In the divine cycles universe, students in like 50 years are gonna be so sick of brnine like "wow, huh this person was part of the founding of this terrorist organization and was in fact the first leaders campaign manager. Oh, they also won the olympics and kidnapped the emperor. What's this, their work was instrumental in creating a force akin to magic, which is also named after them? They were part of the mission that destroyed all of the space nukes?? They killed the fucking president???" Like future history class is just gonna have a whole semester called the Captain Brnine Variety Hour

the thing that makes me out of my mind about gur sevraq. is that he was given a task by his god, who he ran a church for, to singlehandedly put together god’s body so god could destroy the planet. so they decided to become part of the revolution to maybe convince god not to do that. and because of that while gur was busy the authoritarian regime started to steal god’s body parts for their own gain. then while gur was beating themself up for this they got into a deadly argument and ended up as a ghost on an island and neither god they had ever worshipped would speak to them after years of being a prophet. now the only person he can communicate with is his hideous imperialist rival who he thinks he should probably kill but he’s understandably scared of losing his only remaining connection to the world, so he doesn’t, and he feels he’s a coward for that. they tell themself that their closest friend will handle the god’s body situation except very soon after said friend dies trying to get revenge for them. and on the same day said friend dies the public and presumably gur themself find out that gur’s actual body is being puppeted by the imperialists to spout propaganda that twists gur’s own recorded words and beliefs. five years later that puppet has become so famous as a mouthpiece of empire that they have entirely replaced “gur sevraq” and gur can no longer claim his own identity. and the rival who is their only connection to the living world has decided they’re not real and she doesn’t have to acknowledge them. it has lowkey been implied they’ve lost some of their faith in the previously mentioned god they were the prophet of. and they are millions of miles away from their home planet, which got taken over by the empire, and they have to wonder if they could have changed things if they’d been smarter and less prideful and less of a fool.
so anyway that’s the thing about gur sevraq i think about the most. how about you all, what’s your favorite gur thing

15 Days of FatT Day 15- Clocks/Time is Long
I have two jobs, Ibex. I have to make things better for people, and I have to make sure that people aren’t dead—I am Gur Sevraq, and I have stolen the future. Walk the prophet’s path with me, or suffer God’s attention.
The still images are under the read more in case the gif compression doesn't treat the gif nicely!

it is fucking crazy how much
Valence haunts the narrative in palisade. Like not using it lightly, Brnine's personality and beliefs and behaviors are heavily influenced by their guilt and grief at Valence's death, it's come up again and again with them, they've come up with Gur, they've come up obliquely with the branched and other aliens ... Like valence and their death are so omnipresent on palisade it's nuts, especially since it's not overstated or really made a huge deal of except in select moments (PSD 7 and 29 mostly were the big ones)

thinking about brnine and gucci’s partizan baggage is so fascinating. brnine’s call sign was markup bc they overcharged repairs on gucci’s secret rebel force. gucci sent brnine flowers in prison. brnine’s never spoken love died killing the mother of gucci’s childhood friend that she’s been orbiting her entire life. gucci naming the other factions of the cause in thematic relation to the blue channel. one really gets me… gucci was in fort icebreaker. she saw brnine and valence together; she knew brnine was their fervent campaign manager and valence got them that space ship. did she ever realize what was between them? did she know that the blue channel meant more than just a way to travel and brnine couldn’t have stood for it being renamed? there’s so much to read into here……..

Phrygian scientist math harvest is gonna make me go crazy i just. like f@tt is fundamentally... not a sciency show in some ways? in a way that i think is broadly good right. because one of the things f@tt is doing is like. challenging the myth of science/progress as a linear good thing. sometimes ""science"" is just a bunch of assholes coming into your home to suck up the natural resources.
obviously f@tt is not anti-intellectual by any means i mean. god have u listened to austin talk for any amount of time. but the point is you rarely see "science" that isn't being turned to make some kind of Horrible Gun right. A divine or a gun or an awful sword. Especially in the divine settings i think?
So the kinds of knowledge you see most sympathetically are like, the telluricists where it's a mix of survival skills and theory, or samot/samothes/primo/aubrey where it's like, craftwork.
so it's striking to see phrygian as like. traditional-as-far-as-branched-can-be researcher interested in math and the abstract and patience and analysis. "hey i need to do some tests to improve my spit" like as fully a process of self experimentation more than practice. (while also being a little weirdo room guy with awful fashion taste.) it feels novel & cool. "check out these branched math tricks" i was hollering!

can we talk about how gur sevraq is a character that can affect meta (ie, their name popping up as The Friend in ROT13, and in their first appearance, being the only narrator who is able to modify the opening theme of Road to Partizan), and how in the end they are completely subsumed by the narrative that they used to be able to affect... in death they don’t simply vanish, leaving their legacy, but instead become a supporting actor for other goals and ideologies.
Of course it fits in with Partizan’s theming around true death being a mercy not offered by the Principality, but it’s also just like... the real tragedy for a character like gur sevraq is being stripped of his metatextual agency and reduced to a person completely controlled by the narratives of those around him.

