July 19, 2023
By Naaman Zhou
(The New Yorker) — Last winter, on a cold pitch in London, Liverpool’s women’s team played Chelsea, which was on a seventeen-game unbeaten streak and has lately been one of the dominant teams in English women’s soccer. It was the fourth round of the F.A. Cup, a knockout competition known for the occasional surprise. Liverpool scored twice—but Chelsea had Samantha Kerr. In the thirty-second minute, the twenty-nine-year-old striker received a pass from her teammate Niamh Charles, mid-run, raised a foot near the height of her shoulder, and pummelled the ball left to right into the top corner of the goal. Shortly after halftime, she scored again, off a quick pass, after stepping into a blind spot behind a Liverpool defender. Later, the ball came her way in the air. She jumped, the neck muscles turned, the ball fell in. When the game ended, the score was Liverpool 2, Kerr 3. “It was almost a given, wasn’t it?” a commentator murmured, before it was through.
Afterward, Kerr hugged her teammates and exchanged the customary back pats. Game-changing goals are routine for her—they seem to define the entire season for others. Like all of soccer’s great strikers, Kerr has a full menu of ways to score; commentators like to call it a knack, or an eye for goal. But, with Kerr, it’s all about motion. “Next time you watch her play, see who makes the first movements,” Emma Hayes, her coach at Chelsea, once said. “It’s always Sam.” Carli Lloyd, a two-time World Cup winner with the U.S. team, told me, “She’s a sniper in front of the goal. She will hover, and she will find a way.” Between 2017 and 2022, Kerr was the top scorer in every league she played in, across the highest tiers of Australia, the United States, and England—sometimes simultaneously. It has been nearly four years since she last played a game in the National Women’s Soccer League, in the U.S., but she is still the league’s all-time top scorer, with more goals than Alex Morgan or Megan Rapinoe.
Kerr is also the captain and star player of the national team of Australia, which, along with New Zealand, is hosting the Women’s World Cup. Australia has never advanced further than the quarterfinals. The reigning champion and world No. 1 is the United States. Spain has the best player in the world, the midfielder Alexia Putellas. England won the Euros, and Canada won the gold medal in the Olympics, where Australia finished fourth. Still, in the past few months, the Australian team, known as the Matildas, has beaten or matched several of the world’s best squads. Its second-best player, the defender Ellie Carpenter, is back from a nearly yearlong injury. And there will be a home-field advantage. “I think there’s tremendous pressure,” Lloyd, who will cover this year’s tournament as an analyst for Fox Sports, told me. “If they don’t go far in this World Cup, it’s going to be deemed as a failure.”

Ausenal
Arsenal Women x Teen!Reader
Summary: You join the other Aussies at Arsenal
Tumblr media
"Yeah, all you really need to worry about is if the big girls will let you play with them," Kyra teased from the seat next to you, pinching at your cheek," They might not and then you'll be left on the bench!"
"Kyra!" Steph snapped from the driving seat," Leave her alone!"
"I'm just joking!" Kyra laughed.
You didn't really find it funny. You were a ball of anxious energy as Steph drove you and the rest of 'Ausenal' to training. You and Kyra had, technically, signed for Arsenal on the same day but you had remained stuck in Australia after because you had to sort out some stuff about school so Kyra had already met everybody before you did.
"It's not funny," Steph said," She's scared."
"I'm not scared!" You denied it even though you were definitely scared and, had you not been sitting down, you would definitely be shaking in your shoes.
"You don't have to be scared," Caitlin said, finally looking up from her phone," Everyone's cool. If anything, they'll just complain about another Aussie joining them. We're taking over."
"And by complain," Steph said sternly," She means tease. No one's going to complain about you, munchkin."
"Munchkin!" Kyra giggled, pinching at your cheek as you tried to pull away.
The nickname had stuck ever since your call up to the national team when they went through a bout of injuries that meant that the scrawny nearly-sixteen year old had been deemed one of the next best alternatives and you had never been able to escape since.
