finally finished nona so i can unmute everything, and i gotta say im a bit conflicted on the book. I thoroughly enjoyed it of course, but I feel a bit underwhelmed. The first two thirds were very good, pretty slow paced, but steadily ramping with reveals about BoE and the Nine Houses with a building dread, and then the final third hit and 500 things happened at once. The weird part was none of the big reveals felt significant, it wasn’t until the epilogue that the ending even really sank in. Everything kept giving me the same feeling as the Ianthe Lyctorhood reveal in GtN, basically “this is a big thing, but really is a distraction for THE big thing”, the big thing being Cytherea. This isn’t a bad thing to have, it can make the big thing feel way more important, but I never felt like we got The big thing in Nona. Cam and Pal fusing, finding Gideon’s body and talking to her, Nona talking with Varun/Judith, Ianthe at the Tomb, John maybe being on the Ninth, Anastasia just chilling in skeleton form in the tomb (which means she did lock herself in like Jod told her to), even Nona/Alecto waking up, everything felt just a little bit less significant than it should have. 

I will probably appreciate it more when I have a chance to digest and reread it, but on the first read I am a bit unsure. Probably a 7.5-8/10 compared to GtN and HtN both being 10/10s atm

Tbh? I don't like Paul. I don't want Paul. I understand that Paul serves an important narrative function and that Paul is the best possible ending for Camilla and Palamedes given their situation, personalities, and relationship. However what I really want is for Camilla and Palamedes to attend the ATN wedding as two individual humans and for Pal to be a lightweight who loses his tie in the garden fountain after three drinks and for Camilla to do exactly one shot with the group, keep Gideon from ripping the sleeves off her dress shirt, and absolutely kill it at lawn games during cocktail hour. Since this scenario is a wild tonal mismatch for the series and also Palamedes was already dead, this was unlikely to ever happen. However Paul is the final nail in the coffin for the theoretical existence of this scene and I can't help but resent them for that

#I don't think we as readers are supposed to welcome Paul. at least not without grieving Pal and Cam #Paul's existence is both a horror and a triumph #however my concerns are much more petty and involve Camilla winning at cornhole #I can't yet properly characterize Paul. would Paul lose their tie in the fountain??? would Paul win at cornhole?? #or does everything that made Pal and Cam individually delightful cancel out into a person who is mostly competent and boring. #they balanced each other out you see!!! so what happens now that they're combined into one person!!!! #the locked tomb #nonasbirthday #nona the ninth spoilers #the locked tomb spoilers

Continuing to unhelpfully parallel read:

Palamedes took her knife, and he cracked open an invisible seam on the end of the handle.  A think trickle of something white and grey and powdery dribbled into his palm.  He held it out to her, and Camilla opened her mouth, and -- to Nona’s horror -- ate it, whatever it was.  He took the knife and scored her finger saying, “Not much longer,” and he pressed her own bloody finger to her cool and bloody mouth, and he said, “Don’t look back.  Whatever you do, don’t look back,” and they huddled their heads together, they rested their heads on each other’s shoulders.

Paul.  They’re  not a perfect lyctor, or a regular lyctor, or a partial lyctor.  They’re a reverse lyctor.  Cam ate Pal.  Palamedes’ plan wasn’t to do a regular lyctorhood, where he consumed Camilla.  He forced her to consume him, so that they could be together.

I’m in tears again over Sex Pal.
