do YOU want to watch pacific rim: uprising? of course you don’t, instead watch the pure distilled essence of all the parts that actually mattered that i made in a stupor last night

The thing that Pacific Rim: Uprising just doesn't understand about Newt Geiszler, is that Newt is exactly the sort of guy who'd listen to whatever the Precursors are offering for five minutes or even just thirty seconds, then shake his head and say, "that's stupid; I'm out" and just walk away.
Yes, I know that the Precursors have ~weird mind control powers~ in PRU, but that's also part of the issue - the story is following the belief/narrative that people who fall into shitty politics or whatever are somehow being ~controlled~ and their ~true selves~ would never go along with it, as opposed to having specific vulnerabilities that make them susceptible to believing and going along with it willingly.
And the thing is, Newt doesn't have the right kind of vulnerabilities here.
The kind of guy PRU wants/needs is over at Silicon Valley.

Ok obviously we know what Hermann’s phantom drift symptoms were from drifting with Newt but I’m thinking about what Newt’s would’ve been if it weren’t for the whole evil mind control thing. Thinking about Newt who walks with a limp sometimes when he’s not paying attention. Thinking about Newt who pretentiously rolls his “r” once and immediately is horrified. Thinking about Newt who suddenly includes a lot more calculations in his work, who wears a puffy coat because he gets cold a lot more easily than he used to, who subconsciously reaches for a chain around his neck when he’s already wearing his glasses. What we could’ve had…

Anyway, continuing on with the Theme of the Day (I guess?), I'm watching Pacific Rim: Uprising.
Only about ten minutes in, but I'm? Really enjoying it?

thinking a Normal Amount about how profoundly alone and unseen Newt must have felt as he, under the influence of the Precursors, abandoned his loved ones and interests and ideals and mannerisms without even knowing why. and how from his perspective nobody gave the slightest fuck to even ask him if he was okay. and how Hermann seems so profoundly relieved to see him in Uprising, almost as if he had been trying to reach him this whole time. and about how the Precursors could filter Newt’s perceptions and make him lose time. and how it’s a classic abuser and cult move to convince one’s victim that the abuser/cult is the only one that cares about the victim. and about ten years of letters absently thrown unopened in the recycling bin, ten years of Choi kids growing up in an email inbox to which no human now knows the password, ten years of Geizsler family groupchat notifications papered over by a dissociation so intense it becomes a delusion. thinking a Normal Amount about this

i will forever be bitter that pacific rim 2 killed off mako mori just to further baby pentecost's pain. AFTER EVERYTHING IN THE OG PACIFIC RIM AND HOW FAR SHE'D COME AND FINALLY GOTTEN WHAT SHE WANTED? SHE DIES JUST TO GET BABY PENTECOST BACK IN THE GAME? a true disservice.

I hate Pacific Rim: Uprising so much but I would watch so many better Pacific Rim movies starring John Boyega. Look at him. He's just The Ranger Ever.

Wow. Someone actually brought up the film....
I read the book, barely remember anything about it, and that's enough for me.
