I talked about the problem of Windows system requirements being too damn high before, and how the windows 10 to 11 jump is especially bad. Like the end of Windows 10 is coming october 2025, and it will be a massive problem. And this article gives us some concrete numbers for how many computers that can't update from win10 to 11.
And it's 240 million. damn. “If these were all folded laptops, stacked one on top of another, they would make a pile 600 km taller than the moon.” the tech analysis company quoted in the article explains.
So many functioning computers that will be wasted. And it's all because people don't wanna switch to a Linux distro with sane system requirements and instead buy a new computer.
Like if you own one of these 240 million windows 10 computers, Just be an environmentally responsible non-wasteful person and switch that computer to Linux instead of just scrapping it because Microsoft says it's not good enough.
Edit: as have been pointed out multiple times in the replies. It's really not "all because people don't wanna switch to a linux distro." It's really Microsoft's fault for this form of planned obsolescence.
My original post was lacking in perspective at best. And of course, people who use computers for work are often made reliant on Windows by their job and employers and can't switch. Or lack time, resources, and information to make the switch. Which is also due to systemic issues, such as lack of education, and the culture of obfuscation about tech that tech companies create.
Edit 2: Making this unrebloggable: now I really know what reddit mods mean when they say "the discussion has run its course" Like there is absolutely no conversation anymore, just repeating of points already made and responded to, just endless repetition
To quote @mlembug
Source
If you can spend 5-10 minutes writing a reblog clowning on somebody, but you can't:
spend 10s to do a basic courtesy of checking the appropriate pronoun of the person involved
spend 30s checking the reblogs of a post to see if someone also decided to clown on the same person
spend 10s to click on OP's post to see if it was edited in the meantime (and guess what: the edits in OP's post does indeed blame Microsoft for planned obsolescence, which you decided to blame her for not doing in one of your reblogs)
THEN YOU SHOULD NOT BE MAKING A REBLOG. EVER.

so this post has been made unrebloggable now (shocker) but ive been feeling the need to address it since i saw it on my dash multiple times, so let's explore how lying on the internet works. more specifically, how blending truth, lies, and omissions to whip uninvolved people into anger works, because i think this is an excellent example and that pointing out the misinformation and the tactics used to spread it here is important, both in correcting the specific falsities but also in helping recognize similar tactics in the future.
Tumblr media
so here we have several things that are technically true: staff has been very openly shitty to trans women for a long time and them banning predstrogen is clearly part of that, there is currently a movement regarding discussing transmisandry/transandrophobia, transmisogyny and transphobes sending transphobic asks is by far nothing new, and baeddel is/was a slur. however, among all of this are half-truths, unprovable speculation, or outright lies made to make you believe these events are originating specifically from transmascs.
firstly, the transandrophobia movement has been drastically misrepresented here in the same way it has been for the whole argument, "they're just trans MRAs" has been repeated so many times now that i'm gonna be hearing it in my dreams when i'm 80. i can understand not being willing to address the nuance of that whole discourse in one post that isn't directly focused on that, i'm certainly not, but in this example it's not unwillingness to address a complicated topic, it's a deliberate misrepresentation to frame one side of the discussion as The Evil Bad Ones That Can't Be Trusted. additionally, this post IS about that discourse and is just pretending it isn't to mislead a wider audience, so refusing to address it at all beyond this brief mention is deliberately misleading people about the goals of the group because They're The Other Side Of The Discourse. "transmisogynists" is used as a buzzword here, it doesn't actually refer to Anyone Who Hates Transfemmes, it refers to Transmascs Who Discuss Transmasc-Specific Oppression Using A Word They Coined To Point Out That Queer Spaces Have A Big Problem With Masculinity and just. doesn't tell you that's what it means, relying on the structure and framing of the post to create the Transmisogynist = Transmasc association in the audience's head so op doesn't have to say it outright (and of course the implied Transmasc = Transmisogynist association that follows because creating THAT association is the Actual Point of this post). the mentions of transmascs in this post are designed to look like afterthoughts, op says "typically those who espouse transandrophobia" to make it look like they're saying there's other people they're referring to here too, but almost everything in this post draws from the transandrophobia discourse. some random cis transphobe in texas has never heard the term baeddel in their entire life much less used it in a debate about transphobia, this is an intercommunity argument through and through, but op is trying to mask the fact that they're just referring to "transmascs who disagree with me specifically" and make it look like it's part of a wider trend. and again, i'm not going to go into the nuances of transandrophobia here, but i highly recommend reading some of the theory on it by @nothorses (x) and @genderkoolaid (x) because the "theyre just trans MRAs" argument kinda just collapses under its own weight as soon as you look into it even a smidgen. i've linked a couple broad overviews there but they both discuss it frequently and in-depth, specifically nothorses has a pinned post linking to many different discussion threads that i would recommend checking out if you do want to learn more about what the actual conversation surrounding these words is.
