone was standing in the doorway. I gasped, standing up suddenly.
"Onigumo-!" It was him. Tall, muscular, and with a fierce scowl. "You-You're-!"
"Yeah, what about it? You need to get up, I want to go out." His face was sharp and his eyes narrow, deep red hair with streaks of yellow fell down the sides of his head, the rest tied into a high ponytail. He wore a black kataginu and clothes similar to the small Onigumo I’d seen not long ago.
I couldn't believe it... Something must've finally changed. I quickly put my kimono top on but left my hair down and ran after him. To my surprise as I came outside everything was different... Before me were rolling hills with multicoloured flowers between the long grass, there were trees off in the distance and I could hear a river nearby.
"Gama-!" Onigumo glared at me, his arms crossed.
"G-Gama.." I smiled at the name, repeating it under my breath.
"S-Stop daydreaming!" He snapped, grabbing my wrist, "I wanted to go to that lake today and we're going, you hear me?!"
"Of course!" I smiled, his voice comforted me.
We walked through the fields, I wanted to stop and take it all in but Onigumo was pulling me along. I liked this, he was taller than me, stronger than me. I didn't have to protect him, he protected me.
It wasn't long before the lake came into view, it was surrounded by coloured flowers and the bright blue sky reflected beautifully in the water. Onigumo let go of my hand, running down the slope. I stayed there, taking it all in.
"What's wrong with you today?!" Onigumo's shout broke my fantasy. I hadn't noticed he'd clambered back up, scowling at me again. "Don't ruin today, you hear me?!"
"Don't you want to savor the view?" I smiled, gesturing at the scenery,
"I can take it in later!" He sighed, then without warning he reached behind me, lifting me into his arms. I quickly wrapped my arms around him, feeling my cheeks flush momentarily.
"I should've done this before, you're being a prissy dreamer today. I wanna do what I want, not sightsee." He ran back down the slope and through the flowers, I still gazed at them in awe, even if we did move by a little quickly.
Eventually he stopped, putting me down,
"What did you want to do then?" I turned to him, smiling, but he looked away quickly.
"I'm not gonna tell you if you're gonna forget." Onigumo knelt down and began shifting aside the long grass. I felt a little confused but just sat by myself, looking over the lake. It felt like a long time, the few clouds drifted by and I could hear Onigumo moving about in the grass behind me.
"Okay, fine! I guess you did totally forget! I want a rabbit!" Onigumo called from behind me. I turned to him, a little shocked, he was a little way away now, "So come fucking help me, cause we're not leaving till I get one!"
"What, for a pet?"
"Of course for a pet you idiot!" I laughed, walking over, "I already checked there, go somewhere else-!"
"Okay, okay!" I walked a little further away, shifting the grass aside with my foot as I went. I had no idea where rabbits lived and didn't know if Onigumo knew either but I was more than happy to help.
More clouds were drifting by now and the breeze had picked up slightly, I turned to call for Onigumo but he was already walking over,
"Any luck?"
"What do you fucking think, is there a bunny in my arms?" I laughed, standing up. Onigumo smirked, putting his hands on his hips.
"I guess you'll have to do for now.."
"W-What do you mean?" He walked behind me, slowly wrapping his arms around my waist,
"You'll still be my pet before I get a bunny.." I felt my face flush a bright red as he rested his head on my shoulder, his grip getting tighter. "I'm so happy you're mine, Gama.. You weren't happy with that army anyway, were you?"
"Army..?" I muttered, glancing at him in the corner of my eye.
"Geez, you get up wrong today or something? You've forgotten everything!" Onigumo let go, walking around so he was right in front of me, "Don't you remember when we first met.." He lowered his head, grinning widely, I began to step back but he grabbed me by the wrist again, "I couldn't resist, you were just so cute - even smaller back then too. So I kidnapped you! Now our armies are one, win-win I think!"
"W-What?! I don't remember-!" Onigumo suddenly pulled me close, pressing two fingers to my mouth,
"You don't need to remember, 'cause we're together now, and that's all I need to be happy..."
"You're happy too, right?"
"Right?"
"Onigama?!"
I opened my eyes suddenly.
"O-Onigama-!" I looked towards the voice slowly, Onigumo was leaning over me, his face in deep worry. "Are you okay? I heard you talking so I came in and you're-" It was small Onigumo. "You were crying..." He muttered, looking away nervously. I lifted my hand to my face, he was right, it was damp as well as hot.
"Did you.. Have a nightmare?" Onigumo looked back at me, I hadn't realised he was clutching my other hand.
"N-no.. I'm sorry I scared you.." I sat up, rubbing the back of my neck, Onigumo still stayed close, he seemed worried.
"Can I get you something, you could have a bath… O-Or I could try make something... " I looked down at him, "Ah-sorry.. You probably want to be left alone..."
"No, I-I actually had an idea of what we can do today." Onigumo looked a little surprised, "I hope it'll go well... But... It's a treat, just for you." He leant back in shock,
"W-what do you mean?"
