Arnon Grunberg ontvangt Johannes Vermeer Prijs 2022
Tumblr media
“I’d like to end up as a tree”
Marwan kenzari (31) won a gold calf last year for his role in the movie Wolf. As of next week he is to be seen in Bloedlink (/reckless), opening’s act of the Dutch film festival. “It’s not my place to say I’m good.”
Bloedlink
“Acting offers the chance to become well acquainted with the complexities of being human. The Moroccan kick-boxer Majid in the movie Wolf had a fascinating interior life. His character was even easier to understand when he said nothing at all - I don’t think I’ve ever had as little lines in a movie. Rico in Bloedlink is completely different. He accidentally finds himself swept up in criminal business, but he’s actually just someone who’s had a whole slew of bad luck. In the movie his character undergoes a few very surprising U-turns. In my portrayal of him, I interpret all those different sides as honest, I find that interesting. In the movie, Rico does some paradoxical things, but he means all of them. Of course that’s simply not possible. That’s what makes him fascinating and tragic.”
Journey
“If I’m a good actor? That’s not my place to say. Sometimes you do the most interesting things you think are worthless in the moment. A movie is a collaborative journey, which, in the case of Wolf, I underwent with director Jim Taihuttu among others. Although I secretly did think during shooting: this will be fun. Wolf is an honest movie. The kick-boxing, the hits to the body, very little of that is pretend. Not that everything should be real in a movie, but this story required that. At a certain point I felt: this could be something really fresh in Dutch cinema. And it was.”
Peanut Butter
“Ever since that role, which I trained for quite extensively, I’ve found it increasingly important to stay in shape. It wasn’t a complete transformation; even beforehand I would exercise six times a week. But now I’m slightly addicted, yeah. It makes you mentally stronger, too. If I’ve been training on a Sunday at 7 am and then at 8 am I’m outside again, showered, refreshed and in shape while the rest of the city’s asleep, I’m 1-0 ahead. Scratch that: 10-0. I pay attention to my nutrition as well. Bread for example gives false energy. But I’m not always so strict. I get plenty of enjoyment from a good, white slice of bread with calvé peanut butter. And then fold it over, don’t cut it! You shouldn’t cut a sandwich, everyone knows that. Then you miss the first bite.”
Toneelgroep Amsterdam
“After the acting academy in Maastricht I was immediately invited to Toneelgroep Amsterdam. I was with them for three years, but found my attentions pulled towards film during that period. When the actors from TGA are - rightfully - expected to be fully available. We “broke up”, though that sounds too serious, with full, mutual agreement. I see the company as family and will be playing in Angels in America at the end of the month, in New York. Director Ivo van Hove has been very important for my development. I admire his knowing exactly what he wants, but also his ability to be unsure and searching, and to be able to be vulnerable about that. But I have to be fair to myself. I’m 31 now, and these are my most important years in film. While I hope to be an even better stage-actor when I’m fifty. I’m slightly further ahead in film than on stage. That development is tougher, needs more time and possibly total dedication. Stage is the motor in the actor’s car; film is a different muscle. But if Ivo calls me in two, or ten or forty years, he’ll be the first stage director I’ll say yes to.”
Pierre Bokma
“As the son of Tunisian parents in the Hague painters-quarter I didn’t come into automatic contact with theatre. As a kid I was mostly interested in football, the emotion you see on a player’s face when he scores - fantastic. At a certain point I realised that movies can affect you the same way, even though you know it’s fake. That’s the magic of acting. Through contacts I ended up with De Nieuwe Amsterdam, an in-between theatre course for teens for whom the leap to theatre school was perhaps a bit too big. I learned everything there: playwrights, Dutch actors, repertoire. You’re also taught which acting schools exist. And I thought: where did Pierre Bokma go to school? And Fedja van Huêt? That was Maastricht. It also appealed to me that they implemented Bijltjesdag: you might still be sent away halfway through the first year. I decided: if I’m going for this uncertain profession, maybe the best trial by fire will be going to a school where you aren’t sure if you’ll be allowed to stay. I was allowed, in the end. At the theatre academy I came into contact with art, philosophy, poetry. All of that was new. But it didn’t feel as if I was behind, I only saw it as a fantastic source of riches; as if I could try on all sorts of new glasses.”
