what a mess. these numbers all plague me constantly, why do no numbers ever line up. some of the green lines should be red lines because i constantly doubt my reasoning, some of the red lines should be green lines because i miss obvious things, but here's where i have landed. im so psyched to update this with whatever we learn in AtN. i want to take every editor/copyeditor/proofreader who worked on these books out for a drink so we can argue about these details. HUGE THANKS @nonasbirthday for coming up with this graphic and then making a blank template!

Summary:

Gideon is a firefighter paramedic who has recently appeared in a sexy calendar for charity. Harrow is a surgeon who has recently come into possession of a copy of said sexy calendar. This brings up all kinds of feelings for Harrow about her history with Griddle, but Harrow is convinced she can shove these feelings in a box and never open it again - until she is unexpectedly assigned to work on a project with Gideon. The two of them in a room together have always been explosive - they'll need to overcome old grievances and learn to trust each other if they want to keep it all from going up in flames. This would be a lot easier if Harrow could see anything other than Gideon's photo shoot every time she closes her eyes.

anyway harrow the ninth makes me so emotional because in media we've seen the "person dies to save the one they love" trope 1,000x over and muir is aware of this—it's what every previous lyctor's cavalier did, minus ianthe—but it usually just sort of ends there, with the understanding that it was tragic but a heroic and noble and romantic sacrifice, and it can't be undone. you just have to accept it and move on. but harrow said NO. i refuse to accept that. i can't accept it, i will not resign myself to this. i will undo my entire brain and rewrite my reality for the slightest chance to stop this from happening. it's not heroic and noble to her. she never wanted gideon's sacrifice, she just wanted gideon. and i think that's a really good look at the way sacrifice plays itself out in relationships and how complex it is

Tbh? I don't like Paul. I don't want Paul. I understand that Paul serves an important narrative function and that Paul is the best possible ending for Camilla and Palamedes given their situation, personalities, and relationship. However what I really want is for Camilla and Palamedes to attend the ATN wedding as two individual humans and for Pal to be a lightweight who loses his tie in the garden fountain after three drinks and for Camilla to do exactly one shot with the group, keep Gideon from ripping the sleeves off her dress shirt, and absolutely kill it at lawn games during cocktail hour. Since this scenario is a wild tonal mismatch for the series and also Palamedes was already dead, this was unlikely to ever happen. However Paul is the final nail in the coffin for the theoretical existence of this scene and I can't help but resent them for that

#I don't think we as readers are supposed to welcome Paul. at least not without grieving Pal and Cam #Paul's existence is both a horror and a triumph #however my concerns are much more petty and involve Camilla winning at cornhole #I can't yet properly characterize Paul. would Paul lose their tie in the fountain??? would Paul win at cornhole?? #or does everything that made Pal and Cam individually delightful cancel out into a person who is mostly competent and boring. #they balanced each other out you see!!! so what happens now that they're combined into one person!!!! #the locked tomb #nonasbirthday #nona the ninth spoilers #the locked tomb spoilers