so, after framing the movement this way, they go on to say that the reason predstrogen was banned wasn't /just/ because staff has a long and established hate boner for trans women, but because the transandrophobia movement was teaming up with TERFs to mass-report her and other transfemmes, and implies that this is part of a deliberate conspiracy between Transandrophobia Truthers™, TERFs, and staff. you'll notice that there are no, say, screenshots of transmascs saying theyre deliberately reporting her or of that they're working with TERFs, behind-the-scenes lists of people who reported a certain account, or any evidence for this beyond "she was a trans woman, they're trans men who hate trans women, she got banned, so these must be related". which i find especially funny now given that photomatt has continued melting down about this since it happened and made it pretty clear it yknow. was just part of staffs ongoing hate campaign against trans women that has been going on much longer than the transandrophobia debate? and that maybe the fact that The Literal CEO is having a personal meltdown about this might explain where that could be coming from or at least why it's been allowed to continue for so long, moreso than any individual users reporting someone could? but i digress.
who reported what account is completely unprovable as a casual user unless people directly admit they did it, so to bring it up like this begs the question of what actual reasoning they have for saying it beyond trying to tie a current display of bigotry into an unrelated discourse. that's not to say it's impossible people who discuss transandrophobia were wrongfully reporting her, because again, thats something we have no way of knowing, and the internet is a shit place so i wouldn't be surprised. but given the circumstances and the rest of the lies here, i have my doubts about this being an actual yknow. Thing That Happened rather than just another lie to make people mad at transmascs. now one could make the argument that op wasn't saying transmascs are /deliberately/ teaming up with TERFs/staff, that "teaming up" was just a poor choice of words to refer to multiple groups who happen to have the same goals in mind at the same time but aren't actually coordinating with one another, but given the deliberate misinformative slant of the rest of the post and the overall phrasing in this section, i have trouble extending that grace. regardless, however, that doesn't change that who is reporting who isn't something verifiable, so stating it here as a confirmed fact is disingenuous at the absolute best, and a lie chosen specifically because it's unprovable at worst. if op /does/ have proof that transmascs have been teaming up with TERFs to get trans women banned, not including that with this post is just uhhhhh dumb, and if op /doesn't/ have proof then Why Would You Go Around Telling People That's What Happened Unless You Were Lying To Them On Purpose With Ulterior Motives.
next, op goes on to discuss the rise of the term baeddel. now as i said before, the truth here is that it certainly was a slur and certainly can still be used as one, again the internet is a shit place so i would be a fool if i tried to say "no one is using this as a slur". however, this is once again a drastic misrepresentation of the situation. baeddel's rising use is due to certain trans women reclaiming it and aligning themselves with the original group's politics, namely that femininity is good and masculinity is bad (aka terfism 101), with the added caveat that by abandoning femininity for masculinity, transmascs are evil and betraying devine womanhood and their community by putting more Evil Manhood into the world. of course that in turn is a drastic oversimplification of their politics and i highly recommend checking out this post with an actual in-depth exploration of the history (and without my added flavor), but the important part to note here is that this is not a term transmascs just Started Using one day because they hate transfems so very much as is implied here, its use is directly tied to a group of people saying "hello, here is what i am, and here is what this word means about what i believe," so others went "ok, these specific beliefs are called this." bringing up the fact that it historically was a slur is misdirection here, when you look closer this is almost a 1 to 1 translation of TERFs crying that TERF and radfem are slurs because People Don't Like Their Politics And Therefore Them, so the name for their politics is used negatively, so therefore it's a slur. that argument just has a little more oomph behind it this time because It Was A Slur Originally. and again, that isnt to say no one is now using it as a slur, the rate of decay for online discourse is ridiculous so it being boiled down to and used as "evil transfemme" has certainly already happened, but to act like /every/ use of it is a slur is literally just a lie, when you self-identify with a term based on your shared politics with the original group then you do not get to claim everyone using that term to describe those politics is doing so exclusively to attack you. also this part is entirely speculation but given that op's url is basically just. baeddel switched around to dae bel, i would hazard a guess that they perhaps are indeed aware of the origins of its re-use? but again, that's entirely unprovable and based just on wordplay, but like. given the Everything here i wouldn't be surprised. now, there's definitely an argument to be made about calling users baeddels based just off of their politics when they don't personally self-identify with it, if that constitutes calling someone a slur and if TIRF should be used instead, but crucially, that is not the argument being made here. the argument being made is "ANY AND ALL use of this term is calling someone a slur," and that literally just Isn't The Case.