Huntersfamily
“I never thought that this path wasn’t laid out for me, I just always let myself be lead by my passion and my dreams. My parents are happy for me; I have a good connection with both. My father is an amazing person - an accumulation of beautiful ingredients. He’s honest with himself, doesn’t spare himself and laughs a lot, that’s important to me. He might be made out of simple components, he’s from a huntersfamily, but for me these are the components that build a strong character. My dad can tell beautiful stories, about his life in Tunisia, about his old friends who aren’t with us anymore. Every year death takes someone new, and in that way a beautiful group of people slowly disappears, the protagonists of a generation. One lives close to the elements there, I find that fascinating. It’s so different to our life here. I’ll also never interrupt my dad when he starts on a story like that. Even if I’ve heard it before.”
Vampire
“I’ve always said: I want to play a woman, a vampire, a Moroccan kick-boxer. I’ve succeeded in doing the last one. A vampire is a wonderful character. The beauty of their faces, the sensuality, the tragedy of never going outside during the day, and of course their never ageing; never dying, in fact. I’d like to never die. When I was a kid, I suffered a lot of nightmares. About falling and never landing. I had a hard time in the dream world, I wasn’t a big fan of night. It was, I think, a sort of inexplicable fear of dying. At a certain moment I grew familiar with those dreams, figured out how to influence them. I could for all intents and purposes check-out whenever it became scary. I became the director of my own dream world. When I was twelve, I fell in love, and then I was over it. I still have nightmares, like everyone else, but now I find them fascinating instead of threatening. Beautiful how your mind can make a story out of all sorts of ingredients. Sometimes I call my mother to talk about what a dream might mean. For example, I recently dreamt about my grandmother. ‘She thinks about you and loves you,’ my mother says.”
Tree
“I still know fear and uncertainty, but they don’t hinder me anymore. They’re two trusted companions now, who walk with me. They keep me sharp and hungry, and in a good way, they keep me on my toes. As long as they don’t hold me back, they can be here. Fear of dying is now simply fear of no longer living. If a way to live until you’re 377 is discovered tomorrow, I’ll be the first to sign up. I’d like to end up as a tree. Then you only need to have a care for wind, rain and sun.”

Books of the year 2020
2020 was a hell of year for many - heartbreaking, full of worry and anxious distraction. For others it gave a bit of mental space, time away from the stress of normal routine, a chance to reflect. My year was more like the former, although I’m pleased to have finally been able to release the digital Boy in the Book, and I’ve had some brilliant full on time with my daughter.
That’s all a way of saying there hasn’t been much time or head room for reading this year, my pile of ‘to be read’ is bigger than ever - mostly of more newly published books. I realise this is a somewhat eclectic list, but it reflects where my current interests lie.
Same as previous books of the year posts date of publication is not relevant for this list. So, these are the best books to find me in 2020.
#1 - Killing and Dying – Adrian Tomine (2015)
Tumblr media
As far a away as possible from superheroes we are living in the golden age of graphic novels and comics. This book contains six of the best short stories you’ll read anywhere. Adrian has completely captured the contemporary – a combination of loss and longing, the constant yearning for purpose and the need to be needed.
#2 - Wise Guy – Mike Caveney (1993)
Tumblr media
Harry Anderson. If you don’t know who that is - go and lose yourself for a couple of hours on YouTube and then pop back here. Aimed squarely at magicians, the book chronicles Harry’s rise from street performing, the creation of Harry the Hat, to his legendary Saturday Night Live performances. If you perform magic the how-to’s are great, but it’s the inspiration behind the tricks that struck a chord.
#3 - Tales from the loop & things from the flood – Simon Stålenhag
Tumblr media
This is kind of a cheat, as yes, these are two separate books and The Electric State was in my Top 5 last year – but hey, it’s my list. Tales from the Loop was adapted into an Amazon series, but film somehow fails to capture the scale, the uneasy world building, the tension between a familiar past and one which is purely imaginary. The text fragments bristle with humour, melancholy, nostalgia, and emotion, which alongside the stunning illustrations make a whole great than its elements.
#4 – The Books of Wonder – Tommy Wonder and Stephen Minch (1996)
Tumblr media
This two volume set is up there among the best books on magic ever written. Tommy Wonder was a master at his art, and went to extraordinary lengths to achieve the perfect effect in the eyes and minds of his audiences. His legacy is not only in incredible magic pieces and his thorough analysis of deception psychology, but in the lesson to continue thinking about your work. Everything can always be improved, and if it can't, you're not thinking hard enough.