Spoils and the horrors below cut.
F@tT C/W, Twilight Mirage, PARTIZAN, PALISADE mentioned
One thing about Clementine is that she has always been a history nerd. She grew up with tales of princepts of old. She has a Favorite Battle in her Favorite War. Hilariously, she was given The Panther, a genuine artifacts of ancient history like a new jeep to fuck up on a weekend. You know, total nerd shit. The level of tactical genius she exercises is like the guy who knows a lot about something like The Battle of Agincort and expects you to believe they would known how to have done it like that or better.
So its funny to consider the fact that she as the Witch in Glass, can use perennial magic to bring back the dead, has ownership over the crown of glass and harnessed the power of the fUCKING iconoclasts is insane. But it's also concerning that this is lining up during a time when Stel Kesh itself has shown itself to be vulnerable to iconoclastic infiltration and is now one succession crisis away from total galactic instability. But most of all it's downright fucking terrifying that the tools to reunite the crown of glass (Palisade) with The Crown (Quire System) are both within the Twilight Mirage, WITHIN ARBIT.
Clementine is so dangerous. Or maybe, as Brnine would say, i dunno dw about it im sure it's fine.

[ID: screencap of the transcript of palisade 07. the text says: "Ali: Am I getting any vibes? Am I getting any deja vu situation? Austin: Oh... it's... okay. This is, I'm going to say this out loud, Ali: [laughing] Austin: And you're going to like, yell at me. Ali: Okay. Austin: But it smells like Valence here. Ali: Shut the fuck up. What are you talking about? Dre: Let's go!"]
Tumblr media
[ID: screencap of the transcript of palisade 07. text says: "Austin (as Lattice): You seem familiar with our form. Ali (as Brnine): Oh, yeah! I mean, yeah! I've, I've, you know. I'm, I'm well-traveled. Uh… Austin (as Lattice): I am… — Austin (as Lattice): Unique. How… how could you know someone like me? Ali (as Brnine): Me? Oh, I, uh… you know, you know, you know a guy. You, you work with people, and, uh… yeah. Yeah, I, uh, you know, old friends. Uh… Austin (as Lattice): You knew a Nobel? Ali (as Brnine): Uh, yes, yes, yeah. I can say that I do. Where, where have you been this whole time? Not that you, I mean, just, I, you know, you've been —"]
Tumblr media
[ID: screencap of the transcript of palisade 13. text reads: "Ali (as Brnine): Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Sorry, I—you know, I’ve been—I’m kinda in my own head about this too. Keith (as Phrygian): I saw. Ali (as Brnine): [nervous chuckle] I mean, you remember. Keith (as Phrygian): Remember the Affliction? Yeah. Ali (as Brnine): Right. Yeah, the—right. The—you remember the Affliction. Right. That’s—mhm. Uh-huh. Keith: Clueless. Ali: Uh-huh. [chuckles] Austin: Yeah. Uh-huh. [laughs] Good. Good, good, good. Dre: What else is there to remember?"]
Tumblr media
[ID: screencap of the transcript of palisade 14. text reads: "Austin: Yes. One was Brnine. You saw something while you were there, right? Keith: Right. Ali: Mhm. Austin: Do you want to expound on what that—what the vibes were? Ali: Um, I had a weird vision where I walked into a monster that was actually a theater. And I met someone who kind of reminded me of a dead friend of mine, so I’m sort of spiraling. But I don’t know that that’s why I’m going back to Violet Cove. Austin: Oh, that wasn’t even what I was talking about. Ali: Oh. [laughs]"]
brief "brnine is not over it" compilation courtesy of the transcripts, excited for this to expand
bonus from the partizan post mortem:
Tumblr media
[ID: screencap from the partizan post mortem transcript. text reads: "ALI: It’s just like- Broun was like, the thing with Broun for a lot of the season was like, how significant is their buy-in? How, you know, genuine are they? Is there going to be a person to reach out to them and sort of pull them in? AUSTIN: Mhm. ALI: And that person was Valence, and then we got Broun like, the most like, Broun was on the tip of being like yeah. I’m in it. I’m good now! [chuckles] I have a positive influence in my life. And then, bop! See ya! [laughs] AUSTIN: Gone. ALI: Just like the idea of playing Broun like post-losing Valence is the like. Broun and Valence weren’t in a relationship, but it doesn’t matter for the rest of Broun’s life."]
