Both Jingjai and Pheng are much more alike than they think. They were both ignored and unloved by their parents and learned unhealthy patterns to get attention and affection from the people around them, whether it's by hurting herself to be seen or by seeking out romantic and sexual connections with people to feel wanted.

No, seriously, al these teenagers just hurt so much. They were rejected by their families, they were pushed away and ignored and unloved and disliked and judged constantly and it's painful to see them try to be their best selves when they don't even know how to start.

So many of them are doing their best but they're so unsure and on shaky ground because the adults in their lives have always, always betrayed them and now has sent them here to this abusive place that will teach them lessons and mold them into a very specific type of person and all it asks of them is that they accept that being hurt and abused is just part of their lives.

I’m completely normal about this scene. Totally. Except I’m not really.

Pheng spent her whole life thinking that the only way she could have affection was through pretending she was in pain. That’s the only time her mom would pay any attention to her. She tried that even with the friends that had shown her kindness.

She learned the hard way that it’s impossible to lie your way through everything, but the wound is still there, hurting.

And then there’s Pennhung who has never been truly loved by his father, who has been so harmed and ostracized, but remained kind and honest.

Honesty is the main point of this exchange. Pheng is learning to be honest with herself and others while Pennhung has never been able to be anything but.

He’s so honest that he doesn’t tell her “Pennhung and other friends wouldn’t let you get hurt” or that they’d save her. Pennhung knows he can’t promise her that.

What he can give her is the simple truth: they may not be able to protect Pheng every time, but they’ll stand with her, they won’t let her “freeze to death alone”.

And it’s beautiful how you can see that realization sinking in for Pheng, even amidst all the chaos that surrounds them.