finally, to tie the whole post off, op reminds us 1) if you hear anything bad about any trans woman ever, it's probably a lie to make her look bad, and 2) if you hear anyone say anything about transandrophobia, disregard everything else they have to say because they hate trans women. not "be critical of the things you see or get sent" or "be on the lookout for things following a certain pattern," a unilateral "anything bad is probably fake and anyone who uses the bad words is probably evil." that is not something someone does if they are genuinely trying to raise awareness of an ongoing trend, that is what someone does when they want you to turn your brain off and be mad at a group no matter what they say.
so yeah, in summary, do be critical of the things you see and be on the lookout for certain patterns, because sometimes people will just Lie to you. or, sometimes people will tell you portions of the truth while leaving out crucial bits so that you'll come to the conclusion they want without anyone being able to say they lied to you without typing up a thirty paragraph long hell post. transmisogyny is absolutely a problem on this site and there are 100% valuable conversations to be had about it and its presence within the trans community, but this post is not that. this post uses real transmisogyny and the wrongful termination of a trans woman's account as set dressing to say that it was all because of evil transmascs who run the trans community behind the scenes conspiring to take out transfemmes, so you should ignore anything they have to say because All of it is secretly motivated by transmisogyny. they're never discussing transandrophobia because it's something that actually effects them, they're doing it to hurt trans women by saying they have it worse. they're never telling you about shitty things a trans woman did to spread awareness, they're lying to make her look bad, or even if it's true they're only talking about it as part of a hate campaign because she's trans, they wouldn't care otherwise. they're never using a specific term because People Use That Term For Themselves, they're calling someone a slur because they hate trans women. there's always an explanation you can think up that ties it back to transmisogyny, and op says that instead of assessing all of what someone says and the context behind it to determine if that's what's happening, you should assume transmisogyny is the answer and refuse to engage any further as soon as you see a word you've been told is bad.
this post is discourse recruitment masquerading as a public service announcement that doesn't offer you any routes to actually learn more about what's going on, it just tells you Here's What's Happening, Here's Who's Evil And Should Be Ignored, And If You Disagree You're Also Evil And Should Be Ignored. content of the actual post aside, i think anything framed that way should be taken with a MASSIVE grain of salt and this would have raised my alarm bells even if i wasn't already pretty familiar with the arguments, people who genuinely want you to know something just because it's good to know will give you options to learn more or encourage you to actually use your critical thinking to assess things, not tell you to sit down and shut up and ignore anyone who disagrees with them.
anyways i guess tldr

(hey, what fruit post?)
OK so. Important information in order to provide context: I’m Brazilian, born, raised and currently living in Brazil. With that in mind…
In 2019, I saw a post where OP was talking about picking berries as a kid and it got me thinking about the fruit *I* picked as a kid myself. So I made a random post about them that originally looked like this:
Tumblr media
Now, both this fruit and this tree have their own names in Portuguese: pitanga and jabuticabeira. But I thought that, since English is the lingua franca of this website and all, maybe it would be easier for people to know what I was talking about if I used the English names for these plants. So I looked it up and got the names Brazilian (or Surinam) cherries and Brazilian grapetree. And I used them.