#5 – The Crap Hound Big Book of Unhappiness – Sean Tejaratchi (2019)
Tumblr media
The seminal zine Crap Hound has finally realised a long held goal, two decades in fact, and it’s a staggering achievement. Think 12,500 images staggering. For those of you who don’t know – Crap Hound is dedicated to reproducing line illustrations from vintage magazines and ephemera. Taken collectively the book “documents pop-culture’s never ending quest to nurture and exploit our collective anxieties” – and I can’t think of a better time than now for the need to confront the propaganda we face on a daily basis.
A couple of 'almost made the top 5' entries - The Dairy Restaurant by Ben Katchor (2020), The Darkest Corners by Ben Hart and Neil Kelso(2020), and Memoirs of a Book Thief by Alessandro Tota and Pierre Van Hove (2019).
And finally, the best/most read kids book of 2020:
Story Path by Madalena Matoso (2016)
Tumblr media
As it’s a kind of Choose Your Own Adventure book we’ve had this in our house since my daughter was born. But now she’s four, it’s come into its own. The format is a smart idea – each page offers you a choice of location, or character, along its illustrated paths. It’s up to the child and grown-up to elaborate and improvise a story - as you can imagine it’s often absurd, silly, and adventurous – which means repeated, repeated reading.

Cultural memory: the doorknob to our history?
21st February 2020
If you take a walk around the city you live in, do you think about all its history? Do you look at a church and wonder about all the things it has seen? Do you ever wonder about those who have walked the same path before you? Today, this blogpost will introduce you to some of the hidden cultural history of beautiful Groningen. Even if you are a Stadjer, we might even teach you something new about your city!
Tumblr media
If you have ever been to this small city in the northern part of the Netherlands, then you will know of the Martinitower at its centre. Did you know, however, that the iconic green bronze layers at the top of the tower were only added after a huge fire burnt down the original wooden layers?[1] Did you know the surrounding buildings to the south-east of the Martinitower were demolished after World War II? Well we’ve got news for you, they did… and not for the reasons you may think. The Nazi-German troopers stationed in Groningen during the War did unimaginable, despicable things in those buildings. For those reasons, after the war, the citizens of Groningen wished for these events to be forgotten and erased from memory.
Tumblr media
When you walk from the Grote Markt and through the Vismarkt, you will see the ‘Der Aa kerk’. Apart from its beauty, it also holds a rich history. During the War, many Jewish citizens of Groningen were sheltered in the attic of the church.[2] This was done to prevent them being deported and put into concentration camps by the Nazis. Because of this, many survived the war. However, from the 3,000 Jewish citizens living in Groningen before the War, only 180 survived.
Tumblr media
You may be wondering why you are being given all this information, but hang in there, everything is relevant to what we want to discuss in the remainder of the blogpost. Finally, we need to discuss one last case of (not so) hidden history in the city centre of Groningen. This time it brings us to the busy, colourful and beautiful street of the Folkingestraat. This street used to be the centre of the Jewish district of Groningen, but after the War, there was not much left of the Jewish community that once occupied it. Therefore, it lost its identity as the Jewish sector of Groningen and began to be occupied by the general public.[3]
Tumblr media
To ensure that the history of the street would not be lost, in 1997 the municipality decided that expressive representations of the former Jewish community should be placed there in their honour. This would be what Dołowy-Rybińska would call ‘Constructing a symbolic landscape’.[4]
Throughout the street, now placed are small hints to its past; moons that go from crescent to waning, portraying the rise and downfall of the community. The door without a doorknob, symbolically representing the history of the Jewish community, a history permanently closed and locked away in memory.[5]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keeping the topic of cultural memory of the Folkingestraat in mind, the remainder of this blogpost will discuss the academic papers by Pierre Nora “Between Memory and History: Les Lieux de Mémoire” and “The Europe of Minorities: Cultural Landscapes and Ethnic Boundaries” by Nicole Dołowy-Rybińska, in relation to the case study that has been presented to you.