Playing with, as Kyra called them, 'the big girls' had been your dream for years but now that you'd made it, you couldn't quite believe it and your shyness had come out in full force.
"Alright," Steph said as you all piled out," Boots?"
"Yeah."
"Socks?"
"Uh-huh."
"Schoolwork?"
"Yep."
"Good." She adjusted your coat and smoothed down the flyaway strands of your hair that were sticking up. "Okay. We're training until lunch and then we've got a two-hour break before the gym session. Do you know what you're doing during that?"
"My schoolwork."
"And, do you-"
"Come on, Steph," Caitlin said, slinging her arm over your shoulder," We've been through this like ten times. Yes, she'll do her homework. Yes, she'll make sure to socialise. Can we go now?"
Steph sighed. "Go on."
Caitlin began to steer you away.
"And make sure she fills up her bottle before training starts!"
The locker room was just as loud as your old locker room back at Perth Glory and it settled you a little bit as you ended up getting changed next to Caitlin, staring straight ahead at your cubby.
The other girls took their time so you were left just sitting on the bench and clicking the heels of your boots together as you waited. You didn't really know your way around so you just had to wait until one of the older girls finished getting ready and took you to the pitch.
"Hey. You're that Australian kid, right? God, I thought Kyra had a baby face."
You looked up and then immediately looked back down.
Jen Beattie was standing in front of you.
"Hi." Your own voice was barely a whisper, hardly even audible over all the noise in changing room.
She leaned a bit closer to you to fully hear and you went rigid. You didn't particularly like new people in your personal space without warning. Hell, it had taken nearly a month for Kyra to be allowed close enough to hug you, let alone pinch your cheek like she did earlier.
"You're not as loud as Kyra, are you?" She asked and it was clear that she was teasing but it still made you feel nervous.
You shook your head.
"She's an angel," Caitlin said," But then again, everybody's an angel when compared to Kyra."
"I'm not that bad!"
"Yeah, sure." Caitlin's arm swung over your shoulders, giving you a little squeeze. "But this munchkin is still an angel."
You kind of wanted the ground to swallow you up. Your cheeks felt hot as the mention of your nickname and you looked bashfully.
"Munchkin?" Jen laughed," I like it."
Caitlin laughed too before steering you out of the locker room onto the pitch. You were thankful that the drills were fairly rudimentary today but still hard enough that everyone was exhausted enough to not talk.
You glanced around as you drained your bottle, skirting out of the way quickly when Kyra approached with her still full bottle, already angling it to squirt towards you.
Usually, you had Mini to protect you when something like this happened but now you had to fend for yourself, darting around the outskirts of the group so Kyra couldn't change you.
You zipped past Lia Wälti and Leah Williamson, sliding past them as Kyra tackled you to the ground. She kept you pinned to the ground with her own weight as she unscrewed the top of the bottle.
You squeezed your eyes shut in preparation but no water came.
"Leah!" Kyra complained," Get off! It was just a joke!"
"It's her first day," Williamson lectured," Don't traumatise her so early. We want to keep her for years."
"Are you okay?" Lia helped you up, patting down your shirt to get the grass scraps off it.
"I'm okay." Just like in the locker room, your voice was barely above a whisper but she didn't seem to mind, just smiling at you.
"Good. I'm glad. Kyra usually isn't that mean, sorry."
"She's not mean." You felt compelled to defend Kyra. "She's just a bit silly sometimes. She doesn't mean harm."
"It's nice that you two are such good friends," Lia said. Somehow, she managed to squish you between her and Leah as you all headed in from training for lunch.
"Mini...er...I mean Katrina, she says that Kyra's got annoying little sister energy."
"Annoying little sister energy!" Leah laughed," Oh, that's gold! I like that!" She swung her arm over your shoulders. "I like you, kiddo."
A piece of nervousness lodged in your chest came loose and disappeared as Leah talked. She didn't seem to need your input much and you were more than happy with that.