"I remembered this place I used to go to... I think you'll like it." I turned to him, smiling. Without warning Onigumo jumped into me, hugging me tightly. I almost fell back, but put an arm out behind me just in time. He buried his face in my chest, I could feel the damp of his tears.
"Thank you-!"
"Onigumo, why are you crying?" I lifted his head up slightly and he wiped his face with the sleeve of his kimono, "I-I had a nightmare.. Where you left me... And never came back... S-So thank you for being so nice to me now!" He leant on my chest again, crying harder, I stroked his hair, remembering my own dream.
"It was just a dream Onigumo... It's not real... "

The Blood of an Oni - Chapter 2
Chapter 1
The rain hammered down against my face, it was evening before I entered the cave and now the sun had completely set. My legs shook with every step but the weight on my back gave me the motivation to keep going. I was so close.
The grass was wet underfoot, yet I could recognise the small dirt path. With nothing to do on the journey here, I'd made sure I'd memorised the area as best I could.
It seemed like ages before I saw it, through the gaps in the trees a small house came into view, the sight causing my whole body to relax in relief. I kept all my belongings in any abandoned building I could find when travelling, and just in case, I sealed them so no human could enter even if it actually was their house.
My pace was filled with anticipation as we got closer and closer. I stopped outside, turning slightly, I could see Onigumo's head resting on my shoulder, he was making quiet noises as he snored. For a second I thought of telling him we'd arrived but... He needed the rest.
I slid open the screen door, sighing in relief as I was out of the wet. No matter how much my back ached, I kept on throughout the house until I got to a small room with a sheet and pillow layed out in the middle.
Finally I gently dropped Onigumo behind me, it shook the room slightly as he hit the floor though thankfully he didn't wake up. I rolled him on his side, then picked up the sheet and draped it over him as best as I could. It was far too small for him but it was all I had. I frowned, resting the pillow under his head.
"Sorry, Gumo, I don't have any bigger ones.." I laughed softly, then my smile faded as I looked at him.
"I could've sworn you were bigger.. And heavier.." I turned to the side, looking at the quiet room. I'd left all the doors open and I could see the rain from the entrance. "What am I saying..?" I walked over then knelt down. It reassured me to see him snoring softly instead of making the pained noises from before.
Smiling, I leant towards his face, kissing the side of his head. I pulled away slowly, somehow.. It gave me a sorrowful feeling... I closed my eyes as I stood up.
"Sleep well, Gumo." I muttered as I walked out, gently pulling the screen door closed.
I awoke with a start, pushing the sheet back without thinking. I turned, noticing the screen door was wide open, I must've not closed it the night before.. I held my head in my hands, only just then realising how hot my body was. My dreams had been more troubling than usual recently so I never had a peaceful night.
I sighed, looking up at the ceiling. I felt so drowsy and my body was aching all over. My eyes widened as I remembered what had happened last night.
"Onigumo-!" How could I have forgotten yesterday?! I ran out the room, then slowed my pace, just in case Onigumo was awake.. I didn't want to seem too eager. I came to the door of his room, breathing in deeply as I placed my hand on it. I couldn't find it in myself to open it straight away. Why was I so anxious..? I closed my eyes quickly, shaking my head.
"O-Onigumo?" I began to walk in but stopped as I saw both him and the blanket gone. I anxiously looked around the room, my mind relaxing as I saw him sitting by the open screen doors.
"Onigumo.." I walked over to him slowly, I was relieved to see him but something was off.
"M-Me?" I heard a quiet voice as he turned and my heart stopped. Slowly, he stood himself up, seeming to struggle a little bit. He had the blanket draped over his shoulders.
"Onigumo..? It- No, you're not.." I felt my eye twitching and my shoulders were tensing up. He was almost unreconisable, his whole stature was so much smaller - like a child, yet everything he wore was the same. He was wearing a grey kimono top, its sleeves were ripped and they went far over his hands. He also seemed to be holding up his trousers with one arm, they too were much too large as well. Sad yellow eyes looked right at me, they were wide and full of fear, and his bright red hair and almost came down to his ankles.
"Who are you?!" I stepped back, my hands clenched into fists, "Tell me!" He lifted his free hand to his face defensively, his cheeks turning slightly red,
"I-I don't know!" His voice wavered, I could tell he was going to cry,
"Are you Onigumo?! D-Don't you remember me?! Onigama!" I shouted at him, stepping forwards again and baring my teeth. He winced, gripping at his sleeves,
"I-I don't know! I-!" Suddenly, he fell to the floor, crying loudly with his face in his hands. I gasped, only just realising what I'd done.
I ran over to him, falling down by his side, he didn't seem to move at all when I came close.
"O-Onigumo-! I'm so sorry, I don't know what came over me!" I reached out, expecting him to shout at me and push me away, but without warning he wrapped his arms around my waist, burying his head into my chest.
"I'm sorry!" He wailed. I tried to speak but words evaded me, I just opened and closed my mouth helplessly. Defeated, I closed my eyes and held him too.