Rybinska claims that “the visual presence of minority languages and cultures in a specific territory create sharper ethnic boundaries,”[6] although, that is not the case in Folkingestraat. The symbolic references to the Jews who lived here in the past are very subtle and honestly unnoticeable to any unknowing members of the public who walk down the street, they might only remark at the strange sight of a portrait of a horse’s rear end on a wall (see above). In an otherwise Dutch city, “the [Jewish] minority takes possession of the territory by marking it in a visible way through its language and signs,”[7] the Jewish community of the past is marking its territory, so despite the fact the Jewish community no longer live there, their memory and spirit dwell.
According to Nora, memory is “nothing more [...] than sifted and sorted historical traces;”[8] so how do we decide what to remember? By immortalising the Jewish diaspora in Groningen with these displays, those with the funds have decided that that aspect of Groningen culture was worth remembering. When the Jews were being evacuated during the German occupation, surely they did not believe that there should be any traces of them living here, the collective memory is shifted. This begs the question whether collective memory is dictated by those in power, or perhaps those with wealth and social standing? Naturally these things change over time and therefore subtle symbolic reminders of a community may be more effective than concrete representations, as these are less likely to offend those who do not understand or notice them.
Tumblr media
To wrap everything up, the Folkingestraat is an example of honouring and remembering the past, and the Jewish minority previously present in the area. The memory of the Jewish community is celebrated on the street, with public images and artworks. It can also be a means for the Jewish population of Groningen to ‘re-establish or to re-construct from scratch their cultural identity in the territories they inhabited’.[9]
It is clear we choose to commemorate the aspects of our cultural heritage we wish to commemorate. In Groningen we remember the Jewish community who lived in the Folkingestraat and their experiences during WWII. However, we choose to erase the memories of the German occupation. Of course, the Nazi regime should not be celebrated or commemorated, and it is understandable that the population of Groningen after the war wanted all traces of the occupation to be wiped from memory, but would there be benefits to keeping the buildings? Would it not serve the purpose of education? Reminding people of what happened and to ensure history does not repeat itself?
So, here is some food for thought: Do you think all aspects of cultural heritage, good or bad, should be remembered? Is cultural heritage only meant to include the important, morally acceptable things? Or are there some part of our heritage best left in a history book?
Until the next time! ~ Katie, Cato and Emma

English Premier League -- Arsenal VS Liverpool
Livescore | Match Prediction & Tips| Asian Handicap Odds|Line-ups& H2H Stats
-----------------------------------
Champions Liverpool continue their quest for more Premier League history when they take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night.  Jurgen Klopp's side suffered a setback in their pursuit of top-flight immortality at the weekend, while the Gunners will be looking to bounce back from their North London derby defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Match preview
Whatever happens in the final fortnight of the 2019-20 Premier League season, Liverpool's exploits will go down in history - they shattered numerous records and wrapped up the title two games faster than any other team has ever managed in the English top flight before.   However, while the supporters would undoubtedly be content with 'only' ending their 30-year wait to be crowned champions of England, a tame end to the campaign would threaten to take some of the gloss off their remarkable achievements.  It was not long ago - at least in terms of games played - that Liverpool were being touted as possible Invincibles and treble-winners and looked certain to break Manchester City's 100-point record, having picked up 26 wins and one draw from their opening 27 games.  They have since won four, drawn two and lost two of their last eight top-flight outings, in addition to being knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup - by no means enough to ruin their campaign, but certainly a drop-off in their previously unheard-of form.  Saturday's 1-1 draw at home to Burnley means that Klopp's side must now win all three of their remaining games - against Arsenal, Chelsea and Newcastle United - to break the points record, or take seven points from the nine available to equal it.
The champions are more than capable of doing exactly that, of course, but those three teams will be feeling a lot more optimistic about taking points off the Reds now than they were before lockdown.  The Burnley draw brought an end to Liverpool's incredible winning run at Anfield as they dropped points at home in the league for the first time since January 2019, and their recent away form has actually been poor.   Last week's 3-1 triumph at Brighton & Hove Albion ended a five-match winless and goalless streak on their travels across all competitions, during which time they conceded 10 goals without reply.  Of course, these recent struggles also need to be kept in perspective; Liverpool have still amassed 10 points more than any other team away from home this season, and victory on Wednesday would see them break all-time club records for both most away wins and most wins overall in a single campaign.  Klopp's side are now battling against those legends of the past for their place in the historical rankings of England's greatest ever teams, rather than any contemporary rivals this season, and while the manager has claimed that he is not interested in that, there would be a small sense of a missed opportunity if they fail to capitalise fully on such an incredible start.