Turns out, these fruit aren’t, indeed, that well-known outside of Brazil and the post breached containment, so to speak. And it reached people that didn’t know that was how they were called in English and didn’t care to look it up. To them, I was someone spouting fake information online, and you know how people react to THAT. So people started calling me:
 • Stupid for thinking those fruits are actual cherries and grapes (not what I said)
 • Stupid for not knowing grapes don’t grow on trees (not what I said)
 • A stupid gringo for making up names for things that already had names in Portuguese (not what I am and not what I did)
 • A few other assorted insults such as an “European colonizer” (not what I am) and having my country called a “banana republic” (not what it is but even if it was, WHOSE fault would that be, huh?)
And this has been going on for FIVE YEARS. I’ve changed the original text to disclaimers that I DO know that’s not what they’re called in Portuguese and I DO know they’re not actual cherries and grapes to try and keep people from calling me stupid over this fucking post several times but they just don’t ever check if someone has already “corrected” me. Lately, I thought people had finally gotten over it but it picked up pace AGAIN today and people are already going “Uhhh but these aren’t grapes???” and I know it’s just a matter of time until the insults start again and I’m sick of it so now that Tumblr allows us to make posts unrebloggable I’m taking the fruit out back and shooting them all like Old Yeller.

I'm probably gonna regret attaching my name to this but I slept on it and I'm still really upset but now more coherent (so please delete this if it's unwelcome).
First of all I'm really sorry you're dealing w this shit. I hope you're taking care of yourself rn.
Second of all.... holy fuck Inneskeeper has handled this horribly. I'm trying to extend the benefit of the doubt and say he just needs time, we all do, but it's very hard when he's been acting as though a day is enough time for everyone to get over the fear he spread.
It's really upsetting to see him bring up both his schizophrenia and his career as reasons why he was upset without ever actually uttering the words "I'm sorry, I was wrong." without needing to read between the lines.
It's a really concerning trend I've noticed reappearing now that actual celebrities and just plain old popular users are becoming more open with their mental health, that "I was having a psychotic break/I was having a manic episode/I was blah-de-blah" somehow taking the place of an actual apology. As if explaining it means you no longer have to take action or responsibility.
Especially given he was bringing up his profession during all this. As a professional especially he has a responsibility. I know "this is tumblr" but this is TUMBLR. People don't fact-check. You have sway. Especially as a professional.
He could've made the post unrebloggable, but if he did I haven't seen it. He could've pinned a post that actually contained information/a retraction/a quick apology and explanation, instead we got "I'm taking a break". He edited the post, but given part of his defense was that reblog chains are uncontrollable an edit you would not see unless you clicked back to his blog is...
I'm really hoping that once he comes back he'll say something. Because I know parasocial relationship and all that but I really did respect him, as someone transgender and with some of my specific mental illnesses in a field I'm deeply interested in.
But now I'm just... tired. He spread that same cycle of panic and delusion to everyone who read that post. Here I was thinking that I just got my dog back from the vet and now she and everyone else I love was going to die, that the apocalypse was coming.
Until I did the googling he as an actual ecologist did not do. As if me taking a tumblr post and freaking is less acceptable than him taking a twitter post and freaking.
I don't want to cancel him or bully him. I don't doubt that he's gotten some ableist nonsense, because the internet sucks. But he really hurt a lot of people and did a lot of damage. All I want is him to plainly say "I'm sorry, I did it because [x/y/z] but it was still wrong and I hurt people. Here is some actual information. I'm going to log off." Without a billion asterisks.
And honestly maybe apologize for siccing people on you but frankly given how hard my opinion of him has tanked I'm not gonna hold my breath.
I'm fine. The block button is a wonderful thing.
My feelings are mixed. Yes, I see that it would be terrifying to have your mental illness warp your perception of an event, but...you're not the only mentally ill person on Earth, and it's no less terrifying to be triggered into an episode by false information.
I have been asked by several followers to trigger tag #unreality because that kind of thing really messes with them. And the post was framed in a particularly triggering way—encouraging conspiratorial thinking by saying that there's a "media blackout" and that the official sources are downplaying the severity.
The post is still circulating as of this morning, and the misleading version is still hitting people's dashes and suckering people in. Why would you not just make it unrebloggable?
I don't know. I really don't know what to think of the whole thing.
