~OPINION~
Pierce Transit has been talking with local government boards and community groups about changing Pacific Avenue. To their credit, the planners are asking for citizen input.
Here’s One Opinion About Changing Pacific Avenue
by Shenah Wildwoman (aka Tami Jackson)
When most people think of increasing mass transit, they have a knee-jerk response like more mass transit is always better. They think positively like someone just sprayed them in the face with the most seductive of rose oil perfumes. They visualize the relieving of traffic congestion and minimizing of air pollution. Even stubborn citizens who refuse to give up the privilege of driving their own vehicles can find something positive to say about raising taxes to increase mass transit. Some think: “Awesome! There will be more roadway left open for me to drive upon!”
For the most part, public transportation is regarded as a necessary investment for the economic well-being of Tacoma’s downtown region. Just as a High Capacity Transit (HCT) system would provide rapid access to the city’s amenities, like museums, restaurants and clubs, it would also provide a much safer way to get home after someone visited too many bars late at night.   That last part is only the tip of the volcano which brings me pause. In fact, there are many very dark attributes that arise with any new mass transit system. Those bleak shadows are more troublesome than the extra noise the bigger transit vehicles will make.
Mass Transit Experience Different For Men Versus Women
From personal experience, commuting by mass transit in Seattle has not always been a pleasant experience. Express busses often become overcrowded and that creates a huge disparity in how pleasant the ride becomes for female passengers versus for males. Thanks to weird socialized behavior, when a passenger gets on an express bus, if there are only two vacant seats left available and one is next to a man while the other is next to a woman, it doesn’t matter if that new passenger is male or female. That passenger will almost always sit next to the woman.
What that means is, men often get to ride mass transit in a seat all to themselves but that luxury is seldom afforded a woman. Because women are much more likely to share the seat with another passenger, they are exponentially more likely than men to get stuck sitting next to someone who might not have bathed or even be sane. Sometimes that other passenger is homeless and got on mass transit just to escape the cold outside (King County gives homeless people more fare assistance than Pierce County). In other cases, the person in the next seat might have been be sexually aroused. While dressed in my winter coat with hat and mittens, I’ve been hit on by both genders on the bus and sometimes that solicitation was so aggressive it felt quite disconcerting if not alarming.
Physical Discomforts of Taking Mass Transit
Waiting at transport stations can expose would-be passengers to excessive cold and wet, depending on the bus shelter’s setup. Most bus stops leave riders exposed to heavy winds, not to mention garbage that animals pull from the nearby trash cans or filth that other people leave behind.
A grave mistake Seattle made when planning its mass transit system, was to forget that passengers are real people instead of just walking cash-dispensing machines. The metro tunnel loading docks and elaborate park-and-rides fail to provide any public bathrooms. I’m not sure where the planners expected travelers to relieve themselves but I have personally observed more than a handful of passengers who got off one express bus to just squat on the pavement or face some corner of a building before transferring onto a light rail train. The wise citizen must ask: Which would have been cheaper? For Seattle to install bathrooms and pay attendants to keep those places safe? Or to keep paying clean-up crews who must drive around with big trucks and power-hoses to remove human waste from the sidewalks (hopefully before another passenger stepped in it).
Under Seattle’s system, mass transit keeps on losing passengers because some people feel more than a little put-out and humiliated when they have no place to “go.” It’s also a crying shame that Seattle failed to provide handicap bathroom facilities for travelers with special needs.
King County’s Financial Mistakes Should Alarm Pierce County
Looking at the vast sums that King County will keep on collecting from two future decades worth of taxes, just to expand its current transportation system, should make the citizens of Tacoma and Spanaway ask: “Is that really something we really want for Pierce County?”   Too often, along with the installment of a bigger mass transit system, there is an increase in crime and Tacoma is already 45 officers short of having a full police force. So before we all jump onto the “pro-mass transit” hay wagon, maybe as citizens of Tacoma we can pause and explore other possibilities wisely. With modern technology, for example, we have the potential to build a city with much quieter systems like electric-powered driverless cars. Or perhaps instead, Pierce County will install helicopter landing pads, or build something that looks like Snoqualmie’s chairlifts that get people from point A to point B. Who knows what our future transportation solutions will be. To relieve traffic on our roads, we just need to think bigger and smarter than the norm (which Seattle keeps proving is not so great). If we put our heads together, we can find a much less expensive solution to growth and transportation that improves our air quality, enhances the local economy and makes it better for everyone in the city - not just for improving downtown.