More than one Arsenal side is in that same conversation of English football's best ever teams, but the current crop are a million miles away and the scale of the job facing Mikel Arteta was once again laid out for all to see during Sunday's derby with Spurs.  There were positives for the Gunners as they dominated the game for long spells, but they gifted Spurs both goals and it remains impossible to rely on such a shaky defence.  Arsenal have now thrown away a whopping 21 points from winning positions this season - a tally which, if added to their current points total, would leave them third in the table, only a point behind Manchester City and with Champions League football for next term already secured.  As it is, the derby defeat saw them slip to ninth, level on points with Burnley and with the possibility of a top-four finish now beyond them.  Instead, Arsenal's eyes must now be on qualifying for the Europa League again, although that could also prove problematic with seventh-placed Sheffield United four points ahead with only nine left to play for.
The derby defeat should not cast complete doom and gloom over the club, though, as they had been making noticeable progress under Arteta before that, winning four and drawing one of their previous five games.  The Gunners can also boast an unbeaten home record in the Premier League this calendar year - a run which includes five wins and two draws, most recently being held by Champions League-chasing Leicester City.  Wednesday's match will be Arsenal's penultimate of the season at the Emirates, with Aston Villa away to come before hosting Watford on the final day - two games which look kind on paper but will come against teams fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table.  It has been a difficult run for Arsenal recently too, with four successive league games against teams currently above them in the Premier League table and an FA Cup semi-final against Manchester City to come at the weekend.  The FA Cup may be Arsenal's priority now given the damaging nature of the derby defeat on their league position, but Arteta has already shown during his time in charge that he will not accept a drop-off in any competition regardless of its importance between now and the end of the campaign.

Team News
Arsenal will once again be without suspended striker Eddie Nketiah for this match as he serves the second of his two-game ban following his red card against Leicester.  Alexandre Lacazette made a statement in his absence with a thunderous opener in the derby, and he is likely to lead the line again with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in support.  The match features a number of Golden Boot hopefuls, with Aubameyang, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane all looking to retain the award, having shared it in a three-way tie last season.  Mesut Ozil remains a major doubt for the home side as he continues to struggle with a back injury, while Matteo Guendouzi is out of contention following a bust-up with Arteta.  Gabriel Martinelli, Bernd Leno, Pablo Mari and Calum Chambers are all expected to miss the remainder of the season for Arsenal, who have been hit badly by injuries since the restart.  Liverpool will also be without two key players for the remainder of the campaign - captain Jordan Henderson missing out with a knee injury and Joel Matip sidelined due to a toe problem.  Klopp is being cautious with the fitness of James Milner too, and the veteran midfielder is again expected to be absent for this one after missing out against Burnley entirely.  Trent Alexander-Arnold and Naby Keita are among the players who will be pushing for a recall to the starting XI, while Klopp must again decide whether to rotate one of his front three.  All of them boast impressive records against the Gunners, with Salah scoring six goals in six meetings, Mane notching four times in seven games since joining Liverpool and Roberto Firmino scoring eight times in nine appearances - his best record against any opponent.
Arsenal possible starting lineup: Martinez; Sokratis, Luiz, Holding; Bellerin, Ceballos, Xhaka, Tierney; Saka, Lacazette, Aubameyang
Liverpool possible starting lineup: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Keita, Fabinho, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Salah, Firmino, Mane
Head To Head
Arsenal have a torrid record in this fixture recently, failing to win any of the last 10 meetings across all competitions and nine in the Premier League stretching back to April 2015.  They are often entertaining affairs too, with the most recent showdown ending 5-5 in the EFL Cup in October - Liverpool winning on penalties - and the last nine meetings producing 49 goals at an average of more than 5.4 per game.  The reverse fixture in the Premier League saw Liverpool run out 3-1 winners in August, with Salah grabbing a brace.