The Twitter OP makes me honestly furious, claiming that "the cops" "blew it up" when it was first responders putting their lives in danger to stop the burning train cars from exploding. It's so frustrating to see people acting like they're calling it a "controlled burn" to cover up idiotic mismanagement. The crews that responded to this accident at great potential risk to their lives don't deserve to be called cops and slandered for making the best decision they could have possibly made.
In general it's worrying how folks on social media are responding—by encouraging paranoia and mistrust by attributing malice or idiocy to the people trying to manage the accident.
Folks say "fuck cops" but they can't distinguish cops from firefighters and hazardous materials crews working to save lives. That's scary to me.
I don't think we know enough yet to ascertain the causes of the accident, but I want to caution against looking for a specific party to blame as being at fault, because...these things can happen even when we do everything right. As long as we use these hazardous chemicals to make things, this is always a possibility.
And it's not necessarily a "preventable" failure of society that we make and use PVC, either. One of the causes of how widespread plastics are is that they are genuinely useful materials with properties that no other materials have. PVC pipe is what probably makes the plumbing in your house. Before PVC, there was copper, which is incredibly expensive, has a tendency to burst with temperature changes, and corrodes and reacts with various chemicals.
And the sad fact is, environmental disasters like this happen a lot. Many of them worse than this.
Not too far from where I live, there was a case where tons of radioactive waste were dumped into a municipal landfill. This radioactive waste was being handled by workers who didn't know what it was and had no protection. This was a case of malicious dodging of regulations. Mining coal creates radioactive and toxic waste that is constantly mismanaged. I was doing reports on local environmental news for my geology class a while back and many of the coal mines in Eastern Kentucky have a hundredfold violations of environmental and safety regulations, and companies usually dodge responsibility.
I hope this incident inspires people to think and talk about environmental regulations and rights of workers in the rail industry. What with the railroad strikes going on, I think it's worth considering that this is why we need to look out for the welfare of rail workers—you want the people handling the shipment of hazardous chemicals to be well rested and well protected.

People are being forced to censor things like death and sex because of platforms that defund those topics not because they aren't mature
This is why one shouldn't screenshot posts the op made unrebloggable and keep reblogging them. Because then people bring me into it again.
Anon, I am not mad at you. You have the right to respond to a point I made in a public forum. But I turned off notes on that post and tried to shut it down because I was overwhelmed and upset by the number of people making bad faith assumptions about me, from the idea that I'm somehow entirely ignorant of how internet spaces work (even though it's impossible to avoid learning about the culture of tiktok censorship) to the idea that I'm malicious and terrible at my job and making my students miserable. (It's amazing what trauma people will project onto a random teacher on tumblr, I've learned.) None of this is your fault, anon, nor do you have any way of knowing.
I try to always have anon on and my askbox open so I can respond to any message kindly, thoughtfully, and in good faith. Right now, unfortunately, I'm not able to do that. I'm still a little too frustrated by the whole situation to respond to you in the way that I want to be able to.
Please come back if you have a question, and I'll try my best to answer, but in the meantime I invite you to consider what it would mean if I already know this information, and still made the comment I did. What happens if you assume that I am informed, competent, and care deeply about the subject at hand, even if I was cavalier in a personal post that I didn't expect to spread so far? How would that assumption change your reading of the post? How would that assumption change the conversation that you and I can have?

Oh hey the legacy post editor is finally gone for everyone by now, right? Anyway, so the way I made this post that's pinned on my main blog which is:
A "no note" post
Has an invisible OP
Unrebloggable
is that I exploited a glitch I discovered in the post editor that lets you "swap" which editor a post was made with when you edit it, so long as the post is blank. The first two glitches were only possible to do together in the old legacy editor with some clever html nonsense and an reblog of an existing no note post, while the third has only been possible in the new editor. Additionally, in order to make the post unrebloggable, I also needed Tumblr to think I was the OP, which required another glitch in the legacy editor that lets you remove an entire reblog chain if the original post was a no note post.
If you're the sort of person who is interested in that, this hopefully made sense as an explanation. If not, well, it's not possible to make posts like that anymore anyway.

I was gonna say you can go into the post's settings and make it unrebloggable but then I saw you said you deleted the og post.
But yeah I get it when a post escapes and you just want to stop seeing it..
I'm pretty sure I deleted that post before you could make things un-rebloggable.