"Please don't be... I shouldn't have expected you to remember." He then pulled away, looking right at me, his teary eyes making me feel worse about shouting just a moment ago.
"R-Remember w-what?"
"You.." I looked away slowly, "You.. You used to be my companion. A long, long time ago..." Looking back, I hoped something would click but his face stayed the same.
"So.. I'll remember soon?" He rubbed one eye gently, I noticed he still had the shackles around his wrists. I nodded, smiling,
"Yes! And you'll look the same too! I think you just need rest and food!" Onigumo blinked a few times, looking down and moving his hand away from his face. He then smiled gently, then looked back at me.
"Y-Yeah!" His smile widened so I could see his teeth. I couldn't help but grin back at him. However, I hadn't realised it but my hands were shaking. I let go of Onigumo slowly, hoping he hadn't noticed either.
"Onigumo.. I missed you so much.." I whispered though I couldn’t meet his eyes.
I'd left Onigumo to lie down again and moved into the kitchen to prepare a meal. Even though it should be breakfast, I wanted something bigger for Onigumo.
A large pan sat on a metal stand over the fire, I checked it every so often as I rifled through the food I had on hand. Thankfully, I'd visited a local human town recently in disguise and bought quite a lot of food, perhaps something inside me knew I was going to see Onigumo soon after that trip.
I pulled three eggs out of a basket and picked up a small cut of meat. Cracking the egg shells on the side of the pan, I threw them in and they sizzled in the heat. I put the meat down next to them, my hand rested against the pan but the heat didn't bother me.
I'd always made sure to have multiple plates and bowls just for this occasion. I opened a wicker box beside the fireplace, taking out a set of rather nicely kept shallow bowls and chopsticks. There was a low, wooden table in the centre of the next room. I positioned the bowls and chopsticks neatly in two places opposite each other. The set even came with little stands to lean the chopsticks on. The arrangement was quite charming.
"It smells tasty.." I turned quickly, only just remembering my company - honestly, I'd just layed a table for two, how could I have forgotten? - Onigumo was peering around the screen door.
"Ah-thank you! I hope it's good enough for you!" I noticed him looking at the table, he seemed a little nervous to come in.
"Sit wherever you want!" I smiled at him before turning back to the pan. He walked over to the place furthest away, kneeling down slowly. He seemed to still be having trouble with his clothes.
"That'll take just a little longer" I glanced at the bowl but continued on to join Onigumo.
"Um.. I'm sorry.. I don't r-remember your name.." Onigumo turned away as I knelt next to him. His words made me stutter for a second but I regained my composure quickly,
"You're Onigumo, right? And I'm Onigama! It shouldn't be easy to forget!" He kept looking away even when I tried to smile at him. I looked down at his kimono, he'd rolled the sleeves back slightly.
"Oh, we have the time.. I'll get rid of them." I reached for his wrists where the shackles were but he jolted his hands away before I touched them,
"N-No- It.. It really hurts.." His face was fearful. I sighed, imagining how he felt,
"The pain wont go unless I get rid of them." I frowned slightly, reaching towards him again. Onigumo winced, then clenched his eyes shut, holding out his wrists towards me without another word. I closed my eyes, placing my hands above and under the shackles as gently as I could so not to rub them against Onigumo's skin any more. Like the chains, they took minimal effort to destroy.
I heard a smashing sound and Onigumo yelped slightly. When I opened my eyes they were completely gone. Onigumo was looking away again, rubbing around his wrists,
"Th-Thank you, Onigama.."
“It’s okay… “ I smiled at him then stood, shifting the debris aside with my foot. I then moved back over to the kitchen. "Ah- We're all done!"
"Here." I tipped the contents of the plate back into his bowl and finally sat down in my spot. "A-Ah Onigumo!" As I looked back up at Onigumo as he was picking the meat up in his hands, he looked confused.
"W-what?" He put it down again and I sighed, walking over and abandoning my meal once again.
"Use your chopsticks, your hands are probably still dirty.." I handed the ornate chopsticks towards him but he looked confused. I sighed again, placing them properly in his hands, my stomach was growling slightly - it was just as agitated as I was..
"What is this?" He almost dropped them straight away, I only just stopped myself from burying my head in my hands from frustration. I moved round to his other side, adjusting his grip on them again, this time not letting go. I opened the chopsticks in his hand, picking up a smaller piece of meat.
"Do you understand?" Without replying, Onigumo put it in his mouth,
"Ah- So good!" He reached for another but dropped the chopsticks, I picked them up straight away, putting them in his hands again. This time, he seemed to form his fingers around them more naturally. "I think I've got it.." He muttered, picking up a piece of meat more quickly this time.
"Hey, you do!" I'd noticed he'd picked it up remarkably, it must be a sign of him returning to how he used to be... "Can you do it alone?" Onigumo nodded enthusiastically and I returned to my seat, finally able to enjoy my meal in peace.