Arsenal VS Liverpool
Prediction:Arsenal 2-3 Liverpool

2019 Tony Awards Trivia
This is the stat that I’ve seen get the most attention, and it’s a really cool one: Jeremy Pope, who’s nominated in Leading Actor in a Play for Choir Boy and Featured Actor in a Musical for Ain’t Too Proud, is the sixth actor in Tonys history to be nominated in two different categories in the same year. Pope is only the second to be nominated for both a play and a musical in the same year, the first actor of color to achieve this distinction, as well as the first member of the LGBTQ+ community. The others are: Amanda Plummer (Leading Actress in a Play nominee for A Taste of Honey and Featured Actress in a Play winner for Agnes of God in 1982), Dana Ivey (Featured Actress in a Musical nominee for Sunday in the Park with George and Featured Actress in a Play nominee for Heartbreak House in 1984), Kate Burton (Leading Actress in a Play nominee for Hedda Gabler and Featured Actress in a Play nominee for The Elephant Man in 2002), Jan Maxwell (Leading Actress in a Play nominee for The Royal Family and Featured Actress in a Play nominee for Lend Me a Tenor in 2010), and Mark Rylance (Leading Actor in a Play nominee for Richard III and Featured Actor in a Play winner for Twelfth Night in 2014).
A few notable firsts: Ali Stroker (Oklahoma!) is the first actor who uses a wheelchair to be nominated for a Tony. Paddy Considine (The Ferryman) is the first actor with autism to be nominated for a Tony.
Heidi Schreck (What the Constitution Means to Me) is the third person in Tonys history to be nominated for Best Play and Best Actress for the same show in the same year. She joins Anna Deavere Smith (Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992) and Claudia Shear (Dirty Blonde).
Oklahoma! is one of the landmark American musicals and, as of yesterday’s nominations, has received a total of seventeen competitive nominations and a special award in 1993. The only competitive award the show has ever won is for Featured Actor in a Musical in 2002 for Shuler Hensley.
Director Rachel Chavkin only has two Broadway credits to her name, but both shows led the nomination count in their respective Tonys ceremonies: Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 received twelve (eventually winning two), while Hadestown scored fourteen nominations.
Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown) is the 41st woman nominated in the Best Score category. If she won, she would be the seventh woman to win (joining Betty Comden, Lynn Ahrens, Lisa Lambert, Cyndi Lauper, Jeanine Tesori, and Lisa Kron), and she would be only the second woman to win the award as a solo composer, following Lauper in 2013.
Dominique Morisseau (Ain’t Too Proud) is the first black woman nominated for Best Book since Lita Gaithers in 1999, who was nominated for It Ain’t Nothin’ But the Blues.
If either Kiss Me, Kate or All My Sons wins their respective Best Revival category, they would join The King and I, La Cage aux Folles, Death of a Salesman, and A View from the Bridge as the only shows to win Best Revival twice.
Some of the roles nominated this year have previously been nominated for or won Oscars. These roles include Scout Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird), Michael Dorsey (Tootsie), and Sandy Lester (Tootsie), while the roles Howard Beale (Network), Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird), and Julie Nichols (Tootsie) have all won Oscars.
A few actors are back with a returning Tony nomination after a lengthy gap: Annette Bening (All My Sons) received her second nomination, her first coming in 1987 for Coastal Disturbances; Fionnula Flanagan (The Ferryman) also received her second nomination, with her first coming from further back in 1974 for Ulysses in Nighttown. Mary Testa and André De Shields both received their third nominations (she for Oklahoma!, he for Hadestown), the first for each of them since their last nomination in 2001 (she for 42nd Street, he for The Full Monty).
Some roles that received nominations this year that have previously been nominated or won: Chris Keller in All My Sons (Benjamin Walker in 2019, Jamey Sheridan in 1987), Larry in Burn This (Brandon Uranowitz in 2019, Lou Liberatore in 1988), Lilli Vanessi in Kiss Me, Kate (Kelli O’Hara in 2019, Marin Mazzie in 2000), Curly in Oklahoma! (Damon Daunno in 2019, Patrick Wilson in 2002), and Aunt Eller in Oklahoma! (Andrea Martin in 2002, Mary Testa in 2019).
Ain’t Too Proud is the first jukebox bio-musical nominated for Best Musical since Beautiful in 2014, and the sixth ever nominated, joining The Boy from Oz (2004), Jersey Boys (2006), Fela! (2010), Million Dollar Quartet (2010), and Beautiful (2014).