Before you knew it, you were sat at a table next to Steph with a full plate and soft conversation washing over you. You still felt nervous around the other girls but you felt more settled than when you first arrived today, most of your antsy energy replaced with good old-fashioned shyness.
"You need to get started on that Chemistry lesson," Steph reminded you as she set you up with your laptop and some snacks," And tonight, you need to remember to call Mini to tell her about your first day."
You nodded, plugging in your headphones and clicking start on the video that was set up for you. You got a decent way through your worksheet before it started numbing your brain and you rolled up the foil of your snack into a little ball and rolled it across the table to Kyra.
She frowned at first before grinning, flicking it back at you. You ducked and grabbed it off the floor to return it. Kyra caught the next shot and you threw it back with enough force that, when you headed it back, it landed in her protein shake.
You both burst out laughing, attracting stares that had you instantly quieting and looking back down at your keyboard.
"Are you being a bad influence again, Kyra?" Kim asked.
"I'm not a bad influence!" Kyra said, picking the ball of foil out of her drink and throwing it back at you.
It was still covered in protein shake so you shrieked and dived off your chair to avoid it.
"She's meant to be studying," Kim continued as you picked yourself up off the floor.
"Give her a break," Caitlin said," Surely all that schoolwork can't be good for your brain."
"That's not how it works," Kim replied.
"Let the kid have a break," Katie inserted herself into the conversation easily and you kind of envied that a little bit," She's been studying for nearly an hour now. I, for one, am pretty sure that Steph said something about making sure she socialised too."
Kim looked like she was mentally groaning but she finally relented. "Fine," She said," But you're explaining all this to Steph."
"Please," Caitlin scoffed as she beckoned you over to sit with her and Katie," She'll be delighted that this munchkin is making friends."
You face was stained red. "You can't keep calling me that," You said to her," It's embarrassing."
"Sorry," Caitlin said, not looking very sorry at all," But with Alanna and Mackenzie not here, one of us has to keep up with embarrassing you."
"Leave her alone," Steph said as she came back into the room, your saving grace.
"She's right," Katie said," We certainly can't call her munchkin, that's her Aussie nickname." She grinned teasingly. "How does pipsqueak sound?"

i think i might love you
summary ― sam and y/n were friends, best friends.
pairing ― sam kerr x reader
warning/s ― fluff
masterlist
Tumblr media
You had known Sam since childhood. Your houses were just across the street from each other. You were inseparable, whether it was playing soccer in the backyard, helping each other with homework (you helping Sam), or sharing your deepest thoughts on Sam’s balcony on moonlit nights. To the world, you both were simply best friends, but beneath the surface, there was an unspoken affection that you both cherished in the private corners of your hearts.
Morning would break with you sending Sam a ‘Good Morning Sunshine!’ text, and Sam would ping back instantly, always awake before you (waiting patiently for your text), a ‘Morning, Butterfly <3’ would follow. Most mornings the pair of you would meet for a morning jog, soccer becoming a big part of both your lives. Both of you are set to join the national team (If all goes well). You loved the morning jogs with Sam, as did Sam. Each of you secretly relished the nearly innocent physical contact during stretching exercises. Although you both had your affections on the tip of your tongues, neither was none the smarter about the other’s feelings.
An understanding that you were just friends.
The morning jogs only kept the sanctuary for so long, school taking you away from your secret moments. In public, there was a careful distance you both meticulously maintained. Neither wanted to fuel the neighbourhood gossip who were always waiting for a sliver of juicy news. At school, you would part ways. Classes break you both apart, waiting for the rings of the bell to indicate recess and lunch.
Soccer dominated your recess and lunch, the pair of you playing with the boys (beating them time and time again). The celebratory hugs were purely platonic and if it took one of the boys yelling at the two of you to hurry up - well that didn’t mean anything.