Or it just wasn't able to be done because sometimes you can't do that to already posted posts, especially if they weren't made with tumblr's new posting method.
Or I decided I didn't want to restrict reblogging because it is educational even if I look like an idiot in the OP, thanks to my friend adding their knowledge on the subject.
Either way, this is my life now lol.
This is the first time it's popped up in a while and it's kinda funny to see it actually lol. A blog about avoiding racism in writing reblogged it (writingwithcolor) which is how I saw it on my main nonmonster blog's dash so that's actually kinda cool.
But still. I was so sick and out of my mind when I wrote it. 😭

Unfortunately OP made this fantastic post unrebloggable, but to "yes, and" it:
I think part of the problem with this attitude is the idea that "meaning and depth" must be something (solely) complex and dark and "adult." That "depth" means "I* had to think a lot about this" instead of, "one middle grade child may get one thing out of this, another child will get something different out of it; and they both will get something new out of it on rereads as teenagers, as adults, and again once once they have children of their own - that the story will grown and change and gather complexity with the reader.
*either the personal "I" or the public "I," the "I" of literary columns and public acclaim
And beyond that - this framing ignores the reader entirely. Art does not exist in a vacuum, and meaning is not inherent to a piece. A tree that falls in the wood with no one to hear will still create sound-waves, will have a physical effect on the world. But a book that is never read can never convey any meaning or have any value.
If adults are reading middle grade books and finding meaning and value in them, then they have meaning and value to adults. And the fact that children enjoy them as well, can understand them as well, does not diminish that value or meaning. The experiences of a child reading a book matter just as much as an adult when considering the worth of that book as "art." (Because of course, the other part of the problem with this attitude is that the people who hold it don't consider children real independent people, so if children find value in something, it must inherently be lesser.)
The books that were most impactful on me as a kid were the works of Tamora Pierce. Now, she's considered a titan of modern children's and YA literature, but she rarely ends up on lists of "great" or "meaningful" kid's lit, even in genre-friendly lists. And yet - when I was sworn in as an attorney, I didn't swear on a book. But I carried with me, in my bag, my old bent copy of "Squire." It is impossible to deny the meaning that book held and holds for me;* it doesn't matter how hard you try to decry that the book can hold no inherent value - because the only value that matters is the value they hold for their readers. (And children are readers too.)
*the answer to The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas, the answer of "fuck your dichotomy, I don't care what it costs, I don't care if I fail, I'm grabbing the kid and booking it."

I just learned about Eternal September but I cant reblog the post because op made it unrebloggable in the 1 hour between my mutual reblogging it and me seeing it on my dash just now, so here I am making my own post to say go look up Eternal September on Wikipedia.

Hey, I just read your Tumblr shoulds and shouldn'ts post. I've been here for a long time and I agree with you, but the weirdest thing happened to me a couple of months ago. I reblogged a post with a lot of reblogs, in the thousands, and I made a flippant comment about the vibes it gave. I didn't think about it as one usually doesn't in the tags. And then I got several asks, including one telling me to kms because my tags offended op, I understand how they could've been offensive, but they weren't a comment about op, they were for me a throw away comment about vibes, and if op had been like "hey that's fucked up" I would've been like "shit I'm sorry I didn't mean it like that" (I did say I didn't mean what they interpreted: a direct attack to op, but it's kinda hard to be apologetic when people come to your blog telling you to kys). I'm an adult and I'm ok, so idc if someone tells me that kind of stuff on the internet, but that isn't true for everyone. I'm not actually sure why I'm writing this, but I guess it's a warning for people to not just use tags as a free thoughts place because now that the tags are very out in the open it can cause unwanted conflict and obviously hurt people's feelings (I guess that's what happened with what I did and that's what caused the anger on my asks). And finally to remind everyone that all the blogs (that aren't bots) are ran by real people and as long as they aren't being actively harmful in actions or views there's a need for empathy or something like that. Anyway, sorry to rant on your inbox!
oh no worries i will trade your rant for one of my own. i feel like it’s a similar thing with how replies also show up in the person you clicked on the post through, or how you can make posts be unrebloggable or unrepliable— different users are taking a second longer to adapt to the new functions, and they way we talk to and about each other will also have to change. it’s a really interesting little case study in how language adapts to the medium and how that affects how we think about each other