With his double nominations for Tootsie and Beetlejuice, William Ivey Long remains the most nominated costume designer in Tonys history, with 17 total. This is also his second year with two nominations, having also been nominated for both La Cage aux Folles and A Streetcar Named Desire in 2005.
This is the first time ever that there are six nominees in the Best Score category. To Kill a Mockingbird is the eighth non-musical play to be nominated in this category, joining Much Ado About Nothing (1973), The Song of Jacob Zulu (1993), Twelfth Night (1999), ENRON (2010), Fences (2010), Peter and the Starcatcher (2012), One Man, Two Guvnors (2012), and Angels in America (2018). This is the first time a non-musical play has been nominated in this category in consecutive years.
Kelli O’Hara received her seventh Tony nomination for Kiss Me, Kate, her sixth in the Leading Actress in a Musical category, tying her with Sutton Foster and Bernadette Peters. Chita Rivera still reigns supreme in that category, with eight nominations.
The Prom is the 14th musical to get multiple Leading Actress nominations. The others: New Girl in Town (1958), Company (1971), Follies (1972), Chicago (1976), Annie (1977), Dreamgirls (1982), The Rink (1984), Black and Blue (1989), Guys and Dolls (1992), Side Show (1998), Urinetown (2002), Wicked (2004), and War Paint (2017).
If Tootsie wins Best Musical, David Yazbek will be the fourth person to work as composer on back-to-back Best Musical winners, joining Richard Adler and Jerry Ross (The Pajama Game and Damn Yankees) and Cy Coleman (City of Angels and The Will Rogers Follies).
With both Ain’t Too Proud and Hadestown, This is the fifth time that two shows received at least two nominations in Featured Actor in a Musical. The others are Fiorello! and The Sound of Music (1960), The Producers and The Full Monty (2001), Hairspray and Movin’ Out (2003), and Something Rotten! and An American in Paris (2015).
Scott Ellis (Tootsie) has broken his tie with James Lapine to become the director with most nominations for Direction of a Musical without a win.
With his nomination for Kiss Me, Kate, orchestrator Larry Hochman is a nine-time Tony nominee and is now second behind Jonathan Tunick as the most nominated orchestrator of all-time.
Peter Nigrini is the first person in Tonys history nominated for both Scenic Design of a Musical and Lighting Design of a Musical in the same year. He’s nominated for Ain’t Too Proud’s set with Robert Brill and for Beetlejuice’s lights with Kenneth Posner.
Some stats on how many times the ten nominated directors have been nominated before: this is the tenth directing nomination for Gary’s George C. Wolfe (previously won for Angels in America: Millennium Approaches in 1993 and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk in 1996, and previously nominated for Jelly’s Last Jam in 1992, Angels in America: Perestroika in 1994, Caroline, or Change in 2004, The Normal Heart with Joel Grey in 2011, Lucky Guy in 2013, Shuffle Along in 2016, and The Iceman Cometh in 2018); this is the ninth directing nomination for Tootsie’s Scott Ellis (previously nominated for She Loves Me in 1994, Steel Pier in 1997, 1776 in 1998, Twelve Angry Men in 2005, Curtains in 2007, The Mystery of Edwin Drood in 2013, You Can’t Take It With You in 2015, and She Loves Me in 2016) and To Kill a Mockingbird’s Bartlett Sher (previously won for South Pacific in 2008, and previously nominated for The Light in the Piazza in 2005, Awake and Sing! in 2006, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone in 2009, Golden Boy in 2013, The King and I in 2015, Oslo in 2017, and My Fair Lady in 2018); this is the fifth directing nomination for Ain’t Too Proud’s Des McAnuff (previously won for Big River in 1985 and The Who’s Tommy in 1993, and previously nominated for How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in 1995 and Jersey Boys in 2006) and The Prom’s Casey Nicholaw (previously won with Trey Parker for The Book of Mormon in 2011, and previously nominated for The Drowsy Chaperone in 2006, Something Rotten! in 2015, and Mean Girls in 2018); this is the second directing nomination for Hadestown’s Rachel Chavkin (previously nominated for Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 in 2017), Ink’s Rupert Goold (previously nominated for King Charles III in 2016), The Ferryman’s Sam Mendes (previously nominated with Rob Marshall for Cabaret in 1998), and Network’s Ivo van Hove (previously won for A View from the Bridge in 2016); this is the first directing nomination for Daniel Fish (Oklahoma!).