The offer came in 2009. Both your lives drastically changing. No longer were you the two girls from East Fremantle playing against the boys at school but you were placed on a national (and international) playing field. Playing with professionals over twice your age.
Sam cheered you on as you made your debut against Italy, and you cheered her on a week later as she ran onto that field. Although the scoreboard wasn’t what you were hoping for, that didn’t seem to matter when the two of you landed back in Perth - both your families waiting with signs of celebration for the two of you.
Roxanne and your mum shared a knowing glance, as you and Sam reluctantly let go of each other's hand to say hello to your families. The day followed into the night, both families over at Sam’s place. The barbeque going on, and music playing in the background as the kids played against the adults in a (not so) friendly game of soccer.
Nobody blinked an eye when you ran up to Sam after she scored a goal, her arms wrapping around your body as she lifted you up in the air and spun you around - the world around the pair of you disappearing.
Back to school, the two of you still separate in classes, although strategic planning created perfectly timed bathroom breaks throughout classes. Those few extra minutes taking you over to recess and lunch.
The reality was, you were both completely and utterly smitten. It was more than a crush, deeper than simple words could express.
The Women’s League came and went, with Perth Glory coming 6th overall. Both you and Sam scored goals for your team. And although it wasn’t the first place you were hoping for - you got something better.
The two of you had been placed as bunkmates during the travel, sharing hotel after hotel (not that either of you were complaining). In the sanctity of privacy, between the wins and losses, you both had poured your hearts out to each other, discussing dreams, fears and aspirations while lying side by side on the hotel rooftop decks, lost under the blanket of stars. This was your special meeting place, where secrets were traded, emotions uncovered, and feelings assured.
It had been a special evening, you had scored the winning goal against Adelaide United, the high from that flowing through the night. Sam had managed to sneak in your favourite soft drink, both of you passing the bottle between the two of you. You had been watching Sam’s lips move as she spoke, her hands going all over the place with excitement. It took a few moments to realise she had stopped speaking, your eyes moving away from her lips to see the glint in her eyes.
“Caught you staring Y/L” A smirk covers her lips, as you shake your head. Moving your attention towards the starry night once more. She lifted herself up, her body leaning over so her face was directly facing yours.
“What?” titling your head, as your eyebrows frown a little. She sends a smile, before bringing herself back next to you on her back. “Nothin”
You hesitate for a moment, debating internally if you should finally confess your feelings. You feel warmth in your hand and realise that Sam has clasped her hand into yours.
It was enough.
“Sam, promise you won’t get weirded out?”
Sam gave you a small squeeze, enough reassurance for what you were about to say next.
“I think” you pause, taking a deep breath before continuing “I think I’m in love with you, Sam”
The silence was loud, her grip tightening around yours. A thousand thoughts raced through both of your minds, her heart beating with relief. This was her moment. She had been talking with her mum about this for months. Maybe her mum was right when told her to just ask you out.
“I think I’m in love with you too”
The kiss was fast, a quick peck as you both pulled away, blush covering both your cheeks as shy smiles appeared.
Christmas and New Year came and went, the pair of you sharing your midnight kiss with each other before Sam’s sister walked in on the two of you - screaming “I knew it!” over and over again as she ran off to both your families.
You two shared a look before bursting out into giggles.
That didn't take long.

wait now i'm curious what club do you support?
i support perth glory, which is my local team (i live in australia)! we're much more known for our women's team than our men's team and we've had great players like sam kerr, kate gill, mackenzie arnold, caitlin foord that have played in our club. last year i began watching the NWSL (the american women's soccer league) and i started supporting north carolina courage (kerolin is one of my favourite players).
most of the t5 european leagues i watch as a neutral but there are teams that i do enjoy watching over others (even if i wouldn't call myself like a fan?). like i've been watching spurs because of ange postecoglou (i'm against patriotism unless in sports ofc) and bayer leverkusen for xabi obviously. i like watching barca fem as well because they do probably have the best squad in woso right now.
